UGA-bound Orson Charles says he’s focused on Bulldogs, not Florida
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Orson Charles said a “horrible” recruiting effort by Florida’s former tight ends coach was one of the major reasons he didn’t sign with the BCS champions, the Palm Beach Post reported.
The tight end from Tampa signed with Georgia last Friday over Southern Cal and Tennessee. Charles had also considered Florida earlier in the recruiting process.
When the AJC asked Charles about the comment on Wednesday night, he said, “I’m not trying to stir anything up. I’m trying to get ready to go to the University of Georgia. The only thing that really turned me off about Florida was I had a gut feeling it wasn’t the best place for me. However, I wish Florida the best. Right now, my only focus is getting ready to play at Georgia.”
According to the Post’s Ben Volin, Charles said the Florida assistant John Hevesy, who left the Gators in January for Mississippi State, was one of the biggest reasons Charles isn’t a Gator. The story said that Florida later assigned another coach to recruit Charles, but it was too late.
“John Hevesy, when he came, that was just horrible. That turned things around,” Charles was quoted by the Post. “He just wasn’t a good recruiter. He wasn’t really recruiting me, just calling me once a month.”
Charles said he has met three out of the last four days with Aaron Murray to study Georgia’s playbook. Charles and Murray played together at Tampa’s Plant High, which won Florida’s Class AAAA championship last December. Murray, who plays quarterback, signed with Georgia and enrolled early in college. Murray returned to Tampa this week for Spring Break.

Lame Kitten said that he went to UGA becuase Orson’s grandmothers aunt told him that if he went to UGA he would be pumping gas, but if he went to UT he would be learning how to pump gas in an orange jump suit like the rest of the Travis Henry type of players.

I think Orson is a good kid and a talented player and I wish him the best at UGA. I think things got off to an awkward start that weekend when he dropped the crystal football at UF, which maybe the coach could’ve handled better and not freaked out and I’m sure it freaked out Orson. But I think Urban has the highest regard for Orson and UF would have loved to have him. It just wasn’t a good fit and Orson was right in following his instincts. I DO want to personally applaud the kid for being smart enough for not choosing the University of Tennessee. We’re looking forward to the kill.

Is Lame Kitten the best you guys could come up with? That’s pretty pathetic. The UGA rednecks have sunk to a whole new low. But hey, it’s ok Orson didn’t pick UT, because we got Bryce Brown coming to us on Monday. Have fun with Wayshaun “this guys gonna be the next Herschel” Ealy.

The next Hershcel is a little over the top as he has not even played a down of CFB. I hope your right. I don’t know when Hevesey started recruiting but, at some point he had one foot in Starkeville while trying to do the Gator shuffle. You can’t have two masters. That is why it is important to keep a staff together as much as possible. This was not typical recruiting from UF and it is hard to imagine Havesey really wanted to be at UF for whatever reason. Probably a good move for UF and Havesey to move on. Regardless of why, I am glad OC chose UGA. Go Dawgs.

A Florida paper is mad that Orson Charles didn’t sign with Florida and blames it on a coach no longer at Florida. What a convenient excuse to make Urban and the nationla champs save face after getting beat out by Georgia on two top 100 recruits with Charles and Aaron Murray.

You can bet that CUM wanted this kid, just like he wanted Murray. He just did not show his bag of sour grapes so much on losing Orson. He also knows that when his QB is no longer eligible to play at UF, that he no longer wants to be there. The wheels are going to come off of the Florida wagon in 2009, just as they did in 2007. They are way too arrogant and overconfident already. Tebow’s comment about giving away those tickets to “Come see us beat UGA again is going to bite him in the butt more than he knows. If he thinks not having Harvin and those Offensive linemen is not a “Big deal”, then he will just have to see for himself. Personally, I like our chances in Jacksonville this year, and can’t wait till Halloween!

Gator fans are always amused by the Poodle Nation. You think we’re afraid of UGA? We understand your frustration but don’t sympathize with your plight.
Do you really think Urban is losing any sleep over losing a few recruits? The Gators & Poodles lose recruits every year. No team lands every player they recruit.
While the Poodle Nation is celebrating their recruiting victories I’m going to view our ‘06 & ‘08 BCS title wins again.

