Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says he avoids negative recruiting

Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin said he instructs his staff to avoid “negative recruiting.”

“If I ever catch them even saying something close to it, I stop them and move them on just because I don’t think when you’re at Tennessee with this offense, this defense, this staff and these facilities, there’s no need to use negative recruiting,” Kiffin told the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

Kiffin denied ESPN’s report that he told wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey that he would “end up pumping gas like all the other players from (South Carolina) who had gone to South Carolina” after Jeffrey decided to sign with the Gamecocks over Tennessee and Southern Cal. Jeffrey’s high school coach was also in the room when the comment was made, according to ESPN.

Also on Thursday, Tennessee recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron told the Knoxville paper he was with Kiffin during his conversation with Jeffrey. “I was in the room. I never heard anything as such. I’ve worked with Lane for years. Never heard him say anything like that. It came as a complete surprise.”

Out of all the Lane Kiffin’s antics, THIS IS THE FUNNIEST. He doesn’t do “negative recruiting.” LOLOL. He was caught on National TV falsely accusing the Florida coach of cheating in recruiting. That wasn’t NEGATIVE toward Florida’s recruiting???? Florida is the national champion. He made the entire SEC look bad, college football look bad. It’s a shame Lane Kiffin can’t call Urban Meyer and convince him like he did with Jeffrey that he never said that. Kiffin can’t do that because it was CAUGHT ON TAPE. Kiffin avoids negative recruiting? Lane Kiffin is the poster child for negative recruiting.

Coach O is such a credible source, too. He’s ripping off his shirt like a WWE wrestler, jumping around with Tennessee players and recruits, yelling “Wild Boys.” I want him as my character witness. And I’m not even going to go into all the stuff Coach O did at Ole Miss …

I feel much better now. With his ‘offense/defense/etc. there is no need to do negative recruiting’. However, if he ever feels the offense/defense.etc. needs it, all bets are off. I am afraid little Kiffy just isn’t bright enough to know what negative recruiting is. If he ever catches one of his coaches coming close to negative recruiting he stops them. Hey Kif, how bout a rule right up there with ear piercing and lip metal that says ya can’t do it? Kiffy and Orgeron are not Mutt and Jeff, they are Lie and Swear To It. Sorry Ed but the high school kid has not earned my mistrust, Kiffy has. Kiffy isn’t just a loose cannon, he is a lying loose cannon.

Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton needs to be held accountable for hiring this clown. Lane Kiffin has made our university the laughing stock of college football in three months. THREE MONTHS. Lane, you can’t claim you avoid negative recruiting when you wrongly accused Florida of cheating in recruiting. Everyone saw it on national TV. That was negative recruiting at levels NEVER seen before. When ESPN does an “Outside The Lines” special on Negative Recruiting, that will be the opening soundbite.

Lane, what bothers me the most about that is that you gave some half-hearted “press release” apology about Florida, but never had the courage to call Urban personally. This is going to haunt you until you do. That’s your first step to recovery, if that is possible (unlikely). Apologize to Urban like a man. Tennessee fans, this is completely embarrassing to our university. I hate hearing about it from co-workers every day. Hate hearing it on the radio every day. It just never ends. Ultimately, I don’t blame Lane. Lane is just being Lane. I blame the man who hired Lane.

And, we don’t need to defend Mark Richt or promote him. He does that all by himself, just like Kiffen does nothing but continue to prove what an a** he is.

We don’t need to promote Mark Richt, defend him, or anything else. He does just fine promoting the program at UGA, which you can see each year in the recruiting. Same with Kiffen—no one needs to try to give him a fair shake; he’s made enough of an a** out of himself everytime he opens his mouth to prove he doesn’t deserve anything but the comments he’s getting.

This is hilarious! Does Kiffin really think people are so stupid that they take him at his word? What a moron! UcheaT is on a downhill spiral and if the AD or school pres. doesn’t stop the bleeding, they’ll be a sunken ship in less than three years!

