UGA and Georgia Tech expect more head-to-head battles for 2010 recruits

Both Georgia Tech and UGA expect to go head-to-head more often for the state’s top football prospects next year.

This past year, the two archrivals rarely squared off against each other within the state. Georgia and Georgia Tech both offered the same players, but were never really the two finalists, unlike you see so often in surrounding states with Alabama-Auburn, Clemson-South Carolina and all the Florida schools.

The closest thing to a head-to-head battle between Georgia and Georgia Tech was for Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill. He committed to Tech and considered switching to UGA on signing day, but never made an official visit to UGA and stuck with Tech.

Richt said last Wednesday that he expects the two schools to compete more often for players in future years. Why weren’t there more recruiting wars this past season?

“I think one reason is … about 150 Division I players come out of Georgia each year,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said.

“Realistically, we’re going to sign 15 to 20 a year per school. There’s still a boatload out there for everybody else to pick at, too. The other reason is our systems are very different, so I think offensively there won’t be a lot of crossover in who we go after.”

At least three of the state’s top prospects for 2010 have confirmed early offers from both UGA and Georgia Tech: M.L. King tailback Mack Brown, Douglas defensive end Garrison Smith and Newnan safety Alec Ogletree.

Another scenario to consider: Tech only plans to sign about 12-15 players next year.

Georgia and Georgia Tech target Palmetto State DL

Georgia and Georgia Tech are courting junior defensive lineman A.J. Cann of Bamberg Ehrhardt High (S.C).

The 6-foot-4, 232-pound Cann has scholarship offers from Auburn, Clemson, Colorado, Duke, Maryland, N.C. State, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tulsa.

Cann doesn’t have an offer yet from Georgia, though he did attend Junior Day in Athens on Jan. 31.

Georgia Tech linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary told Cann recently to expect a written offer soon from the Jackets.

“Coach B.J. came down and said he has an offer for A.J.,” Bamberg Ehrhardt assistant coach Corey Crosby said. “We haven’t received [the offer] in the mail yet. He’s planning on going to spring practice at Georgia Tech.

“As for Georgia, they kind of like him. He’s still waiting to see if they offer. He really likes Georgia and their academics. [Georgia defensive ends] coach Jon Fabris really likes him.”

Cann is scheduled to attend upcoming Junior Days at Auburn, Clemson, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Georgia Tech gives options with early offer for Buford lineman

Georgia Tech’s early offer to Buford’s Kolton Houston came with an interesting twist.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Houston said Tech coach Paul Johnson told him he was being recruited to play either side of the ball for the Jackets. It was Houston’s choice to decide between offensive or defensive line.

Johnson said that when Tech’s coaches reviewed Houston’s film, the offensive and defensive coaches both said they wanted him. Johnson told Houston it was his decision. What was Houston’s response? He said that he will play whatever position helps the team the most.

Houston has not committed to Tech, or any other college. He also lists offers from Clemson, Maryland, Stanford, Vanderbilt and South Carolina. Houston is also under consideration by UGA.

““[UGA assistant] Stacy Searles really likes him, and he is definitely on their radar,” Buford coach Jess Simpson said earlier.

His father, Shane Houston, played two years for the Bulldogs in the late 80’s.

Simpson said Houston has the frame and athleticism to play on either side of the ball.