Wow, who really cares other than Dawg fans what brought this kid to Georgia. I’m sure it was a saintly effort that was clean and above board by the celestial coaching staff at Georgia that convinced him that God wanted him to be a Bulldog. Good for him, the problem is not that he’s a Dawg, he’s destined to play for a pretty nice program that will bring him national attention and unrealistic expectations by the fan base. But what else is new, they’ve been delusional ever since Herschel ran over Bill Bates.

You Run. See Aaaaarrrroooonnnn throw. You catch. Good dawg. See Coach smile.
Shoot isn’t his eligibility still in doubt. Must be nice to be able to recruit terrific football players who have to be tutored on how to read. Maybe the 14th year of education is the trick? K-12 and then four years at Georgia and he will leave with about an 8th grade intellect.
Must be fun to root for such.

Geez, just relax everyone. Nowadays there are microphones in everybody’s face and there are more opportunities for players or coaches to make quips that angers an enitre region. They are all competitors whose main goal is to be the best and to try and lead their repective teams to victory. It’s just competition. Good luck to all the recruits of all teams. I hope my Georgia Bulldogs get to the top of the pile. We are close, just need that special player to unite the team and give us the skill to push us over.

more often than not kids want to be told the truth rather than just hearing what people think they want to hear. it’s called “being real” with them. they can see through the BS. in the end it’s about relationships. being straight up with high school players ultimately gets the job done. some you miss on and some you get. but kids often say after the fact that they wish they’d done something differently because they were sold a bill of goods.
The Dawgs shoot straight with kids. That is what builds relationships with families and coaches in the long run.

Columbus Dawg we should have beat the gayturds last year. We got down to their 15 yard line early in the 3rd quarter only to have Staffords pass picked off and run back 80 plus yards. In the first half Michael Moor dropped a wide open pass right down the middle of the field which he would have scored on. Stafford missed a wide open Tripp chandler in the end zone, Moreno let a TD pass bounce off of his face mask and Blair Walsh missed two point blank field goals or we are winning at half time and it is a different ball game in the second half. I do agree with you about the talent flurda is losing, and I also agree that talk is cheap. Finally as much as I hate the gayturds, I used to like tim elbow, but just like the rest of the swamp lizards, his constant jabbering and rah rah crap is wearing really thin!!!! HUNKER DOWN!!!!!!

I totally agree with Dawgstephan. He makes total sense. All of us need to simply shut up and be positive. If we were in a war defendin our country, we would be teammates. We Gators have shot ourselves in the foot in the past by talking too much. Last year, the DAWGS barked too much before the first game. This year kiffin and a few of the UT folks are mouthing off more than UF and UGA combined over the years. So what if Charles went to UGA. Hopefully he will get his education and be a productive citizen. Over the years, UF has raided GA for some outstanding players. It is called “recruiting”, and it will not change. The fact remains that both Florida and Georgia have some of the best talent in the country. Thus, coaces from other schools in other states will always be sniffing around. Both Urban Meyer and Mark Richt are good men and great recruiters. Both schools are lucky, and they provide a quality education. kiffin is simply an unproven motor mouth at this time who is embarrassing the folks who are loyal to UT. If he doesn’t win early, the VOL Nation will want his scalp as we Gators were with Zook and the DAWGS were with Ray Goff. Both UGA and UF fans should be grateful that neither school has an Athletic Director as foolish as UT’s who hired kiffin. If kiffin does well at UT, so be it. Jeremy Foley blew it in 02 when he hired Zook, and we Gators paid dearly for it, but our support never for UF never wavered. The same is true for UGA, UT, BAMA, GT, etc. during lean years. We will all know how it all has played out this season on Nov, 15. All the best to the entire SEC. GO GATORS!

