Orson Charles to choose between UGA, Tennessee and Southern Cal
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Georgia could add one more member to its 2009 recruiting class on Friday. That’s when tight end Orson Charles of Tampa will announce between the Bulldogs, Tennessee and Southern Cal.
Georgia is a top contender for Charles, who is one of the nation’s top unsigned seniors. UGA coach Mark Richt had a lengthy phone conversation with Charles on Tuesday night, according to TotalUGA.com.
“He just wanted to make sure I didn’t have any questions on how I was going to be used and what positions I’d be playing,” Charles told TotalUGA . “We talked about the history of the tight ends under him and all the players he’s put into the [NFL].”
What are Georgia’s chances for Charles? His teammate at Plant High, quarterback Aaron Murray, signed with UGA and enrolled early in college. Charles has also said the Bulldogs are reserving the No. 7 jersey, which was worn previously by Matthew Stafford.

Orson, I heard you read everything on the internet. If you’re reading this, choose the Dawgs! If not Georgia, then SoCal. ANywhere but Tennessee unless you like coaches that falsely accuse the national champions of cheating and run around bare chested flexing like the Hulk.

Mr Charles? That kind of reminds me of seeing a judge or an attorney refer to a convicted criminal as “Mr.” It just sounds silly for you guys to come on here pleading for a kid to come to a certain school. I would bet his decision has been made a while ago, other wise what is he going to do on Fridat, wake up and decide that moment?

Hey baseballvol… If things keep up the way they have been, you may have to change your statement to: “Come to tennessee where you will will 2 games every year…as long as wyoming is not on the schedule!”

Be interesting to see what he does. USC will promise whatever it takes (early playing time promises are almost a given there) . Who knows what the new UT coaches will come up with. Richt will be perfectly straight arrow with the kid maybe even to a fault.

I agree. Richt is the best. He has this certain aire about him. Some call it moxie. We will never have to worry about him bending the rules or not being 100% truthful with a recruit.

I’m not sure if Charles can come in and compete at UGA for the starting tight end position. He seems undersized to play there, and a may not be quick enough to play on the edge. I know he’s a good athlete, but I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Traditionally the TE that plays for Coach Richt is a lot bigger and stronger. This kid’s playing it for all it’s worth, and probably loving every minute of it.
Good luck, Orson. Hope everything works out for you. I just hope you don’t expect everyone to cater to you when you get on campus, whatever campus that may be. It would probably be a good idea to adopt a “I’m gonna work harder than everybody else” attitude and let your actions speak for themselves.

HamDawg, the fuss is because the kid would cause all kinds of problems for any defense with the WRs that UGA has. His speed and size along with his athletic ability make him unique. For sure they all have to work hard at any major program. I understand that he is a pretty serious kid and is just being maybe (in the eyes of some) overly careful in his process.

SEC fan,
I just don’t think he’ll be a good fit at UGA. Not just his size, skills, etc, but the overall package that he brings. UGA doesn’t need a primadonna walking on campus as a freshman. UGA needs more kids like A.J., Knowshon, Ben Jones…kids that put the program first and work hard to make the TEAM better. I’m just not sure he’s gonna do that. Maybe he’s a better fit at USC.
Just my opinion.

BaseballVol13 is not doing Tennessee any favors, is he? Why would Orson Charles or any other recruit look at those comments and decide, “Wow, that’s the fan base I want!”?
Dawgstephen is right. It’s getting harder and harder to wade through absolute garbage in search of a little intelligent and interesting opinion.

UGAs offense is a lot like the Colts O and Orson is comparable to a Dallas Clark type of TE. He will split out in the slot some and cause mismatches. He fits at UGA. And by the way, Knowshon was a bit of a prima donna himself.

Wow I guess after the AJC does a few stories about this kid some of you feel like you know him. Thats pretty sad…..
Orson, do whats best for you. I grew up in Athens and live on the west coast now….there are few college towns as fun as Athens….there are few coaches that have the level of integrity of Mark Richt. USC is a great school and southern Cal is beautiful, but, going to school in south central LA is a 180 degree turn from what Athens offers. It would be a lot of fun for you as well, but a completely different college experience. UT is a good football tradition but I honestly dont see what they currently have to offer thats better then UGA (maybe you do). The truth is, you have some excellent choices in front of you. Hopefully you stay close to home and go to UGA….but I wouldnt blame you for heading west. Unless you just really liked the coaches at UT, forget about them.
Good luck!

TheItalianDawg,
For your information, I’m a Dawg fan, have been all of my life. It’s just my opinion that UGA would be just fine without this kid. Coach Richt isn’t going to beg this kid to come to Athens, as he shouldn’t. Charles needs to make his mind up and stick with his decision. If he comes to Georgia, I’ll be glad he’s coming. If he goes somewhere else, fine as well. He’s just not doing himself any favors by waiting so late to commit.
Does putting “Italian” in your name make you Italian, or are you a Frenchman in disguise?
JK, just having a little fun!

This kid is much needed at UGA. He will be the next Ben Watson. Don’t worry about his size just yet. Remember he is 17 years old. Besided 230 lbs isn’t too small. He will be a mismatch for linebackers (speed) and a mismatch for DBs (size). That is why we want him at UGA. In an interview that took place after his trip to USC. They asked him how he felt about his trip to USC and he said that it went great. He then said that even though his trip went great he was still leaning toward the Bulldogs. He said it was what his gut was telling him. I hope this article is right but who knows? I guess we will find out on friday.

