UGA waiting two weeks, maybe longer, on TE Orson Charles

Georgia will have to wait at least two more weeks to get an answer from tight end Orson Charles of Tampa. Maybe longer.

Charles, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 62 overall prospect, will make his college decision after returning from an official visit to Southern Cal. He had considered traveling to USC this weekend, after taking the ACT on Saturday. However, he postponed the recruiting trip to Feb. 20.

“The other date [Feb. 20] just works out better for me because of school, basketball … a lot of reasons,” Charles said.

The 6-foot-3, 227-pound Charles is mulling over offers from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Southern Cal. He said all four of the colleges have told him they will wait as long as he needs to make a decision.

Charles has not set an exact date for his announcement. He said he will wait until after returning from California and discuss matters with his friends and family before having a better idea on his deciding date.

Adding this guy to UGA’s class (and/or Geathers) would definitely make it a great class, second best in the SEC behind LSU. I pray he chooses Georgia, who most experts say is the team to beat.

Good lord kid make a decision….at this point who cares where he goes! Not sure I would even want him.

Good grief uga121 - I’m sure Charles is all torn up that he’s making you wait. This is a decision that will affect the rest of his life and if he’s good enough to leverage four big time schools to hold offers, I say more power to him. Following recruiting is fun but it’s his life. Give him a break.

Geoffdawg I gave him a break right up untill signing day when all normal recruits have made their decision. I even gave him basically another week but dragging this out till the end of february is just hungry for attention. If you want to give him a break then fine but I think he’s had plenty of time….everybody else has.

Again, so what? Whether he chooses to sign with Georgia or somebody else, the freshman class will be exactly the same come Fall practice whether he signed on Feb. 4th or two months from now. Delaying it doesn’t adversely affect the program so why do you care so much? As I understand it, he couldn’t work his USC visit in until after signing day so I don’t begrudge him at all. It’s his life and it’s not up to you or me or anyone besides Charles to decide how to run it. To complain about it is pointless.

i believe that a certain #34 didn’t commit til April of 1980. I think that worked out OK…uga121, i’m glad YOU gave him another week - how stupid that sounds…

Don’t count the Gators out, yet. Although I believe Georgia is in the lead for him, I would think playing in those two tight end sets with Gonzalez next year in Gainesville for the National Champs might be be of interest to him as well. I don’t see USC getting him. But I didn’t think they would get the LB, Jones, either. I really thought the Gators had Jones, LSU. But I don’t think he had enough overall speed and mobility to play in the Gators D. Charles certainly has it to play in the Gators O. But I think the Dawgs will land him due to his friendship with the QB from Tampa…and he likes Garner (sp?)and the TE/NFL track record. Probably a Dawgs get. Does Geathers have the grads?

Okay, I really feel like I shouldn’t have to explain this to Georgia fans who are well informed for the most part but I see ya’ll are gonna force my hand here. uga121, the kid is waiting so long beacuse his COACH doesn’t allow his kids to take visits during the season. So now instead of rushing into a decision that will affect the rest of his life just to please you, he is taking ALL of his visits now. Which he is well within his rights to do as a potential ncaa athlete. Everyone is always going on about how they’re sick of these kids not taking thier opportunities seriously and then when one of em does and it doesn’t suit you, you turn around and bash him. “Not sure if I’d want him anyway, sounds like he’s starved for attention to me!” Very well-informed uga121, do some research before you decide to bash an innocent kid because he has all the talent you WISH you had. (And furthermore you better be on your hands and knees praying that we get this kid if you’re any kinda Bulldawg fan at all) And Tampagator, I bleed RED AND BLACK and will till the day I die so there is no good reason I should be teaching you about your own team, (which I despise by the way, but you gotta know your enemy), but the tight end you’re SO excited about putting Orson Charles with next year is named Arron Hernandez. Not Gonzalez, that guy plays in Kansas City and has no more eligibility left for college. That was not only bad info from you, that was borderline racist. And for that matter, you live in Tampa and root for the Gators. What are you doing reading a blog about UGA recruits? Go read your own stories about UF.

Top…lighten up, Francis. maybe Tampa is learning about HIS enemy. Jeez. Tampa, Geathers doesnt have an offer, dont listen to the AJC. He wont until he qualifies, period. Great DL, I hope he does, but until then, no commitable offer.

