USC-bound Jarvis Jones says he “didn’t want to be close to home”

Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones talked to the AJC about the recruiting process and why he chose Southern Cal over UGA, LSU, Texas and Florida:

Q. Why USC? A. It’s a great program, and I’m going to be coached by a great linebackers coach in [Ken Norton Jr]. He is one of the best to play the game. I’m going to learn how to play football at the next level. And being able to play under coach Pete Carroll is an excellent opportunity. I know they will be able to improve my chances of getting into the NFL, which has always been my dream. It’s every kid’s dream who plays football.

Q. What happened with UGA? A. I just didn’t want to be that close to home. I’m very thankful to UGA for offering me a scholarship and spending so much time with me. It was hard to tell them no because the coaches and I developed a great relationship. It got to a point where we didn’t even talk recruiting. We would just laugh about other stuff, but I knew I couldn’t go wrong at USC.

Q. What did you learn about yourself through this entire recruiting process? A. It was a great process. I stayed true to what I was going to do. I said I was going to take all my visits and I did. I stayed humble, and I got to meet a lot of good people. The support I received from my coaches, my principal and the people I met is one of the main reasons why it all went so well.

Q. What advice can you give to juniors who will be going through this process next year? A. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Everyone will tell you how good you are, but there is always room for improvement. Take all your visits so you make the best decision for you.

Q. Everyone gets homesick. Any fears of being 3,000 miles from home? A. I’m a lot different than other people. I’m focused on trying to do what’s best for me no matter how far I have to go.

Q. What are your future plans? A. Right now I’m focusing on my career in college. I want to study broadcasting and journalism, maybe even education. I would like to coach one day and give back to the kids like people have done for me.

Congrats Jarvis on USC. I’m glad you didn’t sign w/Georgia. You lost points with me when you elected to have early wrist surgery and miss your high school teams playoff games so you could heal in time to play in Under Armour. Wth? Then you didnt play in that game because of that same wrist injury. You should’ve been loyal to your boys at Carver H.S. not some lame all star game.

I’m glad this guy went West too as he already thinks he’s Hollywood. We don’t need any more mercenaries at UGA as we just got rid of two big ones. I’m feeling good about the spirit of next year’s team—sounds like we’ve got some winners with real G men like Joe Cox and Jeff Owens… Let Jarvis Jones run with the 90210 crowd!

LOL! You are quite frankly a dumb punk. Stafford and Moreno are mercenaries because they decided to leave. Stafford would have been a damn fool to stay. He’s going to be the #1 draft pick idiot. And Moreno is a high to mid first round pick.

You know, I really need to think about what I write in the future on these blogs. I need to be a better person and not write anything that insults a player, collete or pro, or another blogger. Sometimes I break down from reading so much negative stuff and write something negative myself. But, after reading some of the things people have written here about a great kid who made a wise decision that is best for him, I promise never to write anything personally negative about a person again on a blog. I will just communicate my thoughts in a more positive manner, as I alsways should. I hope plenty of more of you will join me and dedicate ourselves to more intelligent conversation…even if you hate the Gators with all your might. I really tire of the “gayturds” type of comments, etc. If you graduated from college, you should have better vocabulary.

This guy must never want his family to watch him play. You know they can’t go to California every other weekend to where if he would have stayed closer to home they would get to see him play if not in person at least on tv. Whether it was at UGA , FLA, or LSU he would be on tv at a descent hour now it will be after 11:00 on some far out channel just next to the porn channel.

DC Dawg, I don’t really think Stafford was a “mercenary.” He had love for Mark Richt and for GA long before he graduated high school. He says he will remain a lifelong Bulldog fans and will watch as many games as he can; I believe him. By the way, I would like to point out that USC’s players often leave early for the NFL, and that doesn’t stop USC from winning. I think it’s possible for guys to play “team” football even if they’re planning to leave early.

