Georgia Tech offer “in the mail” for Walton DT Kyle Woestmann
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Walton junior defensive tackle Kyle Woestmann has been told to look for a written scholarship offer from Georgia Tech to arrive soon.
“[Georgia Tech coaches] say the offer is on the way,” the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Woestmann
He holds an offer from Vanderbilt and is being recruited heavily by Alabama, East Carolina, Duke, N.C. State, Louisville and Clemson.
Woestman has been making the rounds to visit campuses.
“I went to Junior Day at Georgia Tech [on Jan. 31],” said Woestmann, who visited Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest this past weekend. “And I’m going to Alabama on Saturday.”
The Jackets are recruiting him as an offensive lineman. “I would actually like to play defensive line,” Woestmann said. “But it would be nice to get an offer from Georgia Tech, and it’s a place I would consider.
“There’s not one place I’m dead on about. I like Vandy a lot. I’m a good student and I would fit in nicely there. I’m just checking out my options.”
His recruiting coach at Alabama is Kirby Smart.
On the Crimson Tide: “Getting an offer from them would be spectacular,” he said. “I personally am a Florida fan and huge SEC person. But with any of those schools, even Vanderbilt, you’re in the SEC competing with the best of the best.
“It would be phenomenal to get an offer from Alabama.”

Brookstone TE Brian Vogler keeping close eye on Orson Charles with UGA, Florida
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Brookstone junior Brian Vogler is keeping a close eye on another tight end, Orson Charles of Tampa.
Charles is one of the nation’s top unsigned seniors. He will make his college decision after visiting Southern Cal on Feb. 20. Charles is also considering offers from Florida, UGA, Tennessee. Georgia has already signed one tight end for its 2009 class, Arthur Lynch of Dartmouth, Mass.
“If Charles ends up at UGA or Florida, I think the coaches there would be less likely to try and sign another tight end,” Volger said.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Vogler is arguably the state’s top tight end for 2010 and has eight early offers, including LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Clemson, Stanford, Duke, Kentucky and Maryland. He would not say what his top choice is, but it appears he is waiting for offers from Florida and Georgia.
“It would be really great to get an offer from a school like UGA,” he said. “But my dream school would be Florida. I lived in Tampa before moving to Columbus, and my parents and sister all went to Florida.”
He said he is a little surprised UGA hasn’t offered yet, but he thinks it may be because they are waiting to see what Charles does. “Their need for a tight end may lower if Charles decides to go to UGA,” he said. “We just have to wait and see what he does.”

Union Grove DE Anthony Williams “can see myself” playing at Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Union Grove’s Anthony Williams said he had work to do for his father Wednesday afternoon before basketball practice and wasn’t able to talk on the phone.
So the Union Grove defensive end did what many high-school juniors do. He chatted electronically.
“He has me working on the computer,” Williams said in a text message. “Working on SAT [and] ACT questions.” He also fielded questions about recruiting.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound junior said he has official offers from Georgia Tech, Stanford, West Virginia, Auburn and Central Florida. He attended the recent Junior Day at Tech and plans to attend one at Central Florida on Feb. 28.
He said his experience at the Tech visit was outstanding. “I really like Tech,” he said. “Coach [Paul] Johnson is a very good coach and I can see myself playing for him close to home familiar with some of the players.”
He said Tech is interested in playing him at DE and likes his quickness off the ball, long arms and “my passion for the game.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s leaning toward the Yellow Jackets. “Basically, I’m excited about every offer I have so far,” he said. “Every offer right now is the same.”

Chestatee RB Ben Souther vows to be patient with Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Chestatee running back Ben Souther is remaining patient. But the 6-foot, 200-pound tailback was hoping for an offer when he attended Junior Day at Georgia Tech. He talked with coach Paul Johnson.
“Coach Johnson told me to be patient, so I’m trying to be patient,” he said. “I can’t control whether a school offers or not, so there is no sense in worrying about it.”
Souther thought Tech would be the first school to offer. “The whole recruiting process can throw you a lot of surprises,” he said. “You look at a lot of other players and sometimes you are not sure what the coaches are looking for.”
Souther said he has been receiving a lot of mail from Western Kentucky and Central Florida. He said he wants to stay in the Southeast. “I want to be close to home,” he said. “I feel like the competition is better down here.”

