Georgia AD Damon Evans: “We don’t need to cheat” in recruiting

UGA athletics director Damon Evans doesn’t appear to be happy with Tennesee coach Lane Kiffin and his criticism of Georgia football.

Evans was asked about Kiffin’s comments about UGA’s recruiting efforts by the Macon Telegraph’s David Hale on Wednesday.

“We have a guy [Mark Richt] leading us who has a high level of integrity and we’re in a place where we don’t need to cheat to have success here …” Evans said.

Quick recap: Lane Kiffin said the grandmother of wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis prevented him from signing with Tennessee over Georgia. Kiffin also “denigrated UGA’s recruiting efforts in its home state” on a radio show, according to Rivals.

When Richt was asked by the AJC last week if he had a “direct response” to Kiffin’s remarks, Richt said “No thank you.”

In other UGA recruiting news, Gainesville wide receiver Tai-Ler Jones is one of the nation’s leaders in early scholarship offers with 25, but is missing Georgia and “doesn’t really know why.” Also, M.L. King tailback Mack Brown, who is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 prospect for 2010, said UGA has reserved the No. 33 jersey for him if he commits to the Bulldogs.

Oh how adorable, little “Lame Kitten” needs constant stroking, a terrible infant he is. All that BS he is spewing is going to come back to haunt him when he’s unable to back it up on the field this Fall. You know he’s going to blame, blame, blame when things go bad, and he’ll dig, dig, dig that grave deeper, deeper, and deeper.

He reminds me of that little brat I used to kick the $hit out of, and he’d cry, and cry, but when you finally let him up, he’d start calling you names again, running from you as fast as he could.

Please don’t pick on our spoiled brat. Just because we DO have to cheat is no reason to be throwing arrows. In Kiffin’s famous words “I’m glad he had to cheat and still didn’t get him” My how those words ring true. Kiffin/Orgeron tried to cheat with M Brown and UGA still got him.

As Ed O would say Aaahhhhyayayayyayabrentschaeffaer

Funny how UT fans hated Spurrier for his antics yet love this guy except Spurrier told the truth and everything Kiffin says is a lie. Even Al Davis called him a liar. Ask SI if he lies, he lied about firing his driver. A good question would be has he told the truth about anything?

it still amazes me that tech fans come on here to brag about their one win per decade against UGA when the discussion has nothing to do with their silly little program. Lane Kiffin is starting to remind me a little of Casey Clausen. He’s running his mouth about stuff he doesn’t even know about. I remember when Clausen ran his mouth about Georgia beating UT in 2002 and he was hurt and didnt get to play and he said “If I would have been playing, we could have won by 2 touchdowns with one hand tied behind my back” Next season: Georgia: 41 / Tennessee: 14 Clausen: 2 int’s. Kiffin will be put in his place soon, just be patient.

and to the Tech fans on here: get a life. 59-39-5.

Kiffin isn’t stupid. He is trying to fire up the Vol fans by shooting off his mouth. Spurrier does this all of the time, but is a bit smarter about it. Fact is the Vol fans need some energy. They wanted Fulmer fired for at least the last 5 years and the below average performance of that team made fans forget that Tennessee had a football team. For the first time in the 17 years I have lived in Tennessee, Vol fans were just wanting football season to end so they could focus on basketball. That said, I hope Georgia kicks their Big Orange asses all over the SEC for years to come.

Just look at these silly blogs, they dig up something everyday about something Kiffin said. I challenge anyone to find anything he said about UGA cheating. His comments about Marlon Brown? Nothing at allwrong with saying grandma preffered him going to UGA. I’m sure UGA has lost guys to other schools and even for some of the same reasons, and I bet they went back and said ahhh his mom or family wanted him to go to the other school. The funny thing about all this is that the the HC of Bama, UF, UGA, and USC will probably, for the first time ever, all meet the week one of the respective teams plays UT to come up with a way to beat Kiffin by well over 100 points. Give this credit for the new coach at UT: he has created friends of some the biggest rivalries in the SEC to unite them all in a common cause to beat UT. UT fans will, unfortunately, bear the worst of this as they will find very little hospitality when they travel to visiting stadiums; and that is unfortunate because their fans, like all schools, for the most part, are good people and gracious hosts when we visit. The damage that Kiffin is doing is truly remarkable.

