UGA “slow to offer” state’s juniors, compared to out-of-state schools

Georgia is very cautious and calculated about recruiting the state’s top juniors. UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner explained the reasons:

“We try to do a very thorough job of evaluating every kid in this state that we feel like has the opportunity to be a D-I player,” he said.

“And we really try to double-check and re-check just to see how they may fit into our [scholarship] numbers and our system. We’re slow to offer, compared to the out-of-state schools. Those schools don’t come back every year. They only have to show up when there’s a great player.”

“So we’re going to make sure when we pull the trigger and offer a kid, if that kid commits, then we’re going to be committed to him and not pull back the scholarship or anything like that. We have to be more thorough, and it forces us to be a little slower sometimes.”

I am sure kids get a little antsy and disappointed waiting on the UGA offer. Perhaps they do not see the big picture of what UGA does. Some of the current trends in recruiting are troublesome (oversigning, pulling offers, etc). I think over time,UGA’s reputation and how they recruit will speak for itself and when a kid gets an offer from UGA it will meant something. It will not be just another letter thrown in the backseat of the car.

That is why teams can sign 39 players in one class(i.e. Ole Miss) and hope 25 make it to campus. You see a good player…..offer him. What the heck, let’s just hope he makes it!! I like Georgia’s philosophy.

Lane Kiffin pulled THREE offers this year after kids committed. You can argue semantics all you want, but he told them they werent wanted. I have NEVER seen CMR do that, and doubt I ever will. According to Rivals this year, UGA had the fourth highest rated class by player rankings in the country. I will take that every year. Ambles, you know its you they are taking about, you can wait on a UGA offer or you can strut like peacock, it matters not.

My only problem is that it seems like we are just as fast to offer out of state talent as the every other team. Take Markeith Ambles out of Henry County. A lot of people feel he might be the top recruit in the country (last time we had a receiver around who they said that about his last name was Green) and UGA is one of the only schools he is considering that hasn’t offered. Now, we have offered WRs out of FL, VA, and LA, but not the one out of GA who is reputed to be the best of the bunch. I am not an insider and I don’t know the details, but it seems like we should give as many early offers to the guys in state if they are good enough. Just my two cents.

I don’t want UGA to rush their offers. But I hope they will COMMUNICATE with the kids and express some interest right away. At the end of this year, UGA was scrambling to find one more wide receiver and called up all these kids at the last minute. They need to get lots of kids in for visits next year, so if they offer a last-minute scholarship, the kids have already gotten a good look at the program.

DeployedDawg, UGA has already offered an in-state WR (Antonio Goodwin out of Atlanta).

If you have kept up with UGA recruiting you should know by now that since Richt has been the coach that UGA does not throw offers around like they are $1 bills. For the entire year they might offer 45 or less kids so you can see what Coach Garner says makes it imperative that UGA does their homework and focuses on areas of highest priority. I don’t expect that UGA will ever have a (so called) #1 recruiting class due to this fact. It’s not about just running numbers ala Bama, UT and then letting the kids weed themselves out (no pun intended UT) by either not qualifying or having to prep first before entering.

UGA right now has just over 34 offers out. 9 of those are on instate recruits. That is a small percentage, but as garner said they must be careful in who they offer. UGA has more requirements than other schools like alabama and unlike Saban for instance Richt will not oversign. He can’t do a saban and tell a recruit to go elsewhere since he isn’t wanted any longer. I am not putting down Saban, but he just does things differently.

Are you guys for real? Classes don’t mean anything….have you seen what the Dawgs have done the last 5 years? Half of their class doesn’t even hit the field….coaches matter when they hit college. Worry about things when they hit campus….ratings don’t mean a thing. Coaches are the main thing and CMR is the real deal….Paul Johnson? Really? They will figure him out soon enough……Tickle Pile Tools!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recruitnik, thank you for the numbers. I know that we are a national brand, but our championship teams have been built on GA talent. I know we can’t offer everyone, but it seems like we hold off longer on in-state talent than we do out of state talent. It is almost as if we are saying “We know we can get the in-state guys, so we will wait to offer.” Why put up a fence if we are going to let other folks in early. They know more than me on the issue (and a lot of you guys probably do also), but I don’t want them taking GA kids for granted.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. That is all we ever hear from Richt and Garner as it relates to recruting in the state of Ga. Everytime they lose a top recruit in state they come up with another rediculous excuse. I think Kiffen at Tenn. was right about UGA coaches being lazy in their recruiting in state players. They sit over there in their ivory tower and take this holier than god attitude with in state players, and they think they can wait until the last second to offer these recruits, and that all of them will wait on Richt and his pathetic, arrogant, coaches to offer them.Micheal Bowman, and Stephen Hill are 2 examples of last years class that would both be UGA signees if these pompous lazy coaches that UGA has would have offered them earlier. Now the top player in the state is going to leave again, because Richt and Garner have to continue to evaluate him. Give me a break, they have offered several out of state players, guess the same doesn’t apply to them when it comes to out of state players. They have time to evaluate out of state players, more than in state. Just another excuse from these losers, and this is why UGA will never win another SEC title as long as Richt is in charge. He and his coaches get out worked, and out recrutied time and time again. Let me remind all of you blind UGA fans, this pathetic staff was 1 for 8 closing the top 8 recruits on their board. If they were in sales at a top company, they would lose their jobs. With Richt, he justs continues to support them and make excuses for them. Hill, Kenney, Jones, Reid,Starling,Massie,Charles(being out recruited as we speak by Meyer and the clown Kiffen). Losing all of the above players is why UGA will never be on top again, and this year it seems it is going to be even worse. None of the top juniors have committed to UGA early, and it has nothing to do with evaluating talent, it has everything to do with kids not wanting to play for Richt, and his coaches, and the fact that his coaches are getting out recrutied again this early for 2010