Flowery Branch QB Connor Shaw to meet childhood idol, Steve Spurrier
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Carolina hopes to make a compelling argument on Saturday for Flowery Branch quarterback Connor Shaw to commit to the Gamecocks.
Shaw, who has scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Stanford, Wake Forest and West Virginia, is scheduled to attend Junior Day in Columbia this weekend.
He’ll have a chance to hang around one of his childhood heroes, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.
“He was my idol when I was growing up while he was at Florida,” said Shaw, whose older brother Jaybo Shaw is a quarterback for Georgia Tech. “I never thought I’d get the chance to play for him.”
Shaw, who thinks he’s close to an offer from Clemson, says he has two current front-runners.
“I’m excited about going to South Carolina this weekend,” he said. “They’re definitely a front-runner because I like the coaching staff. I don’t know much about South Carolina, but I plan on learning about them on Saturday.
“It’s between South Carolina and Georgia Tech right now.”

North Gwinnett OL JaWuan James touring Alabama, Clemson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
North Gwinnett offensive tackle JaWuan James has a simple strategy in picking the college he’ll attend and play football:
“Get out there meeting coaches and visiting,” the junior said. “I have to know where I want to be by getting out there and finding the place where I’ll be for four years.”
He’s gotten off to a fast start, with a Junior Day visit to Georgia in the books, and upcoming visits to Alabama and Clemson.
“It’s kind of crazy. It’s happening so fast,” James said of the hectic pace. “But I’m so happy and thankful they’re all interested in me.”
The 6-foot-7, 290-pound left tackle picked up his 13th offer Monday from Miami. “I talked to the O-Line coach and they’re real excited about me,” he said. “They want me down there to visit some time this spring.”
His other offers are from Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Central Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Maryland, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Florida International.

Michigan offers Gainesville QB Blake Sims
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Gainesville junior quarterback Blake Sims and wide receiver Tai-ler Jones are poised to make the Red Elephants one of the most explosive offenses in the state this fall.
That fact hasn’t gone unnoticed by college recruiters, who continue to extend scholarship offers to the talented duo.
Jones’ received an offer from Oklahoma on Tuesday morning. Sims countered with an offer from Michigan on Tuesday night.
“I think it’s great to get an offer from a school like Michigan,” said Sims, who also claimed offers from Florida International and Troy today. “If I go play for them, maybe I’ll by the guy that can lead them to a national championship.”
Jones, who also counts Georgia Tech among his many offers, plans to attend Junior Day at Alabama on Saturday, while Sims heads to Knoxville for Tennessee’s Junior Day.
“I’m looking forward to going to Tennessee on Saturday and trying to develop a relationship with the coaches,” Sims said. “Junior Day is a good time for me to go and meet [Tennessee] coach [Lane] Kiffin.”
Gainesville senior Shammond Stringer is expected to sign a letter of intent with Shorter on Wednesday.

Georgia AD Damon Evans: “We don’t need to cheat” in recruiting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
UGA athletics director Damon Evans doesn’t appear to be happy with Tennesee coach Lane Kiffin and his criticism of Georgia football.
Evans was asked about Kiffin’s comments about UGA’s recruiting efforts by the Macon Telegraph’s David Hale on Wednesday.
“We have a guy [Mark Richt] leading us who has a high level of integrity and we’re in a place where we don’t need to cheat to have success here …” Evans said.
Quick recap: Lane Kiffin said the grandmother of wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis prevented him from signing with Tennessee over Georgia. Kiffin also “denigrated UGA’s recruiting efforts in its home state” on a radio show, according to Rivals.
When Richt was asked by the AJC last week if he had a “direct response” to Kiffin’s remarks, Richt said “No thank you.”
In other UGA recruiting news, Gainesville wide receiver Tai-Ler Jones is one of the nation’s leaders in early scholarship offers with 25, but is missing Georgia and “doesn’t really know why.” Also, M.L. King tailback Mack Brown, who is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 prospect for 2010, said UGA has reserved the No. 33 jersey for him if he commits to the Bulldogs.
