Lane Kiffin denies “pumping gas” accusation, says ESPN report
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin denied telling South Carolina recruit that he “would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life” on Tuesday, according to ESPN.
Alshon Jeffrey of St. Matthews, S.C., one of the nation’s top prospects at wide receiver, signed with South Carolina after an intense recruiting battle with Southern Cal and Tennessee.
On Tuesday, Kiffin told ESPN, “I never said that to Alshon, nor would I say anything like that… That’s just not something I would say.”
ESPN’s Chris Lowe had reported, “Kiffin told Jeffrey during the wee hours of the morning on national signing day that he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players in the state of South Carolina if he signed with the Gamecocks.”
Two weekends ago on Tennessee’s Junior Day, several assistants pulled a shirt-ripping stunt to get prospective recruits excited about Tennessee football.

Of course Kiffen denies this…
He lies on the front end. He lies on the back end.
What did you expect him to say? Yes!?!? I’m sure the fact that both Jeffrey and his coach Wilson confirm that he said this doesn’t mean much.
Looks more and more like Al Davis was actually the incredibly sane one when he fired Kiffen for acting like a 12 year old.

I’m actually hoping we aren’t very good this year so that we can get rid of this guy and not have to endure 2-3 seasons of him.
If we’re not careful, we’ll be the complete laughing stock of the entire nation.

The fact that we’re ready to believe it about Kiffin is really all you need to know. He’s already more than demonstrated that he’ll shoot his mouth off without thinking - time and time again. And I wouldn’t be giving Al Davis so much credit. I mean he’s the one that gave the kid the job coaching his team in the first place - a stupid decision that gave Kiffin some name recognition that ultimately landed the UT job for him. I’ve said for months that I give the UT fans two years before they pull a Bill Battle on him - shoot his dog and send a moving van to his house.

Well, you can believe a coach who has been loose with his jibs and jabs at opponents, but took the time to deny this specific report. Or if you choose, you can believe a HS player and coach who allegedly had their minds made up and nothing was going to change them, but still entertained offers throughout the night from SoCal and UT. I’ll be very surprised if anyone other than a Vol fan admits to believing Kiffin’s side of the story. Where’s the big story then? Meanwhile, where’s our opening day spring practice report from Tennessee?
I mean if the AJC is going to stalk Kiffin, let’s cover EVERYTHING.

O.K., I take half of it back. There is a small AP report concerning UT’s opening day of spring practice. There’s no AJC byline though, so I guess the coaching part is less exciting than trumping up old (and sometimes, false) news concerning Kiffin.

Of course we are going to bash and laugh at Lane now because once he gets rolling up there our chances of winning anything is over. Our window of opportunity walked out the door with Fulmer. So now he’s calling the kid a liar too? This clown just keeps digging himself a deeper and deeper hole. Lets see, who should we believe? The high school kid that has absolutely no motive to make up such a story or the jacka$$ coach that erroneously accused an opposing coach of cheating? Hey Buzz…thanks, I needed that. Haven’t had a reason to shoot my mouth off about Tech in some time. Now I’ll be sure to look for some. As for my stupidity, not sure what you’re referring to. If I have an opinion, I’ll express it. If it’s wrong then time will tell. As for the Bill Battle comment - I assure you it happened. Then again, maybe they just ran over the dog, I wasn’t really there. What I do know is Tennessee fans have fallen out of love with every coach they’ve had since Doug Dickey and each left with more than a bitter taste…Battle, Majors, Fulmer…to name three.

I know its real fashionable to bash Kiffin and I hate to pile on, but this could go down as one of the worst hires in college football history. It has nothing to do with his big mouth, although that certainly doesn’t help. This guy is simply not SEC head coach material. His meteoric rise in the coaching ranks is due in large part to his name and simply being in the right place at the right time. He had a nice little run as USC’s offensive coordinator, but who wouldn’t be able to put up big numbers with Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush & Co. against those pathetic Pac 10 defenses? Other than that, he hasn’t done anything. He is in over his head. Think of all the great head coaches and programs in the SEC. Meyer, Spurrier, Saban, Richt, just to name a few. Think about what they have accomplished and the brilliance their teams have displayed on the football field. They will toy with this guy. This is going to be an epic disaster for Tennessee football. Brace yourselves.

Did he or didn’t he? Well for one, I personally have never read anything false on the Internet. Every story ever printed in cyberspace is 100% without a doubt true. For example, Sarah Palin didn’t give birth to the boy with downs syndrome, her daughter did. Get the point? If anyone with half a brain considers the source, they’ll let Kiffin slide on this one…Clemson09, nobody cares about the ACC (almost competetive conference) so shut up about Dumbo Sweeny and go pump some gas!

