Georgia Tech may add two more basketball recruits to heralded class

Georgia Tech’s basketball recruiting class — four signees plus commitment Derrick Favors — ranks No. 4 nationally, according to Scout.com. But Tech is not done.

The Yellow Jackets hope to add one, and perhaps two, players in the signing period that starts April 15.

Their primary target is Brian Okam, a 6-feet-11, 245-pound center at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando. He took an official visit to Tech two weeks ago.

Okam transferred to Lake Highland from Montrose Christian in Rockville, Md., the school that sent Marvin Lewis to Tech in 2000. Okam is ineligible this season, but he’s getting instruction from former NBA forward Jeff Turner, Lake Highland’s coach.

Tech would have a second scholarship available if wing D’Andre Bell is not cleared to play. Bell underwent surgery in December to repair a spinal condition.

“Right now it looks like D’Andre will be back, but we won’t have final word on that for another two months,” coach Paul Hewitt said. “We need a big guy, and if D’Andre doesn’t come back, a wing who can attack the basket off the dribble.”

Tech has signed two four-star recruits, 6-1 point guard Mfon Udofia (Miller Grove) and 6-8 forward Kammeon Holsey (Hancock Central); and two three-star recruits, 6-4 wing Glen Rice (Walton) and 6-6 forward Brian Oliver (William Penn in New Castle, Del.).

Favors, a 6-9 center from South Atlanta, is Scout’s No. 1 player in the nation. He said he’ll sign in April.

“As good as our class is, we’re looking to see if there’s one more piece we can add to it to make it a great group,” Hewitt said.

Okam is the only big man Tech is targeting. As for wings, “there’s a wide range of kids we’re surveying and checking out, from high-rated guys to guys who are under the radar,” Hewitt said.

“But they all have one thing in common. They’ve got to get to the foul line, because that’s one of the things that’s been a difference in our close games this year.”

Of the signees, Hewitt said Rice has a chance to be the slasher Tech needs.

SW DeKalb DB leaning toward Tennessee after the Vols first to offer

One of the area’s most touted juniors, Southwest DeKalb’s Jonathon Mincy is anticipating offers from Georgia and Georgia Tech.

“They are still evaluating my tape,” he said.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound track star currently has offers from Tennessee and Ole Miss. He attended Junior Day at UGA, Tech and Clemson.

Mincy said he was a UGA fan growing up, but he said Tennessee is currently his top choice. “They were the first school to offer,” he said. “They really want me to come up there and compete. But I still have a high interest in UGA and Tech because I want to stay close to home. ”

Mincy said he was supposed to go to Knoxville for Junior Day this weekend, but he has a track meet. He thinks Tech will be the next to offer. “I have gotten a lot of feedback from Tech,” he said. “They seem to really like my tape.”

QB Nick Montana, son of NFL Hall of Famer, considering Georgia

Nick Montana, son of former NFL QB Joe Montana, said he’s not going to wait around for Tennessee’s offer, according to the Knoxville News.

“I’m going to visit a couple of other schools and if I feel one’s the best fit, I’m done,” Montana told the News.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound quarterback from Westlake Village, Calif., said he has offers from Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, Alabama, Stanford, Maryland, Arizona, Nebraska and Ohio State. He’s waiting to hear back from several schools, including Tennessee and Southern Cal. The 2010 prospect hinted at making his college decision within the next two months.

Montana’s quarterbacks coach in high school is former Tennessee starter Casey Clausen. Montana has already made an unofficial trip to Tennessee to speak with coach Lane Kiffin. “… It’s in the SEC. The fan base is ridiculous. It was a good experience.”

Northview DT Denzel McCoy approaching 30 scholarship offers

According to his coach, Northview defensive tackle Denzel McCoy has all the tools needed to be a major-college football player.

Size, quickness and the ability to dominate games - the 6-foot-4, 270-pound junior used those to make 72 tackles and six sacks last season.

Northview coach Jim Showfety, who may use McCoy on both sides of the line next season, says the star recruit with nearly 30 scholarship offers can be even better.

“Personally, I think Denzel still has plenty of room for improvement on the field,” Showfety said in an email Thursday. “I want to see him become a dominant player this season. I have challenged him to take his performance a step further and I am hoping he is up to the challenge.”

McCoy’s offers stretches from coast to coast, including LSU, Georgia Tech, USC, Notre Dame, Florida State, Oregon, Penn State (the first to offer last summer), Alabama, Stanford, West Virginia, Miami, Cal and South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn and Tennessee.

Tech’s offer has been on the table for quite some time, Showfety said.

“First of all, they [Tech] know he can cut it academically,” the coach said. “Secondly, he runs well and takes good pursuit angles downfield.

According to recent Web reports, McCoy has made visits to several Southern campuses, like Georgia, Tech and Clemson.
