Flowery Branch QB Connor Shaw says South Carolina is frontrunner

Flowery Branch quarterback Connor Shaw, the state’s top quarterback prospect for 2010, said that South Carolina moved ahead of Georgia Tech as his frontrunner.

Shaw, the younger brother of Georgia Tech quarterback Jaybo Shaw, made the decision after visiting South Carolina on Saturday. He got to speak with his “childhood idol,” Steve Spurrier.

Was Shaw tempted to commit to the Gamecocks? “No, I’m wide open … [but] that’s always in the back of your mind whenever you visit a college that has offered you. I really like South Carolina, but no… I don’t plan on committing any time soon.”

“I want to visit some of these other schools, like West Virginia and Wake Forest, and see what they have to say.”

Shaw has early offers from South Carolina, Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Stanford.

Okay, so now I’m confused. I’ve read some posts that say this kid is an option quarterback. If so, he’d be ideal for Tech. But other posts say he’s more of a drop back passer. That does not sound like a good fit for Tech.

Michael, any more information about what type of quarterback he truly is and what kind of offense his high school team runs?

I don’t care if he goes to Tech or not, but who in their right mind would go play QB for Spurrier. Look what he’s done to the QB’s there in the past few years. He just ran two of them out of town. Mitchell sucked because Spurrier was such a d*ck to him.

Everything you hear about FB’s program is that it’s best suited for Yech’s gimmicky offense. So if little Shaw is to be redshirted I wouldn’t see why he wouldn’t go to the trade school. Since that would only leave one year to back up his brother. The biggest problem I had with it was assuming he and his brother would both be active players for a couple of years together. One year is nothing.

If you knew the kid like i did you would know that he is a big time competitor and loves to prove ppl wrong! He sees an oppurtunity where he might be able to change things around. And for GT fans, Connor is a spread QB not a triple-option QB. His highschool runs the triple but it is out of the shotgun. Connor is a smart kid, he knows what he is doing and knows that coaches will tell him anything to get him interested but it seems like to me, he is taking in his recruiting process and if he likes USC then hope all for the best!

**anonymous88, thanks for the clarification. Sounds like he would be a good fit for Tech.

Fletch, I agree with you about Spurrier. Think about it - how many big time QBs did he put into the NFL. I guess Palmer may have been the most successful because I don’t think Weurffel lasted long. And this from a guy who’s supposed to be a QB genius? Here’s an example of how little class he has. I once heard Brian Finneran of the Falcons on a sports radio station saying that Doug Johnson shared a LOT of the insults Spurrier threw his way while at UF. He couldn’t mention them all on the radio, but the one that really stuck out to me was when Johnson once threw a pick he came off the field and Spurrier said “it’s not your fault…….I’m the one who recruited you”. That’s not low class, that’s NO class.

The Shaw kid would be better off playing for CPJ.

* anonymous*, How do you run the triple option out of a shotgun formation?

By Tokyo jacket

Dog doo, same as you do from the wing, except with 2 tailbacks in shotgun - you fake to one tail back, roll and choose to pitch to the other. Either way, halfback A or B or the QB can keep the ball, hence the third option. The difference is that it’s more of a power game at GT but more of a finesse game at shotgun schools.

By the way, the best QB Spurrier ever had, as far as the NFL is concerned, was Grossman. He started a SuperBowl a couple of years ago.

You can also run the triple out of the gun in the traditional 4 wide shotgun formation .You send one of the WR in motion behind the QB and RB and you can give to the RB, option it to the WR in motion or the QB keeps it himself.

You can also run the triple out of the traditional 4 wide shotgun set. You send a WR in motion behind the QB and while he is still in stride the ball is snapped and the QB reads to give it to the RB, pitch it to the WR in motion or keep it himself. West Virginia run this type of triple option.

Tokyo Jacket, my bad about Grossman. I guess he was the best NFL QB Spurrier ever trained. Sad part is I totally forgot about him. Much the same way I forgot about the Bears Super Bowl appearance that year.

gamecockboy, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read your post. I’ve never heard a gamecock fan brag about their great academics. I checked online and found out where US New & World Report ranked SC’s graduate international business as one of the top two in the country. So, in a weird sort of way you’re right. If this kid has aspirations of attaining a graduate degree in international business then he should consider SC. Of course, that’s AFTER he gets his undergraduate business degree from UGA or Tech and finishes his college eligibility at an in-state school. If he doesn’t make it in the NFL, the network he’ll establish by playing in his home state and getting his undergraduate degree from UGA or GT will serve him far better in the long haul than the international business graduate degree he’ll get at SC.

Maddog,

Everyone knows that Vandy, UF and UGA are top 100 schools, but the rest of the SEC (with maybe the exceptions of Ark & LSU) are very good institutions to pursue higher education as well.

Reality/Yech, good post. I’m not doubting most of the SEC offers a host of excellent degrees in a variety of majors. I just couldn’t believe a gamecock would say their excellent educational opportunities separated them from the rest of the pack.

USC gets the #1 ranking for UNDERGRADUATE international business from USNews ahead of UPenn (Wharton) and NYU (Stern).

I’m happy to discuss your assertions about having better employment chances from undergrad at Terry or GT. Right after I get back from a trip to Chicago where I am hiring someone else on Friday…

In case you have had your head burried in the red clay of GA, business has become an international game these days. Try focusing on selling only in the Southeast or worse yet only GA and you’ll go the way of so many other companies who have gone bankrupt. Conner would be smart in going to the top ranked undergard international business school in the country. By the way other than Stafford (and the jury is still out on him), how many great qb’s have the dogs put in the NFL? Oh yeah there was Zeir and Quincy LOL! Of course we could go back 50 years and count Fran Tarkenton!
