UGA’s Rodney Garner breaks down the Bulldogs 2009 recruits
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
A look at Georgia signees, with a comment from recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner:
MARLON BROWN WR/6-5/200/Harding Academy (Tenn.) Garner on Brown: “Very talented, big receiver who possesses big-play ability. Very explosive, tremendous athlete and outstanding young man. We had him targeted as a top priority for the 2009 recruiting class.”
CHRIS BURNETTE G/6-3/290/Troup County Garner on Burnette: “Very intelligent, athletic, big man. Can play several positions on OL. We really like his athleticism and versatility.”
WASHAUN EALEY RB/6-0/205/ECI Garner on Ealey: “Arguably the top running back in the state. Set numerous state records. Should contribute to the rich running back tradition at UGA.”
MICHAEL GILLIARD LB/6-2/200/Valdosta Garner on Gilliard: “Very athletic and versatile player who can play several positions. Comes from a traditionallyrich program. We are very excited about how he can fit into our defensive scheme.”
ABRY JONES DT/6-4/270/Northside-Warner Robbins Garner on Jones: “Extremely athletic big man whom we have been recruiting for quite some time. Early commit. Arguably one of the top DL in the country. Should help continue rich DL tradition at UGA.”
DALLAS LEE DT/6-4/295/Buford Garner on Lee: “Played both ways for coach Jess Simpson at Buford HS, which is traditionally a program rich in talent. We have been watching him for several years. Dallas brings a defensive mentality to the offensive side of the ball. We are excited about the toughness he will bring to the OL.”
AUSTIN LONG OT/6-5/275/Briarcrest Christian (Tenn.) Garner on Long: “Athletic big man from the state of Tennessee. Top OL out of that state. Has the frame to grow and mature into an outstanding player.”
DERRICK LOTT DT/6-5/265/North Cobb Garner on Lott: “Exceptionally talented big man who has been on our radar for quite some time. He fits in the mold with the other two DL in this class, which we feel is one of the top DL classes in the country.”
JORDAN LOVE DB/6-0/185/Deep Run (Va.) Garner on Love: “Very talented player that Coach Martinez is very excited about having at UGA. Very intelligent. Great ball skills and play making ability.”
ARTHUR LYNCH TE/6-5/245/Dartmouth (Mass.) Garner on Lynch: “Big athletic tight end who should be able to fill both roles well as a blocker and pass receiver. Really excited about everything he brings to the table.”
ZACH METTENBERGER QB/6-5/225/Oconee County Garner on Mettenberger: “Local star. Has a very strong arm. Big frame and stature. He has the opportunity to be an outstanding passer. Has been on our radar for a long time. We have had the opportunity to be around him and work with him for many years in camps.”
DEXTER MOODY LB/6-2/215/ECI Garner on Moody: “Young man who was on our radar very early. Very athletic. Has ability to play all three LB positions. Really excited about his athleticism and playmaking ability.”
AARON MURRAY QB/6-1/200/Plant (Fla.) Garner on Murray: “Considered one of top QBs in the country. He is a very tough young man, evidenced by him coming back from what should have been a season-ending injury; however, he came back to lead his team to the state championship. Has all the intangibles.”
MONTEZ ROBINSON DE/6-4/240/Avon (Ind.) Garner on Robinson: “Tall, rangy, very explosive kid. Really became high on our radar after last year’s combine where he ran a 4.5, impressive at his size. The undisputed No. 1 player in the state of Indiana. Originally from Alabama, he has southern ties.”
BRANDEN SMITH CB/5-11/170/Washington Garner on Smith: “Exceptional athlete. Very explosive. Brings a lot to the table as a return specialist and a cover guy. We feel that he will have the opportunity to make an impact on our program.”
CHASE VASSER LB/6-4/210/Chestatee Garner on Vasser: “Chase is a very rangy and athletic guy. May have been a little underrated but he showed in the Georgia-Florida all-star game why we think he can be an outstanding player for UGA.”
SHAWN WILLIAMS DB/6-1/190/Early County Garner on Williams: “Very rangy athlete whom we feel from the ability standpoint can play numerous positions on our defense. Has big-play ability.”
RANTAVIOUS WOOTEN WR/5-10/170/Glades Central (Fla.) Garner on Wooten: “Very exciting player. Has the ability to make plays every time he touches the ball. Outstanding quickness.”

