Union Grove DE Anthony Williams “can see myself” playing at Georgia Tech

Union Grove’s Anthony Williams said he had work to do for his father Wednesday afternoon before basketball practice and wasn’t able to talk on the phone.

So the Union Grove defensive end did what many high-school juniors do. He chatted electronically.

“He has me working on the computer,” Williams said in a text message. “Working on SAT [and] ACT questions.” He also fielded questions about recruiting.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound junior said he has official offers from Georgia Tech, Stanford, West Virginia, Auburn and Central Florida. He attended the recent Junior Day at Tech and plans to attend one at Central Florida on Feb. 28.

He said his experience at the Tech visit was outstanding. “I really like Tech,” he said. “Coach [Paul] Johnson is a very good coach and I can see myself playing for him … close to home … familiar with some of the players.”

He said Tech is interested in playing him at DE and likes his quickness off the ball, long arms and “my passion for the game.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s leaning toward the Yellow Jackets. “Basically, I’m excited about every offer I have so far,” he said. “Every offer right now is the same.”

Seems like GT and Cen. Florida are after all the same kids. I wonder if CPJ will steal another UCF commitment, but yet turn right around and yank a scholy from one of his kids that wishes to take one last visit somewhere else?

I really don’t understand what people are missing here about GT recruiting. Recruits can take all of their visits and CPJ has no problem with that, until they commit to GT. He tells them if you want to look around don’t tell me you are committed, wait. However, once a kid is committed he is done. This is really easy, it is like your wife telling you not to date anymore once you are married.

Some people need to learn what the word committment means before they enter into one.

To that point it is not GT’s concern what other programs do with there committed players, I am sure he would like it if other schools pulled their committed players offers if they visited GT. That sure would make CPJ’s recruiting job easier.

Actually, It’s more like continuing to date around after you are ‘engaged’ to be married. But, the point is the same, not many women (or men) would put up with it. Don’t commit until you are ready to stop shopping around.

No, the point is the DOUBLE STANDARD. He will allow recruits who have committed elsewhere to visit Tech. He will not allow Tech committments to look elsewhere. I respect that but do not hold a double standard.

Ben, you still don’t get it.

In one case, a kid made a commitment to Paul Johnson, after agreeing to not make said commitment until he is truly ready.

In the case where a kid visits GT after being verbally committed somewhere else, the kid in question did NOT make (or break) a commitment to Coach Johnson. In fact, it’s doubtful that the other coach went into detail about his specific definition of the word commitment. Furthermore, any conversation had between two other parties would be hearsay to Coach Johnson, has he is only hearing second hand information.

A commitment TO Coach Johnson is a first hand agreement that was discussed and clear to both parties…and completely voluntary.

Another way to put it is, the commitment to the other school is really just hearsay to Coach Johnson and the recruit, because both of them were not there in person to hear the terms. On the other hand, a verbal commitment to Coach Johnson only ever occurs after a serious discussion about what it means to make a commitment to Coach Johnson.

Rock on.

GT 92: Spin it how you want…..matter of semantics for you I guess. Justify it all you want if it makes you feel better. I think Ben nailed it….it is a double standard. I promise you that if a top athlete in the country that Tech needed at the position….he wouldn’t pull their offer if he decided to “look around.”

It would only be a double standard if CPJ criticized Auburn for offering a kid that has committed to GT (and he has not criticized Auburn).

It’s not worth trying to reason with UGa bloggers. Many UGa fans (and friends of mine) are reasonable people. Bloggers are different breed of stupid.

Upstate: What?? Come again? Allow committed players (S. Hill) to visit and not allow Aycock to visit other schools. That’s the point. The CPJ and Auburn correlation makes zero sense.

Deuce (the dumb-arse) ….

Can you read? If so, then you can’t comprehend!

Upstate Jacket stated exactly the facts. CPJ did NOT criticize Auburn. He HAS NO CONTROL over what Auburn does in its recruiting practices.

CPJ simply states another FACT in regards to Aycock. He committed to GA Tech. CPJ has stated what a committment to TECH means. It means, to CPJ, that the player has COMMITTED to Tech, and vice-versa; THEREFORE, the recruiting process is FINISHED, and there is no need for a COMMITTED player of his to entertain offers from other schools.

RESPECT! That’s a nice quality CPJ is developing for the GA Tech football program. Don’t commit to TECH unless you are SURE committed.

If the kid Hill decided on his own to seek other options, is CPJ supposed to say NO, you can’t play here b/c you told someone else you were planning to play for them???

The precedent CPJ is setting at Tech is that simple…and GREAT! You say you’re committed to TECH, then BY GOD you are committed to TECH. Go visit someone else after the fact, and you’re no longer the quality of person suitable for the Jackets. Live up to your committment, or don’t make the committment in the first place! Awesome line of thinking CPJ.

Seems lots of GA fans are worried about the character, integrity, respect, loyalty, etc. that CPJ is developing on the Flats. And they like to think that one thing is the same as the other as far as committing to Tech, and committing to another school. We as Tech fans, as simple as we make it out to these “different breed of stupid” people, will NEVER be able to realize or admit their fear/jealousy of what’s happening at Tech under CPJ.

Well, too bad pups, the man’s got a plan that works, and I’m afraid he’s not going to change it b/c YOU think it’s a “double standard”.

By the way …… Tech beats GA in 2009 too!

Character, integrity, respect, loyalty. All of this just falls in line with the typical differences in fan bases, boosters, student athletes and the faculty with these two schools. To a point where their AD claims that they aren’t cheaters, while seven out of ten kids that play ball there are “special.” Hell, they’ve had to hire a firm to do his job! Of all people not to know anything about coaching, your f—-ing AD???? And really, what does a UGAy fan know about standards?

Hill did not take a visit. We don’t know what would have happened if he had.

The commitment rules set forth by CPJ are all about being efficient. Time, money, and visits are at a premium (probably even more so now in a struggling economy). I think any fan with half a brain for football would agree that Tech needs some pretty specific pieces to make this triple option/flexbone offense work. So, when CPJ finds the pieces that fit together, he wants to get them committed and move to the next piece.

I respect CPJ for trying to take a hard line stance, but bottom line is Dontae just didn’t want to play quarterback… CPJ should have realized he wasn’t going to fit into their system and let it go without the negative press.

Yall are set for awhile anyway with Nesbitt and Shaw. Aycock definitely would’ve been a hell of a QB in ya’lls offense though.

To mst315. Yes it’s like telling your wife not to date anybody else once you are married to me. You are also saying, but I can still allow others to flirt with me if they show interest and I can flirt with others that are married to someone else.

With Kyle Jackson as starting Linebacker, Steven Slyvester as a true freshmen Linebacker and hopefully Anthony Williams as a star DE. Union Grove is looking more like THE Defensive breeding ground for GT