Kiffin is not going to get a fair shake, he has set the tone. He runs his mouth, and lies about everything else, why should any one believe him about this one LITTLE thing. I think Kiffin, there is the truth and there is Kiffin’s truth, he has shades of grey, he just sees things the way he wants to see them so that they are justified and therefore that makes them true, or justified. It is all a means to an ends, for HIM, so that makes it all o.k., he is a ME person, because he was “born on third base and thought he hit a triple”

Kind of like the politician quote, how do you know when they’r lying? How do you know when Lane’s lying? His lips are moving. That being said, his dad is a great coach and Orgeron is a great recruiter. If they just keep their yap’s shut and coach and not do all the crazy stuff, they’ll be fine. I say this as a UGA fan first, SEC fan second. A stronger conference is better for everyone. Just coach and shut up. Otherwise, you’ll implode. Philip Fulmer may have dropped the ball the last few years but at least the guy had some class and represented UT well.

This is getting weirder and weirder. Just as most political scandals are all about the attempts to deny and cover up the original sin, so too is this brash young man who thinks he knows everything there is to know about everything. What needs to happen is for his daddy to turn him over his knee and do what he should have done a couple of decades ago - by the way, would that be a firing offense?

The interesting part is that he now says that because he has such great athletes, coaches, facilities and fans he doesn’t need to do ‘negative’ recruiting. Does that mean that if he felt he didn’t have those things he would engage in that nasty negativity? Frankly, that says all you need to know about his basic character…he cheats only when he has to.

UGA’s own top-shelf recruit - Orson Charles - has come out and said that this would be very out-of-character for the Lane Kiffin he knows. He added that Kiffin was very gracious when Charles told him he was going to UGA and wished him well.

Why would he act one way with Charles and another way with Jeffrey? It seems he’d be consistent, if anything. I understand that, in the context of everything else that has gone on during Kiffin’s brief tenure, this looks really bad. However, something just doesn’t quite add up here.

Regardless of the truth, however, this is really getting way overblown. Even Jeffrey’s coach, by his own admission, wasn’t offended (if we assume this DID happen) and has moved on. Everyone else EXCEPT the key figures in this “drama” are really the ones making this into such a big deal. Typical.

I think it’s ironic that the coach and the kid both say over and over to move on and it’s not worth talking about just keep repeating the story over and over. There seems to be a two-faced attitude coming from the classless coach and his player. It seems they are in no hurry to move on by retelling the story every time a camera or reporter stands in front of them. Kiffin’s record with recruits is perfect. Only this one media ho coach claims something negative while every other recruit Kiffin has dealt with says the opposite. I’m more inclined to side with 99.9% of those having GOOD things to say about Lane rather than a guy proving himself to not have any credibility by lying about the insignificance of this but doing the exact opposite.

Clearly all you other SEC teams feel intimidated by little ol’ Lane. If he truly was no big deal you’d be finding something else to write about. But you’re either man-crushing or truly scared senseless by the guy. You’re making every effort to bash him and play up these stories because you already see him making an impact. Even recruits are taking note by now considering UT over the mediocre UGA especially. How’s that national title coming over there in Athens? What happened to that preseason #1 last year? Looks like Richt just cannot produce the big Sears trophy. And with Urab Crier over there making faster results, Richt is fading into oblivion.

One of the most overlooked parts of this whole deal is that the HS coach got a hotel room for himself and two of his students, both minors, to get some of the stress off his player. Now, at this time, the player’s mind is made up for little USC and the deal is final. Why then, the need to go to a hotel? Wouldn’t you just turn off the cell phone? Instead, the coach and the players are up at 3 a.m., by their own admission, still talking to Pete Carroll and Lane Kiffin. Did they just call them at 3 a.m. to tell them the player wasn’t going to big USC or UT? Of course not. There is a lot more to this than was published. It wasn’t about protecting a player, who shouldn’t have needed it given how his mind was allegedly made up. Plus, as hot as this story is, why did it take a month to surface? Lane Kiffin stories are published every single day in the AJC. Everybody’s taking a shot at him, but this one takes a month? Neither Marlon Brown or Orson Charles had bad things to say about how Kiffin responded to them going to other schools. Brown even agreed that it was grandma who pushed him to UGa. Plus, with all Kiffin’s said and done, he took the time to refute this specific story after it was published. This story doesn’t pass the smell test.

