Lane Kiffin told prospect “he would end up pumping gas,” says ESPN report
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin had some stinging last words for Alshon Jeffrey, one of the nation’s top wide receivers, according to ESPN.com.
Jeffrey of St. Matthews, S.C., signed with South Carolina last month after an intense recruiting battle with Southern Cal and Tennessee.
According to ESPN’s Chris Low, “Kiffin told Jeffrey that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina.”

Two weekends ago on Tennessee’s Junior Day, several assistants pulled a shirt-ripping stunt to get prospective recruits excited about Tennessee football.

Kiffin has emotional and mental problems. His daddy certainly didn’t kick his a$$ enough. What an embarrassment to himself, his family, his employer, and his profession. This guy should not be allowed in public without a muzzle on his loud obnoxious mouth. If he had said that to my son, I’d punch the punk out.

Teams will be lining up to stomp Tennesee-even mild mannered Bobby Johnson from Vanderbilt will get his pint of blood.Kiffin knows he wont be on the field for any of this,so he will throw his team to the wolves. You can bet your life Tennesee will get beat by some really big scores that would not have happened if he would of just shown some class and shut his mouth. His team is now going to pay a huge price on the field for his ignorant mouth. You will not see teams bring in backups in the 4th Qtr Tennesee.Payback in the SEC is harsh and unforgiving.Kiffin will be at Tennesee for 3 yrs and leave Tennesee in major probation.Anybody who does not see this happening is an idiot.

Do you want to know something, “RealityYech,” your moronic comments only humor yourself and other juveniles such as yourself.
If you are intent on doing nothing more wasting all of our time with your drivel, I would suggest you reconsider. The AJC is finally policing the blogs, removing offensive ones, and banning bloggers such as yourself.
The AJC has finally had enough, as a majority of real sports fans have. I guess they finally got the message after receiving hundreds of complaints, and forwarded copies of insults, obscenities, and other derogatory comments from deranged brats, such as you.
Now shoo little boy. We have better things to do than to waste our time with people like you. If you continue to bother us, I promise you, I have no problem speaking with my new-found friends (and personal contacts) and ask that you, too, be removed permanently from these blogs.

Did Daddy Kiffin use little Lane as a tackling dummy for the Tampa defense or something?
This guy is unbelievable…
Look for every SEC team they play to hang 50 or more on them this year, or at least try to. How many toss sweeps can we run to the UT side of the field in the general direction of Lane Violation?

1) The kids coach was not offended and downplays the incident.
2) The kids coach implied Pete Carroll went further.

This coach (Kiffen) has really rolled the dice. If he loses 5-6 games this year, the Vol nation will be howling. Not a popular hire anyway I’m told. His Daddy might keep them competitive on the D side of the ball. They will come on the field sky high and look good for a minute or two, then talent and coaching will show up and it might get ugly. I feel for my Tennessee brotheren.

I mean how much talent pours into the NFL from the Gamecocks? I mean the genius Darth Visor is there and all and how many titles have they won? What major talent is breaking records in the NFL? Sorry if the truth hurts guys but this is reality. To the pup fans out there, how is David Greene doing in the NFL these days? Stafford better take notes on that path because he is soon to follow.

GA Tech Insider - at the risk of ticking you off and having you report me to your “new-found friends (and personal contacts)”, just when were you elected chief censor? You harp about how these blogs should be for real sports fans, yet you do nothing but preach to one particular poster. There wasn’t one shred of sports talk in your blog.
I do see where certain articles are now formatted in a way where you can report an offensive post, (and yes, there are many), but when you open the flood gates to the t**-for-tat posters such as yourself, it just becomes a game of gotcha. You must have been an Obama supporter as one of their most important issues on their agenda is reigning in talk radio and the Fox News network.
So what did Reality/Yech say that was so offensive? Making a crack about Johnson pulling a scholly? Wow, I can see why you would want that comment and poster to be blocked.
If the AJC actually does listen to you and your ilk, then it certainly explains why they are losing paying customers by the truck load.
If you don’t like what you read in these blogs then stay off. Also, I suggest you put the swastika armband back in your top drawer. Grow up little boy!