Good luck and good riddance i wouldnt have cared who he chose but i hate and i do mean hate those f* over there in southern california because they cheat and schedule weak opponents every year then expect a chance to play for a nat’l title?…. I hope Georgia gets to meet them in the nat’l title game sometime soon hopefully while ole jarvis Jones is riding their bench that way the whole world will finally see that pac 10 football is weak and they will shut their mouth about the SEC. So jarvis have fun playing no name teams such as san jose state, washington state, washington, arizona, stanford and ucla. Those are some great teams and even better rivalries.

Jarvis sounds like he has a very clear idea about who he is and what he wants to do in life. I wish he would have been happy to stay home and play at UGA, but I can’t blame him for following his dream to USC.

That being said, I can’t help but think that he may have a case of the “grass is always greener” syndrome. If he would look at the numbers he might find his odds of making the NFL are just as good coming out of Athens as Los Angeles (which is an armpit of a place in my opinion).

Just remember, Home is where the heart is! I have a strange feeling you are going to run into some “other people” out there, and I hope you understand they can’t be dealt with in the same way! Reality, You are right. Pups will be pre-season Nat’l Champs. Kinda like this year right?

By The Simple Truth

February 15, 2009 2:11 AM | Link to this

The previous poster is right: this kid is a self-centered mercenary. And even though a player like that can help you win, they can also help you lose. Football is a team game and self-centered prima donnas can be more trouble than they’re worth.

And yes, Stafford was a mercenary. Moreno might have had a more valid reason for going pro because the injury risk is much higher for a running back and the career span of a running back in the NFL is about 10 years or less these days. But for Stafford…let’s face it…he cared a lot more about getting a big payday than he did for accomplishing any goals as a Georgia player (or even improving his own play with another year…he’s more content with having a chance at the number one draft position by virtue of a weak year for QBs). He was a great talent who in the final analysis wasn’t a particularly team-oriented guy and didn’t bring any titles to Athens despite all the hype.

So with Jarvis Jones…this kid already has stars in his eyes and can’t stop thinking about NFL bling-bling even though he hasn’t played a down in college. Most of his choices so far indicate that he’ll be loyal to himself ONLY and that’s not the type I would want on my team.

By TCM

February 15, 2009 2:55 AM | Link to this

And that’s why you don’t have a team SIMPLE TRUTH. You’re too busy bashing kids for the decisions they make which they have to look out for themselves and their families. I felt STAFFORD could have benefited from his senior year but he chose to leave a year early, get over it! Being the #1 overall pick is a good reason to leave early if that’s what you’re going to do. JJONES has the right to choose any school he wants to, just like any other kid coming out of HS. And besides, you can’t play LB with a bad wrist, which is like only playing with one arm. You people really need to get a life with some of these stupid comments!!

Some of you people need to get a life! What do you care where some 18 year old goes to college. From reading his comments, it sounds like he is a thoughtful young man with a good head on his shoulders. I am a Bulldog fan too and would have loved to have seen in Athens, but he thought USC was a better fit for him. Fine by me.

And as far as 7 Stafford and Moreno go, look they don’t get paid to do what they do in college. You can argue all you want about free education and blah, blah, blah, but the fact of the matter is if you had the kind of money waiting on you that this two kids had waiting on them you would jump to the NFL too.

Some of you seem to expect more loyalty from these kids than you show them in your comments. Why not just thank them for their service to the university, which reaped millions of dollars from those services while they where there, and wish them well in their future endeavors.

As for Stafford and Moreno leaving early. The Money is just to hard to turn dowm. Any recruit staying more than 3 years is a blessing. Gators thought we had a good shot as well. I liked the way he handled his visits. He didn’t lead anyone on nor did he commit at every stop. He took his visits and then made his decision. Who can find fault with that? Best wishes to the young man at USC. He chose an excellent program.

Do you notice that everytime a player talks about coaching(i.e. jarvis jones) they talk about their position coach how good they are, etc., and everytime anyone talks about other coaches, example Kiffen talking about Saban and Myer getting ahead of him no one every puts Richt into the equation? The other coaches never talk about Richt because they know he is not a threat because he can’t win the big game. He is definitely a second tier coach in the SEC.

