Orson Charles signs with Georgia after lengthy recruiting process

Orson Charles did some shirt-ripping of his own on Friday.

Dressed in a silver suit with pinstripes, Charles took off his sportscoat to reveal the winning season with his No. 7 Georgia Blackout jersey.

Charles signed with the Bulldogs over Tennessee and Southern Cal, ending one of Georgia’s longest recruiting battles since Herschel Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner who signed in April of his senior year.

“The first thing I’d say is that it was long, and I’m happy that it’s over,” Plant High coach Robert Wiener said. “The second thing that I would say is that Orson went about it the right way to make the best decision.”

Charles got a late start on recruiting because he transferred to Plant during his junior year. He focused on his senior season of football, finally turing his full attention toward recruiting after Plant won the Florida’s Class AAAA championship on Dec. 20.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound tight end took his final recruiting trip to Southern Cal on Feb. 20. He signed the scholarship papers with Georgia on Friday night, about a month after signing day.

“We’re thrilled to have Orson join our signing class,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “He comes from a state championship high school team … a team that knows how to win and I’m sure Orson will come in and be ready to compete.”

Charles is recruit No. 20 for Georgia’s 2009 recruiting class. He is the second prospect at tight end, joining Arthur Lynch of Dartmouth, Mass.

Georgia had a lot working in its favor for Charles. The quarterback on Plant’s championship team was Aaron Murray, who signed with Georgia and enrolled early in college. Murray’s recent success with Charles helped the Bulldogs win the recruiting battle.

“It wasn’t the factor, but it definitely was a factor,” Weiner said. “Orson is a guy that catches the ball. He knows that the place he is going (Georgia), the guy there can throw some pretty good passes. There’s definitely a comfort level there, and Aaron has something to do with it.”

Charles said that all three of his finalists had reserved the No. 7 jersey for him.

Good for you pups. Hope he is not a “head case” as typically the kids who stretch things out want the attention and that is not a good thing. At the SEC level, he will probably play more in a H back role or will split wide as he does not have the frame of the typical tight end. Good complement to Brown and Green.

George P. Burdell, you never cease to humor me and the rest of this blog. Tech really kicked the p*ss out of UGA with a huge 3 point win. Winning once every 8 years is really something to be commended for. Congratulations.

By the way I saw where 3 more players decided to jump ship from the Tech football team. I guess pretty soon CPJ will have to start recruiting students to play. Tech is currently the best team in Atlanta but Georgia State hasn’t started playing yet. What in the world will Tech do now not being able to sell their tickets to GSU students.

UT Folks - this CMR is 3 for 3 on 3 big targets that your new boy considered a ‘must have’. I’ll give him credit for getting into the conversation, but at this time, you do not have a leg to stand on. I’d shut up and see how the season shakes out.

Dawg Nation Whiners - All the fretting about losing two or three blue chippers - I hope that you are finally satisfied and understand that you cannot get every player from your own state. Ask Florida, three of theirs are heading to UGA this year.

That’s it for me. Recruiting is over - I’ll see you folks in August.

Enjoy trashing each other over the spring and summer.

Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled with the overall class and getting OC along with Brown, Wooten, Murray, Ealey, Lynch, Burnett, Long & others; however, our defense needed the most help and we didn’t have that great of a defensive recruiting class.

I know Smith was a five star recruit, but we didn’t get to many other “big name” defensive players. Hopefully, the coachs saw somthing in J. Love, S. Williams, & D. Lott that the recruiting services didn’t. I hope our D returns to playing Georgia defense this upcoming year.

I wish all the recruits the best and GO DAWGS.

We are so wild even Smokey is being wild. Coach Pearl and Coach Summitt are topless too. I think Coach Summitt might want to put her top back on. I was thinking about scoring about 70 on Urban’s boys this year, 60 on the Saint and win the NC for icing on the cake. We are gonna run wild. I am telling you running wild and building fences everywhere I go. Only reason Charles chose UGA is because that no good ####### Coach Richt told him he would give him number #7. I have on tape that he cheated. He talked to him 5 seconds past the time he was allowed. I was gonna give Orson his own fence post on that fence we are building. It is really sad that posters on here have to take shots at young men who are making a life decision as to where they will go to school just because it isn’t the “fan’s school”. I am an alumnus of Georgia, but if a kid choses Tech, Florida (ugh), or another school I wish him well. After all it’s not about us, it’s about the young man and his education.

Deep Down in their gut they fear us…. they beelieve they are gonna lose..even shocked when they win. They feel alone at night…. they snuggy their computers in hopes that the other 45 fans they have offers company to them. They crave our responses online or in public for it gives them the attention they lack from not being able to get a woman. If confronted physically by a Dawg fan they feel bigger than they are when others see that they can actually socialize other than their keyboards. They realize that 42-45 was a fluke cause they dont know how to act….especially when they think CPJ IS ACTUALLY a better coach than CMR. Even the best calculator in the world doesnt understand the buttons they try to push. Fluke is what they know ….. 42-45……..

