S.C. defensive tackle Kwame Geathers provides a little drama before signing with Georgia

Defensive lineman Kwame Geathers of Georgetown, S.C., provided a little drama on Friday afternoon before signing with Georgia.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Geathers signed with Georgia over Central Florida and Tennessee, according to Carver’s Bay coach James Thompson.

“He picked Georgia; he signed the papers, and we’re faxing over the papers as we speak,” Thompson told the AJC around 3 p.m. Friday.

At the signing ceremony, Geathers had hats from all three schools in front him. He grabbed the Central Florida cap and put it on his head. “Everybody said, ‘Oh that’s great, Kwame. You’ll have fun playing with your cousin’ [Central Florida’s Jarvis Geathers],” Thompson said.

Then Geathers smiled, and switched hats, putting on Georgia. “Everybody didn’t know what to think at that point. Then they asked ‘OK, Kwame, are you going to Georgia?’ He smiled, and said ‘Yes, Georgia … that’s the one.’”

Geathers, who was the Defensive MVP of the Offense-Defense game near Myrtle Beach, S.C., got high praise from his coach.

“He is one of the best of the Geathers, and that’s saying a lot if you know about the family’s football history,” Thompson said. “Georgia is getting a great young man. He has a chance to be a special player. … He is very good, not only on the field, but also in the classroom and as a person. He is just one of those guys you enjoy coaching and being around.”

Fans of UGA and the Atlanta Falcons are familiar with the “Geathers” name. Kwame’s uncle, Jumpy Geathers, played 13 years in the NFL, including the 1994 and ‘95 seasons with the Falcons.

Kwame’s older brother, Robert Geathers, played at UGA from 2001-2003 and declared for the NFL draft after becoming a full-time starter his junior year. Robert recently completed his fifth year playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, starting 11 games at defensive end before being sidelined with a knee injury.

Another of Kwame’s brothers, Clifton Geathers, committed to Georgia in 2006, but did not meet college entrance requirements and enrolled at Hargrave Military (Va.) prep school. Georgia coaches stopped recruiting Clifton, and he signed with South Carolina.

UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner is a close family friend of the Geathers.

Congratulations Kwame. May you succeed both in the classroom and on the football field. Now, where are all those “Rocky Flop” fans that claimed he was signing with UT? And for you “Techies” out there that laughed about UGA and UCF fighting it out over a recruit. I did not read ANY article where this kid was even remotely interested in the bees. And before you post 45-42 for the zillionth time may I remind you that even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then. My clock is still set for 6:09. GO DAWGS!!!

What could I do?

He loved me, EVERYONE loves me!

But his parents and brothers and uncle and everyone said he’d be stupid to play for me in Rockyflop, so Mark Richt went and cheated by letting his family influence his decision and there you go…

… because that’s the only reason I lose recruits. The family, or the cheating coach.

Otherwise, me and my Pappy would sign everyone we want, unless they’re the top-2 prospects in my state, because those spots are reserved for that cheating coach, Mark Richt.

Is he just an attention seeker? I absolutely despise when they put on a hat and say “psych” and put on another. Disrespectful to schools and shows a “me, me, me” attitude. Not impressed when they do that and doesn’t scream “team player” to me.

Orson might have a reason to wait since his coach would not let him take visits during football season.

That’s just my two cents.

He didn’t choose the Vols because he could’nt stand up to the new “non-thug” standard at UT. No earrings, no noserings, pants must be at waist, players must sit on 2 front rows in class and GO to class, etc, etc. Also, he probably was afraid of our work ethic and was not inclined to be NFL ready when he leaves us. Enough said??? I would personally like to see all the unclassy, cheesy, low classed tattoos go also.

Daddy Kiffin:

The part your not getting is that at Georgia the kids are already required to go to class. This is not just a football requirement, it is a requirement established by the athletic director. If you do not attend class, you do not play. It is that simple.

UT has a great tradition. But in this case, your behind the curve. This standard was established at UGA a couple of years back. UGA’S graduation rate has climbed consistently since CMR came to UGA.

So basically stating that the kid didn’t come to U.T. because the standards are higher is nothing more than wishful thinking, if not laughable.

By Maddog

February 20, 2009 4:54 PM | Link to this

The Big Big, “you gotta be kidding me” is right!Look, the Tech “tough curriculum and entrance” requirements for their athletes is about as valid as the tooth fairy. Oops, I didn’t spoil things for you now did I? Stephon Marbury, Reggie Ball, etc, etc. I’ll alert the folks at snopes.com and urbanlegends.com to update their sites to include this perpetual myth.

While I am extremely happy to see this young man sign with UGA, it relly doesn’t matter one hill of beans in the overall scheme of things. Bottom line; you still have to play the games. Last I heard you cannot measure heart with stars!