Oh I’m sorry Kendall, do you think I hurt his feelings? Or maybe did I offend you with my harsh words? I really am just joking, I’m a sarcastic person with a somewhat “dry” sense of humor and really didn’t mean to sound so down on these guys. It looks like my sarcasm didn’t really transfer as far my writing goes, it appears I have some research I should be doing also.

So, Tampa, since you didn’t get Jones, he doesn’t have what it takes to play for UF.

But since Charles is still in play, he’s all that.

Surely, if he signs elsewhere, you’ll diss him, too.

Typical sh*thead Florida fan logic.

UF fans, Love him or hate him? Did you love Chris Leak, the QB that took you to the natl championship in 06’, note! Gave all that credit to Tim Teabag. Orson Charles will be at UGA next year with Green, Brown, King, Moore, Durham, White, and Figgins, lighting up defenses with a QB that would have started with 80% of the other SEC schools last year.I hope he comes home and makes some unbeleavable catches against y’all, so I can see the look on theUF fans when the “GOLDEN BOY”, stands in defeat by the little red head that could.

UF has 4 returning TEs. All but one was either all SEC or All-American. With additional TEs already signing LOIs, they look pretty well stocked for next year. Should Charles choose to go to UF, barring injuries, he can pretty much count on sitting out his first 2 years. Still, UF is a good school and a good team so he could probably learn a lot from the other TEs in those 2 years. UGA seems unusually shallow this year at TE (only 2 returning true TEs). Again a good school and a good team. Should Charles choose UGA, he would most likely start or be on first rotation. USC has 6 returning TEs. Starters coming back and their backups as well. Not close to home at all for the recruit. Probably could work into a starting role in a couple of years. Be interesting to see where he ends up. Looks like best early play chances may be at UGA.

First, lighten up on Tampa Gator. He was very civil, which is something I cannot say for most people representing other schools that jump on the Dawgs blog.

Second. UGA121, take the advice given above. If my son were in the position of this kid, I would tell him to take his time and make the best decision for him. He happens to be so talented that four premier programs are more than happy to wait. And hope and pray that we get him. We have the potential to line up next year with this kid at tight end (who can fly) - 6’5, 6’4, 6’4 wide receiver sets.

Everybody have a great week!

SEC Fan: get your facts straight about my Gators. We have only 2 returning tight ends and only one of them will be a sure starter and the other will be competing for playing time with the new incoming TE. Of course if Orson goes to UGA he’d start because there is no other worthy competition currently on the team. He’d probably beat out a reciever and become the 2nd option next to AJ Green if given the chance. Point is, UGA “needs” him and my Gators will have another great “addition” should he decide to committ.

Hey TopDawg, you are way off base with your comments to TampaGator about Gonzales. He was referring to Billy Gonzales the WR coach. Not sure if BG is also the TE coach, but I am sure he will be very much involved in the developemnt of a C Ingram type TE. The racist comment came out of nowhere. We are set with or without this guy. Would like to have him as a big target for Tebow (now) or Brantley in the coming years. Know matter who gets him, it will be a couple of years before we know whether he deserves this hype or not.

Sounds like this kid has a big ego. All the big name kids have signed yet he chooses to take his time. I dont blame him though because it’s a big decision of his life. No matter which school, I hope he turns out great….waiting all the schools wait for his service. Demographically, I see him choosing an SEC school.

Give the kid as much time as he needs. It’s not like he’s tying up scholarships that could go to someone else—not going to matter whether he decides tomorrow or in June.

He’s 18 and making what’s probably one of the most important decisions of his life so far. He’s not the one hyping himself; we are. Leave him alone and let him decide.

Seems a couple of you have delusions about Gator beliefs. Leak and a stellar defense got the Gators a title, with Tebow & Harvin’s help, in 2006. Last year it was Tebow & Harvin, with help from a maturing defense, that got the 2008 title. Next year, it’s equal parts Tebow and the country’s #1 defense that will get a 3rd title in 4 years. UGA will be lucky to put up 10 points in ‘09 vs. the Gators, no matter how many great recruits they get…
