Tennessee Volunteers aggressively recruit Georgia prospects

If Lane Kiffin is building a fence around Tennessee, then it may take some time, because he and his staff are surely focusing a lot on the state of Georgia.

The Volunteers created a stir on Friday when they became the first school to offer Gainesville sophomore linebacker A.J. Johnson, one of the state’s top 2011 prospects. Yes, that’s for players signing scholarship papers almost two years from now. And no, it wasn’t Kiffin, but Tennessee assistant Ed Orgeron who delivered the news.

“[Orgeron] asked if any other school had offered A.J. yet … we told him no, and he said ‘All right, then we [Tennessee] are going to be the first,’” Gainesville assistant Todd Wofford recalled.

Tennessee has traditionally recruited very heavily in Georgia. The Volunteers have offered at least a dozen of the state’s 2010 prospects, including two of Johnson’s junior teammates at Gainesville, quarterback Blake Sims and wide receiver Tai-Ler Jones. With the Gainesville trio, UGA or Georgia Tech has only offered one - Jones (Tech).

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Jones said he was surprised by Tennessee’s extra early offer. “I’ve been hearing from a lot of schools, but none had offered. My coaches [at Gainesville] told me that Tennessee wanted to talk with me on the phone, that they were going to offer. I didn’t believe, though, until I heard the coach [Orgeron] say it.

“It was very exciting. Your first offer is special because it’s your first offer. I’m going to work hard, and hopefully I’ll get some more [offers].”

When Johnson was asked what he knew about Tennessee, he said, “They play in the SEC, and they have a defensive coordinator [Monte Kiffin, Lane’s father] who was one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL.”

Johnson had 160 tackles for Gainesville this past season.

Tennessee is most definitely making a big push in both Florida and Georgia this year, Earlier than EVER. Offer a sophomore? You gotta’ be kidding. Maybe the 2011 stud in Valdosta, but not this kid. At least not yet. But Kiffin is trying to make as much noise as he can, as quick as he can. Oh well, it won’t work. Mr. Damon Evans is from Gainesville, and no prospect will leave Gainesville without Mr. Evans’ permission.

here is what I see happening next. All the SEC coaches (minus UT) will have an understanding amoungst themselves. Go as hard as you can for your recruits. But when you are up against UT, “pile drive him”. At some point he is going to realize you can’t keep bad mouthing your fellow schools. This could be an all out war. Very interesting.

Hello to you Georgians. Have any of you listened to CLK talk about the state of Georgia??? He has said repeatedly that CMR and UGA do not guard its borders good enough. We might not get all the best players in Georgia, But we’re going to be in the running for them. Say whatever you want about Kiffin. But he’s aggressive w/recruiting and he’s going to make some statement offers in both Florida and Georgia. This is the first. A.J. Johnson is the first of five Ga 2011 prospects Tennessee will offer by the end of March. Count on that.

okay “Rocky Top Insider” I will “say whatever you want”……..you’re coach is a jacka$$ who will be gone within 30 months. LOL! UT is a joke. By the way, my 14 yr old son who plays 9th grade ball got a call from Lame train today and my boy told him to go build fences in Hamilton County TN. LOL. UT, the great joke of the south.

Offering and Signing are two different events …one is VERY easy to do and the other is a little bit tougher. Kiffin will be a “short timer” at UT. Hey UT fans, watch out for probation issues with your boy Orgeron.

To Rocky Top or any other moron who doesn’t understand one simple fact that can’t be disputed…the state of Georgia produces appx 100+ Div 1A prospects PER YEAR!! Even a signing class of 25 in one year will NOT cover every D-1A prospect in this state because there is too much talent!!! Fla, FSU, and Miami or even So.Fla, Central Fla, etc. cannot keep ALL of the talent in Florida. Same for Texas, Ohio, California, or any other talent rich state and the big name universitys that reside in them. So when Lame Kiffin says UGA does not “guard its borders” it is IMPOSSIBLE to get everyone. Some will leave no matter what (see Jarvis Jones and Darren Myles, Jr. who did not want to play close to home). Georgia will ALWAYS lost some prospects due to the wealth of talent. UGA targets who they want IN STATE and OUT OF STATE. Look at where UGA’s roster of talent comes from and u will see. Due to the lack of talent in Tenn. they have to recruit in states like Georgia. BTW, UGA took Tennessee’s top 2 prospects this year in Marlon Brown and Austin Long. C U in October!

Rocky Top you need to go back and take recruiting 101. A little education for ya. Teams like ut, alabama, florida, and out of state schools MUST offer the state of Georgia players very early. It’s standard procedure. UGA does the same when offering guys in florida, kansas, missouri, texas, and california. Georgia is the instate school so they will be more selective and wait a little bit to offer players and that rarely hurts them. They will be offering the gainesville trio March 21st during their Jr. Day.

UT is offering everyone in Georgia. In the past 7 days they haven’t missed an available player in Georiga. Kiffin is throwing out offers as if they have 80 scholarships and that’s fine because he HAS to if he has any chance of getting a kid from Georgia. UGA is the ONLY team to have 8 straight top 10 recruiting classes on rivals. CMR and CRG know what they are doing.