Notice how really good football coaches don’t respond to pip squeaks like Elaine Kiffen. They let the AD’s, fans, and alums do it. They just focus on the upcoming season and make sure that their players are too. UT fans have been down-trodden for so long that they are willing to accept “anything” that “offers” everything.Kiffen fits in perfectly for those types of fans. He’s got Left Coast mannerisms(all talk no walk), let’s his mouth fly and worries not about the consequences (just show me the money), and lastly but most importantly has no concern about the institution(UT) itself. After all, its all about him.

This will all turn next year—at least in Florida. Have read that an IRS Field Office in the Palm Beach County area has already been alerted to POSSIBLE tax problems pertaining to a Lane recruit. As you realize you MUST pay taxes on GOODS received in exchange for services rendered. If a CERTAIN kid’s relatives received a home or apartment that their REPORTED level of income would not justify, they are in trouble if it does not get reported on 09 Return. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Fans of a particular SEC team do not appear confident in NCAA handling of cheating. Therefore they may have turned to agency with bigger BITE>

You stupid, stupid Dawg fans that fell for this are playing right into the AJC’s (or is it still the KJC’s?) hands. Kiffin never said that Georgia cheated. He said Grandma wouldn’t let Marlon come. That’s it, nothing else.

Signing day was two weeks ago and the AJC is rehashing a non-story just to get website hits and blog hits. Well, I appreciate the exposure that the boys are giving Kiffin 200 miles away, but in reality, this is nothing to be riled about.

You can save the hillbilly cracks; Georgia’s loaded with ‘em, Alabama’s loaded with ‘em, and Florida’s loaded with ‘em (even though they don’t have the hills for it). You can save the cheating cracks; we’ve still committed fewer secondaries (and no majors) than a seasoned uga staff committed in the first six months of last year.

Most of all, don’t let the AJC boys jerk you around so easily. Plus, when more state of Georgia recruits starting heading back to Knoxville in bigger numbers, realize that it was the AJC fostering this fake bad boy image of Kiffin that helped turn impressionable teenage boys to the Big Orange.

Georgia has a tradition for cheating that goes back a long way and culminated with the Janice Kemp affair. Mark Richyt had brought a sense of integrity to the Dawgs, because he is a good Christian man. But, anyone would have to be pretty naive to believe assistant coaches don’t use any trick in the book to get a big name recruit. The policy is “as long as the head coach doesn’t know about it he can deny it.” This is the reality of college football.

The guy who suggested that Tech fans stay off UGA blogs is quite stupid. Have you seen the moronic dribble dawg fans write on the Tech blogs? All is fair here and elswhere.

What a bunch of crybabies. All Kiffin said is what Brown said — that the latter’s grandmother steered the player to Georgia. There is no need to talk about Georgia cheating. That has been documented for decades.

All the whining shows how soft your program is getting. In a few years, just about everyone will be scoring 45 points on the Dawgs as did GT. I think you sensitive types need to get into gymnastics and stay away from football.

In a few months, we’ll know how big or small a mess Mike Hamilton has created. It’s a new day in college athletics whether we like it or not. Maybe a bit overcast, but it’s a new day.

When did Kiffin say Richt cheated? I mean the man has said some bone-headed things, but I don’t see where he said that.

Here’s to hoping you GA people still think you are going to win a national championship, are the greatest team ever, and still win nothing! No SEC EAST, NO SEC Title, and definitely NO National Championship!

You have to love the AJC - they will post any story about Tennessee that they can find - even if they have to go to Macon to find it.

Kudos.

Georgia fans continue to make something out of nothing [Kiffin’s remarks] when what they should be doing is pushing Richt and the dogs to finally make something of the talent they have on the field.

2009 will be the same as 2008 and the years before that - the dogs fall short again.

Kiffin is making some great changes at Tennessee and in a couple of years, it will truly be noted on the field. In the meantime, the dogs will keep on wimpering…

I see a heck of a lot more ticked off Vols fans on this site than ticked off UGA fans, so I’m not sure where all these hateful remarks stem from. Most of us realize that Kiffin’s comments don’t make a difference one way or another. It’s what happens on the field that counts. Your comments are not welcome here. I realize that your local newspaper is too technologically backward to host their own blog, but I guess you’ll just have to learn to live with it.

I’ve lived in TN for a few years now. I used to pull for TN over most schools. As hateful as everyone has been toward me lately, I’m going to have to pull for FLA when they play UT next year.

