Banneker’s Shawn Kitchens reflects on Georgia Tech offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Banneker’s Shawn Kitchens is strongly considering Georgia Tech after getting an early offer from his hometown school.
“Last Thursday, me and my mother went back [to Tech] to talk about the scholarship offer,” the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Kitchens said. “It means a lot to get an offer from Georgia Tech.”
“I put in a lot of work. For them to offer me like that, it shows that the hard work is paying off.”
Kitchens, who plays quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker, safety and returns kicks for Banneker, also holds offers from Ole Miss, Kentucky and West Virginia.
He plans to attend upcoming Junior Days at Clemson, Kentucky, Michigan and N.C. State. Though the recruiting process is just beginning for Kitchens, the Jackets are one of his early favorites.
“Georgia Tech has the advantage right now because of location and academics,” he said. “But I’m not going to commit early. I’ll look at my different options.
“I’ll [likely] make my decision on signing day.”

Shawn, take your time. Other colleges are sure to call. Keep this in mind about the fan base at Georgia Tech:
Georgia Tech ranked No. 48, drawing 47,489 per game, down 5.5 percent from 50,280 in 2007.
You have your best season in years and attendance DROPS?!?!

Joshua, with the exception of the 1990 “split” MNC, you (and perhaps your parents) weren’t even born the previous time tech supposedly won one. TVs and telephones began populating the country at about that time. Other notables: indoor bathrooms, freezers, teflon……

Funny he mentions academics after saying “me and my mother.” LOL, didn’t he mean “my mother and I? Sounds like he just the type of “student athlete” Yech prides themselves in. I wonder if he can actually piece together a complete sentences unlike Michael Johnson? LOL!!!!!!

Windows_shut, Maddog, RY:
Remind me again about how many UGA recruits this year may not be eligible to enroll this fall due to academics. Wasn’t it something like 6 out of 18?
Which school had the class for athletes that asked how many points for a 3-point field goal in basketball? That sure was not Tech.
So the kid said my mother and me instead of my mother and I. Big deal.
What I do know about academics is that my son’s ACT scores put him in the top 10% at UGA, and the top 25% at GT. So which school has the better ACT scores in their incoming freshman? It sure isn’t UGA.
By Windows_shut

Bob,
UGA is at least honest with their academics. Remind me again how many “student athletes” Tech had to kick out of school a few years ago for receiving passing grades in classes they were failing? 15? 20?
Remind me again about the difference between the two schools for admitting student athletes? Oh that’s right, each use the same NCAA minimum standard. Remind me again which school turns away more incoming freshmen each year? Oh that’s right, it’s UGA.
Sad any parent would have to stoop as low as using their own child as leverage on an internet blog. But then again, you are a Tech fan.

This all has to do with the number of fans from visting teams. The number of Tech fans likely was the same, but when you bring in Jax State, Gardner-Webb, and Duke, your attendance is not going be there.

poor Saddog (aka RealityYech) truly pathetic, making up names on the blog to carry on a conversation with. Geez, saddog has more personalities than Herschel.
Even more pathetic is she can’t beat GT in anything so all the she has to do is spell check everybody’s blogs. What a loser, “me” or “I” on a football blog. I kind of feel sorry for you.
Well, At least she’s putting that journalism degree form UGAg to work better than most of the other graduates from there.
The attendance dropped due to the Gardner Webb game. Who by the way, give us a much better battle than the fleabags in Athens 45-42.
My question is if UGAg played Gardner Webb would it be a 45-45 tie, or a 7-7 tie? LMAO!!!

So Maddog….lets take away the “shared” championship of 1990 (which Colorado cheated with the 5 down play to even be in consideration) we still have 3 National Championships. So now we take away the UGA “shared” title of 1942 and that leaves your doggies with 1, way back in 1980, so dont talk like you have titles in this era to brag about!

Colorado played a champions schedule in 1990, while Tech played a Parkview HS schedule, at best. Colorado played 4 teams that finished in the top 12, Tech played one. Colorado played a real team in a real bowl game, while Tech played Colorado’s leftovers in a bowl that doesn’t even exsist anymore.

Maybe attendance dropped because season ticket prices were increased last year for a large percentage of the available seats as more sections became “donation required” seats.

how hard for all the georgie geese is it now that their football team was emasculated in all its big showdowns this past year, tech ended the streak, is obviously starting their own streak, owns the longest streak in the series, owns more national titles, owns a more recent national title, is a media darling compared to a national joke and has a coach that does not poop his pants in big games.
oh wait…what am i talking about…i almost forgot how bad our attendance numbers are. that really bums me out when people knock our football team because of attendance because it is so important to me. when i am down on the flats on a bright sunny fall day, with the backdrop of atlanta behind the scoreboard sipping a jack and coke watching the jackets i sure am miserable because i wish we had more people in the stadium.

