Gainesville coach supports recruiting approach of UGA’s Mark Richt
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Gainesville has two juniors, wide receiver Tai-Ler Jones and quarterback Blake Sims, with around 40 scholarship offers between them.
However, neither player has been offered by Georgia, which has some local Bulldog fans confused. But Gainesville coach Bruce Miller said he and his prospects are just fine with how UGA is handling the recruiting process.
“This is just my impression; [Mark Richt] is such a good person, and he doesn’t want to throw any offers out there and have to take them back, like some other schools do,” Miller said. “He’s such a man of character, and he doesn’t want to do anything like that.”
At least four Georgia assistants have called Gainesville in recent days. Neither Jones nor Sims have been offered by the Bulldogs, but both were invited to Athens on March 21. “After they go over there in March, I wouldn’t be surprised if both players came home with an offer. We’ll see what happens, though.”
Jones is one the nation’s leaders in early offers with nearly 30, including Georgia Tech. He may also be state’s leader in offers without one from UGA.
If Georgia does eventually offer Jones, will it hurt the Bulldogs chances against other schools that offered earlier? “I don’t think so,” Miller said. “If Tai-Ler goes over there in March and Georgia really knocks his socks off, then I think all that other stuff will be forgotten by everybody.”
NCAA rules prevent Richt from commenting on prospective student-athletes. However, Richt did say earlier this month that “at times, we probably offer a little bit slower, in some cases, than other schools” because once Georgia offers a prospect and that particular player commits, then the Bulldogs will stand by it.

I find it funny how Richt sais he doesn’t take offers back…when clearly that is PJ’s approach, considering Richt sais that he will offer 4 wide recievers and then whoever takes it first gets the scholarship and the other three are screwed….but hey what do I know…

mj - you conveniently left out the fact that CMR lets recruits know up front the number of players they’re recruiting for any particular position and that once the quota is reached, they’re done. The knowledge and the power to act on their own behalf is all within the control of the prospective recruit.

Minnesota Jacket, there’s a huge difference between CMR and CPJ. If you read the recent article where CMR discussed his approach to recruiting you would know he said that while he may offer 4 scholarships for a particular position, he clearly states how many they will accept at that position and the first to commit are the ones who will be accepted. If a car dealer told you he was offering a $5000 discount to the first 4 people who purchased a car, did he take the offer back if you’re buyer #6?

what he said was once he offers and they accept he doesnt back off his commitment. You cant hold a spot for every plyer you offer…you hold a spot for the ones you offer and are accepted. Duh.

Tech fans should concentrate on filling up their small stadium instead of commenting on EVERY article related to Georgia recruiting.
Comment on Paul Johnson not CMR. Comment on your Thursday night game, not on UGA. Comment on your bowl game, not UGA. Comment on why on your always available tickets, not UGA.

i agree with it too. if CMR offers early then these kids might get to UGA’s campus and realize that its not the place for them then u have to take that scholarship offer back.

Hey MJ, how do u Tech fans feel about CPJ’s policy of pulling offers to kids who visit other schools? I like CMR’s policy….a promise is a promise, in the end I think it makes the kid’s coaches respect UGA all the more.

When the young man from Plant City Fl,was injured during his senior high school season, there was a chance he would never play another down of football. It was a defining moment for me to understand Coach Richt’s character. He told the young man the scholarship was his and no one else! His word is his bond. This is not about Coach Johnson, I don’t know much about Coach Johnson, but time will tell. I think he’s a pretty good coach, though.

jawaan, if you are counting on the campus and athletic facilities to sell a kid on gt, I don’t see how you ever get anyone to come to that dump by the interstate. I guess it is so close to the interstate so people can just get the heck out of there once they have visited.

BravoDawg44:
That kid in Fl was Shaun Chappas. Reports at the time quoted Chappas as saying that while the other coaches still trying to recruit him disappeared, Richt told him after the injury that his scholarship was safe, even if he was unable to ever play again.
Like you, that episode has stayed with me as a defining truth in the way Richt is doing things at UGA. It was reinforced by the comments Gardner made after turning down the UT offer earlier this year.
And, finally, I also believe that PJ is an outstanding coach, in all aspects. GT is going to win alot of games in the next few years.