O.K. coaches the recruiting is over. Now to conditioning and training to be champs begins. UGA has a very solid class to add to a very talented team. We needed receivers and we got them. Now the O line needs to improve and it should. CWM needs to step it up this year and get the Defense back in line. With good D line play and O line play this season we should be in the hunt for a SEC championship. It is not guaranteed with the UF coming back pretty strong, but we should compete with them very well. Cox will be better than expected and manage the game well.

Some of you people here are really very sad… and this is coming from a long-time Dawg fan.

It kind of puts it all in perspective when you think about how thin a coach’s job security is when it’s based on the decisions that 17-23 year-old kids make under a football helmet. I take my hat off to any of them that have one grain of sanity left these days.

Orson, I hope you get to Athens and realize just how special it is to wear the red & black and play between the hedges, where so many great ones have blazed the trail before you. I only regret the fact that you’ll never know what it’s like to hear the great Larry Munson call your name during a game broadcast. Finish your education… get your degree no matter what major you may choose, and be proud to be a Dawg and to wear the red & black.

God bless the Dawgs and all of the young men who play this great game of college football, wherever they may be enrolled as STUDENT/athletes… TPH

I am so glad OC chose Georgia. He will be in an environment that is so good for young men seeking God’s way. I understand why Mark Richt goes the extra mile with some players on the wrong track. Remember living a Christian life is ever so much more important than football. God doesn’t favor one team over another. He is seeking people that seek his will and try to follow. I think we all need to recruit for God’s team. He is unchangeable and unstoppable.

Tech lives to beat Georgia and Georgia only. They have never won the ACC or been in a BCS bowl. When was the last 10 win season? 50 years ago? Can’t fill a 45,000 seat stadium unless they play Georgia. We own the series, we own the last 7 of 8 and we owned you the first half until went sleep walking through the 3rd quarter.

You best enjoy your 45 to 42 because payback is gonna be hell. Tech is nothing without Georgia. You just ain’t that important to us cause we kick your a* so often it gets boreing. Hey, a blind hog stumbles on an acorn every once in awhile. You got your acorn last year.

Buzz, check out CPJ’s record and see who he has actually beat using that rinky dink offense. He has a win against a injury riddled UGA team as his best ever win. I don’t think those “student atheletes” at gtu can ever top that win, or even duplicate it again unless we again have 25% of our squad and an even higher percentage of our starters injured. Let’s just call last year what is was and move on, a fluke is a fluke.

Welcome to the Athens O.C., this is awesome. It’s nice to know that people, even young people, still read the good book and follow their heart. Coach Richt is a good man, the man above led you in the right direction. As they say, birds of the same feather flock together. God Bless you and all Georgia faithful. O.C., keep following your heart…pray before every practice and game and great things will happen. Not only for you, but your teammates as well.

Damn it is cold, that must be why my nipples are hard. How many out of this wonderful class will ever see campus? You have to get qualified first. I’m hearing 5-6 may not make it in. That’s a real quality class. Then you have to worry about the number of preseason arrest. Maybe next year will be the theme for ever at uga.

Phoneguy, I don’t know the number of players out for the spring game but CMR said there would be a number of players out still rehabing. I believe Owens and Sturdivant are out as well as several other O-line. I believe CMB said King would get most of the reps at RB during spring as most of the RB’s are also rehabing. Check out the article about Bobo’s teleconference.

Oh wait, it’s former Tech players Reggie Koon and Marvious Hester. And that was right on the heals of the Feds busting Reuben Houston for (drum roll) drug trafficking.

If Georgia players are “thugs” because they get busted for posession of alcohol - what does that make Tech players?

Keep signing those top 10 recruiting classes and losing games in the real season when it counts. I’m confident that the UGA coaching staff will lose several games next year even though they have the talent to lose 1 or 2.

Just because I am intellectually superior to you has nothing to do with it. The fact is that our football coaches and players out smarted yours (surprise-lol) last year in your yard 45-42. And since you guys will likely take about 5 years to figure out what we are doing (on the football field-you will NEVER figure out what we are doing in the classroom), you might want to get over it and used to it. I see more 45-42’s coming and hope I enjoy them as much as I have this past one!

Why all the excitement UGA has always had good recruiting classes going back to the days before CMR. and by the way CLEMSON also has had top recruiting classes and failed to get the job done. so my question is what is different this time .I think Texas AM as well has had top recruiting classes the past few years so I just find it hard to see anything different coming from UGA. But I find it more puzzling is to why theses kids would bypass USC,FSU,Miami,UF, and come to UGA. there is better competition elite programs that will only continue to get better with time . the way I see it UF,LSU,GT,USC,UT ,Al, will be the teams to beat in the days ahead. UGA is just one of those teams that will always be competitive but they will never reach the pinnacle if they have not won a National title by now chances are the window of opportunity has passed them by. Has GA ever been that good when UT and UF are on the top of their games at the same time I don’t think so.