As an SEC fan, I find Kiffin an embarassment to all of the SEC Schools. I have always thought Al Davis was an idiot, but he certainly was right about this kiffin guy. I will be in my seat on Sept 19 in G’ville, and you can bet that I will be puling for UGA, BAMA and SoCAR when they play the VOLS. The sad part is that the folks in TN are really great people, and they are as loyal to the VOLs as the rest of us are to our schools. The biggest dummy in the “Knoxville Soap Opera” is the UT Athletic Director who hired Kiffin. He must have actually believe that Kiffin was the key to Southern Cal’s success vice Pete Carrol. I wonder what the Trojan fans really think about kiffin. I hate to see any SEC School become a joke, and UT is becomming a national joke. GO GATORS-DAWGS-GAMECOCKS-UK-VANDY BEAT THE KIFFINS.

Frankly, if you were a sports fan, I would suspect that you, too, would be sick and tired of all these juvenile, selfish, boorish antics and want to be done with them like the rest of us who want to talk sports.
It’s obvious, however, that you are nothing more than an ignorant buffoon like the others, and have no business on these blogs as well, so I would suggest to you that if you aren’t interested in talking sports, go somewhere else.
These blogs are reserved for sports enthusiasts, not selfish morons.

You, I would have no problem reporting. Politics is no place for the sports blogs and I assure you associating me with Nazis crosses the line with “good taste”.
I have attempted to do nothing but talk sports on these blogs for years, yet have been subjected to having to wade through pages of filth to find a few nuggets of other sports comments that are worthwhile reading.
Many of us are sick and tired of you selfish maroons who think you have the right to control the blogs and say anything you want without fear of repercussion.
Enough is enough. We have finally had it and contacted the AJC, forwarding hundreds of copies of your crude, rude, and socially unacceptable comments to their management, daily, sometimes hourly, and sometimes every minute, inundating them with your trash.
The AJC has finally started to realize that their blogs have been infected worse than computers with viruses by the likes of most of you, and they are finally beginning to scrub their systems.
Do you want to know something? Those of us who have wanted to talk sports for so long have had to endure all of your trash for so long. Now we are going to keep passing it all along to the AJC to have the content removed and all of you, and your e-mail accounts and IP addresses blocked permanently.

I missed the part where UT is now the “Academia bastion of the US.” They have put out a few good players, and yes they are really good players.
However, less than 2# of all college football players go on to play professional football of any type. So the insanity for Lame Kitten, and his open mouth insert foot policy continues. At least it give UT fans some hope while they are waiting for the new set of orange coveralls, and doe season to open.
Remember, he is going to get big time trouble for his recuriting efforts in SC, so he might as well take all of the shots he can now, and besides Steve Spurriers grandmother made that young man choose South Carolina.

I’m tired of these kids getting a free ride with all expenses paid and they don’t even bother to see it for what it is. The ironic thing is that this kid said it wasn’t worth talking about but a month later this seeps out into the news. Hmmm. Judging how every other recruit says the extreme opposite about Kiffin, I can only wonder. Add to the fact that the quote even says we should have heard Carroll. So what did HE say? If Kiffin does not produce a winning team pretty quick, he will wish he could pump gas for a living. He is an immature spoiled nonprofessional and is insecure b/c he did not pick up our recruit. Spoiled brat! Dude, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose - be an adult. UT will lose again this year and I will enjoy every minute of it. Still don’t like the way UT treated the great pumpkin, as he was one of them. Go Gamecocks in 2009!

What is Tenn. thinking? Why don’t they fire Kiffin now and save themselves the embarrasment and troubles later. This guy normally takes one dumb pill a day but I think he has overdosed the last several months.I predicted Tenn. would be on probation in 5 years. This may be optimistic,it may only be 2or 3 years.

I never take pleasure in someone else’s failures but I’m going to have to make an exception for Mr. Kiffin. Its going to be fun watching this guy get smacked silly at Tennessee. Good grief, that’s some bulletin board material if I ever saw any. He might as well have spotted South Carolina two touchdowns when they play this year. Same difference. Spurrier has single handedly ruined the careers of head coaches that crap bigger than Lane Kiffin. This guy is a total joke.