There seems to be only one common denominator that seemingly exists between recruiting and NC/BCS appearances. That appears to be in having either a top one or two recruiting class one or two years prior to the schools appearance in THE GAME.(See USC, FL, Ala, Okla, etc.) UGA has yet to accomplish this task. If OC were to sign, we might sneak in up there, or at least be close.

In the meantime, I am glad he- Kwame- chose UGA and I wish him the best, and hope that he makes the most of the opportunity. Just like I would have had he gone to UCF or UT. The whole thing-recruiting- is an awesome experience. I can only imagine what it is like in this day and time…..witness these blogs and some of their comments.

big bug - Let’s not get confused here. That’s called panting, not sweating. Dogs force air over their tongues which is what cools their bodies down. That’s why they have more saliva when they get hot - because the extra moisture cools the air off more quickly. That’s also why you see Uga sitting on a bag of ice down on the field. Because dogs can’t regulate their internal temperature as efficiently as a person who can sweat.

Unless you were trying to imply that Georgia is nervous because you smell slobber which wouldn’t make any sense at all.

HEY BlACK AND RED WINNER DOG—or is it weenie dog. In your last post, you told your cronies to “whoff” like a dog I guess. Is whoff similar to woof or sometning, or is it what you yell when the Jackets have kicked your but. Go back to white washing the trees around your trailer.

AGAIN, THIS YOUNG MAN IS A BEAST

several good sources from SC gave the thumbs up on Kwame Geathers……

Orson Charles “NEXT??”

he could make a more immeadiate impact….

if Orson joins us in athens, all i can say is “WOW” we would have by far the best AIR FORCE in the SEC for at least a few years…..don’t forget about the kids on scholarship that had limited playing time, some with injury, some redshirted…..all very talented

two questions…

first, can we get them the ball? i believe COX brings an attitude with an arm and a mission to show up.

second, will the defense come to play and will we be healthy? one thing is certain, we will be better than we were for those two quarters(FL&AL) and hopefully an attitude to prove we were better than we played last year…..i give Willie one more year to prove himself as a def coach and i say he has the D playing UP in “09”.

looking forward…again..WELCOME the “BEAST KWAME” LOVE IT!!!

Vandy,

The douchebags from North Ave. are as dumb as they get. CircleJerk (who is now using his other 22 handles aka “Big Bug”) said the 2007 QB class coming out of hs was better than the 2005. Then on his other handle he didn’t know how to spell “spelling bee” and now he thinks dogs sweat. LOL!!!! Yech fans are dumber than dirt but so entertaining!!! :)

Chrissy,

Yes, I checked it out. I thought I had visited there before. Even you would have to admit that this list is ludicrous. It even slaps UGA in the face. Forbes itself must be so embarrassed by this list that they wont even print the criteria for the ranking system. From what I gather from all the outraged bloggers on the site, the most heavily weighed criteria is the student’s ranking of professors. How ridiculous is that? You have to wonder about anything Forbes prints now.But why do I waste my time. You’re just trying to get a rise out of me anyway, aren’t you RealityYech?

Give your state schools some credit. U.S. News & World Report (most widely recognised & quoted)gives the Flagship School a 7 and UGA a 22. Both very commendable!

I’m a rambling wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of a freaking queer…A hell of a, hell of a hell, of a freaking queer. Just like my terrorist roommate I take it in the rear. I’m a ramble wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of freaking queer

By GA Tech Insider

February 21, 2009 10:17 AM | Link to this

Most of you so called fans for both Georgia, and GA Tech, amaze me. Do you have any sense at all? Do you understand the Polling system, and how Teams get ranked, and the best chance for either Team to have a shot at that National Championship you are each wasting our time with?

For those of you who are too lazy to look up how the Polls are worked, or too dense to understand, Teams get Ranked based on their perceived strength against other perceived strong Teams.

How do Teams move up, or down, the Polls?

Teams move down the Polls by losing, or by beating Teams that are perceived to be weak by the Pollsters when other Ranked Teams are beating other Ranked Teams.

Teams move up the Polls by winning, and Teams higher than them in the Polls lose (this isn’t always the case, depending on the Ranking of the Team the higher Ranked Team that they lost to and the Team you beat), or by Ranked Teams **BEATING HIGHER RANKED TEAMS.”

Now, let’s say that either UGA, or GA Tech for that matter, loses a Conference Game early in the season, but manages to inch their way back up the Polls into the Top 10. Wouldn’t it be easier to have a shot to still be able to play in the National Championship Game if your arch Rival was also highly Ranked, regardless of whether you backed your way into a League Championship Game?

