Newnan’s Alec Ogletree gets Oklahoma offer out of the blue

Alec Ogletree, the big safety from Newnan High, was a bit surprised by what he received in the mail last week.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior with 4.5 speed opened a letter from the University of Oklahoma that said the coaching staff wants him to be a Sooner.

“It just said ‘You are one of the top players and we’re offering you a scholarship,” said Ogletree, who added he hasn’t had any conversations with Oklahoma recruiters. “I wasn’t expecting it.”

Ogletree expects to talk to an Oklahoma recruiter this week, “probably [Monday].”

Ogletree is a leading candidate to be the state’s No. 1 prospect for 2010. So what does he take from an offer without some conversation first?

“You take it and put it with the rest of them,” he said, referring to what he thinks are about 30 offers.

Other top offers: Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Oregon, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina and Clemson.

Ogletree says the Georgia offer, directly from coach Mark Richt, came last summer after he attended a camp in Athens. “I guess he liked the way I move my hips with I’m flying around the field,” he said.

Recruiting just keeps getting weirder. It’s bad enough colleges are offering scholarships to kids as juniors and sophomores, but now we have a college who hasn’t even talked with the kid offering a scholarship. What’s next, DNA profiling at birth?

I’m sure Georgia Tech will get this guy. We are the best recruiters in the state of Georgia. Nobody who is any good wants to go elsewhere.

I suck.

One of the things that has hurt the Dawgs in recent years is lack of a big hitting safety, something we had in abundance the first five years of the decade. Sounds like this kid would be a great catch.

6’3” 210 lbs. 4.5 speed. this guy sounds sean taylor like. dawgs BETTER snatch him up if he stays in the SEC other-wise he’ll haunt them for years to come. i went to HS with eric berry and trust me this guy is like eric plus 4 inches minus a little speed.

Alec has been the best player on the field for Newnan since he was a freshman. He has all the physical tools needed to be a force at safety or OLB. But, he needs to turn it up a notch to be the game-changer he coiuld be. Kick blocking specialist, dang good at it. BTW, Alec has a non-identical twin, Zander, who’s little shorter, a little slower that plays LB for Newnan. Zander plays with a ton of heart and hustle. He grow an inch or two, he could be Div I caliber himself.
