TE Orson Charles calls UGA’s Mark Richt to ask about rumors

Orson Charles, who is Georgia’s top remaining target for its 2009 recruiting class, said he called UGA coach Mark Richt to “clear up some rumors.”

Charles, who may wait until early March to announce his college decision, told the AJC he heard rumors that UGA may use him as a “traditional” tight end. Charles wants to play for a team that lines him up at both tight end and wide receiver. He is ranked as the nation’s No. 62 overall prospect by Rivals.

“I was a little concerned,” said Charles. UGA has already signed Arthur Lynch of Dartmouth, Mass., who is considered a “traditional” tight end.

“I was kind of hearing that Georgia was telling Arthur the same things that they were telling me … and I called Coach Richt because I wanted to hear what he had to say.”

“Coach Richt said that Arthur and me are two different type of players. He said Arthur is more of a ‘complete’ tight end, while I’m more like a ‘hybrid’ guy. [Richt] cleared up all the confusion, and I appreciated it.”

What else did Richt have to say? “He said they still wanted me and they were waiting patiently for me to make my decision. He said that he had my jersey [No. 7] waiting on me, stuff like that.” The No. 7 at Georgia was previously worn by NFL-bound quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Charles said he will announce his college choice after returning from his official visit to Southern Cal on Feb. 20. He is also considering Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. He said he is asking “a lot of questions to all the coaches” of his finalists to help with his decision.

Um, let me guess who is PLANTING these rumors? KIFFIN! KIFFIN! KIFFIN! KIFFIN! My second guess is … Coach O, Coach O, Coach O. Tennessee is resorting to any and all tactics.

Kiffin may soon replace the Old Ball Coach and Urban Crier as the coach you love to hate. Kiffin is walking a fine line. How long will it be before Tenn is “on probation”? Motor mouth Kiffin is living on “borrowed time”. It won’t take long for Tenn. fans and administration to tire of him if he don’t win big. He’ll be gone in three years.

KneeJerk, you may be right; however, CLK’s past couple weeks doesn’t help your position. I believe his recruiting methods are over the top and UT will be on probation by the time he leaves… excuse, he will leave before the hammer drops. I actually believe these rumors were started by FSU coaches.

Man, I have just about had it with these “prima dona” high-schoolers. Imagine the conversation…Charles; “Hey dude, someone be saying that you be saying I be just like that white boy ya’ll signed—that I be just a regular tight end. I don’t be real down wit’ dat, you know…” CMR; “Oh no, no, no Mr. Charles. You’re special—very special. You’re what we adult coaches call a hybrid. You know, Number 7, there ain’t nobody like you, no sirree. You just take your time, you talented hybrid you, and we’ll wait for your magnificient services—if we’re fortunate enough to have you…” Man, what’s the world coming to.

1+2- I’m definitely not defending CLK. His immaturity is to a degree I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a head football coach at a major university. I don’t have any idea who started these rumors, but we’ve already had many CLK bashfest threads. Until it’s proven he’s started this rumor, there’s no need for this thread to be about him as well.

Charles at times could be a slot guy and other times in a TE position. The latter the D would always be guessing is he run blocking or going to him as a receiver. When spread out the D has to respect him as a deep threat. It’s a win win situation where CMR loves to use the TE in his offensive scheme. But with Charles we only employ him more.

Speaking of rumors, anybody have any rumors as to why Charles is waiting until maybe March to make his decision? Other thatn the late visit to USC. Does he just want the Stage like the Reid kid who went to Fla. ST.? Maybe he wants immeidate playing time and is waiting for a program to offer that. I just think if he’s waiting that long to visit USC he takes his suitcase with him, I may be wrong.

Lame Kitten’s mouth is writing checks his team is not talented enough to cash for him.

YOu can be an obnoxious ahole only if you can back it up on the field (see Spurrier, Steve). You notice that in recent years the Ole Ball Coach has not been anywhere near as bellicose as he was in Gainesville - that is because he knows he does not have the team to back up the boasts and he is smart enough to keep his mouth shut.

Kiffin will keep spouting off because he is a little punk who is not old enough to know better. He will start learning to keep his mouth shut when teams like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, etc hang 50 or 60 pts on him and are throwing passes and stuff late in those games.

Lowcountry, No, it is not a reasonable assumption. It is a guess. It could be many people. It could be other recruits. It could be some message board where some overzealous fan started the rumor…kinda like this one. All it took is for the first person that responded to this blog to say it was Kiffin. CLK doesn’t need help digging holes. He’s dug himself a deep one already. I won’t stoop to name calling as you have.