Columbus Dawg LOL love it! Coach Urban Mayer = CUM LOL! Classic stuff! I think we’re seeing a pattern with Mayer & Carol…there used to getting the kids they go after or picking who they want…Well this recruiting season they didn’t get everyone they wanted then proceeded to act like spoiled brats or bullies… Obviously Lame Kitten learned under Carol add in his immaturity & inexperience he’s only taking the philosophy of playing on kids emotions (UT wild Boys, fake PC’s, coming out the tunnel etc.) &/or strong arming them into signing even further then acting like a brat that got told NO when the kid goes where his heart led him…Not totally with CUM (LOL that just makes me laugh!) but with Carol & his protégés I get the sense it’s more of a sales pitch NFL big biz deal to them i.e. the kids are parts in the machine they care what the kid can do for the program & not necessarily if it’s the best thing for the kid unlike CMR, CRG & the UGA staff…my take on UT right now is its going to be like Ed O’s run at Ole Miss they’ll get some players but won’t win big because they me 1st mentality will continue…The one chance I see of them getting things in perspective is if Monte can get Lane & Ed to understand it takes more than players then maybe they’ll have a chance to be a team instead of a bunch of hired guns…However even if they get all that straight the Taghj Boyd mess may haunt lane because QB play could be an issues for the next few seasons so I still say in 3 or 4 years he’s gone due to his record or because they get hit with probation

Not a big deal. The kid is young and 18 year olds are going to make mistakes with what they say. As for recruiting its not a big deal for UF to lose this kid to UGA. There is so much talent in Fla. and in the southeast in general that there are plenty of good players to go around. UGA may steal a few players out of Florida and vice versa, Every state loses a few instate players to out of state schools every year. I just don’t think anyone wants to lose an instate player to the buffoon over at UT. If so you would never hear the end of it like when Kiffin was crowing about getting Nu’keese Richardson out of Fla. Good luck to this kid at UGA. They’ll bring him along as to what is okay to say and what is not cool to say.

It doesn’t matter who we have as a head coach. We never beat the gators. This isn’t even really a rivalry game anymore. ‘Rivalry’ implies that we actually have a remote shot in hell of winning. We’d have to win 10 in a row to even make it a legitimate game again.

UGA couldn’t FINISH THEIR OWN DRILL against UF last year and without Knowshon I dont see that changing. UF wins the 09’ cocktail party , but it wont be a 39 point beatdown as it was last year.

Two out of three years with national championships—-some overrated tight end will not change things at all. Florida’s at the top, will win another title this year, and has more studs for 2010 that may be even better than this year’s group. Georgia—maybe they can come up with a new taunting penalty and get their tight end involved this year in jacksonville, to “fire up the players”! Mark it down: UF beats USC this year for the national title and it will not be that close. Georgia will play in another minor bowl somewhere, thinking about their last title way back in ….. 1980! Greg Reid, I marvel at comments such as yours.
Spurrier’s comments were uttered in 1991 when he barely had a taste of beating UGA. He directed it towards Ray Goff. I had the same doubts about Goff at the time, and I don’t think you’ll find many people here who will defend his tenure at UGA.
UGA regularly finishes in the top 10 in recruiting classes, and we seem to finish the season ranked in the top 10 most years since CMR has arrived. We are also one of only two teams (USC) to win 10 games for 6 out of the past 7 years.
No, we haven’t won 2 NCs in the past 3 years (congrats by the way) and we have been dominated by UF for longer than I care to remember. That being said, I would hardly refer to UGA as “non-relevant”. 82 wins in the past 8 years is very relevant.
If NCs are the sole measure of relevance, then the only relevant programs in college football for the past 4 years are Florida, LSU and Texas. While these teams achieved the highest honor, I hardly think they are the only relevant teams in college football.
Enjoy UFs success while you have it. Things tend to go in cycles in college football and I’m sure you can remember the Ron Zook years. To this day I still haven’t figured out how he got that job.

Who cares who goes where, they’ve got to line up and play at some point and that is simply what it is all about. GT beat UGA; congrats! Fla beat UGA, OK, ditto! UT lost to UGA, way to go UGA! So what?
UGA can be 0-5 after 5 games next year with their schedule. Twice as tough as last years. There should be really only 2 games of concern for UGA.

Obviously the pressure of going to UF was more than Orson could bear the thought of. If he freaks and drops the NC trophy, how in the world will he handle the pressure in a game day situations with a real football?

Wow, who really cares other than Dawg fans what brought this kid to Georgia. I’m sure it was a saintly effort that was clean and above board by the celestial coaching staff at Georgia that convinced him that God wanted him to be a Bulldog. Good for him, the problem is not that he’s a Dawg, he’s destined to play for a pretty nice program that will bring him national attention and unrealistic expectations by the fan base. But what else is new, they’ve been delusional ever since Herschel ran over Bill Bates. You must have cared, or you would not have commented , its funny how many people say they could careless, then they have to explain why they do not care, news flash actions speak louder than words.