Kiffin shouldn’t have said that to the kid, but he’s kind of right. The best offensive player, Peyton Manning, and the best defensive player, Albert Haynesworth (who’s from SC originally), both went to UT. There are myriads of other good UT players in the NFL, too. The kid would probably be in a better position for the NFL from UT.

GA Tech Insider - three posts, no sports talk. You’re batting a thousand.
You mentioned people calling you names. Here’s a few quotes from your posts this morning to various individuals:
To Reality/Yech * “your moronic comments” * “from deranged brats, such as you”
To Dawg Dad * “you are nothing more than an ignorant buffoon” * “selfish morons”
And to me: * “selfish maroons”
You also continue to posture yourself as someone who wants nothing more than to talk sports, however, hall-monitor, you’ve done nothing but threatened anyone who says something you don’t like, regardless of whether it’s vulgar. Absolutely NO sports talk.
Please keep this post in mind when you accuse others of calling you names. People in glass houses…
By the way, I’ve already forwarded your harassing and insulting emails to the AJC and have placed a phone call as well. Who knows, I may have actually talked to one of your “new-found friends (and personal contacts)”. LOL!

Good morning. With the exception of GA Tech Insider (and a couple of others) it seems that most everyone here is actually engaged in talking about the article in question and SPORTS in general, believe it or not. Let’s try to keep it going.
In my opinion, I see UF and UGA being the top two teams in the SEC East with UT as a darkhorse (they still have talent). In the West I see Bama and LSU as the top two with Arkansas as the darkhorse. What are your thoughts?

Implosion in Knoxville coming! Gotta love it as a fiercely competitive Dawg fan. Only question I have is how many years before UT becomes credible again in the SEC East? My guess is 7 or 8. Fulmer is Hall of Fame material. Kiffin is, well, he’ll be fired by the end of his fourth season.

My wife was on a sports team at USC and she is a Doctor now…
Let’s see now, Tennessee has Nashville… nice town, kind of an Island in the Sea of Cousin Fornication.
Memphis? Absolute dump.
Chattanooga, dump and many of the residents live on the GA side so they do not have to tell folks they are from Tennessee…
Knoxville? Nice little college town. Couple of good bars… some good looking ladies… same as any other SEC school. it is not Athens or Oxford granted… but a nice place located in the epicenter of inbreeding for the post industrialized world.
South Carolina
Charleston? Great city, great food, great fishing, history, copious amounts of pretty woman..and so on..
Hilton Head? another nice spot with culture and lots o rich folks
Greenville? Has been said to be one of the nicest towns in the US… lots of jobs and educated people there…
Myrtle Beach? Great golf and beaches… folks from Tennesse can be seen flocking there during the warm months to get away from the sh ithole that is their state. Between the Ohioians and Tennesseeistas, the place is almost unlivable during beach season… you just can not put that much white trash in one place and expect any good tom come of it, though I am sure they appreciate your $$…
Columbia? Kinda like Knoxville… pretty campus and a river running by… school has its good points and bad, but a solid school and nice place..
But let’s be real here UT is an average school in a bad state. They have had some good sports teams and have traditionally recruited in other states because Tennesse has such little talent and anyone smart leaves or goes to Vandy…
Now to Kiffen, being a man from the South, I can tell you I have seen his type before. He is one of those guys who has fallen for the stereotype that folks from the South are beneath him in all facets. He will eventually hang himself on the rope that has been provided. Maybe, just maybe, one day, he will realize that he is the joke here… and we are all laughing… enjoy the ride UT…

Yeah, yeah, yeah, he’s just trying to get attention. We get that. But - perhaps he should wait until he’s won at least one college game before he starts dishing it out! At least Fulmer had some class - this one? Perhaps a high school will hire him where he can moonlight pumping gas after football practice!

