Orson Charles may wait until March for college decision

One of the nation’s highest-ranked seniors who has yet to sign is still considering UGA and may wait until early March to make his college decision.

Tight end Orson Charles of Tampa will announce after returning from an official visit to Southern Cal on Feb. 20, and is also considering UGA, Florida and Tennessee. He is ranked as the country’s No. 62 overall prospect by Rivals.

“The plan is, when I get back from Southern Cal, I’m going to narrow down to two schools,” Charles told the AJC.

“Then I’m looking at deciding on Feb. 27 or March 6. That way, I’ll get back from USC, and have some time to talk with my family and my pastor about everything. That’s the plan, right now.”

Charles said he has been “asking a lot of questions” to both college coaches and players from his four finalists. “This decision affects the rest of my life. I’m doing my homework, finding out as much as I can to make the best decision … The [four colleges] have been patient and understanding with me, and say to take as much time as I need to figure things out.”

Earlier in the week, Charles called UGA coach Mark Richt to clear up some concerns. Quarterback Aaron Murray, who was teammates with Charles this past season, has already signed with Georgia and enrolled early. Murray and Charles helped lead Plant High to Florida’s Class AAAA championship.

“He [Richt] said they still wanted me and they were waiting patiently for me to make my decision. He said that he had my jersey [No. 7] waiting on me, stuff like that.” The No. 7 at Georgia was previously worn by NFL-bound quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Kansas tailback Bryce Brown, who is ranked No. 1 by Rivals, is one of several elite senior prospects who have yet to sign.

Orson, take your time and just know Georgia will wait on you. This is most definitely one of THE BIGGEST DECISIONS OF YOUR LIFE. Take your time, ask a lot of questions, and talk to people you trust. Good luck w/your decision.

Very Smart Kid… I do wish he really does make sure because it will effect his life.

I hope Charles is a Dawg because I love Georgia, the state, the school, and the Football team and I think Charles will too. But most other fans love their schools and teams as well.

I think the UGA coaches are honest, good men, who also happen to be great coaches. I don’t think Charles will find any better people, education, or coaches, and this is why I think Charles should choose Georgia. These coaches will help you grow into a better football player but most importantly help you grow into even a better person.

Here is where Kiffy tries to get even with Richt. UGA got Brown and now you can bet Kiffy will offer anything it takes to get Charles and Geathers if he can. I hope and trust both of these guys are smart enough to go with their hearts and with the teams and coaches they feel most comfortable with.

Oh give him a break music, let him travel to LA, get the glitz, minus the grits. Then let him decide what he wants to do. It is his decison, he has to live with it. If we want to say the scholy is not open anymore, fine. If we want to keep it open, then let the kid decide on one of the biggest decisons of his life.

I hope he makes a great decision (UGA), but more importantly I want him to make the best decision for himself. He seems to be a good kid with a good decision making skills. His parents have apparently done a good job raising him with the right values. He has always said it would be after he visited USC and I applaud him for being upfront and honest with all the coaches. Good luck to him where ever he decides to go.

This kid was actually a WR at Plant HS. He looks like he could play a post up type WR and eventually become a mismatch type of TE. Safeties and LBs could have a huge problem with him. I think UGA is a natural fit. He may actually go to USC but I think he is just buliding his stock with that. Im looking for UGA to pull him down.

This kid can play, not sure he’ll qualify - most likely be at a prep/jc next year.. delayed decision to work on scores and grades.

We already had one plus in our corner….QB A. Murray. Now this kid is going to “talk with family and pastor”. Thats another plus with Coach Richt’s background and moral character….

Go ahead and add him to the list for 2009.

Whomever he choses, he is going about the process in a workman like fashion. Good for him. He sounds like a great addition to the UGA program. Hope we can sign him.

This young man sounds just like the kind of player I would love to see at UGA. If God is a big part of his life, CMR will help guide this young man in football and in life. Good luck to you Charles.

I hope he isn’t God-directed to any school. Does that mean that the schools he didn’t choose are Godless? The pastor is a moral influence in a person’s life, not a recruiter. He doesn’t know the best fit for this kid, but he can guide him to make a decision that will help the kid’s own sense of self-worth after he picks. I hope a kid comes to UGA as a developing man who sees how our University helps him in life. I hope he joins our football team for the great coaching we can give him toward a professional life. But I hope he doesn’t show up for the preaching.

Georgia is going to have a Big 12 like offense in a few years. We will be scoring 45 points every game.

He should definitely sign with UGA. He already knows what Murray can do and how great coaches Richt and his staff are.

Then you think about the young talent we have at OL, RB, and WR?

No one is ever going to be able to cover Orson Charles when they have to worry about A.J. Green, Marlon Brown, Moore, Caleb King etc.

Not to mention we put TE’s in the NFL. Probably as much as anyone.

What a load! I cannot believe adults follow this stuff like they do. My neighbor told me of these blogs and I couldn’t believe it. Why are these schools making these kids gods?

Perfect case of the tail wagging the dog. Geez………

Come on Orson, make up your mind. God loves the dawgs so I’m sure he’ll tell you to pick us. The right Rev. Richt will take good care of you, including making excuses for you when you don’t have the grades and then again when you get arrested for something. Now, you may have to miss a game against Tenn Tech or Ga Southern, but that’s all part of the front of the high moral character. Be a dawg and be with peeps like me.

Orson, Gainesville is a 90 minute drive from Tampa. THe Gators, currently have one tightend and some unproven receivers. Wouldn’t it make sense to play at the best college football program on the planet. I guarantee the Gators will repeat as National Champs. Wake up kid, and go to a school where you will get the best education, play for the best team in the country with the best coach, and be a part of a community that ranks right up there with the best in the country. That is a no brainer. Georgia is at least 2-3 years away with an unproven quarterback. USC is a million miles away with all americans at each position. Tennessee is has a coach that probably wont last for long, not to mention they are furter behind in rebuilding than Georgia. Florida Gators. There you will be a pro.