Wow there are some idiots on here today. Damon Evans NEVER said that Lane Kiffin accused us Georgia of cheating. It’s not in this article anywhere. All Evans said was that we don’t need to cheat to get recruits. The in-state recruiting thing that Kiffin said was just a little jab. Kiffin said something about Mark Richt sleeping on the state of Georgia. It was childish, and also pretty ironic considering he recruited the top 2 recruits from Tennessee, but nothing to cry over. Mark Richt and Damon Evans handled the situation with class, as usual. Tech fans and Vols fans are just trying to stir the pot because they have nothing better to do with their pathetic lives. Just ignore them and they’ll probably go away. Does the AJC really not have something better to publish than this?

“Kiffin also “denigrated UGA’s recruiting efforts in its home state” on a radio show, according to Rivals. “

This statement makes it a lot more serious than the grandma thing. Kiffin is not doing himself or his team any favors with this crap he’s pulling. His predecessor was in deep because of the Alabama scenario and now he’s trying to ruffle feathers with ALL the SEC before he’s coached his first game. If I were a UT fan, I’d be saying “Oh, no!” This guy was a HUGE mistake! The SEC is tough enough without having a big grudge match every week.

In a state where your 2 most famous natives are Jimmy Carter and Gomer Pyle, it only stands to reason that you would be excited over your one year wonder football team.

History proves that Tennessee OWNS their little whipping boys…Georgia, and it will not take long for things to return to normal. And it is amazing how soon you have forgotten your a* whippung in Knoxville in 2007.

Face it bull(crap)dogs, Tech is on the rise, and Tennessee WILL return to superiority. This puts you in the middle…figuratively and literally.

Say bye bye to Bulldog recruits…and hello to future VOLS & Jackets

When the fun begins in Tennessee, Marlon Brown will be standing on the wrong sideline, and wishing that he had not made such a huge mistake!

Besides…anyone who lets GRANNY make his decisions for life has no balls anyway, and would NOT fit in Knoxville. We ONLY want real men!

Of course Kiffin knows what he’s doing. It’s a gimmick. Remember how our gimmick worked out for us? We danced in the endzone in 2007 and got drilled in 2008. It’s the same thing here. He might find short-term success with it, but in the long run, he’ll learn to shut his mouth because it won’t work out.

The only reason Brown went to Jawja was that he felt that the Tennessee QB’s could not get the ball to him. Maybe he is hoping that the freshman coming in can beat out Cox. It makes no difference because he still will not get the ball so that he can go pro after his sophomore season. He should have signed with Southern Cal and play for a real coach instead of these “me first and foremost” coaches in the SEC. This conference uses players like plantation slaves. The SEC sucks.

Are you guys to dumb to see that Kiffin is creating an “us against the world” environment for his players?? What you are NOT reading about is that CLK is pushing his kids twice as hard as Phil ever did, both athletically and academically.

The jury is out on whether Kiffin can coach and recruit. We do not know if he has the ‘knack’ of winning in the SEC.

HOWEVER, I’d be willing to bet a 100 bucks that UT does NOT quit in a game, and does NOT lay down…for anyone. Yeah, all these SEC teams are going to come in angry..so what?? They’ll be too hyped and blow their wad on the first successful play.

I see what Lane is doing, and I don’t know if it will work. UT still does not have a QB. They still need DT’s and OT’s, the base of a football team. You guys can have Marion Brown, kids like him are a dime a dozen. Give me quality linemen and I’ll kick your butt every game.

To sum up, youi UGA Maltese need to quit whining and acting like lapdogs. With your recruits, you should win the world. Hell, last year, you had Moreno, one of the greatest backs I have EVER seen, and you still could not win….take care of your own backyard, doggies, take care of your own backyard.

If I had to guess, I would imagine that you have experienced and enjoyed all of these items at some point or another. So, you’re welcome.

You can deep sea fish at 7 AM and be hiking in the mountains at 7 PM. Can’t do that in TN. Also, UT leads the series by 5 games. That doesn’t exactly qualify for ‘owning’, but good try.

This is too funny, listening to Georgia fans cry and wine, are they describing Kiffin or themselves? But I’d be angry too if I were in Georgia’s shoes. Georgia Tech (who has half the talent that Georgia has) went to Athens and put 45 on the dogs. Tech was picked to finish last in the ACC, and Georgia was picked to win the national championship. How much better is Tech’s coach to win in Athens and with half the talent? No doubt he is twice the coach that Richt is. Tennessee, Florida and Tech fans hope Richt will stay at Georgia for a very very long time. By the way, next time you see a Georgia home game on tv, listen to the fans, they sound like little girls at a Justin Timberlink concert