Tennessee guards its borders very well. Of course nobody wants to enter based upon population numbers. You also must love those per capita income numbers, spouse abuse, drunk driving deaths and teenage pregnency numbers that all rank in the Top 10, except for the per capita income. Studies have demonstrated that the areas within 100 miles of Knoxville are notorious for inbreeding. Tennessee must leave the state to recruit because of the dearth of quality high school athletes within its borders. Vanderbilt, a quality institution of higher learning with global name recognition, must
share a state, that plays as its Fight Song, a ridiculous piece of Hillbilly Blue Grass, made famous by a tramp from one of their many hollers. Hollers also describe the vocal outbursts made by poor young girls trying to escape their stepfathers.

All in all, a rather pitiful state and one first known for its ridiculous level of cheating with the Bernie and Ernie Show. Recruited from New York by a psychotic Ray Mears and a dwarf bagman, Stu Sberdeen, Bernard King, a renowned cross dresser and Ernie Grunfeld(Right, real good reason for someone with the last name of Grunfeld leaving New York City for the Tennessee Hills) made Tennessee famous for its level of purchasing players.

Now, there may be a new guy on the scene capable of shattering the Mears and Aberdeen Experience. Time will tell.

DOG 74- Rocky Top was written by a native GEORGIAN named Boudleaux Bryant, a classical violinist who was in the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra before going C&W. ALL SEC states consist of varying degrees of hillbillies, rednecks, snobs, hiphoppers… all kinds of people. I live 90 miles from Knoxville,in Kingsport.(Hometown of former Dawg Larry Cage-Herschel’s roommate)-Believe it or not I see much less of the stereotypical overall wearing types here than I did in Loganville and Lawrenceville. I realize some of this is good-natured fun, but at times it goes from fun to a real insult to a whole state. Remember, people outside the South think we’re all dumb hillbillies. I don’t know if Kiffin is going to be a success at UT. I personally wanted Will Muschamp to get the job. Lets get off the UT-UGA hate and focus on the real enemy, the GATORS.

This guy Carvell will do anything to stir up some crap. He must be about to lose this gig and he found something in Kiffin you folks will argue about. That will ultimately save his job. Is it against the law that a coach offers a kid that has already played his soph. season? I think they have junior camps. Carvell is spinning it that he is a soph. Lots of teams ( I believe even UGA) has offered a kid that is going into their junior football season.Bottom line I think Carvell “wants” Kiffin.

If Coach Oregeron shows up drunk and surly at another recruits house, UT might not get any of em.

Oh, and I would keep the regional descriptions for indigenous people to myself also if I were you, Coach O. What passes for an acceptable term for Cajuns in Louisiana is definitely not a term you want to use in the living room of an African-American family that’s not from your area. The term kind of has a negative conotation for African-American people….especially those who are old enough to remember the 50s and 60s.

Do these things, Coach O, and UT still might be able to get the players that UGA doesn’t recruit…..for the next 2-4 years, anyway….That’s about how long the coaching staff at UT is gonna last before they are s**t-canned.

By Dawgtime

February 21, 2009 8:42 AM | Link to this

To me, this situation has desperation written all over it. Coach Orgeron is known for being an extremist. What happened at Ole Miss? He was fired and kids grew tired of his fire and brimstone speeches. Al Davis found that Lane Kiffin was not an adequate coach and fired him. Kiffin brings his senior citizen father from the NFL. Do you real believe that he will relate to teenagers? Just because you offer a kid early does not mean that the kid will sign with the school. Actually, many coaches, parents, and kids see through the veil of desperation. UT is a good school with great southern traditions and Kiffin seems to lack understanding of southern class. With his mouth and desperation, he will have that honored school on probation within two years. Allegations have a way of biting the sender. Making accusations against a kid’s family will destroy his reputation. His tactics are not going to work. When a kid selects a different school, you don’t throw insults and innuendos. That is a lack of class. In terms of early offers, there is no way that coaching staff has adequately scouted all these kids. They are just reading the hype and making offers. As we will see, that won’t work for a variety of reasons. You cannot beg a kid and then threaten him into signing and then when he signs elsewhere, you find the need to throw insults and insinuations. Phillip Fulmer has to be shaking his head in disbelief. Go DAWGS.

This conversation has degenerated into name calling that does not address the real problem. The NCAA needs to prohibit colleges from contact with recruits before their senior year. Offering scholarships to 10th graders is absurd. All of this pandering has created an atmosphere of entitlement that is not good for college football. These kids need to focus on school, not on guaranteed playing time and dreams of big NFL contracts. If the NCAA enforced some realistic regulations regarding recruiting, the quality of play would not suffer, academics would improve, and criminal arrests would probably drop.

I hope Lame Kitten won’t be gone by 2011 because he is going to suck as the Tennessee coach. He did not have what it takes to make it in the NFL and he does not have what it takes to make it in the SEC. He is a moron.

