Georgia reserves No. 33 jersey for M.L. King RB Mack Brown
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
M.L. King’s Mack Brown, one of the nation’s top tailbacks for 2010, said Georgia has promised to save the No. 33 jersey if he signs with the Bulldogs.
Brown, who has 15 early scholarship offers, including UGA and Georgia Tech, said the issue came up during a recent conversation with Georgia running backs coach Bryan McClendon.
“[McClendon] said I could keep my high school number in college, if I wanted,” Brown said. “I thought that was pretty cool. It let me know that Georgia really wants me.”
At Georgia, No. 33 is worn by rising junior tailback Kalvin Daniels.
Brown said UGA is one of many schools that have promised to reserve No. 33 for him. “I can’t remember all of them, but I know Florida said that … and so did Oklahoma.”
Saving jersey numbers for elite prospects is a common recruiting practice. Tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, who is one of the nation’s top unsigned seniors, said Georgia reserved Matthew Stafford’s No. 7 jersey for him, while Lowndes cornerback Greg Reid (who signed with Florida State) said he was promised Knowshon Moreno’s No. 24 had he picked UGA.

That should send a message to Kalvin Daniels about where he stands on the totem pole.

Pretty sure Kalvin Daniels already knows where he stands on the totem pole….
Daniels ain’t playing a down of football this year… its not like they’re taking the number from Caleb King or something

Kalvin Daniels only committed to UGA because he was promised #33. I wonder how he feels about UGA promises now?

Really? Not the great campus, elite football program, nice facilities, top flight education. HAH.

dawgfan09,
Kalvin Daniels actually came to UGA football as a walk-on and was never promised a jersey number. I think dawgdump is secretly a dawg-hater just trying to mess with us.

It’s funny that UGA has to promise kids their numbers just to get them to consider going there. UGA SUCKS!!!

What a joke of a recruiting strategy. And what a joke of a report. You think all you damn dogs who write for the sports section of the AJC could give Tech any kind of a shot with the State’s elite prospects. Hell, if Mack Brown signed with Tech, the AJC would downgrade his talents. It won’t matter though, cause if Georgia can’t beat 16 of 22 freshmen and sophomores who were never good enough to have their numbers reserved for them, then they aint ever gonna win. Stafford and Moreno was about as close as they’ll get against Johnson. LOL

If the jersey number is vacant why not offer it? Green who wore #1 in high school is wearing #8 and told Bradden Smith he could wear #1 in college if he came to play with the DAWGS. Eventhough, he could get it after Moss.. graduated. I am sure the Daniel was probably asked. We have a great team and not great individuals. They are willing to sacrifice to make the team better. GO DAWGS….

Stop, your stories are getting far-fetched. Kalvin Daniels played TB and FS at Dodge County High School. His high school number was 1 and not 33. He was a solid football player and an excellent student. With his grades, he elected to enroll at UGA. As a UGA student, he decided to walk-on the football team. He is on the small side (5’10 185), but impressed the coaches with his quickness. He never expected to be a star at UGA. He is just a great kid having a great time at a great school. If you believe he had an issue with the number 33, check out Danelle Ellerbe’s number last year. Kalvin would have no problem switching to another number. He is a team first kid. He was promised nothing out of high school. In terms of the GT responses, I refuse to debate with ignorance. Check out the last decade. Mack Brown is a future DAWG. I heard that GT is using the Choice kid as an example. Hmmm, he was a 3rd string back that played because of injuries. Herschel Walker, Lars Tate, Tim Worley, Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary, Rodney Hampton, Knowshon Moreno, Garrison Hearst, Mack Strong, J.T. Walls, Brannon Southerland, Hines Ward (played some TB at UGA), Patrick Pass, Thomas Brown, Veron Haynes, and many more. We are running back U for a reason.

I have a couple of suggestions for John Heisman. First, be careful posting from your security guard position at 1:23 A.M. The boss may catch you. You need to make your rounds. Second, between your checks you need to read a grammar and syntax manual. Your grammar is atrocious. When you switch screen names from Sports Fan, wait more than 10 minutes to post. It becomes obvious because of the post delays and time of day. The puerility of your comments reveals a great about your mindset. “UGA sucks”, that is so sad that you have to resort to a teenage vernacular to express your useless views. Don’t hate UGA because of your inferiority complex. GT will always be the jealous ugly chick and UGA will always be the popular chick that everyone compares themselves to and all the boys desire. I decided to include that so that you could comprehend my point. GO DAWGS.