I fail to understand the reasoning of CMR in relation to an offer to Tai-ler. He doesn’t want to offer because once he does he doesn’t want to pull the offer. However, he has offered 4-5 Wr for 2010. He is not going to take 5 Wr’s. I don’t see how offering Tai-ler is any different than offering the other Wr’s and telling him that UGA is only going to take one or two. He is not giving Tai-ler the opportunity to commit even if he wanted to.
This obviously says to me that CMR is not waiting to offer because he wants to do right by Tai-ler. It appears that Tai-ler is behind the others on the UGA recruiting board and CMR just doesn’t want to say that.
As to the poster who said a “a promise is a promise,” I think CPJ would agree with you there. When a recruit committs the recruit promises to be done with recruiting and CPJ promises that he will have a spot on the team if the recruit lives up to that promise.

mts315, CMR cannot comment on his reasoning.
Whatever he is doing, he is doing right based on the way all of this year’s commitments helf firm and signed.

I am not disagreeing at all Bob. I think CMR is doing what he thinks is best for UGA. Tai-ler is not high on their board so he does not have an offer. Lets call it like it is. CMR not offering Tai-ler Jones has nothing to do with CMR’s character it has everything to do with CMR doesn’t feel Tai-ler will help UGA as much as the others they have offered. It is not about breaking promises, being honest or pulling offers. It is about business.
Carvell was just trying to make a false point that CMR has a different approach to recruiting. CMR takes the same approach as everyone else when handing out offers, he gives them to who he thinks can help the team win.
My problem is with Carvell not with CMR.

That kid Bravodawg44 is referring to was not Shaun Chapas. While Chapas may have had similar issues, he attended Bolles school, not Plant High. He is referring to Aaron Murray, Plant City’s quarterback who suffered what at the time was thought to be possibly a career ending injury. Luckily for Murray, no nerves were damaged and his career moves on with his incredible story of not only healing, but returning to the team to play the semi final and championship games for his team.

I am a UGA alumni, and I was at UGA during the time of Coach Dooley, who was, and is, one of the most beloved coaches in the country. Coach Dooley never had any issues with the NCAA, nor were there ever any issues regarding his character. What CMR has brought to the table is an even higher moral standard, if possible, than Coach Dooley had. I read an article just the other day, and that article was related to CMR having the "killer instinct" to win a NC. Please do not be fooled by CMR's demeanor. He can, and will, lead the Dawgs to a NC within the next 1-3 years. The whole Bulldog Nation believes that, and totally support him. CMR has the reputation within both the SEC and NCAA, of being one of the most moral, ethical, and and honest coaches in the country, and to question his sincerity regarding the offering of certain scholarships, I know FOR A FACT AS I WAS THERE AND HEARD HIM, HE TELLS A RECRUIT RIGHT UPFRONT THAT HE IS OFFERING X NUMBER OF RECRUITS AT A POSITION, THAT HE HAS X NUMBER OF SPOTS TO FILL, AND ONCE THOSE SPOTS ARE FILLED, THE OFFER IS NO LONGER ON THE TABLE. NO MONKEY BUSINESS, NO TWIST OF WORDS, NO BS, JUST THE STRAIGHT FACTS. While we have had to deal with some disapponitment, particularily in 08, the vast majority of the Bulldog Nation stands behind CMR with unwavering faith and belief in his abilities, and the abilities of his coaching staff. While I am certainly not familiar with every player to go through UGA, I do know the ones that I have spoken with are emphatic that CMR made them a better person than they were when they got to UGA, and has taught them what responsibility, dedication, and being an adult is all about. We want to win 15 games a year. UGA football has some of the most rabid fans in the country, but we also want to continue the moral standards set by Coach Dooley, and I truly believe we have our man in CMR. Oh, by the way, CMR probably won't do it, but Tennessee probably needs to bring somebody that can count past a 100 to their games with Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina, as all will ring the bell if given the oppurtunity, and perhaps KIffin will learn to keep his mouth shut when knocking some of the finest coaches in the country. Look for Tebow to play the whole game, and if Florida is 1st and goal with 10 seconds on the clock, look for the score to be 150 to 0.DapperDawg

You guys are making to much of this honoring commitments. What head coach in the SEC offers and then takes it back? That was something in the past that coaches did. Nowdays, a SEC coach’s reputation can not afford it. If you know one that does it, please get his name out there so the rest of us can benefit. Pat CMR on the back for a lot of things, but honoring commitments is pretty common. Ga has changed their recruiting strategy, the question is what is the new strategy?

Coach Dooley had more violations during his tenure than most coaches in the country! You don’t have to believe me, just investigate and inform yourself before you make your self look like a MORON! But hey, your a UGA fan, I’m sorry, you just can’t help but be a MORON!

I don’t think Vince Dooley had any NCAA violations while he was coach for 25 years. There were some (maybe 5) while he was athletic director for 15 years. That averages 1 violation every 8 years. I don’t think many coaches/athletic directors can beat that low of a total. I can’t think of any, can you?