And by the way, unless his name is Hershel, he ain’t runnin’ on the Gators. 2) That great stadium they have?? Yeah it’s big, but our Pep rallies are louder down here than that place. 3) As far as what Orson Charles said about KIffin being gracious and professional?? Ask the people down in Pahokee, Fl about how gracious and professional Kiffen is. 4) Is Wyoming on their schedule again this year?? ‘Cause I only had them down for 6 losses.

ugablows, I did do the research. Perhaps you should heed your own advise and do YOUR research. I know he visited Knoxville back in February, but he did so without his parents. Maybe he was with his “handler”, who knows? Most UT fans with knowledge of the situation (that leaves you out) were expecting him to visit this weekend which would be an indication that he had strong interest in the Vols since his announcement is set for Monday. No one has confirmed he and his family are coming to Knoxville this weekend. Pro or con, maybe the reports of the “UT Wild Boyz…UT Wild Boyz” escapade helped him make up his mind.

He may eventually sign with the Vols, but from the other “research” I’ve done, it doesn’t seem to look too good. Guess we’ll know Monday.

As far as you saying I’m “hating” Kiffin too much, it’s just the opposite. I’m getting a kick out of him. I’ll bet the comedians who frequent the Knoxville comedy clubs are delirious with all the material he’s given them.

The Tennessee girls on this blog are really upset. What a hoot!

Lame Kiffin keeps screwing up and the Vol girley men bloggers can’t say enough bad things about UGA, UF etc. instead of owning up that their new coach is a major mistake.

His lifetime head coaching record was 5-15 before he was called a LIAR and fired by Al Davis. Quite a catch for UT.

Oh well, after UT gets it’s arse kicked 7 or 8 times next year and ends with losses to Vandy and Kentucky, UT fans will all just be sitting there with those same blank dumb expressions.

I heard one of the reasons Grandma didn’t want her grandson to go to UT is because Ed Orgeron showed up at her house for the recruiting visit with alcohol on his breath.

He always was an idiot and a loser. Had a restraining order placed against him in the 1990’s, and also a charge for headbutting a restaurant worker.

A molder of young men’s character. UTwildboyz!!!

And Lame hacking off an entire town (not to mention the high school and the coaching staff) is priceless. No negative recruiting there.

I hear Lame is installing a stripper pole in the UT football facilities for his assistant coaches to use when the new recruits come up.

Maybe they could move down to the 50 yard line and perform during halftime and Ed can do his Chris Farley SNL imitation for the toothless crowd.

The great thing about being a Vol fan and going to Neyland Stadium is that you don’t have to change out of your orange prison uniform to fit in.

I personally hope Lane has an 8 year contract like that loser up in South Bend and it is too expensive to buy out.

BECAUSE HIS BIGGEST FAN BASES ARE GOING TO BE ON THE CAMPUSES OF THE 11 OTHER SEC SCHOOLS IN THE CONFERENCE.

    UTwildboyz!! UTwildboyz!! LOLOLOLOLOL :)

You poor guys who hate on Kiffin only stand on half facts. Lemme set you straight on things you’ve missed.

Yes, Kiffin’s record at Oakland was 5-15, BUT he wasn’t allowed to choose staff or players. You really think he wanted brain-dead Jamarcus Russell as his first pick when they needed so many other things. Plus, he wasn’t even allowed to bring in Monte. Who wouldn’t want Monte Kiffin as DC, except Al Davis?

UT is actively recruiting Pahokee kids and not being threatened in any way. Even though their coach is an unabashed Gator fan, he is not pushing All his kids to UF. He’s doing what’s right for the kids.