On the other hand, what if that early loss kept you out of the League Championship Game, but you still had a chance to actually end up with a higher Ranking than the League Champion because you had less out of Conference losses? Wouldn’t you still want a shot at the National Championship Game?

The only way this can happen is if both UGA and GA Tech are highly Ranked at the end of the year. Heck, I personally hope that both Teams are undefeated when they play each other. Can you imagine they hype the game would get year in and year out?

The other thing you people seem to be forgetting is that, at least on the Offensive side of the line, there is very little overlap in Recruits the Teams are going after.

The Offensive Linemen profiles are different; QB profiles are different; for the most part, RB profiles are different; and WR/TE profiles are different.

Defensively, both Teams will go after some of the same players, but do you know what, there are plenty of Players to go around, and we should all be rejoicing when we both get great Classes of Recruits signed.

That means both Teams will be highly Ranked for years to come, and give both Teams a shot at the National Championship for years to come.

The worst thing it would do is give all of us fans and exciting game every year, and hey, there’s nothing wrong with that either, is there?

I’m suspicious of those who appear to be Dawgs and incessantly appear to be creating aspersions cast at Tenn’s new coach. I doubt that they are Dawgs, just idiots trying to start another border war. Don’t think anyone is going to take you up on it because true Dawg fans drop by the Athens Banner Herald and read that the media guy who started some of the “Kiffin says the Dawgs cheat” talk has disavowed those statements as the wrong takeoff on his question. He also states further that this is the wrong take and he did not hear Kiffen say on radio that UGA cheats. So, read the truth and stop the assinine insults to both schools. You become a gossip and liar by repeating a nontruth, but some of you can’t perceive that as an insult to your warped mind. Unless you use a cuss word, you can’t get the denigration, you dumb a———.

I think Orson Charles will make the best decision as to where he wants to play. USC and So. Ca. in general have a more storied program(both good and bad) and more modern facilities for practice that can sway some highschoolers. UGA’s Stadium and parts of our program are better than USC’s. Much entertainment near Glendale, but downtown Athens fears no one when it comes to new and unique cutting edge entertainment. Where would he start play first becomes a big question. He would definitely play more at UGA in different positions(offense, defense and special teams)while he waits his starting position whereas at USC he may play on special teams only and early. There are too many good players at USC from past top-5 classes who are still on special teams awaiting their chance, so the special teams play there may also be curtailed. When it comes down to coaching staff I see UGA and USC as equals, but the team and the SEC should make the difference. I not only think that Orson has a better fit at UGA, but he will genuinely enjoy his time on this team for the next three years. This is already a difference-making team and Orson will only add greatly to it. For his talents, the only other team he would fit is Shannon’s at Miami and they aren’t in his final competition. Whatever he decides to do he will pick for himself. I don’t see a big influence outside. He will confer with his family and pastor who will have less input on his decision than his own. Then he will declare. Somehow he doesn’t strike me as some kid playing a media game.

I hope he is a Dawg. We need future leaders who know their own mind and can stand back to see the team as a whole. I think he is one.

UgaVII- Can we arrange a meeting with you to look him straight in the eye and let him see his future? It would probably be against NCAA rules at this stage. How about sending him a video of you barking and staring at him?

Well, from what I hear about Rival’s, if he would have signed with Bama he would suddenly be a 5 star. Something about a bunch of Bama people running Rival’s. May be just jealous Auburn people? A large framed, atheletic DT is just what the doctor ordered IMO, not how many stars are attached to his name. As far as all of these Techies bragging about their win in 2008, they will not be able to do it again for another seven or eight years, so naturally they are going to have their day on our blogs. I believe our D is serious about the changes in work ethic, leadership, and as a team overall, to stay out of trouble this summer, which will be a source of achievement to the players who keep their noses clean as well as the ones in trouble, and will go a long way towards developing that chemistry that was talked about in an earlier blog. Sometimes just doing the right thing among players is enough to return the team bond that seemed to be turned on and off like a light switch at different times during the last three seasons. Yes we are young at the skill positions, but Caleb knows what he has to do to elevate his game to the required level, and I’ll take all of the young receivers like A.J. we can get. All in all things really seem to be looking back up at UGA in terms of what it will take to get back on top of the East.

Chainsaw: I thought that I checked Rivals and Scout on Friday afternoon(Right after he signed) but today(Sunday) Scout has him at 4-stars. Probably the results of all the hype towards the end of the signing period. I also noticed that Scout now has Marlon Brown and Aaron Murry as 5-stars. Not too far back Brandon Smith was our only 5-star. It’s not really that important at this point but all-star game probably got Kwame up to a 4-star.

He will never reach KM status. It may be mental because of the broken leg. Also he had very good blocking in his sophomore and junior years in highschool.
