UGA-bound Orson Charles already preparing for college career

Tight end Orson Charles of Tampa signed with Georgia on Friday, ending one of UGA’s longest recruiting battles since Herschel Walker signed in April of his senior year.

How did Charles celebrate the end of the long journey? He immediately began preparing for his arrival at Georgia later this summer.

Charles said he spent several hours this weekend pouring over the Georgia playbook with his high school teammate, quarterback Aaron Murray, who also signed with the Bulldogs. Murray enrolled early in college and returned to Tampa for Spring Break.

“I just got back from Aaron’s house,” Charles said on Sunday night. “I’m supposed to be over there the whole week. We’re going over routes. Aaron and I just want to win again. We’re looking over the playbook so we can get on the same page again.”

Charles was asked what he thought of the college playbook. “Oh my gosh. Man, is it complicated? That thing is huge.”

This kid is a hybrid half tight end half wide reciever.UGA will put him at tight end-in the slot-H-back type formations.Great choice in school son.It looks like you and Aaron Murray will continue your championship ways.

Glad to have you on board Orson. It took awhile but I’m sure you’ll be worth the wait.

Jarvis,

That line never gets old does it? Hilarious. I said the same thing to myself, then I saw your comment.

This young man sounds like he’s doing the right things to get ready for the life as a D-1 college football player. Hopefully he and A. Murray will push each other to learn the playbook and get better. I’m looking forward to seeing them connect on the field for years to come.

Welcome to the team, Orson. A lot of people are glad you’re a Dawg now!

Yep Billy Jack I think we’re going to see us stay pro style, add a few more spread elements & go back to the no huddle fast break style. We have the players now be able to run an OU type of no huddle then switch to a passing spread. Then when Logan Gray or Aaron Murray take over at QB in 2010 we’ll add a little more spread option stuff at times.

Let’s not forget Arthur Lynch was ranked 7th out of all of the tight ends nationwide and Charles was 15th. By waiting to announce it added weight to the importance of his signing. Competition is a good thing though. Go DAWGS!!!

AC - I thought Charles was the 2nd or 3rd highest rated tight end this year? I’m pretty sure that ESPN had him as the 63rd overall top prospect which would make it difficult for me to believe that there are 14 other tight ends in the top 62. Either way, it’s all a moot point now until they prove their worth on the field.

To all of you UGA haters: Kiss my a**. We just finished up a top 5 recruiting class, we just ended a down year but still had 9 victories and a bowl win, and in case your still wondering… UGA is stacked at every position for next year. I also predict a UGA win at the “Biggest outdoor cocktail waste of time and money game” this year as well.

Scout has Orson at 3rd and Arthur at 5th nationally. We have some good’uns.

This pertains to all players: We shouldn’t put one player above others in expectations. This applies to all positions, but notably at QB. Because Murray and Charles were teammates and are going over the UGA playbook early we see them teaming up early in their career as Dawgs, but that is patently unfair to Lynch and Mettenberger. Cox and Logan were 4-star QBs when they were recruited and they have had to wait behind Stafford. Let’s watch this thing play out. As one person who hopes the best for them all, I know that the coaches will have a hard time selecting between them all. What if Logan turns out to be the best in the spring and fall? Remember that he hasn’t really been opting to play his position at UGA before and now he will be competing. We have to keep in mind that all of the players are good and if one starts, it doesn’t mean that the others go down in ability. It means that at the moment that player has been judged the starter and that can change according to game plan. I really think it’s possible that all 4 could get on the field this coming year. I hope not because the pundits would tear Richt to pieces. They are bad enough when a coach plays two QBs for the season. Think how it would be if these players all played at an SEC level at the gitgo. Now that would have the coaches and writers in a frenzy! Just reminding that as the practices go along and we have our Spring Game, don’t get too carried away with one player over another. The coaches will decide while we can just enjoy their play.

UgaVII-Good year for the Dawgs coming up. They have begun training early. Have you been doing your exercises or have you just been doing? Snap out of it! You have a season to start early, also. HUP,TWOO,TREE,FOWA-HUP,TWOO,TREE,FOWA!!!

I am extremely pleased with the way Murray has assumed the mantle as a Georgia Bulldog. He is committed heart and soul. Of course we get more press for him than the others because of the Charles saga.

In was psyched to see scout.com having Charles ranked that high as oledawg and geoffdawg pointed out. I was referring to espn.com not even having him in their top 150 and ranked as the 15th best TE in the country and Lynch as the 7th. None of that really matters though. Just off season speculation. Bring on OSU! Go DAWGS!!!

Third downs with Orson,A.J, and Marlon are going to give DB’s nightmares, coaches will be pulling out there hair, and the DAWGS will be winning CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Charles is a hybrid, which reminds me of another previously highly touted hybrid TE/WR on our team. What is the word on Aron White? I know he caught a big TD late (maybe in the bowl game), but I didn’t see him much last year, despite several injuries at that position (seems like every position could be described that way last year). Will White be an intergral part of the offense this year? If so, would that open the playbook in a way that UGA could use in the immediate future (Charles taking over for White when he is done)? Will Charles run into the same early problems (lack of size) that White did? Interesting times ahead…

Actually, I forget that White and Gray were both highly touted out-of-state prospects who played together in high school. White is a hybrid and Gray is an extremely atheletic QB. Murray and Charles are both highly touted out-of-state prospects who played together in high school. Charles is a hybrid and Murray is an extremely atheletic QB.

Cox and Momass were both highly rated players and played at the same high school. Momass played imediatly and Cox had to Red Shirt and wait behind Stafford. I think Cox is ready to take this Bull by the Horns. Everybody’s got to compete for there position and let the best man win. Just see how it shakes out. I think it’s going to be alot of fun! GO DAWGs