If he hasn’t already done it, look for Lane Kiffin to make some kind of wise-crack about his needing to get more God-like and try some prayer in his recruiting efforts. Here’s two, at least, whose momma had a strong influence over who saw Kiffin for the smartass punk that he is and Mark Richt for his true beliefs.

As for the Techies that have found their way over here, the only way ‘all’ tech’s football players pass ‘cal-class’ (I did pass it, by the way, in high school) was if they’re given all the homework and the answers to all the tests (of course they would have to have the questions along with them or otherwise they might get ‘em out of order.). The sheer vileness anger and jealousy from Yechies makes my cheeks hurt from smiling so much!!! LOL!!!!

Yet another HIGH CHARACTER, WELL ROUNDED, STUDENT ATHLETE coming to Athens!!!! While Yech is stuck with kids that didn’t get offers from the SEC schools of their dreams or were too afraid of competition.

LOL!!!! What a beautiful day!!!!!

Seems like we have some “latent” GT fans on board.

Buzz speaks of “d* lickers”, while George “Prick” Burdell talks of “UGAys” and poll smoking. Kindred spirits, I’ll do the introduction:

Buzz, George “Prick” Burdell…..Prick, Buzz.

Wow! Georgia fans bragging about beating an ACC team. How funny.

These are the Leg Humpers that have lost 17 of the last 20 against Florida. Mark Richt is 2-8 against Florida and was 1-2 against Ron Zook.

The Leg Humpers can get all the top recruits they want and it will not matter as long as Mark Richt is there. The guy has NO EMOTION. NO FIRE.

Spurrier, the Florida coach on Georgia’s recruiting after a 45-13 win in 1991 over the Bulldogs: “Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players, but when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don’t understand that. What happens to them?”

By George P. Burdell

Who says we are World beaters?….not I…I live in the NOW…and in the NOW..CPJ is superior to Rev. Richt…The failed recruiting classes just proves my point….I am forever troubled by the lack of eloquence in the Humpers posts….It is obvious that I am far too superior intellectually to even discuss the current UGAys situation of underachievement. The UGAys have opined pointless drivel and I wish someone would step up and give me something….anything…that is acceptable jargon…Please carry on…

Eric, no doubt UF has dominated us the past two decades. I’m hoping the pendulum will swing back in our favor, but that’s a toss up at best because Meyer has UF firing on all cylinders.

I don’t believe Richt is 2-8 against UF. He’s been head coach since 2001, so I believe his record is 2-6. Not much better, but I hope we don’t lose two more to make the 2-8 claim accurate.

Anyway, I don’t like Meyer’s style, but he sure has the program in top shape. Congrats on the latest NC. Maybe we’ll get one in the next few years.

Regarding Spurrier, great coach, but classless. His comment, however, was accurate. It was made during the Goff (or Goof) regime. I wondered the same thing many times.

Unbelievable, The Dawgs are sitting pretty good right now…Charles is the real deal. I live in Tampa and what he and Aaron Murray(QB) did here for Plant High School was ridiculous…that combo of Charles and Murray is unstoppable. Oh, and by the way, during his official visit to the Gators he dropped the 2006 BCS National Champion Trophy. LOL He sent a message to the gators.

But don’t worry Dawg Nation this guy won’t be dropping the ball on Saturdays…mark my word. His hands are the size of an catchers mitt.

This was Richt’s best recruiting class. The Dawgs could have easily had a medicore recruiting class due to negative perceptions after a year many thought of as dissapointing. Instead, they put together a class that’s great on paper, fills needs and includes big time players from both in state and out of state in the backyards of other big time programs. Now hopefully the Dawgs can get all the guys they signed into school and develop them so they are as good on the field as they are on paper.

So a team only develops it’s talent when they win a national championship? So it took Dooley 16 years to develop his talent? It took Bowden 20 years at FSU to develop his talent? That’s just dumb. Richt’s career compares very favorably at this point to the best coaches in college football. The Dawgs have finshed top 3 twice and won 2 SEC Championships under Richt. The scary thing for UGA opponents is that he’s getting better and better at recruiting. Recruits like Richt as a person, like the stability of the program, like the chance to play in big games and like the track record of UGA players in the NFL.

Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin held a press conference to say Marlon Brown’s grandmother blocked Orson Charles from signing with Tennessee. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson held a press conference to say he “pulled” his offer to Orson Charles. Georgia coach Mark Richt called a press conference to thank God for answering his prayers to make Orson Charles sign with Georgia.

George P. Burdell, You need to really shut your trap. Don’t make up numbers regarding nfl players. Seriously if you are going to talk smack don’t lie about stuff and actually come to the table with something.

Bobby, You are a piece of trash. The AJC needs to keep an eye on the blogs. Fans like bobby shouldn’t be allowed to blog or at least his trash should be removed.

Orson chose a great school and he will help out uga right away. He ends one of the most impressive recruiting classes at Georgia for Mark Richt.
