Northview DT Denzel McCoy approaching 30 scholarship offers

According to his coach, Northview defensive tackle Denzel McCoy has all the tools needed to be a major-college football player.

Size, quickness and the ability to dominate games - the 6-foot-4, 270-pound junior used those to make 72 tackles and six sacks last season.

Northview coach Jim Showfety, who may use McCoy on both sides of the line next season, says the star recruit with nearly 30 scholarship offers can be even better.

“Personally, I think Denzel still has plenty of room for improvement on the field,” Showfety said in an email Thursday. “I want to see him become a dominant player this season. I have challenged him to take his performance a step further and I am hoping he is up to the challenge.”

McCoy’s offers stretches from coast to coast, including LSU, Georgia Tech, USC, Notre Dame, Florida State, Oregon, Penn State (the first to offer last summer), Alabama, Stanford, West Virginia, Miami, Cal and South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn and Tennessee.

Tech’s offer has been on the table for quite some time, Showfety said.

“First of all, they [Tech] know he can cut it academically,” the coach said. “Secondly, he runs well and takes good pursuit angles downfield.

According to recent Web reports, McCoy has made visits to several Southern campuses, like Georgia, Tech and Clemson.

McCoy…we’d love to have you on the Flats in Atlanta! Can already read the headline…

Tech proves they have the real “McCoy”.

Denzel has always been a big kid and a nice kid too. He has good parents who have made it a point to keep him in line and associate with the right kind of people. Dad is a H.S. football coach and is very knowledgeable about the game and recruiting.

However, even though I didn’t see him play last year, for all his tools, he was never particularly physically coordinated or very fast. But if you were within arms length of him, he would win, because of his size and strength.

I am quite surprised at so many DI offers. I would agree with what his coach said above. He has plenty of room for improvement on the field. He’s been that way since he was 10 years old, you always expected more than what you got.

I have been told (by high school recruiting coordinators) that major DI colleges are now recruiting mainly what they feel fits a physical profile. In this case, that seems to be correct. Reminds me of Oregon taking Justin Roper a few years ago, because he was a 6’5” QB on a state playoff team- not very impressive when you see him play, in high school or in college, immobile and looks uncomfortable in his body, much like Denzel.

That said, I am very happy for Denzel. I think having all these offers on the table is a dream come true. Best of luck to him. If a coach ever gets that potential out of him, he will be a beast!

Film doesn’t lie and every school that has offered this you man and recruiting service has send numerous films on him.Lets all remember that these are kids that you are talking about and you must really have a lot of time on your hands. You must be a real expert in the world of recruiting and developing football players. The last time I check kids develop over the years and colleges spend a lot of time looking at a kid not just personally but athletically. I don’t believe that you have been present at all of the DI camps that this young man has attended and all the countless hours he has spent in the weightroom and participating in speed and agility sessions. Only a real man who would wish and expect the best for today’s youth. This young man not only was the only junior on the all region team but the only junior on the all Fulton County team. You must be a Brookwood loyalist. You probably haven’t been involved with him since he’s been in high school.

I can’t believe that our local paper or yet alone any paper would allow the last comment to be publicized. If the individual above was clearly happy for this young man he would not have made the comments that he made.

I like denzel. Good kid, but afraid to compete at camps and that is a problem. He went to a number of camps last year and would not compete. He needs to be told when you go to camp you need to compete. Frankly from his video and his play it’s surprising he has that many offers already and his fear of competing at camps doesn’t sit well with coaches. Denzel if you get invited to any camps this year how about show coaches you want to compete instead of just showing up.

In response to Mr. Recruitnik, the only camp that Denzel did not participate in was the Georgia camp due to an injury suffered in preparation for the upcoming 2008 season. Competing at a camps was exactly how he was offered by Alabama and several of the other schools he’s been offered by. So make sure you have your facts straight before you offer any suggestions. On the other hand the EYE IN THE SKY doesn’t lie. This is called film.

In response to Supporter and Recruitnik or however you spell it, I am not sure if the two of you have seen this kid perform, but he was facing my son in one on one’s at the alabama camp…. He looked worth of every offer he has received. My son was a Alabama commit and he showed him up, now i know he is my son and thats wrong to say but it is the truth. Best of luck to you McCoy

lemme tell u, i go to school with Denzel and he is worth every offer. yea colleges recruit based on film and stats, but also on personality. im on the Varsity Team with Denzel and he has his head on straight, he doesnt let his 30+ D1 offers fill his head up like it might to others. hes been a role model to me, as i play D Tackle, and hes offered to help me and others on the team. dont doubt that he isnt deserving of the offers, because he is such a great person, and a physically gifted athlete. Denzel, best of luck.