Orson Charles may be the headiest high school recruit ever!!! He’s a baby version of T.O. without college experience. I was an all american athlete and the #1 player out of Tennessee. I became and Dawg and was never able to get going due to injuries. I do not agree with putting so much stock in unproven high school recruits. Yes, they performed greatly against mediocre talent in their divisions but the playing field is equal in college, especially the SEC. Good luck to the Charles recruit but I could care less where he ends up because personally I think he’s an attention w*******. This guy knows where he wants to go. UGA needs to back off and prepare to coach the talent that’s already in place instead of being jerked around by this celebrity. We don’t need stars. Stars try to outshine each other for the spotlight. Let’s learn to tackle and complete intermediate throws and let the play makers make plays. Go Dawgs!

Seems like every article you read covering recruiting these days is loaded with quotes from either the recruit himself, his coach(es), or someone close to him expressing a “ME” attitude. Ya know, “this is what position I want to play.” “Is said school going to make ME their featured player?” And this particular article … “I want to be lined-up as both a TE and WR.”

What has happened to being coachable? Or doing what the coaches believe will best help the TEAM?

I don’t think matters whether he signs or not. Georgia will be using multiple sets with a traditional tight end and no tight end with 3 wide outs. If he doesn’t sign, there are plenty of wide receivers that can take his spot as the 3rd wide out, including Lynch and White or Troup and Micheal Moore. So, if he doesn’t sign, big deal.

As for your true tight ends you have Lynch and Figgins for that.

He may be out there hitting the recruiting trail hard but he’s not doing anything different than that Moron Ron Zook when he got to UF. The only difference between those 2 is Lane is severely less qualified than Zook was for his job and Lane’s already showing he’s an even bigger moron.

Just read the piece in this week’s SI on Lane Kiffin. If it’s possible, this guy may be a bigger A-hole than I had pegged him for. I’m waiting a bit to talk to my Tennessee friends about him, but I can’t believe that they’re really proud of his snot-nosed attitude…hell, keep this up and you won’t be able to distinguish UT fans from UF fans - of course UF fans actually have something more than a smart-mouthed coach to be proud of, and of course a decade-plus of training under Steve Superior.

I had facetiously said that I’d give ‘em three years before they shoot his dog and send the moving van to his house (re: Bill Battle)…with this guy, if his team can’t cash the checks his mouth keeps writing, they’ll do it in two. Hey Lane, you better hope Daddy stays healthy and maybe you shouldn’t buy a house just yet. Obviously, there’s a Grandma in Memphis that instinctively knows a smart-a** when she hears one.

Jr Year @ Riverview/ 8 games played 16 rec. for 398 yds. (24.88 avg.)…Sr yr Plant/ 15 games played 75 rec. for 1421 yds. (18.95 avg.)…which offensive scheme will he fit in w/ the best at the college level…seems that he had a pretty good thing going w/ Murray…wonder how he’ll work out anywhere that doesn’t spread the ball around…will he be the first look, or the last…doubt that he’ll put up any numbers close to HS…let’s hope he picks a place that he feels is best for his future…nice respectful kid, but this is playing out way too long…he’s real close w/ his mother and I’m surprised he didn’t pick USF so she can get to his games…Athens may just be a little too far to travel for a game…now, Gainesville is an up and back drive from Tampa…his pick may just come down to his mother’s ability to get to a game and get home in one day…I think that he already knows where he’s going and is just making the most of visiting schools…then again the #7 jersey is not available at Florida :)

Its pretty simple. If the kid wants to be used as a playmaker then UF is his future. UF uses the TE in so many ways from blocker to WR to shovel pass option.

If wearing the number 7 is his deciding factor then he can have fun being Gator Bait and not playing in Atlanta. No one needs such lame drama especially from an undersized TE.

But honestly if the kid wants to win SEC Championships, catch passes from the greatest player in college history, play in the rose bowl a week late and challenge for other national titles with Brantley then he’ll come to UF.

Supermans cape is gonna be spat upon and chewed up by a big bad p** off dog from Athens next year in Jax.Tebow leaves 2-2 vs them dawgs. Wish that young TE well where ever heads but if he has NFL dreams UGA is the place for him, check the history 10-15 yrs back or more.4 or 5 starting in pro’s now.Thats not a bad ratio.

GatorKen - nothing lasts forever. I lived next door to a Florida graduate for several years back in the seventies and eighties. You may not remember those times, but my former neighbor does. UGA dominated the series in those days. I had enough sense then, as I do now, to know these things run in cycles. I sense you may not appreciate that concept and have actually begun to think UF will always have the upper hand.

Heck I remember when the three surest W’s on the schedule were UT UF and Auburn. Things change.

Heard about another guy in the Tampa area that goes to a Catholic H.S. who is 6’2’ or so and goes around 205 lbs…my buddy said he runs a 4.5 and is a stud and not afraid to come across the middle…I think his name is Broudnik or something along those lines…if Charles doesn’t commit does anyone know anything about this kid; maybe we can get him
