Father of Gainesville’s Tai-Ler Jones OK with Georgia’s recruiting philosophy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia’s perceived slow interest in Gainesville High’s Tai-Ler Jones, one of the state’s top wide receiver prospects for 2010, had his father a little perplexed, but Andre Jones said he’s fine with the program’s stance on recruiting.
The elder Jones, a member of Notre Dame’s 1988 national championship team, said that even though his son hadn’t heard from Georgia coaches until the past week, he won’t second-guess their actions. Tai-Ler Jones has nearly 30 offers, including several from top-flight programs.
Although restricted by NCAA rules to speak on specific prospects, Georgia coach Mark Richt recently said his program sometimes makes offers a little slower than other schools to make sure it will be a solid offer.
“I definitely understand their position,” the elder Jones said.
Andre Jones said the Bulldogs have reached out to Tai-Ler [pronounced TY-ler] indirectly through his coaches and have invited the receiver to a Junior Day on March 21. “It sounds like it will be a promising day,” he said, although he’s not sure it will result in an offer.
Recently, Tai-Ler Jones said he wasn’t bothered that Georgia hadn’t contacted him, but admitted he wasn’t sure why not.
Jones, a 6-foot, 178-pound junior with 4.45 speed, has offers from Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee, Clemson, UCLA, Miami, Cal, Vandy and South Carolina, among others.
Andre Jones said it will be his son’s decision, but he wouldn’t mind him selecting Notre Dame. “Notre Dame is at the top of my board, but there are four or five others I’m impressed with,” said Andre Jones, adding he knows Tai-Ler also will consider the value of a college degree in his final decision.

Everyone has their own way of doing things. In the case of UGA it may be somewhat slower, but it works to much success. Think integrity. If a young man is offered, he will know how many spots at that position will be recruited, and it will then be up to him to decide whether to commit or wait. Of course every recruit wants as many offers as possible, and that is understandable. Criticism of CMR’s method is from those who don’t understand or from those who look for any excuse to criticize.

CMR is not offering recruits slower. He is offering Tai-ler slower. UGA currently has 30-35 scholarship offers out for the 2010 recruiting class. That number includes 4 Wr’s. He is slow playing Tai-ler as a back-up. CMR knows he only wants 1 or 2 Wr’s and he doesn’t want Tai-ler to committ early and take one of those offers from one of the other guys he was in a hurry to offer.
I really don’t understand why the AJC wants to perpetuate this myth that CMR is somehow doing something different than everyone else. He is offering the recruits he wants first and not offering the ones he doesn’t want. I am sure he wants to keep Tai-ler interested incase he doesn’t get some of his A-list players he has already offered.
Just for reference since the AJC had the poll up about which method was better CMR’s “wait and see” or CPJ’s “go get them”. UGA currently has 30-35 offers out for 2010 and 4-5 for 2011. GT has 26 out for 2010 and 1 for 2011. So, who exactly is “go get them” and which one is “wait and see.”

Im beginning to wonder are these offers for his grades? or skills? grades are good from what everyone says, but i can think of 4 or 5 recievers in the state better than him and like i said before if he goes to GA, he wont play. Good student from what they say, but from the highlights ive watched, theres nothin special and they say he’s not even the best player on his own team. but we do need his gpa. we need to go get some studs not average athletes, we need some STUDS! Evidently the dawgs know that so get off our case, we know what were doing. we have heard enough about who’s son he is but it dont mean he can play. i never heard of the kid until this year. someones tryna pull a fast one on somebody and thats all im goin say about it. he dont fit the dawgs!!!

mts315. please shut up. shut up. take it from someone in the building that you could not be more wrong. tailer jones is one of georgia’s top wr targets for 2010 because of his athleticism and A+ character/grades. if you had any common sense, you could look at his film and know he’s on the A list. you don’t speak for georgia. coach richt wants to get tailer and his parents on campus and offer him in person like a man, unlike many of these outside schools that mail them in. everything will be fine on march 21. in the meantime, shut up.

MTS315, who are you? Paul Johnson’s secretary? How do you “know” Georgia Tech has 26 offers out for 2010s? 26? Are you sure it’s not 25 or 52? How about listing them all since you know so much?

Hey mts315, I think the AJC does a great job with recruiting. If you don’t like it, go to one of those pay sites and whine there. All you do is b*tch and complain about everything. Go hang out at UGA sports. Yal keep up the great work AJC. It’s the first thing I read every day.

UGA Sports? Are you kidding me!!!! They reported that Mark Richt confirmed Kwame had UGA offer, but Kwame signs with UGA. Wth??? Go figure. In the War Room they report that Orson Charles will cut his schools to 2, and they are wrong again. They don’t get anything right since Chad left.

Georgia didn’t really start talking to this guy until last week? Unreal. He’s in your freakin backyard. Even if you aren’t sure you’re going to offer the kid, you gotta talk to him. Come on man, 30 offers??? Does anyone know which Georgia assistant is assigned this territory?

pacman - two words “over rated”. Moved to another school before last fall as a Jr. to boost playing time and jump start recruiting marketing campaign. Had he stayed were he was at he would have been the 3rd or 4th go to guy. He has benefited greatly by a hyped up smoke and mirrors marketing campaign and a Dad with top playing credentials and connections. Great kid but there are tougher, bigger and better WR’s out there.
