UGA and Georgia Tech expect more head-to-head battles for 2010 recruits

Both Georgia Tech and UGA expect to go head-to-head more often for the state’s top football prospects next year.

This past year, the two archrivals rarely squared off against each other within the state. Georgia and Georgia Tech both offered the same players, but were never really the two finalists, unlike you see so often in surrounding states with Alabama-Auburn, Clemson-South Carolina and all the Florida schools.

The closest thing to a head-to-head battle between Georgia and Georgia Tech was for Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill. He committed to Tech and considered switching to UGA on signing day, but never made an official visit to UGA and stuck with Tech.

Richt said last Wednesday that he expects the two schools to compete more often for players in future years. Why weren’t there more recruiting wars this past season?

“I think one reason is … about 150 Division I players come out of Georgia each year,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said.

“Realistically, we’re going to sign 15 to 20 a year per school. There’s still a boatload out there for everybody else to pick at, too. The other reason is our systems are very different, so I think offensively there won’t be a lot of crossover in who we go after.”

At least three of the state’s top prospects for 2010 have confirmed early offers from both UGA and Georgia Tech: M.L. King tailback Mack Brown, Douglas defensive end Garrison Smith and Newnan safety Alec Ogletree.

Another scenario to consider: Tech only plans to sign about 12-15 players next year.

Which player was it that signed with Georgia but tech went after fairly hard? I want to say Gilliard but I’m not certain he’s the one.

LOL!!! BAWHAHAHHAHAAHA!!! Nice how you left out Hill was all Dawg but Richt, being the class act that he is, was kind enough to inform Hill the night before that the REAL reciever had committed to UGA and that his services were no longer wanted.

We’ll continue trading in Hills for Browns forever. 1 loss every 8 years sits well with me and that’s how it is :)

Hey CMR,

No the real reason is that UGA can offer kids that can’t even spell SAT and GT can not. Also, while there are some good character kids at UGA, the Dawgs have proven they will not let poor character deter them from pursuing good football talent.

Good to see GT won the “only head to head” recruiting battle. Oh yeah, we also won the only head to head football battle too!!! 45-42, 45-42,….

THWG!

Does going head to head with the mutts really make sense for Tech in terms of money and resources? Tech hasn’t done very well in such efforts in many years; why not just go after the players Ugag doen’t want and clean up there?

Come’m GT man. Ga was able to sign Brown and thus didn’t need Hill. Hill was our back up plan only, once we found out Brown was a Dawg, Richt kindly let Hill know to go to N. Ave. Richt closed with a flurry to get Brown and Charles in a few days. We will give you the credit for this year. You won! As norm for our year we forgot to show up after half time like we didn’t show up for the first half against Bama and the second against Fla.
Short memory however for the team that has won the last 7 of the last 8 years????? Go Dawgs!

Geoff,

The answer to your question is all 18. Tech fans would saw their own arms off to get half the kids we landed. But yes, Johnson was stalking Gilliard the entire time. They want all our student athletes. You can’t blame them, and reading their ridiculous lies and hypocrisies on here makes it all the more sweet.

The NCAA eligiblity requirements are the same across the board. Do any of you Tech fans have a clue what you are talking about?

If you read all these comments it’s kind of funny to read the UGA fans.

  • GA fans are all defensive! Most comments center around the fact that “no way a recruit GA wanted could ever go to Tech”.
  • “We didn’t want him”
  • Richt called him at the last minute and told him he was not needed at UGA

Crying Puppy Dawgs! Yes, a well sought after recruit within the state decided he would rather go to Tech and not UGA. And if you did the research you’d find his reason was “education”. And for UGA fans you may know this as “ED U MA CA TION”!

Voice of reason-

You can point to two tech players in the last 10 years that have had legal trouble while at tech. tarrant and reuben houston. how many arrests did ga have this past off season alone? 8? in general, tech signs kids that get into less trouble.

Came down to “education?” Will you please provide your source? UGA didn’t offer Hill until about two days before signing day. You don’t find it a bit odd that the second UGA offered him he all at once was confused and torn? Didn’t the AJC report that UGA was even with Tech in Hill’s mind? All that and he was only offered days before signing day. But, again oddly enough, Richt learned the night before Brown was a Dawg and it just so happened to be the same night Hill “decided” to keep his commitment with Tech?

Get real Techy and grow up. Just like 95% of all Tech recruits, Hill settled with the Jackets.

Uh oh, Tech is going to challenge Georgia for recruits. Man we are scared to death. How many in-state UGA signees listed Tech as a possibility? I’m not sure there was one guy who signed with Georgia who took an official to Tech. I also don’t think that one Tech signee took an official to UGA. We have had battles wih Tech before: Morgan Burnett and Calvin Johnson come to mind, but once you are dumb enough to consider Tech it seems you usually are too stupid to resist the lure of the Urine Stain on North Avenue. The point is that we aren’t going to be swimming in the same pond no matter what. The advantage of having Tech be a decent option is at least maybe they stay away from USC, Auburn, Bama, or UT where they might actually be a threat to win more than once a decade.