Orson, you have three very good schools in your final three. At UGA you know Mark will be up front with you on everything. You have a coaching staff that had been offered many opportunities to go other places for more money. This tells you something about UGA, Athens and especially Mark Richt! You have good QB’s that will get you the ball and with you, AJ and Marlon there will be know way anyone can double you guys.We wish you the best but from everything we have read about you Mark is the coach you should play for. You have a chance to be the best T.E. to come out of UGA. You also have a QB you are familiar with and can get you the ball.

If this kid wasn’t a complete Stud he wouldn’t have USC chomping at the bit to get him. I am sure he understands the SEC is the best conference to play in and I am sure he knows that the SEC fans care just a little more than the rest. I would imagine that he wants to win and win early so Tenn is out of the picture. Welcome to the Dog Nation Orson Charles, I am anxious to see you prove worth.

What is it with you Georgia fans? Here recently in the past 5 or so years, ya’ll are always preseason hyped to be dominate and always have good recruiting classes. I am not a an SEC guru, being that i am a Oklahoma fan, but it seems to me that UGA is the closest to Florida(Tennessee will be up there soon due to their staff IMO) talent wise and yet UGA still can’t seem to ever put it together for a season. I don’t know if its the staff or what but I personally don’t see why a prospect would want to go to GA and be a part of an SEC team that never exceeds or even lives up to talent expectations. Just some food for thought.

I’m a TN grad that has lived in GA for a long time and next to TN, I pull for GA. Not to alarm GA fans but I think Richt has a lot of the same coaching weaknesses that Fulmer had. Clearly Richt is a fantastic recruiter but as Fulmer often did, he plays not to lose instead of playing to win. GA lets way too many inferior teams stay in game way too long. In Fulmer’s last 10 years, he consistently lost to SEC teams with inferior talent. However, we actually beat GA when they clearly had better talent. I honestly felt GA was the only top tier SEC team that coached with same outdated philosophy that Fulmer coached with. Against FL, Richt coaches like Fulmer did against them. Bottome line, I think GA fans are right in questioning the losses in big games. It is a trend that can get out of hand, just as it did in Knoxville.

I’m sorry, but who does this kid think he is? Didn’t someone tell him signing day was Feb 4th? It’s ridiculous for this jerk to think he’s so good or so important that everyone should wait around for him to decide. He’s just a TE anyway. What a self important jerk. Oh well, he’ll fit in great at UGA, Tenn or USC.

Here’s a thought that I’m sure most of you would consider, but would not admit. Now I’m not a die-hard Fulmer lover or hater. It’s well know that Fulmer’s effectiveness was retired a long time ago, but he was always a class act and represented UT well. Lets assume for a minute that Scott is correct about the nobel intentions of Richt, and those comparisions with Fulmer are right on. Additionally, look at what absurd tatics the UT/USC staff are doing to attract these athletes. Then look at how these athletes are acting like pre-madonnas or thugs (getting crunked). If this is what football is coming to, which I think it is, I think the game will pass me by too. Maybe I should retire my SEC fan status. Not gonna happen, I’m just bummed about what I have to look foward to.

Orson Charles is the subject of this blog because we want to hear news of his decision-making process. Several of you are correct in defending him from the same kinship with Bryce Brown. Orson did start the recruiting process late and waited until after the championship game in order to stay focused on accomplishing his objective- winning the Florida state high school championship. We want this guy for more than his athletic ability. We want his dedication to excellence. We want his careful unhurried decision of a person who is not full of himself. His high school qb called UGA’s attention to him and he could end up throwing to him again. What if he and White were on opposite ends of the line? That’ll make you salivate. Cox hit White in the FU game for our only td. What could he do with two of them in tandem with our receivers? A great deal of damage. This kid would be like icing on a beautiful Red and Black cake this year. He could one day be a Dawg leader because he is talented and dedicated to his sport. Let’s hope he decides in our favor, but there would still be that glint of respect for him no matter where he choses. He has gotten incorrect and incomplete info about the Dawgs and has called each time to verify the truth with Richt. This is not some kid playing the “Look at me” media game, rather he seems to be the Dawg’s “Right Stuff”.

Well Charles I’m sorry you didn’t take a harder look at the Gators because I think you are a talent and could have fit very well as a reciever/tight end in Fla’s system. But with that being said, I do think Georgia would be your best choice out of whats left. Of course Mike Williams out of your same HS in Tampa was successful out at USC but there is nothing like playing in the SEC unless…you choose Tenn then you might as well go play in the WAC.

Orson, if you come to GA, you’ll get a lot dump passes coming your way.. the waggle, the snag etc.. especially most teams will play the cover 2 deep zone to prevent AJ, Marlon, Tavarris, Durham from beating them deep. So, lots of underneath stuff coming your way. Get ready to snag a lot of quick passes.

It is a little bit disconcerting to read some of these postings. I would implore many of you to use a dictionary during your posts to make sure that you are spelling words correctly.
The classic one has to be by bishopdawg using ‘pre-madonna’. Is that the era between Herschel and LiKe a Virgin??? Hey Bishop, the word is prima donna.
As an educated UGA fan, it embarrassing to see the shoddy postings made by my fellow fans. Step up and show some intelligence.
Tech Fans - you hold onto that one win in the last seven years just like we hold onto our wins vs. Florida. Even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and again.
Tennessee Fans - some intelligent comments posted relating Fulmer to Richt. I’ve wondered the same thing about the intensity. You Kiffin juice drinkers are in for a rude awakening over the next 48 months.
Oh yeah, this is a blog about a 17 year old kid making a life changing decision, and he should feel rushed to do it by 02/04/09??? More of the kids should be doing what he has done and take the time to make as certain as possible that he is making the best decision for himself.
Whatever decision you make Orson, good luck!!!!