“There are myriads of other good UT players in the NFL, too.”
None of whom Lane Kiffin had a single solitary thing to do with. You Tennessee hillbillies just don’t get it do you? You chose to fire your coach and hire a new one. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can’t fire Fulmer and then cite his accomplishments for the reason that UT is so awesome. It doesn’t work that way. He’s gone. You made him leave. The slate is now clean. The past is NOT prologue. Kiffin could be a legendary coach or a monumental failure (I’m personally leaning towards the latter). We just don’t know. That’s the point. The guy hasn’t done anything. He hasn’t put anyone in the NFL at Tennessee. He hasn’t won a single game. He has done NOTHING to this point other than embarass himself. Good day.

From Mark Richt, “I pray that the right kids come to UGA.” He wants it to be a good experience for both the athlete and college.
From Paul Johnson, “When you commit to us we view it as solid agreement and we reserve a scholly for you”. He wants to be able to depend on the word of the athlete.
From Lane Kiffin, “If you go to USC instead of UT, you’ll be pumping gas for the rest of your life”.
Just food for thought.

What is it with all these recruiting stories about these over paid SEC coaches knocking young players if they decide to go to another school? At least Kilfin is honest. Most of the players in the SEC will be pumping gas or flipping burgers if they are not fortunate enough to go to the NFL or get a degree in something other than Urban Studies or PE. The holy-than-thou bloggers on this blog could care less about these kids as long as they win games for their schools. In response to Huh?, in fact, we can have our cake and eat it to. Fulmer still has an office and a secretary at UT. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’d use his NFL connections to help any UT kid, if that was even necessary. Also, Kiffin met with a bunch of the UT players in the NFL in Knoxville last week. He’s seeking unity with the guys who played under Fulmer. Peyton still calls and talks to the UT players before big games. I’m sure he advises the ones who are NFL material, too, to some degree. He’s loyal to Fulmer, but he’ll continue doing that even with Kiffin in charge. Schools still have tradition, connections, and programs that are the same even when the coaches change.

Perfect example! Coach Richt is for the individual player. If another school is a better fit for the young man then he wishes them the best. He doesn’t look at the recruits as an assembly line or as if they are at his disposal. 1) This guy’s an idiot and so is “Smyrna Man” who asked who from USC ever did anything. I don’t think Troy Williamson, Sidney Rice, Kenny McKinley, STERLING SHARPE, Dunta Robinson, Sheldon Brown, Duce Staley, etc. need to pump they’re own gas.
2) Watch for Spurrier to highlight this kid against UT this year with a likely goal of 200+ yards receiving. Double team him if you want, but that just means you’re opening the field up for the run.
3) Like it or not…USC is moving up in the world and has been since Lou got there. Since then we’ve placed numerous kids into the NFL for big paychecks, we have new facilities (baseball stadium, basketball coliseum, and a shiny new trophy case/tradition hall for the future of Carolina Football), and, oh yeah, how about that SEC East co-title in basketball. Add in a 36 year old basketball coach phenom, a legendary baseball winning coach, and, oh yeah, that Spurrier guy, and I think everyone will see…its just cool to be a Gamecock! What other teams have a Top 5-10 coach in all three major sports?
4) UT is neck and neck with Clemson when it comes to high expectations and low results…can you say…FLOP!

It is a classless comment. But it has a lot of truth in it. What kid would go to Carolina with those choices. South Carolina is career suicide for coaches, and not much more for its players. Hell they don’t even have a QB that can throw it to him.

I love this Lane Kiffin guy. He makes Urban Meyer and Steve Spurrier look good. Tennessee should take the field this year with new jerseys with large bull’s eye targets painted on their backs.
I am not so sure UT will be able to afford to dump Lane Kiffin though. Another team would have to hire him for UT not to have to pay the buyout. What are the chances of that happening?
How many years are on the contract he signed? Hope it is a lot. it will mean years of enjoyment.