I guess I was the one who was uninformed if you are true. I was under this impression because of CMR’s interview on 790 on Signing Day.

Mr. Brown had just signed on ESPN. Then while listening to the interview, the commentators told CMR that UGA had just gained another WR. CMR thusly acted very suprised as if he had never heard of it before.

Technique - Probably an honest mistake on your part - but Mark Richt knew of Brown’s signing on Monday night - he officially committed on Wednesday on ESPNU - that is why Mark Richt hinted before the announcement that he loves our class and would really be excited if we could land another receiver “One that’s very tall” - an obvious hint about Brown. He also dropped a hint about Orson Charles - so maybe that bodes well for UGA signing him after his visit to USC. Of course you never really know until you get the paperwork - and I’m sure it pains you to think this - but Mark Richt is a very honorable man and let Stephen know that he would have a better chance of playing at Tech. Personally as a UGA fan - I’d love to have them both - but with Wooten and Brown - UGA got the 2 receivers they coveted.

Voice….you are mistaken. Tech does NOT use NCAA minimums (which UGA does) for admissions on athletes. The minimum SAT is haigher, and the GPA AND the NUMBER of “core courses” counted/required are both higher.

You really should do some fact-checking in the future.

1) Yes you did win this year but lets be honest….would you rather have a ring to signify 1 out of the past 8 or would you rather win 7 of 8??

2) Hell of a job GT did showing how much they plan to throw the ball in future (i.e. Bowl disaster against the 3rd best team in the SEC West LSU) - Good luck Stephen Hill…doesn’t he need someone to throw him the ball first???

3) Yeah yeah….academic requirements hender GT ability to get the same caliber players UGA gets….what really hinders it is the 60k seat stadium you have in the heart of the ghetto

4) Not every kid GT recruits can stand playing in the SEC week in and week out….its tough having to play in the best division of the best conference in college football week in and week out as opposed to having so many cup-cakes in your conference schedule every year

I don’t think Georgia is gonna go for the same players Tech is unless we want our talent level to fall of a cliff. Tech will just be wasting their time if they go head to head with Georgia for players because they will lose 90% of the time. You can’t spell “pathetic” without T-E-C-H!!!

Obviously a lot of Tech fans don’t know the rules of recruiting. No, CMR did not call Hill the night before signing day letting off the hook becauase he couldn’t. Only recruits can reach out to coaches during the dead period right before signing day. I also think Tech fans are forgetting it was Hill who called Garner b/c he was wavering. I’m glad Hill made the choice that is best for him, but before you folks start bashing CMR, get your facts straight. And by the way, UGA’s standards are higher than the NCAA minimum required for student athletes, thus the reason we don’t offer some kids.

They don’t go head to head mostly because of academics. I wouldn’t admit that if I were either school’s head coach. Half of the recruiting pool can’t get into Vanderbilt, Stanford, a service academy, or GT. It’s just that simple. Therefore Tech is usually relegated to low-four stars and high-three stars.

What’s different this year (2010) is that the higher profile athletes have got the grades to get into Tech. Now, there is a real competition. This actually happened in 07 too. Nesbitt, Dwyer, Donley, Burnett, and others were all offered by Tech and UGA. I’m sure UGA had kids that we offered as well.

I don’t know who will win those wars. My guess is that it will be won on the field (toe to toe) and by the caliber of person each school recruits. If either school can find an “ambassador,” they’ll likely have the tighter unit.

We’ll patiently wait. Look at all the kids that Tech lost this year to SEC schools?

Everyone on these blogs knows if every kid that commitmented to UGA had commitmented to Tech all we’d be hearing is how they’re WELL ROUNDED, HIGH CHARACTER STUDENT ATHLETES. It’s spin, they’re lies and it’s all Tech fans think they can hang their hat on and it’s not even close to being true.

When you discuss the Gators I’m guessing it’s not 8 years or 12 or 16 or 20. I’m guessing the only important period there was the 70s. lol. Cherry picking juvies lmao. And the Gamecocks 1 year is probably it right? and Vandy?

You act like your athletes are somehow smarter than the ones that go to Georgia. That’s a joke.

Hang on to that 3 point narrow victory you had last year. It’s not going to happen again for a LONG time.

gt_thwg,

Hmm…I might be going on a limb, but I’m pretty sure Richt, nor a single UGA fan, would care to trade our top 10 class with your 49th. But keep telling yourself that. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Ramble,

However many kids Richt signed last year, plus the 18 this year is the actual total of how many kids Richt has beaten Johnson out on. Nevermind the LB from Valdosta that Johnson has been stalking who is all Dawg. Again, whatever you douches need to do to sleep at night.