Orgeron didn’t show up with alcohol on his breath at Grandma Browns. One of the top two recruiters in the country doesn’t do something that stupid. It makes a nice coverup though.

We’re not losing to Ky or Vandy this year. Heck, even with Fulmer getting fired this year, we didn’t lose to either. We’re like 31-1 with them in the last 16 years. Now which allegedly big-time coach was it that lost to both of those teams in the same year?

There’s no NCAA investigation looming. Even stealing recruits out from under CUM hasn’t been enough to warrant that. Is Uga under investigation for getting both Murray and Charles out from under CUM also?

Also, not that you’ll believe it but the guys who run UT’s biggest website, Volquest, are saying Bryce Brown IS in Knoxville. Doesn’t mean he’s actually there, but they are saying it. Doesn’t mean he’s gonna sign with them, but he does announce on Monday. Oh, but that’ll get UT on probation, right?

Oh yeah, don’t forget that Kiffin’s on PTI at 5:30 p.m. As if the AJC, our Atlanta PR branch, hadn’t already told you.

Brew, I don’t agree with everything you said, but I do have to give Kiffin credit for NOT wanting Russell. What a wasted #1. I believe ANYONE who coaches under Al Davis will eventually have a black mark by their name.

I have a friend in the Knoxville area and he said talk radio is filled with rumors, but it doesn’t seem as though Brown in there. The big thing I kept hearing was that this time he’d have his parents with him. As you said, who knows what’s the truth?

As far as UT goes, I think you’ll be okay, if not better, next year. I do believe Kiffin and staff are getting off to a rocky start, but the talent on the team didn’t just suddenly disappear.

While the Dawgs are the team I follow, I do believe the biggest story in the SEC this fall with be watching UTs progress.

I hope Kiffin does sign Bryce Brown, that one will follow with an NCAA investigation. The NCAA has already opened an investigation into Bryce’s “Mentor”, you see he has this little charity that he likes boosters to contribute too… hmmm wonder where that money goes. There is a reason Bryce opened up his recruiting again, he said he want’s a school who will take care of him for LIFE, are we starting to see a theme here? Kiffin telling Jefferies he will pump gas,.. is UT offering more than Scholarships? Anyway, Miami was wise to pull that scholly, I hope UT does land him!! I am not sure what they did at USC but you can wind up in deep caca in the SEC for that stuff, just ask BAMA, Phil and UT boosters set Bama up good. Now look at Phil’s karma.

It’s also been reported this afternoon…well, my brother heard it from a co-worker, who heard it from his cousin’s friend at the Kroger on Cumberland Ave in Knoxville…that after this afternoon’s practice the Tinasee coaches are gonna take the players to Smokey’s owner’s house and watch Smokey copalate…uh…repraduce..uh…mess with female bloodhounds. The head coach says it’s for morale and to git his team fired up. This same girl says it’s gonna be on EXPN this evening. And she said that the coaches have already been tole to deny it and say it aint so and it would be out of carackter and all. Imo wach tv this eavnin and see.

Hey JW you KNOW that if thug “U” is pulling a scholarship, there HAS to be a problem. Remember they even took Willie Williams! Also saw Kiffin on PTI today and he looked scared…was very very careful with his words…he’s a boy in a mans game. Also look for a major Fla newspaper to break a story on how Kiffin lied and cheated with the Raiders!

Oh, and some guy asked about UGA’s 5 NC’s: 1927, 1942, 1946, 1968 and 1980. Same sources that awarded UT six (or whatever the number), Ga Tech six, etc., etc. But who’s counting.

“Wow. If it weren’t for Kiffin there would be quite a few unemployed reporters. Is there anything else going on in the news or do certain people have man-crushes on Lane? This makes at least two stories in the AJC this week alone. And it’s good to see so many UGA fans with undergarments in a bunch over Lane as well. This recruit is the ONLY one saying anything bad about Kiffin - and AFTER he said it was not worth talking about.”