1953, you seem to know what you are talking about when it comes to Billy Graham and his staff. He will never face reality when it comes to his coaches or when it comes to himself. As far as being out recruited in state. It happens every year. 1out of 8 seems to be the average for these losers when it comes to closing on top talent. UGA fans will listen to Billy Graham no matter what he spews out at them.2 SEC titles in 10 years will be all they talk about while, their rivals in the SEC, LSU and Fl, both have 2 national championships in that time frame. That is the mentality of UGA fans, and that is why Richt is their savior, and he can do no wrong. He is a joke, and for UGA to settle for 3rd best in SEC the last 8 years is pathetic. HOw good do you think UGA would be if they could recruit. How about these great players in state 2 years ago(Berry(Tenn.),Burnett(Ga.Tech),Dwyer(GaTech),Nesbit(GaTech),Bailey(Miami),Heyward(OhioSt). OPPS!!, Forgot UGA and it’s wonderful coaches got King. One for eight again.Richt and his coaches are terrible, and they cant recruit the top talent in the state. All of UGA’s problems on defense would have been solved with Berry&Burnett at s.s, and f.s. Defensive end would be solved with Bailey, and Heyward, and running back would be solved with Dwyer. Add to that Jarvis Jones, Reid, and Starling, and UGA would have the best defense in the SEC. But, with the coaches they have, and the way they recruit, UGA has the 11th best defense in the SEC. Bottomline, terrible coaches, terrible recruiting, equals UGA. You keep smiling Richt and Garner, your ship is sinking very fast. S.C. has caught UGA in talent, and Tenn. will pass them with Kiffen and his staff. HOw does 4th place in East sound to you blind UGA fans. Get accustomed to it, and can’t wait to hear Richt and Garner say can’t get them all. HOw about can’t get any of them. That should be UGA’s motto from now on.

Josh Nesbitt, who cares? LMAO!! ROFL!! Josh Nesbitt can’t go 50% against air. He’s horrible. Jonathan Dwyer? UGA doesn’t need lumbering backs like Dwyer that have no cutting or pass blocking ability. Dwyer would be a fullback at UGA.

38-3 little Tech girls.

Seriously…1953 and who cares.

Just look at rankings of the kids that UGA secures in-state year-after-year. UGA dominates in-state recruiting. Also, UGA gets its’ share of out-of-state recruits as was evident this past year when we pulled the top 2 kids out of Tennessee. Obviously you two are delusional.

The formula for our recruiting works extremely well.

As Garner said, UGA has to be careful about offering the in-state kids.

At this point, only the most elite have been offered. That’s the smart approach.

On Ambles…there are reasons he has not been offered, and none of them have anything to do with his play on the field. Richt and he will meet tomorrow to discuss whether Ambles’ past off-the-field transgressions are something we can get past our admittance committee…you know, the same one that denied Chaney and Grant in the past.

Southern Cal can come in and offer Ambles, then pull it later if they decide his past is an issue. UGA does not have that luxury…hell, we’ve basically been blackballed at Stephenson thanks to the Grant fiasco…it’s a matter of our coaches going through due process and doing the right thing for UGA and these players.

MoDog (learn how to spell D-O-G), Lets look at these kids you get each year. A third end up at Hargrave to EARN the grades to get into the C’pool. Another third, end up in the Clark County jail before the first game, and the last third, actually see the field.

And your so called formula involves envelops of cash and the promise of a great degree in “Lawn Maintenance”.

Which school looks desperate (hint: the one that recruits players before they know how they are doing academically)? It speaks for itself. Poor techies, your coach has to run around begging while ours takes his picks of the litter. Where were you ranked in recruiting? 30 or 40 something, I think.

By DogsAreDumb

February 16, 2009 7:34 PM | Link to this

Preston, you have no clue what you’re talking about. Tech recruits players who they know have a good chance succeeding both on the field and in the classroom. St. Richt on the other hand recruits anything with a pulse, and when he can’t get them on a straight admit into school, ships them off to Hargrave where they miraculously obtain grades good enough to qualify them for university level (if you can call the education you get at the c’pool that) work. Most of your recruits are sweating the SAT requirements.

Geathers was rumored to announce today but then decided not to. Probably in the next few days.

Orson Charles is supposively waiting until the first week of March after basketball is over.

I can’t complain about UGA recruiting results. We get solid players all around all the time. Now we just need to find a pass rush on defense, add some blitzing, and execute in the red zone on offense.
