Jefferson County DB Barry Bostic nearly committed to Georgia Tech

Jefferson County defensive back Barry Bostic says he was tempted to commit to Georgia Tech during the Jackets’ Junior Day on Jan. 31.

“It was in my mind the whole day,” the 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior admitted. “But I owe it to myself to see what everyone else has to offer.

“But Georgia Tech is my number one.”

Bostic plans to attend upcoming Junior Days at Vanderbilt and South Carolina. He and Jefferson County defensive lineman Chris Crenshaw, who signed with Tech on Wednesday, are cousins.

“Chris is on me all the time about Georgia Tech,” Bostic said. “He really wants us to play college football together.”

Woodward Academy junior DE Anderson visits Maryland

Woodward Academy defensive end Henry Anderson attended Junior Day at Maryland on Saturday.

“They have a really nice campus and facilities,” said the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Anderson, who has scholarship offers from Central Florida, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Wake Forest.

Anderson attended Junior Day at Georgia Tech on Jan. 31. If an offer is forthcoming from the Jackets, it will likely arrive over the summer.

“Georgia Tech seems pretty interested,” Anderson said. “They didn’t offer me, but they said they want me to come to their summer camp and see how I do there.”

Anderson enjoyed meeting Central Florida coach George O’Leary last month.

“Coach O’Leary came to Woodward Academy about a month ago,” he said. “He was a funny guy. It was good talking to him.”

Georgia’s Mark Richt says keeping score with recruits is “kind of nutty”

When Georgia landed wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis, it ended an 0-for-4 streak on signing day for the Bulldogs with prospects who had listed UGA as one of their finalists (S Jawana Starling, LB Jarvis Jones, OL Bobby Massie and WR Stephen Hill) but went elsewhere.

What did Georgia coach Mark Richt think about signing Brown after missing on four potential recruits in a row?

“It’s not an 0-for-4 skid. I don’t even know who’s keeping score. I think it’s ridiculous to do that. Keeping score like that, I guess, is fun for you guys and makes news, but I think it’s kind of nutty …”

Richt played down the spectacle of “signing day announcements,” but admitted that several UGA assistant coaches whooped and hollered after watching Brown on EPSNU.

UGA’s recruiting class is ranked No. 9 overall by Rivals, and seventh-best in the nation by Scout.

UGA holds scholarships for two more, TE Orson Charles and DT Kwame Geathers

Georgia has signed 18 players for its 2009 recruiting class and hopes to add two more, tight end Orson Charles of Tampa and defensive tackle Kwame Geathers of Carver’s Bay, S.C.

Charles said he will announce his college decision after returning from official visit to Southern Cal on Feb. 20. Geathers, the younger brother of former UGA standout Robert Geathers, had told GoGamecocks.com that he could sign with Georgia or Central Florida by as early as the upcoming week.

The 6-foot-3, 227-pound Charles is ranked as the nation’s No. 62 overall prospect by Rivals, and he is considering offers from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and USC.

How badly does Georgia want Charles? Mark Richt couldn’t mention Charles specifically, but made veiled references when speaking to UGA fans on signing day. “I’d still be excited … [about] another tight end … who is a mismatch for linebackers and safeties, I would be pretty excited about that … We could really use that about right now, if you catch my drift.”

Charles said Georgia has promised to hold his high school number for him. UGA’s No. 7 jersey was worn previously by NFL-bound quarterback Matthew Stafford. One of the main reasons Georgia feels good about its chances with Charles is because his high school teammate, quarterback Aaron Murray, signed with the Bulldogs. The two helped lead Plant High to Florida’s Class AAA state championship last December.

What are UGA’s chances of signing Geathers? UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner is a close friend of his family, and older brother Robert Geathers played at UGA. Another one of his brothers, Clifton Geathers, committed to UGA but later signed with South Carolina, where he is a current member of the Gamecocks.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Geathers ruled out South Carolina because they recruited him at offensive line, according to GoGamecocks. Carver’s Bay coach James Thompson told the website that Geathers prefers Georgia or Central Florida because both would let him play on the defensive line.