To those UGA or other fans who choose to disrespect Coach Meyer by refering to him by initials CUM, you’d better be careful ‘cause he will be “all in your face” again like he was last year. Last year he was angry with Richt and proceeded to go a step further and “screw the pooch.” If I was A UGA follower, I’d be real quiet about this years matchup because I think Urbans ire will be squarely focused on the Viles, which he will do his level best to DESTROY this year! Yep, I expect ‘ol Smokey to be howlin’ that day!

People - get a freakin’ grip! It is March 12…approximately 6 months until the season begins. The economy is in a shambles, unemployment is at an alarming high, 50% of the popultion doesn’t have health insurance and we have a young and “green” president in office to take care of this mess. And yet, people on here are calling each other names over an 18 year old recruit, Urban Meyer’s initials and a coach who can’t keep his mouth shut??? My advice (for what it’s worth)…step back from things, take a deep breath and PRIORITIZE!!!
As for something relevant, good luck to the B-ball Dawgs TODAY in Tampa!

Dawgsin2009, yes, Zook did beat us more times than not. What I was referring to was how UFs program dropped when the wrong person was put in charge (similar to us with Goff).
While Zook did continue UFs dominance over UGA, he lost more home games in 3 years than Spurrier lost in 12 years. Also, he NEVER beat a ranked opponent in the Swamp. That HAD to be a shock to the UF faithful. That’s all I was alluding to. I wasn’t bashing UF. It’s tough to do that with a straight face when you consider what they accomplished under Spurrier and Meyer.

Orson Charles made a decision that’s best for him. UGA fans better hope he isn’t a premadonna type kid that doesn’t pan out. It makes sense to follow Murray to UGA if you’re Charles…
To say that UF is worried over the recruiting class of others is silly.
Can’t wait til the season starts…looking forward to that guaranteed W from Tenn that Kiffster bragged about

I agree with the Dawg above with all the initials in his monicker. What the hell does that stand for anyway? The AJC can out out garbage like this and all the knee jerk fans start insulting each other and fill up the comments section. Why don’t We hold out for some real news. Then maybe the reporters will start doing some real work. Now for something important. I heard on a local sports talk show that the NCAA has asked for copies of all current TV contracts at the University of Alabama. Does this mean a possible TV ban for Bama over some relatively minor infractions? Remember that Bama has recently been on probation, so they could be facing stiffer penalties than another team that made the same mistake. Saban pushes the envelope and has butted heads with the NCAA before, but I don’t believe he has ever been found guilty of a violation. I have to believe that someone in the compliance office dropped the ball. What will happen if Bama is banned from TV? That means a ban from post-season play in most cases, so a bowl game AND the SECCG would follow suit. I think Bama would have to be considered the favorite in the west, at least for now, so all of us in the SEC would be affected. How about doing a little work on this story AJC? Mr Charles wants move on with his career at UGA and let all this go. I am sure Meyer is doing the same. Why bring up this non-story now?

UF didn’t recruit this kid that hard—-they’ve got so much talent on the team, they will be stocked for years on offense. Their tight end mainly blocks, and catches the inside option pitch every now and then. If they really wanted Charles, they would have gotten him easily—-lukewarm interest, so he had to take the georgia offer. Florida will blow out Ga again this fall in Jax, and I will win big cash on my Vegas bets once again!!! Sorry dawgs—-maybe next year.

Florida did not want this kid. What a joke- every school in the country wanted this kid.He is a rare hybrid very scary mathup.I have been a high school coach at the 5A level and trust me this kid is a defensive coordinators biggest nightmare.Georgia will put him in the slot-at TE-and run some H-back formations for him.6-3 230 and very fast.