What the hell is this writer talking about? Brown’s Grandmother wouldn’t let him go to UT; that doesn’t mean UGA cheated and Kiffin saying that doesn’t equal accusing UGA of cheating. Also, “denigrated UGA’s recruiting efforts in its home state” on a radio show doesn’t equal accusing UGA of cheating. This has got to be the least informative piece of news I’ve ever read. This is a very old story. All Kiffin said was that Brown’s grandmother did not like the recruiting efforts by Big O and some of UT’s staff. She is a big part in Brown’s life and was one of the key factors in his decision. She liked UGA over UT. Big deal it happens all the time in recruiting. Kiffing said nothing of UGA’s recruiting or that they cheated. He only stated that his grandmother did not want him to go to UT so in that since she did prevent him from going there because she was one of the individuals Brown looked to for guidance. Now when Brown gets on the field against UT and he goes across the middle for a catch and is met by Eric Berry…then he will realize he should not have listned to grandma!

All this time I thought Auburn made the worst hiring decision in the SEC, but I have to admit now it looks like Tennessee wins the award.
Kiffin should pay more attention to the proverb: It is better to keep your mouth shut and have people wonder if you are an idiot than open your mouth and remove all doubt. I have no doubt that Richt and Garner run a completely above-board recruiting program. Perhaps Kiffin should try standup comedy as a career, he’s already made a joke of his current one. The worst part is I always thought Al Davis was the bbad guy in Oakland and did Kiffin wrong, now I’m not so sure I wouldn’t have thrown him under the bus too. Maybe Tennesses” AD can call Davis to get ssome tips on how to cut this guy loose before he makes an even bigger mess of their program. No wait, leave him there. It’ll make it even more fun to beat up on those Voluteers for the next couple of seasons.

As I’d said once before ….. when half-crazed AL DAVIS can’t stand your a$$, that pretty much tells the tale. Davis had no problem taking the dredges ( crooks ; thieves ; bad-a*******e$ ) for decades at Oakland. He basically nailed it when he called Kiffin a liar ( a la —- a sack of $hit ).

Those UT fans that are revelling in this, spouting the attention is great, ….. have joined the pathetic idiot train that is KIFFIN.

Kiffin has added some fire in the guts of many Vols fans and players. Yeah, he has said some inappropriate things, but you and everyone else will get over it. If you were making the kind of money he was, I am sure you would be saying as much as possible to boost the ego and confidence of all your players and the fan base, especially the UT donors. Your job depends on it! Really and truly, I believe that we really need to ask those people like Georgia AD Damon Evans if they need some cheese to go with that whine!?! I mean good gracious, this guy must be wearing his heart on his sleeve to get his feelings hurt so easily!?!

They (dawgs) cheated with H. Walker I know that to be the truth! I have family that worked at the university that made out payroll there was a check for the h.trophy winner She told me about it I could not believe it. The amt. was 3,000.00 a month, she felt so guilty she also said the head coach Vince Dooley ,sent boxes of liquier to his friends if that is not cheating what is? Surely that has changed I don’t think so

Get over old news. Kiffin is brash and that is why Tn fans love him. He is the polar opposite of Fulmer who 99% of the UT fans were happy to be shown the door. We are loving it that other SEC schools hate Kiffin. His goal was to be the most hated coach in the SEC….goal accomplished. He is what the younger Ole Ball Coach at Fla used to be. I hated Spurrier when he was there, and that was because he was brash and arrogant. He took shots at everyone and didn’t care what others thought. Now, it is Kiff’s time to be the hated coach. He certainly doesn’t mind p** off other schools. We no longer have a timid, politically correct coach who would go out of his way to avoid controversy. Go Vols!

Last time I checked, a coach is supposed to wait until he’s actually fielded a team that embarrassed its opponents before talking a lot of smack. Spurrier didn’t say much until he had started winning. Even he had enough sense to wait for the wins to come. Kiffin has created a situation where he has fired up all of his team’s major rivals before a season in which those teams are all better than his.

Maybe that’s what passes for “smart coaching” these days, but I think of it as the equivalent of a guy doing a dance when his team is down by four TDs.

Tennessee fans, like Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Alabama, LSU, etc. are always excited about football. Why does Kiffin have to act like an idiot to try to get fans pumped up when the excitement an support is already there? Just keep your mouth shut until you’ve actually accomplished something on the field. This guy has never had to work for anything. If I were a Vol fan I would not get my hopes up.

I won’t be back around to read any responses to this, but I have just this to say.