I believe the Tennessee AD,Mike Hamilton, had to be bold and hire a coach to right their ship. The Vol Nation,IMHO,wants to get back on top of two situations…Florida(the Beast of the East)and dreaded Alabama(Nick Saban,Inc)…UT seems to be fairly competitive with the other SEC schools but those two make for a hard life.
If Kiffin doesn’t work out,I would imagine Mr Hamilton’s crown would rest uneasy on his head. After all,he opened up the bank account to buy his way back on top.

ESPN has Kiffy’s response as….
“That’s not the way we’re going to do things here, and it’s something I don’t condone,” Kiffin said. “Things get said all the time in recruiting, but I don’t know where (the pumping gas comment) came from.”
In other words he’s not sure if he said it or not, but sometimes things are said in recruiting, doesn’t seem so much a denial as a slip of the tongue. Seems Kiffy has had quite a few of these…

Kiffin makes Spurrier of by-gone days look like an altar boy. The boy needs to take a course in coaching diplomacy ASAFP. He could learn a lot from Vince Dooley and Bobby Dodd, if he was still around, about how not to antagonize the teams you play, and in this case, the state you wish to recruit in.

Dear Ummmmmmm, I sort of realize I’m reading a Georgia paper, but you couldn’t tell it from the wall-to-wall Kiffin coverage in this paper. If a little old lady from Ga. or Ala. or Fla. heard Kiffin fart in line at the store, it would make the AJC. These guys will print anything Kiffin, whether it’s true or not. BTW, at least two of these stories have already been proven false. So, as long as we’re going to have to read everything Kiffin in the AJC, the least the paper could do is actually cover the coaching part of his day to go along with the made up gossip parts. Just like in the fall, all Kiffin losses (probably 3 or 4) will be in big bold print in the AJC, but the wins will be in small print and hidden.

“Lame Kitten” probably did make those comments…which wasn’t wise for a coach, but probably (somewhat) accurate. The fact is that many of these “bluechip” recruits would be digging ditches, flipping burgers, etc. if it wasn’t for their God-given talent(s). Instead of being humble/thankful for that talent, far too many recruits believe their own press/hype & are arrogant (demanding jersey #s, etc.).

I can only go by what I read about Kiffin, but needless to say, it is not flettering, and he does not seem to have the experience or track record to make this work at UT. That being said, as a parent, I feel bad for all of the student-athletes that are making a decision to go to UT, if indeed, this guy is not ready to run a major college football program like UT. I hope somebody there at UT is working to increase these student-athletes’ chances of getting a degree, because the football program might hit ‘rock bottom’.

Where there is smoke, there must be fire.
There is enough smoke around Kiffen to question his integrity. He is proving himself to be a loose cannon. UT would be a great place to play and get an education, but if my kid had other offers, he would certainly go anywhere other than UT. I would not trust Kiffen to be that responsible.

Remember a football coach in the early 90’s who liked to run his mouth, and ended up being ugas, and uts nightmare, now uga is afraid with fulmer gone and a new coach in they could be back to 3rd in the east every year. I almost think kiffin is doing this just to mix the pot to keep the actual football team off the radar so they will be able to sneak up on people during the season. UT will win some games this year prolly go about 8-4, but the way kiffin is able to recruit will be contending for a confence title soon enough, if he can hopefully learn to keep his mouth shut.

I’m inclined to believe the kid when you stop and think about the term “you’ll be pumping gas somewhere”. This a term an older generation would use or that someone whose dad is from an older generation like Kiffin’s dad would use. Where and how would an 18 year old kid in today’s world come up with that term?
We all know and especially 18 year old kids that outside of New Jersey pretty much everyone pumps their own gas. Its been awhile since I’ve seen a gas station employee pump someone else’s gas but I’m sure that like me Lane Kiffin has probably seen the same thing growing up and has probably heard the same “you’ll be pumping gas insult” several times from the generation above him. But this kid. I doubt this kid has probably ever heard this term so why would he make it up?
On top of that several people not just Al Davis have accused Kiffin of being a compulsive liar.
For the record I’m an Alabama fan but I’m actually feeling pretty bad for UT fans right now. How much more of this idiot can they take?