February 10, 2009 10:17 AM | Link to this

WOW!!!! Where do I began?

First…Ramble On…congrats! Once again you have won the “idiot of the day award”!! You can get off the pc and blogs now and get on with your pathetic life for the rest of the day. Go have a cold one with “yellow Blood”.

Stephen Hill…Great athlete! Tall and rangy, fast with GREAT leaping ability…suspect hands for a WR. UGA recruited and he expressed a desire to go to UGA in late summer and early fall. CMR was honest with Hill…he knew UGA had other receivers rated above him on their board…PERIOD!! UGA did offer Hill late after missing on a couple of other kids, however much to Hill’s credit he honored his commitment to GT! IF UGA had offered early…he would be a DAWG!!! If my aunt had gonads she would be my uncle!!!

Head to head…or toe to toe, as one GT fan suggested…Most of the toe to toe recruiting between the two schools is done a year in advance and we, the fans, know little about it. By the end of these players junior year and the summer of their senior year, the coaches KNOW which players have a mutual interest in each school and which ones do not. THEN the coaches decide which players they will spend their time and resources actively recruiting!! Thus, the actual “toe to toe” recruiting battles during the height of recruiting season and signing day are quite minimal!

NOW. The myth of the “student athlete” or more acurately the “athlete-student”! IF ANY OF YOU…GT OR UGA FANS..THINK THAT MOST OF THESE PLAYERS WOULD BE ADMITTED TO EITHER SCHOOL IF THEY WERE NOT ATHLETES, YOU ARE IN SERIOUS DENIAL..AND I AINT TALKING BOUT THE RIVER!!! Case in point..as stated by GT bloggers here the last few days..the AVERAGE SAT score of GT’s incoming freshman football players is 1028. high school GPA..3.4. By the very meaning of the word average that means that just as many of them made less than 1028 as those that made more than 1028. Right? And since you make fun of the fact that UGA has a large percentage of “special admits” and GT has very few(single digit percentage) This would lead me to believe, based on info posted here by GT fans, that a high school student with a 1028 SAT and a 3.4 GPA would be readily admitted to GT. Right? Me thinks not…in fact I know that same student would not be admitted to UGA!!! Therefore, it is quite logical that the “special admits” is a matter of semantics!! PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG…NO SPIN PLEASE!!

To all you good GT fans and practioniers of “Clean Old Fashioned Hate”…congrats on your victory last season…see ya after Thanksgiving!!!!

Oh yeah….GO DAWGS AND TO HELL WITH GT!!!!

ps…ramble on, yellow blood, gt forever and the rest of the idiots…resume your daily routine!!!

Michael, you are probably right at least to certain extent particularly on defense. I am sure the Dawgs would have loved to have gotten Tech signee J.C.Lanier in a package deal with Washuan Ealey. Ealey could have just as easily fit in at Tech as could at Georgia.

I got the impression that the Dawgs and CMR went after Stephin Hill, just like Cameron Kenney, late in the game as a back up plan in case Marlon Brown did not sign with them.

HEY UGA FANS

You can keep having all your 4 and 5 * recruits!!! Please keep getting them. That way you have no excuse that the players weren’t good enough or that injuries and suspensions hurt you so much when you underachieve. ESPECIALLY when Ga Tech beats you. I loved watching that, and with Paul Johnson there, he can bring in his 4 and 3 *’s and beat the everliving crap out of you.

I’m looking forward to next years game! :D

Why put a topic like this up for discussion? I knew before I started reading the comments, all it would be is Tech and UGA fans insulting one another. Even though I have a son at Georgia, I love college football period! So I would rather see more intellegent football insight discussed.

From my point of view, I believe the success Paul Johnson has had in his first year at Tech and the impact he had at Navy, say a lot about his system and his ability to coach. Plus, he is enthusiastic and hungry. Kids will be drawn to that energy. I think he will definately impact in-state recruiting and undoubtedly will bring much success to GA Tech. However, he will never be able to attract a top rated QB. He will continue to get the athlete who can run the ball, but won’t be able to hit the broad side of a barn with a pass. The best QB’s will go to UGA or another school where they have an opportunity to play in a pro style offense. After all, the goal of every Division I QB is to play in the NFL.

On the other side of the coin, I believe Mark Richt to be one of the best football coaches in the nation. I also believe him to be a very honorable man, who will bring the correct recruits into UGA. I do believe it hurt the Dawgs to lose Knowshon and Stafford to the NFL. So much offensive production is going to be hard to replace.