Its pretty amusing how much college coaches do to reel a kid in now. If they could still pay and get away with it (outside the state of Alabama) they would. Tommy Bowdon promised kids the first carry of their freshman year…and against Alabama their freshman RB got to fumble in front of a nationwide audience his first time touching the ball as a college player. I wonder if that kid is glad he made the decision to go to Clemson based on something stupid. If a kid wants to go to a school because they’ll reserve a jersey number for him, he’s not smart enough to go to Tech anyway. THWG

SPORTS FAN: Chances are YOUR team sucks. If not, then you would not be on this blog. You would be on your team’s blog. By the way, if you can’t get UGA tickets this year, you can probably get Tech tickets, there was 7,000 per game available last year.

If Michael Johnson can hang around the trade school for 5 years, then I’m pretty sure the average middle schooler can as well.
A jersey number makes more since than homo rings that you did nothing to earn. Unless you like to wear dresses and lipstick….

Wow…is that what it takes now to get people to commit? Promising jersey numbers. I hope like hell my school doesnt have a kid who will pick us strictly on the # he is allowed to wear. This didnt work with Reid so hopefully the 2nd time is teh charm.

Haters ——why all the hate??? Since Tech has reached their new status as a super power in college football I cant understand all the hate. Techies—-youre top 2 or 3 in the country now so you dont need a top five signing class to kill Ga this year or anyone else in your way . Josh Nesbitt: Hope you get a look from the pros cuz they dont draft running quarterbacks in the NFL. You should be the best safety or running back in the state. Instead theyve got you running the option. There are zero pro teams running that offense.

The fear from UGAy fans reeks even through the computer. They realize we have the best coach of this generation now at the helm. They know we now pick and choose any kids we want from all over the country. They realize that our kids actually graduate with several engineering degrees while theirs need tutors to take their underwater basket weaving classes for them. They realize we’re going to add on to our 8 National Championships with a run of winning the next 8 of 10, at least. UGA had their window and blew it. What is old is new again, and that is the mighty powerhouse of Georgia Tech!!

Frank @ 3:03 PM - “The Joke by Coke”! ROTFLMAO!!! That’s hilarious…yet very accurate! ;-)
These HS recruits totally let their own (deluded) press go to their heads/egos. This is just another example of pandering to overhyped kids who’ve not played so much as a down of college football. Far too many of these 4 & 5 star “bluechippers” are busts in college. The big time programs need to cut back on the brown-nosing of HS recruits.

Whatever happened to “earning your number”? Most of these prima donnas will never contribute 1/1000th of what is spent for their scholarship. If UGA would recruit character, desire, loyalty, as well as potential, and players that put TEAM first an me second, then we would contend for the MNC every year. How many championships have we won with star players like Jasper Sanks, Mudcat, Quincy, Zellner, Rashard, Caleb, Dewberry, Stafford, and all the other can’t miss 5 stars. And how many championships with Belue, Scott, Walker, Greene, Pollack…players that put TEAM first. Put Searles in charge of recruiting, not Rodney, and maybe you’ll see what I’m talking about. Peace.

What do you expect? UGAy and its fans are a “me first” outfit. What has UGAy ever “earned?” Had we not shown you dogs in 1980 that Notre Dame was beatable you wouldn’t have even won that championship. As if UGAy’s players even “earn” their degrees. The 5% that actually get one.

World why the hate? You won last year, get over the mentality. If the kid wants to go to UGA or Tech he has the opportunity to get a good education. I can’t see the big deal made about promising a recruit a number. Let’s just hope and pray the kid stays healthy, works on his studies and chooses the school that best fits his desires. Good luck Mack Brown, wherever you decide to attend college.

So Ga tech has 8 national championships?!! LMAO!! in what, Mathematics competition?!!! You people never cease to amaze the entire college football world with your delusion. CPJ is a great coach, but he isn’t going to win any majority of games against Mark Richt. PLUS, he’ll be gone to Notre Dame or somewhere else within 5 seasons.

CPJ won’t win the majority of the games against Richt? How do you figure? He’s already 1-0 in his first season with his new system against the best team UGA has supposedly had since ‘80? Your logic is clouded. With another year under his belt and and playing at home next year I doubt Cox can keep the puppies in the game for even a quarter. Yes, we do have 8 NC’s, look it up!!! The ACC is back on top. We had the most bowl teams last year and FSU, Va. Tech and Miami are returning to old form. Tech again will be the flagship program of the south.