Lots Of Goofballs Out There: As if you needed any more evidence that Tennessee head coach Boy Kiffin lacks the character and mental fortitude to be a head coach in major-college football, now we find this gem from the recruitment of wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey, a highly-rated South Carolina product who ended a protracted recruiting battle between South Carolina, USC and Tennessee by picking the Gamecocks on National Signing Day. Jeffrey apparently had to endure some abuse from Kiffin when he delivered the coach the bad news; Boy told him he’d end up “pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina.”
Where does this jackass get off telling kids that? Does he really want to take responsibility for every player who goes through his Tennessee program becoming successful after football? News flash: they haven’t all been successful under his predecessor.
It’s idiocy like this which solidifies my believe that not only will Boy get fired in short order, but he’s going to flame out even more spectacularly than he did when Al Davis fired him for cause in Oakland. This guy will be lucky to get an assistant’s job at Muscle Shoals High School when he’s done.

WOW Lane was working his butt off trying to recruit someone and gets a little irrate and shows the kid he has some fire in his belly. If the kid was sure about where he was going why take the coaches for a long ride and try and get all the notoriety when he has yet to play a down. What will be ironic is the kid does end up at a meaningless job after playing a couple of years of football, who will you be upset with then?

OK. It’s a competitive business. You’ve been working the phone for days on end. That’s understood. But a statement like this proves that Lane Kiffin does not belong in college coaching. Granted, these are athletes hoping to make it in the pros, but they’re also young men who look up to coaches. And now kids will know where the UT coach’s heart is … in the sewer with all the sharks on Wall Street!

Al Davis was right when he said Kiffin was immensely immature. On top of that I’m seriously wondering if this guy has mental or emotional problems. In any event this guy just can’t stop screwing up. It would be different if it was just one embarrassing episode. But with Kiffin its this endless series of mishaps and blunders and embarrassing “He said what?” moments. It was funny and amusing for awhile. Now its just a shame really.

Hopefully nobody would be dumb enough to come on here claiming Kiffin’s right etc etc. USC(east) actually has a pretty good record of players in the NFL: 21 - 22 players currently; John Abraham(Falcons), Sheldon Brown (Eagles), Dunta Robinson (Texans) have been Pro Bowl caliber or accomplished players. Sidney Rice (Vikings), Jonathan Joseph (Bengals), Ko Simpson (Bills), Jamar Nesbit (Saints), Travelle Wharton (Panthers), Kalimba Edwards (Raiders), & Troy Williamson (Vikings to Jags) were also starters. Abraham, Robinson, Joseph, & Williamson (bust) were 1st rd draft picks. Brown, Rice, & Edwards were 2nd rd picks; Sterling Sharpe & George Rogers are the biggest name former NFL players from USC(east).

Sounds like the entire Kiffin family is messed up:
From Tampa Bay Online 06 July 2006
INDIAN SHORES - The son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense coordinator Monte Kiffin was arrested Tuesday on charges he broke into two vans to steal money and compact discs earlier in the week, Indian Shores police said.
Christopher Kiffin, 24, of 16200 Gulf Blvd., Redington Beach, was charged with two counts of burglary to a vehicle. He was released from the Pinellas County Jail on $10,000 bail within hours of his arrest.
According to arrest affidavits, Kiffin admitted to breaking into two vans along Gulf Boulevard in Redington Shores at roughly 4 a.m. Sunday. His plan was to take money and compact discs, but it was unclear from the affidavits whether he did so. Indian Shores Police Investigator Jason Routzahn declined to comment.
The affidavits say Kiffin was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the alleged crime.

ThanksAJC, GatorZone, RambleOn, gary, AllVol, Brew, et al: This story broke on ESPN; they’ve talked about it most of the afternoon on ESPN. The AJC just brings it up because it’s become national (sports) news; a continuing saga as it were.
Those who took the story at face value right off the bat: Kiffin has denied he said that to the kid.
Okay, if it’s true, it does show how Kiffin continues to put foot in mouth and adds to the impression of him being an embarassment. To think it will lead to the Vowels losing games is lame; with the exception of SC. It could conceivably be bulletin board material for them. It’s also perplexing how most Vowels fans seem to defend him.