Brew, What two stories have been “proven” false? This latest story is word against word, not much proof that it is or isn’t true. Altough by the way Kiffin has run off at the mouth, it gives us pause to believe the recruit and his high school coach.
Now we have all been talking about Kiffin and his errant ways, we can’t really say what he will do as a coach. He has at least one great coach on Defense “Daddy Kiffin” and that should be enough to keep UT in games. Say what you will about “little Kiffy” but, “Daddy Kiffin” know his stuff. Had I said something like that to a student or potential student I would have been fired immediately. We had a professor get fired for telling a kid at mid-term that there was no mathematical way for him to pass his class. In today’s politically correct environment you just can’t tell a kid anything in a negative manner because it just might hurt their widdle self-esteem.
Having said that, and considering a preponderance of the evidence against the accused I find him guilty.

Fl Dawg, here’s another. Remember before Kiffin was even hired, Spurrier in a roundabout way accused him of contacting recruits before he had the job or taken the NCAA recruiting test (insert “Yeah and I know which question he failed” jokes here). Now Slive didn’t run to Kiffin’s defense or demand an apology from Spurrier and all the SEC folks just chalked it up to Steve being Steve, but that story just died a quick silent death. No big AJC story, no ESPN crawl, it just went away. Hope that helps.

So now he’s calling the kid a liar too? And his coach too, since the coach was in the room and they were on the speakerphone.
The number of high schools where Tennessee coaches are going to be welcome to show their faces is dwindling fast.
I also predict a number of quality Division 1AA teams in the South when the Tennessee players realize that they are playing for a dysfunctional coaching staff.
I would have transferred when Ed Orangatang stripped off his shirt like that fat guy on Saturday Night Live.

Here’s the rest of the story jaxjag from a Knoxville paper’s article on the subject:
“Tiffany Carpenter, UT’s director of public relations, said Kiffin had a change of heart about the firing.
“The (Sports Illustrated) interview happened the day of the incident,” Carpenter said. “At that time, (Kiffin) wanted to fire that individual but after further thought and discussions decided that was not in the best interest of Tennessee.”
There’s always another side to a story. Chris Low at ESPN didn’t wait for that in this gas pumping story. He gave the child’s side with no rebuttal or response from Kiffin. Didn’t matter; Low got the attention he wanted for the story.

Did Baby Kiffen see what happened to Mark Richt when he pulled his little stunt to Florida? And Georgia got off easy. Meyer will play by the rules. Tebow will sit mid quarter three, and Florida will still destroy UT by 70 plus points. Think these crazy Vol fans who think he is the Man will wake up out of their moonshine stupor by then? Saban, Spurrier, and Richt will try like hell to match that score- will come up short….but it will be ugly or fun from where one is sitting.

ToC, I think I speak for most (not all) Vol fans when I say, “So what? Like Mr. Point and Stare wasn’t going to run up the score anyway if he got the chance?” Anytime a coach has a chance to run it up on Tennessee they do it. Tebow was throwing for the end zone two years ago with a 4 TD lead in the fourth. If you can run it up on a name team like Tennessee, you do it. All this blather about what Kiffin allegedly said on anything won’t add one TD to any game. You have to win and win as big as possible or lose your spot in the BCS standings. It is funny to see non-Gator fans hide behind Florida and talk trash about the beatdown that hasn’t happened yet. You’d think they’d want to do their own dirty work and not take glory in someone else’s success.

I’m waiting with baited breath for those pictures on You Tube of Ed’s pierced nipples. Lane has been way too distracted at home and he is just not capable of “finishing”(or starting for that matter). When we hooked up I never thought I would be searching You Tube for some graphic displays of Orgeron Eye Candy.

Who cares about Elaine Kiffin. What i’m more worried about is that LOSER who posted at 9:32am who labeled himself “Cop Killer.” Are you freaking kidding me w/ that name?! Show some damn respect to the badge you piece of freaking crap!

Volmits are an after-thought. The more he says what he says, and he said it, the more it is obvious that this is exactly what he is known for saying.
Lame Kitten has denied all kinds of statements he absolutely said. He continues to lie and misrepresent what he does say and what he did say. He makes excuses for what he says. He is called on the carpet daily and even Vince Dooley said this Lame Kitten CHILD is immature.
Notice he doesn’t say what he did say ?
Doesn’t try to say it was meant as something else ?
Open Mouth, Switch Feet - Lame Kitten.
Congratulations volmits, you remain an after-thought with a horrid coach.

Kiffen is going to eat s** this season. What has Kiffen done in the past? What did he do in the NFL? What has his assistant who have been head coachs at other schools done?
NOTHING!
This is a wannabe spurrier. He is “trying” to be like spurrier….but he will NEVER…EVER…be like spurrier.