Georgia Tech’s football players had the nation’s best average SAT score, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0 in the core curriculum.
http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/stories//2008/12/28/acadmain12283DOT.html
UGA special admit percentage for athletes 73.5. GT special admit percentage for athletes 6.2. I.E. if there are 75 players on the roster, 55 of UGA’s 75 didn’t even qualify to get into the school, where as only 4 of Techs 75 didn’t qualify. UGA should be ashamed for exploiting the athletes. College is supposed to be about getting an education first, athletics second. Clearly GT gets it, UGA does not. No wonder UGA has significantly better recruiting most years than GT…THEY WILL LET ANY DUMB HAY SEED ON THE TEAM, if they can ball it up!!!

Based upon ESPN News today (2-17-09), there will always be opportunities at UF. Just so the recruit doesn’t mind playing with thugs and felons. ESPN: “Florida Gators offensive lineman Carl Johnson was arrested on Monday and charged with violating a domestic violence restraining order. Johnson, who will be a junior next season, is the fourth Florida player to be arrested in the past 10 months. Safety Jamar Hornsby was arrested on felony credit card fraud charges last May, cornerback Jacques Rickerson was arrested on felony battery charges last November, and quarterback Cam Newton was arrested on felony burglary charges last November.”
These guys almost have GT beat in the felony arrest category.

Funny how Tech fans tout their “student” athletes SAT scores, but never talk about their majors or how many actually graduate. You brag that you’re an engineering school yet how many of your “student” athletes actually major in an engineering program? I find it odd that Atlanta has one of the worst school systems in the nation, but at the same time its a hot bed for Tech to get their “student” athletes. We all went to high school and had classes with standout athletes. We all had coaches who “taught” classes. If Tech is great at anything, it’s their ablility to hide, in unison with their farm system high schools, the sheer stupidty of their “student” athletes. All it takes is to listen to one interview of any of these Tech kids and you realize it’s all a sham. So congrats Tech on being able to cheat better than anyone else! I salute you!

NCBravesFan, are you that stupid? Did you read your post? You said not to talk until you have titles in this era. If, as you said, you remove the 1990 shared MNC, then your previous title was 1952. I believe 1980 is closer to “this era” than the all-white GT 1952 team. What a toad!!
Also, Colorado didn’t “cheat”, as you like to put it. The refs blew the call. Neither coach caught the error. It’s not like Colorado “planned” to cheat no more than Tech did when the refs said Sanks fumbled the ball in 1999 when replays clearly showed his knee was down before the fumble. Mistakes are made. It’s part of the game. Get over it!

And how did Virginia finish that year? Funny how the douchebags will rip on UGA for being a busted, overrated number 1 team but can’t seem to hold UVA from 1990 to the same light.
Colorado played 3 conference champions that year, Tech played Z-E-R-O
Btw, I’d be willing to bet any given year Parkview would have played more than ONE team that finished in the top 12 of their division. ::wink::

Hey Maddog- How many of those 92,000 actually attended the school? Take away the loser, hanger-on rednecks that claim to the part of the “Dawg Nation” just because they like to bark and drink cheap beer on Sat, and you probably got about 40,000 actual alumni and students of UGA at the game.
As far as Colorado in 1990, they didn’t cheat, the refs screwed up, but if we had five downs against UNC, we would have been 12-0 and it would have been moot. Water under the bridge, still a National title.

Tech fans would kill to have a fraction of the “Walmart” UGA fans. Trying to belittle the largest fan base in the state is as jealous as you get.
I think a tie in the second of half the season against a pathetic, BOWL-LESS UNC team is worse than a one point loss, third game of the season, on the road against a BOWL BOUND Illinois team.
There will always be a little “*” next to the Tech shared title with a better team from 1990. Pointing this fact out enrages the bomb makers from North Ave. :)

I sit back here, day after day, reading your garbage; all of you acting like you’ve accomplished something special on behalf of the Universities you supposedly support.
How many of you blowhards claiming allegiance to these Teams have actually suited up and Lettered for them? Heck how many of you have played a down of Varsity ball, much less? Probably none of you.
Those of us who have, and yes, I’m a Letterman from GA Tech from way back, regardless of the teams we participated with, UGA, the University of Florida, Alabama, Notre Dame, or even the Service Academies, have been through what these kids have been through and know how tough it was for us.
But now, it’s even worse for them because they have to put up with the likes of all of you. Sure, they get more “positive” exposure, but that’s only for the “stars” and the ones who seek publicity. For most of these kids, all they want is a chance to play ball at the next level and get a good education.
These kids relish the chance to play for their favorite school, but also get disappointed when they don’t get the offer they’re hoping for. They don’t need your insults heaped on top of them as well. It’s paramount to your child trying to get into UGA, not to play football, but just to go to College, and they are rejected for whatever reason; grades, the class is full, whatever. How would you like to have a web blog chatting about you, or your child’s, attempts at getting into College?
How about your attempt at getting a new job? What if all of your attempts were posted on a blog for the world to see and comment on? Everyone knows you may or may not be recruited for a position. Everyone will know whether you got an offer or not. Everyone will know whether you chose their Company or decided to take a “competitor’s” offer. How would that make you feel?
Cut these kids some slack.

Hey Ssbraves fan. How moorons like yourslf seem to forget how the refs gave Colorado 5 downs to score against Missouri on the goal line. Colorado lost that game fair and square.