Be proud of your coach for his reaction. I don’t believe Kiffin said anything about UGA cheating in recruiting Brown. He basically said the grandmother was the deciding vote, and without her telling him to go to UGA, he would be a Vol. No big deal. The first thing I noticed reading this article, besides the author going out of his way to make Kiffin look bad, is that Richt had the right response — “No, thank you.” That moron at Florida should pay attention. Richt is a class act. Meyer is a whiny baby.

WOW! Lot of hate goin on today and its freaking February. Can’t wait till September. I can’t even imagine all the trashtalking then. Good luck to the dawg, vol, and gator fans.

The only thing I have to say about Kiffin is that he has plenty of time to trash talk. But it would probably just behoove him to wait till he actually wins some games before running his mouth.

Personally I like the guy. He is a comedian wearing coaching attire. He is refreshing. You now always wonder what this guy is gonna say next that’s going to crack you up. Its like you wake up in the morning, get your coffee, log on or read the newspaper, and you just grin from ear to ear when you read what this guys is saying or doing next.

Too many other people on here for some reason let Kiffin bother them. I don’t see why. I just recognize him for the comedic relief he provides.

Vol fans think everyone is in fear of him for some unknown reason. Interesting but not quite true. Judging by his 5-15 record as a head coach I think most rivals of UT like myself are ecstatic that he is the vol head coach. I’m happier with him at UT then I am with Chizik at Auburn. Anyway, I toast to Lane Kiffin and here is one Bama fan hoping he will be around for a long time and 2-3 years at least.

Coach Richt had the appropriate answer, your AD should have as much sense. Kiffin knows exactly what he is doing, not withstanding all of your crying on this blog. Do any of you really want to beat Tennessee any more now that before Kiffin? Where you really going to try to “keep it close” because he was a nice guy like Fulmer? I don’t think so. 2008 SEC Record 17-2 ATS.

Just so you know my credentials.

I hate to disappoint the Georgia fans, but I racked up on your early season #1 ranking. Stafford and Moreno were overhyped, but they were your best offensive weapons, now they are gone.

Prediction, UT finishes 2nd to UF in the SEC East. Just thought I would throw that out for all the Kiffin doubters.

I’m an unbiased 3rd party just trying to shed some light on the subject. UT will drop games at Alabama and at Florida, other than that they will run the table. Their QB’s are better than people think, they just didn’t have anyone to coach them last season. If Monte Kiffin stays their defense will be the second coming of the steel curtain within 3 years, as it is, they will be vastly improved in the upcoming season.
For you UGA fans, you won’t have the offense to beat UT next year. 2010 will be a better year for the Dawg.

I see some of you UGA fans are comparing records with Georgia Tech fans. If you have any guts let me see you post Tennessee’s record against UGA the last thirty years. If I’m not mistaken Fulmer (prior to the last five years) has owned all SEC teams except Florida.

In addition, LK obviously knows his comments will not cause his team to lose one game. He is attempting to get his team fired up. And it will work because he will beat Georgia in Knoxville this year.

Also, Tennessee won the eastern division prior to last year. When’s the last time UGA won the eastern division. UGA did not win the eastern division with an all american running back and a greaat quarterback. What makes you thing you will do better without them.

There is one big difference between the two programs. Tennessee is striving to win the NC while UGA is satisfied with losing two, three, and four games each year.

When was the last time we won the SEC east? Well, we won the SEC championship in 2005… When was the last time Tennessee could say that? Even when they DID when the SEC east last UGA was STILL ranked higher and went to a BCS bowl. That’s pretty rough, Vols fans. Look, I know you’re disappointed about your 5-7 record, including losses to Georgia and WYOMING, but there reeeeally has to be something better you can do with your lives. If these ignorant posters would actually read the article, they would realize that Damon Evans never once said that kiffin had accused UGA of cheating. I didn’t realize how much unrest UGA fans have until recently. We UT fans can identify, we haven’t had a good team since 2004. You know, UGA is the only SEC school with six straight top 10 recruiting classes. As bad a game day coach as Fulmer was, he beat UGA 3 of the last 5 with inferior talent. Who gives a flying sh* about Elane or the viles. Both are second rate. The only reason Elane hired his dad, where he could make all the tough decisions. I’m enjoying watching the viles in a big cluster*. This past season was very amusing. I laughed all year @ utk and their joke football squad. Any 4a Georgia high school squad could have beaten them, LOL. What is so funny is that the people of tennerssee don’t even know how to play the game of football, with a d1 player coming out once every lunar eclipse. Georgians made tennerssee football what it is today, LOL.