Rubbish. There’s not another clownish jackass creating negative press for himself in college ball on Kiffen’s level. He’s getting exactly what he deserves.

“Strange that something not worth discussing is worth spilling over to anyone who will listen.”

Idiotic. AJ has made no comment whatsoever other than to confirm the statement was made. Just as Erick Mack(forget about recruiting this beast UcheaT) and Coach Wilson. AJ can’t help it if Kiffen said something so utterly classless, cheesy, and controversial that reporters are calling to verify the story.

“You guys are obsessed with Lane. Just move on. If Kiffin is unproven and not worth anything, why do you all spend your time reading up on all the stories, digging up stats, living on blogs, and commenting endlessly about him? Man-crushes…all of you.”

Nah, it’s just fun watching the slow motion train wreck ongoing from the minute UT made the most absurdly idiotic hire by a BCS program in ages.

Well, S. Carolina (USC is in Calif) has had only ONE mediocre team under Dark Visor…

    …the rest were terrible.

Like my coach in HS told me, “Son, you might be small…but you’re slow.”

Everyone likes a joke, right..? On recruits coming to Athens : First, you show them where you can legally drink under-age (wink-wink) and introduce ‘em to the team Bail and Bondsmen. Then, offer a Tom-Tom as a learning tool. Maps out all the one-ways in town. A copy of Rules of the Road by the ACCPD wouldn’t hurt either. A handbook of Do’s and Don’ts on Inappropriate Touching of Others might come in handy. A short film study on The Fine Art of Spoonin’ in Public Places, narrated by one, Mr. Stafford. Heck, it might even be an acredited course for Freshman by now…Yeah, we all love a joke, right JW..?

Saw Lame Kitten on ESPN yesterday and he looked like a deer in the headlights. So when he gets his 5-15 record going will Neyland Stadium be nicknamed The Litter Box?

    I agree with secfootballrocks:

Lame Kiffin’s lifetime head coaching record is 5-15 before he was called a LIAR and fired by Al Davis. Quite a catch for UT.

After UT gets it’s arse kicked 7 or 8 times next year and ends with losses to Vandy and Kentucky, UT fans will all just be sitting there with those same blank dumb expressions.

I also heard one of the reasons Grandma didn’t want her grandson to go to UT is because Ed Orgeron showed up at her house for the recruiting visit with alcohol on his breath.

Ed always was an idiot and a loser.

Of course that would NEVER get play in the AJC…that was an afterthought article. This happened/didn’t happen over a MONTH ago and NOW the AJC and ESPN want to make a story because nothing NEW has come up lately.”

I think it’s ironic that the coach and the kid both say over and over to move on and it’s not worth talking about just keep repeating the story over and over. There seems to be a two-faced attitude coming from the classless coach and his player. It seems they are in no hurry to move on by retelling the story every time a camera or reporter stands in front of them.”

Absurd lies from another of the UcheaT faithful. Kiffen’s pathetic comment drives the press, and neither AJ nor Coach Wilson have said ANYTHING beyond verifying the comment was made and saying they don’t want to talk about it. They have every right to confirm the comment EVERY TIME they’re asked when that unqualified incompetent jackass is openly lying and effectively smearing both AJ and his Coach who only a biased or ignorant idiot would refer to as classless. Class is clearly a concept beyond the ken of your average billy goat.

“Kiffin’s record with recruits is perfect. Only this one media ho coach claims something negative while every other recruit Kiffin has dealt with says the opposite. I’m more inclined to side with 99.9% of those having GOOD things to say about Lane rather than a guy proving himself to not have any credibility by lying about the insignificance of this but doing the exact opposite.”

BS. Jarvis Giles stated plainly that negative recruiting by incompetent child-Coach Kiffen pushed him firmly into the Gamecock’s camp. The characterization of Coach Wilson is fallacious and illustrates the desperation of the UcheaT faithful in trying to avoid the writing on the wall that screams to the world that UT made a horrifically idiotic hire pulling in a proven loser already exposed as Peter Principle case.