Though, the one thing I will never understand is why Tech didn’t get prepared for LSU in the Chick-Fil-A bowl. Tech’s entire season revolved around just beating Georgia. Do you think a recruit from out of state gives a sh-t? I was sitting on the 50 yard line watching that embarrassment. For 3 or 4 hours that afternoon and evening, all I heard was Tech fans singing and chanting insults about Georgia. Brilliant! Did you not know you were playing LSU?

Home field advantage. The Dome was 85% Tech fans. The only taunting chants from fans I heard, which was directed at the actual opposing teams fans, was LSU fans chanting: RUDY! RUDY! RUDY!

George, equally baffling is why Tech fans think UGA fans have no room to talk bad about Tech after their first victory in 8 years. Funny how this rule didn’t seem to apply to them when we were handing them their a$$ seven years running. They slung all the mud they wanted at UGA with reckless abandon. I can’t figure out if they are big fat hypocrites or just plain dumb. Your comment about them hurling insults at UGA during a game with LSU has me leaning towards the latter. Don’t get me wrong. I think its great that they can build a bridge or figure out the fastest way to get a package from point A to point B, but they seem to struggle with common sense and logic.

Who even worries about anything you do? Who even cares? Now you’re supposedly going to take our recriuts and start beating us? LMFAO, that’s a good one. There’s not one thing that scares me about GT. Nope, not one thing. I’ll put AU, FLA, & UT as bigger rivals than GT. Love hearing GT fans talk trash. It’s a little above a Detroit Lions fan talking trash. Your program has no future. Ok well after reading all of those amazingly good posts fans of both sides I must say its funny….and anyone that reads these and doesn’t get a laugh is crazy. If your a UGA fan you can sit here and talk about the great recruits and how gay tech students are because of the ratio guys/girls. Also if your Tech fan we can sit here and make fun of them because of academics and because god knows 9/10 people who post on here for Georgia never went there so hell why does their opinion matter when they argue over credibility of players and academics because the only times there on campus is for those 6 Saturdays in the Fall. BUT HOLY SH&% if I have to listen to someone spurting out numbers for academics I will laugh at you in your face and tell you the REAL NUMBERS. YES Im not going to disagree that guys from both schools on average will have the same intelligence in general, you will have the really smart o-line and the really dumb athletes. BUT once you get into the school there is no escape for Georgia Tech atheletes there are no majors that rank as some of the worst in the nation they JUST DONT EXIST at Tech. With the LOWEST major according to USA TODAY is our Business Management program which ranks If Im not mistaken 55th in the nation…..SO TELL ME UGA EXPERTS what major do most of your athletes participate in….is it GOLF TURF MANAGEMENT??? or how about HISTORY OF GRASS??? OR WHAT ABOUT SPORTS MANAGEMENT (which for you that don’t know is the class that busted the UGA bball team the year when one of the questions was what happens when you go out of bounds?) DO NOT SIT HERE and compare academics because there just isn’t even a hope you can win UGA fans…

I think U will see more head to head battles next yr, but U won’t see as many as U would think, I think that UGA & Tech have different recruiting strategies. It seems to me like UGA focuses more on out of state & Tech wants to clean up in state. With Tech being down the last few yrs UGA didn’t have to work very hard to get in state guys, the really good in-state guys all lined up @ UGA’s door, ready to commit, letting UGA focus more on out of state guys.

If Tech is able to get back, then U will see UGA have to work harder at getting in state guys, many of which will be hotly pursued by Tech. Although GA certainly isn’t Texas or Flor, we have better H.S. talent than most states, I think that a College team could build a consistent top 25 team w/ mostly GA players, and I think that’s what PJ wants to do at Tech.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Poor Ol ghost dawg, I don’t know if Paul Johnson will win ten straight, but it’s very possible. I mean, GT does hold the record, may as well break it.

The thought of playing Matt (the Spoon) Stafford, Noshow Merino, Mo Muslim at home this year is very frightening…oh wait a minute, they’re gone! Yeah, you leghumpers better hope you can keep it close.

Gee whiz and we have basically the same team coming back, with about 2 years experience running the triple option when we meet again. You know the triple option that ran 409 yards on your fleabags, the triple option that scored 26 third quarter points on the Nadlickers. The triple option Roddy Jones had 16.9 yards per carry on the mutts…oohhhhhh yeah, scary stuff indeed.

Dawg fans are so easy to spin up. Just mention the academics and the dumbass mutts get all defensive.

Our average football player has a higher SAT score than the average UGA student SAT. Dumb Mutts ALL - their posters on our site prove they have no life and no intelligence.

It really does not matter how much talent UGA can recruit. You will never match the Gators in talent and your coaching staff has shown they can not coach or discipline the talent you do have.

While we will be winning Championships, UGA will be relegated to playing for 2nd or 3rd every year in the SEC East. Sux to be a UGA fan knowing you have no chance to even win your division. Going to be a very long year for UGA without Stafford and Moreno. UGA will be lucky to be any better than 8-5 next year.