If it happens once, it would be a slight annoyance. When it happens on every blog, it really becomes a pain in the butt. Keep up the crusade Georgia Tech Insider, I’m behind you all the way.
I’m also with you Maddog, where is the UT AD during all of Kiffin’s outbursts. Either he agrees with Kiffin’s methods or he is afraid of him. An earlier AJC article may have been correct in suggesting that Kiffin’s objective is to keep the UT name in the headlines so future recruits will remember them.
Coincidence, as I’m typing ths input, I’m watching the 5:00 pm news/sports in Los Angeles. The sportscaster is addressing the Lane Kiffin comment about Alshon Jeffrey and how inmature Kiffin sounds. Kiffin was the co OC for Pete Carrol, and the Trojans didnt miss a beat when he left. He then led the Raiders to an embarrasing season and a messy law suit with Al Davis. For UT’s sake, I hope he doesn’t lead them to a NCAA probation.

This is unacceptable and horse$h!t journalism. It is unacceptible to try to manipulate readers into thinking Kiffin said he said this to Lowe, when Lowes source was Jeffrey. I think this sort of manipulation is unacceptible and should be punished. While i do not defend kiffin if he did say that, but should we really be trusting what recruits and coaches say, recruits will switch commitments in a flash and coaches will take away scholorships (jonathan davis and SC ring a bell). kiffin could have said something inappriate to jeffrey but why are we hearing about it a month after it happened. sec fan, the problem with Kiffin is not whether he actually said those things …he has already established himself as a classless idiot who will convince a recruit to lie and then turn around and disrespect the kids whole town. Those are established facts…so this fits right in with his already moronic behavior. In another words, he has already made his bed. And the more he opens his mouth the more he confirms what everyone (other than many Vol fans)can see. Better to be thought a fool…

Big bee, Paul the Vol, Music City Dawg, sec fan: I guess it has to be repeated to you that this is a national story, on ESPN, not an AJC exclusive. “…some stinging last words …according to ESPN.com…” “…According to ESPN’s Chris Low, “Kiffin told Jeffrey…” One reader even mentions he saw it on Los Angeles news. No doubt the story has been reported in every major newspaper in the country, not to mention probably most major TV and radio shows. Don’t disparage Carvell and the AJC for running the story.

He only spoke the truth. Next he will say they will be squeegying windshields. Just like the rest of us at QuikTrip. Those offended by his comments are tools. AJC placed this story to test your IQ.

In Oregon, by state law, all gas must be pumped by a station employee. Guess the pumpers have a great lobby in the legislature there.

Tech Insider is the biggest problem this blog has had to deal with years. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
He lies about posters daily, he’s calls people names, he uses at least 10 different handles (I’ve seen 3 on this article alone) and is the very definition of a drama queen.
If you can’t handle the jabs like a man then go away and never come back. You wouldn’t be missed here just like you aren’t in your every day life. You need some hobbies other than desperately trying to find something to complain about on here. Your life is in serious need of some purpose.
I will say this though, he’s a fine example of what the Tech base is truly all about. Poor, lonely, pitiful ba$tards

Lane is a young man. Everybody says things they shouldn’t say at that age. So what?

VoR:
You seem to be saying… yes our new coach is a sleazball and says some really dumb things (and he hasn’t even coached a game yet), but there are other people who show just as little class, so it is OK.
That is like a stockbroker saying to himself, well yeah I stole $1,000,000, but that is nothing compared to how much Madoff stole.
There isn’t a single TN adminstrator that does not have a major case of buyers remorse over hiring Kiffin. The great TN program could have done much better.
Chris: The first time I drove in OR, of course, I didn’t realize I was committing a crime when I pulled up to the gas station island and got out of my car and started pumping my own gas. I’ll never forget the looks on the employees as they rushed toward me to break up my insidious crime.
The law was put on the books in the name of environmentalism, safety, and employment. Misguided? I think so.

Is the Georgia fan referring to Coach Johnson pulling Dontae Aycock’s Scholarship? That is completely different than this situation…He told Aycock if he visited another school he’d pull the offer. Aycock visited another school so Johnson pulled the offer, obviously Aycock didn’t want to come to Georgia Tech. Why is it so hard to talk about sports at Georgia Tech? Is it because we’re better at football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, and however many more sports you can list than UGA is this year???