To say that Charles is not a “traditional” TE and therefore UF didn’t want him is like saying Tebow was not a “traditional” QB and those schools he turned down didn’t want him. Doesn’t make sense.

uga has its work cut out for it, but there will be a great base of talent to recover this year.
4) obvious problems from last year, in my order of significance:
1) red zone offense stagnation 2) penalties 3) defensive pass rush 4) kicking

Mr Charles words need repeating. “… “I’m not trying to stir anything up. I’m trying to get ready to go to the University of Georgia…I had a gut feeling it wasn’t the best place for me…I wish Florida the best…”
No coaching needed on what to say. The kid has class and should one day be a Bulldog great. Maybe one could blame the P.B. Post for trying to “stir things up”, but not OC.
Urban Crier might be a “superior coach”. But most SEC fans have little respect for him. He likes to run up the score; likes to call time with 2-3 mins left and big leads, rubs it in; keeps his star QB in games with lopsided scores and mins to go; complains if another school gets a recruit out of FL - with FL being 3rd only to TX and CA in number of recruits, etc etc etc, ad nauseum.
How many Dawg’s fans run their months at Flawduh Gaytor blogs?

Meyer wanted Charles. Charles did not want to be a Gator from long ago…and I can’t believe this guy would bad mouth a coach who isn’t even at Florida anymore. You have a lot of football talent, Mr. Charles, but you better focus on going to class and not spending time bad mouthing coaches who spend time and money offering you a free college education. Don’t you think Miss. State is going to be fired up when they play the Dawgs next? Yep! Two former Florida coaches…of which one you trashed. Maybe you should have committed to Tennessee and Mr. “Running of the Mouth” Kiffin. Seems to me you would have fit in better with him in Knoxville. But you are still a very good football player. So just shut up and go play, will you. I know the Gators will be ready when you show up in Jax.

OC made the decision he thought was in his best interest, good luck to Mr. Charles. I don’t know if UF wanted him or not, but it would seem that the coach assigned to recruiting him had more on his mind than UF hence, he is now coaching somewhere else. GA-FL should be a great game, it should have been last year, but UGA didn’t show up and the Gators did. Props to UF for staying focused. Being able to f******* simply made the Gators the best team last year. No disrespect to the talent level at UF but, UGA didn’t show up, it is amazing we were even in the game at halftime. The lack of f******* was coaching and player leadership. Hopefully, both will be corrected this season. I’m sure Richt will be more f******* this year and I believe Cox will help the offense and Owens will help the Defense. UGA has the talent and coaching to accomplish the same feats that UF and LSU have, UGA has to simply put it all together. Props to UF and LSU for doing so.

The Dawgs are loaded with talent. So are the Gators. Florida is not playing a bunch of freshman and sophmores on the offensive line. That is why Florida has a NC. If Moreno and Stafford were playing behind a veteran OL guaranteed NC

What if UGA would of had DEs that could rush the passer? Would WM’s defense work? Yes there were MISSED ASSIGNMENTS, POOR TACKLES, NOT GETTING OFF BLOCKS, PENALTIES, PENALTIES, PENALTIES, THE OPPOSING OFFENSE ALWAYS STARTED AT THE 40 OR 50 YARD LINE, NO RUSH ON PASSER WHAT SO EVER(NONE) EXCEPT IN THE BOWL GAME HMMMM!, WHAT ELSE???? THE PLAYERS COME OUT OF THE LOCKER ROOM WITH NOT ENOUGH TOUGHNESS AND EMOTION.

it never ceases to amaze me at the numbers of non-UGA fans trolling an Atlanta newspaper/UGA blog. Its pathetic that you get so offended that us Dawg fans are excited about our team and the future. It doesnt matter how many times you type “45-42” or talk trash about the cocktail party…..we are still going to be bulldawg fans….we are still going to expect great seasons ahead. Thats what makes football fun and I would think all good fans are like that for any team. Sure every fans base has it’s delusional members but if you dont like it, dont come to our blogs. It’s as simple as that. I hope you realize that trolling only makes you look that much more desperate and sad…the truth is no one cares what you think. I mean, many of you are on here every single day…and supposedly “dont care” about our team. Get a life.

Vandy, the reason so many fans of other teams, including Florida, make comments on these blogs is because quite frankly Atlanta IS the capital of the south and especially the SEC. I live in Tampa and we don’t really have a newspaper here that can match the AJC for all around all year coverage of college football. Maybe the Orlando Sentinel is a distant second. But still…not close. I personally think it makes it interesting and I don’t miss the season quite as much!