I do not think the new coach at Auburn will make it either. I don’t even know his name but I know he is not from the south either and will recruit poorly and coach worse.

Both schools were stupid to fire their coaches and will regret it. It was a shame that Sylvester Croom resigned at Mississippi State too. All 3 coaches just had a rough year and their schools should have stood by them.

Mississippi State got the best coach of the 3 SEC schools that changed coaches this year. I thought Croom was bringing the program along and should not have left. The new MSU coach is the ex Florida offensive coordiantor and I expect him to kick some butt in the SEC West.

Lame Kitten….what a freaking joke. LOL

A.J. Johnson is a stand up kid. He is intelligent and will make th right decision. For those who think it too early…well yo might want to check this kid out (special..very special). He was the best LB in Hall co. this past season and that includes Vasser at Chestatee (UGA signee). Whats even more unbelieveable is the freshman at UGA #44 (forget is name sorry) is probably better than both. A.J. is All-state as a soph. and for good reason. AJ will probably play DE in college and may this season at GHS due to the talent at LB. Gainesville gets a transfer (A very good LB) from North Hall and the coaches aren’t sure where or if he’s got a position yet.

I can tell you that the expectations at Gainesville right now have never been higher. I played with Damon and personally know him. He supports Gainesville well and knows about AJ, Blake Sims and TJ Jones<(Getting a lot of UGA attention). Damon is not the coach at UGA, but I know he has made CMR aware is he needed to be told. There is no story here. UT always recruited in Georgia. They aren’t doing anything different now. They aren’t going to be any more successful than in the past — especially given that Kiffin is rapidly making a fool of himself and is a risk to bolt from UT after two or three years IF he does start winning.

If UT starts beating Georgia for a bunch of instate Georgia players, that will be a story. Don’t count on it.

Perhaps many of the SEC graduates need to understand that football is not the most important value to an instituition. It is the education. Get a life. Our society needs to move away from the exhorbitantly paid atheletes and focus more on the atheletes graduating and getting real jobs. This is the primary purpose for these student atheletes. Fyi I am a student at the seventh ranked public institution in the country. We also had the best academic statistics for atheletes but still had over a 200 point difference between our athelete’s SAT scores and our own. That is the true problem, accepting atheletes who cannot compete academically. The purpose of college is an education, not football.

Who cares is right. UT has always raided Georgia. Heck, if they haven’t they wouldn’t have been able to field a football ever. So yes, nonstory, absolutely.

LOL, the big homo thinks Saint Johnson is getting the first pick of Georgia players over Richt. I can’t stop laughing!?!?!??!!?!?

Hey Student, I agree with you 100 percent. We need to get real, these kids are not here to be students, they are here to make money for the institutions. There are exceptions to the rule, but there aren’t many football players at GT that would have been granted admission had it not been for their football abilities. I hate all the hypocrisy, but that is the world we live in, football has become a million dollar business, and the relentless pursuit to be the best has gutted our University system.

For all of you ignorant Georgia fans making fun of the song Rocky Top just remember it was written by a Georgian. The Bryants were from Shellman Georgia. Idiots!

Hey, Gainesville Red Elephant…thanks for the 411 you frieking idiot! No kidding he was the best LB in Hall County. He made 2nd team All-American with Max Preps Sports! He will not play DE in college and WILL NOT PLAY it in high school. Do you think that just because another LB transfers in that a team would move their best player on defense to another position? What a moron! You claim to know Damon, but you obviously don’t know anything about football. Nobody but you gives a rat’s @!% about Gainesville. And quit sending the same message twice. If you noticed, the message at the bottom says there is up to a 5 minute delay…dumb#@!% like you should have your blogging privileges revoked.

Recruiting 101: Recruit all Georgia Kids. Why, very little talent in 10RC. UT fans get fired up every saturday to watch ” Georgia Boys ” display their talent at Rocky Top. As a life time UGA fan I would rather keep the roster loaded with in state talent. I’m close friends with a former UT LB who really thinks UT will be searching for another coach in 2-3 years. If Kiffen loses 5-6 next year he will regret coming to K-town. The Heat gets turned on in September.

Relax folks! Obviously UT will continue (yes they always have) to recruit hard in Georgia. After all, that’s where some of the best high school football players in the country are located. Tennessee is fairly weak in the high school football talent category (remember the one concern about Marlon Brown is the fact that he has not played against strong high school competition). Coach Kiffin may be in need of full time counseling, but even he can figure this one out.

As in the past, UT will always get a few of the good players in Georgia. However, also as in the past, they will not be able to win the overall recruiting contest vs. UGA in Georgia.

In fact, I think the headline to this article is misleading. Nothing really significant is going on here.

As for the song - seems to be an irrelevant discussion vis a vie the topic.

680 just said UGA will be lucky to win 7 games next year, and the game in Knoxville isn’t a win for them! HAHA, imagine how sad you’ll be after making fun of Kiffin for 10 months only to get embarrassed by the Vols.