I think Jarvis picked an excellent school. Georgia fans shopuldnt be sour. It all boils down to coaching. The top coaches get the top players. I hope the Georgia coaching staff learned from their mistakes last year. We had a lot of coaching errors and it showed in all of the games. Willie and who ever is coaching the special teams better have a better year than they had last year. They will def be fired. If O State scores more than 30 point even if we win Willie will be under the gun again.

Coaching issues this year for UGA? Ummmm…yeah all over the place. Maybe with Stafford gone I wont have to watch us call the long-ball on first down every damn possession. Maybe we can get back to being a run-first team. Do you guys realize that Knowshon only had like 19 carries per game this year? WTF is that all about. I’m happy with the ‘09 class. I would of have like to sign more DT though. Abry Jones is hinted he could play right away. Derrick Lott might too. I heard that Brandon Wood might take a medical hardship this season. That leaves us with Jeff Owen, Geno Atkins, Kade Weston.. he’s gotta have big year, Ricardo Crawford and DeAngelo Tyson. We need more big bodies at 3T.. due to injury bug bit us last season.

I read the words mercenary and self centered and I dont see how they relate to Jones other than the face he didnt choose to be a Dog and reading this stuff, who can blame him. The kid kept quiet the entire time, he didnt make a spectacle out of his recruitment, never led one team on and didnt disrespect any school that recruited him (except of course for UGA by choosing USC) and some of your ridiculous people are trashing him. We welcome an outstanding linebacker prospect to USC! We lost our 3 senior linebackers this year and I am sure Coach Carroll and Coach Norton ‘went looking’ for linebackers! This past year, ‘Our’ starting defensive left end was from Georgia, we loved him! Has it occured to anyone that USC wanted Jarvis Jones, and went and got him?? Obviously the USC coaching staff thought he was an outstanding player because we seldom mess around with wimps and loosers and people like that! I also believe that Stafford and Moreno did the correct thing by turning pro, we loose players all the time to the NFL, that should tell you something about USC’s program, and we may well loose Jarvis too…and I hope he is that good! USC FAN IN OREGON,

Why don’t you come play some SEC teams for a non/con schedule. I guess Ok State, ASU, and Ga Tech are a bunch of patsies.

As far as Jarvis, good luck, and he made the best decsion for himself at the time. Anyone making any deragotory comments about recruits going elsewhere, has no reason to call themselves UGA fans

Go Dogs, Good Luck Jarvis, and maybe he will make his goals.

Good Luck : Jarvis, Greg, Bobbie, Starling and all the other recruits I’ve watched over the last ten years make signing day a f*king joke. I personally hate this sht where kids want this number or early playing time, etc. Hey, give me guys who work their a* off and play like a five star for sixty mintues. I love college football, but watching some of these recruits hold the camera until the fans and coaches really don’t give a sh*t where they go is for the birds.

“gett real, people. Why would any kid turn down USC to go to UGA ?

Careful with that logic there, gnat. If everyone thought that way, NATS would never get any in-state talent.

reading these negative comments from yahoos who never had the talent to play this kids game, I dont blame these kids for picking their schools anywhere and anyway they can. Its a shame to provide a forum where so many who have no impact on this program other than spout all this negatism about some high school kids. I am a bulldog fan but it is true that UGA is a dumber school than GT no matter who wins each year.

TampaGator, Nice sentiments, but I suggest that you not read past the comments line in the future. You will never change the dawgnation that responds on these blogs. They are completely hopeless homers that would have been blowing sunshine up this kid’s butt if he had signed with uga. Just look at how they treated the Hill kid from Miller Grove that was wavering on his commitment to Tech. When he was considering uga (both times) they were telling him how great he was, he would be the next Hines Ward, and how he would never catch a ball an only block at Tech. Well, obviously he decided to come to Tech afterall and both time the ugaers showed their true colors (GREEN) and completely bashed the kid.

They are homers & haters. Read the comments that some have made about Stafford & Moreno…they are throwing them under the bus.

disclaimer: I realize that not all dawg fans are this way, but the ones that respond below the comments line tend to be moreso than others.

THWg!