I have two questions for anyone who may know
1-who do we know on the above list that has not yet qualified?
2-who else is out there that we may still sign?
Go Dawgs!

only 3 are known are this point ealey, moody, and robinson - but all three seem to be on track this spring for qualifying
charles and geathers are the only two remaining out there with scholarship offers as of now.
its down to ucf and uga for geathers
there’s a rumor charles’ scholarship has been pulled from usc so it would be down between uf and uga for him

Great class, but in 48 weeks, I’ll still be shopping myself falsely to coaches throughout the South until my wife makes me shut up and sit down. Oh sure, I’ll only be a recruiting hitman in Athens for the rest of my life, but the old lady will get off my back and my idiot coach will just keep giving me raises as long as the illegal side of my job doesn’t come back to him.

31-0 at the half?!!
SEC really picked up it up as a whole. BAMA, LSU, UGA, UF, USC, TENN, OLE Miss - WOW!!!!!
How bout Bama closing huge today!!!!
Good haul for the Dogs - really surprised about Reid going to FSU - his loss!
With Brown coming in - really closes out a good class - and maybe will get Charles.
Hate it that Massie went to Ole Miss - would have cemented a great OL class - and last year as well - as I stated - build a team from the inside out. Good for Ole Miss and Coach Nutt - have a hard time rooting against Nutt and Ole Miss.
Can’t wait till spring - A day game - will also try to make the G day game.
Bama will be solid next year - interesting to see if QB position will be a liability for us.
UGA will be good - not great. Cox will be steady - like Greg Talley was - but no way a star. UGA will not miss Stafford too much - you can see his greatness - but never did put it all together and very inconsistent.
If I am UGA - I would not be concerned with Florida - as they are just way ahead of you. I would be concerned about Tennessee - I would say that this game is 50/50 in 2009 - and I think Kiffin will quickly pass UGA.
As for Bama - LSU is the competition. The winner of this game will rep the SEC West in Atlanta.
My bet is on BAMA!!!!
ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Bammer Stanley Thanks for gracing us with your infinite wisdom and insight. Really no reason for any of us to watch a college game again since you have so accurately predicted the future in Nostrodomus-like fashion. Just curious… you did predict Utah to bust Bammers mouth in the Sugar Bowl didn’t you ???

Hey Bama Stan-your post show what an ignorant azz you are-you can no more predict who is gonna win in the SEC-you were wrong on about half your recruiting picks-your clearly not a genius so listen up-The team that comes out of the east and west in the SEC could even have 2 losses.Fla will trip up somewhere just like the Ole Miss game this past year.Bama does not play UGA, until last year UGA beat Bama 3 or 4 in a row.Bama could lose to LSU or Ole Miss or both.I dont think Tenn or Auburn will challenge being in serious rebuilding mode.Bama could wind up 1st or 3rd in thier own division.Injuries will play major role for all SEC teams it always has.Leave the predictions to people that know more about SEC football than you-which means almost everyone.I thought after embarrasing the whole SEC in your bowl game you would shut up and go away until next year.Remember Bama Stan your only as good as your last game and Bamas was utterly Disgraceful.Have I said anything thats not true??Thats what I thought.

Hey bama stan…Kiffin and the media appointed “super staff of recruiters” lost the state of Tennesse’s two top recruits to the DAWGS…Much like Bama with Julio and the kid in this class, UGA has gotten 2 of the top 3 WR’s in the country the past 2 years…Murray/Mettenberger should have exceptional targets the next 2 years.

I forgot to state that if they do get arrested it won’t be for rape or drug dealing like at Tech. My bad.

Bama Stan congratulations on a great year. Too bad big Smith got hurt and the other OL in the bowl game. We can’t give you a hard time since we dealt with that all year long. Good insight. I do however think that Cox will do fine. He knows the offense and obviously has skills. Not the same arm as Staff but Cox is more of an athlete and the next DJ Shock coming. Great class and Garner really gave us some good insight of what to look forward to. Go DAWGS!

What is the point of these stupid comments sections anyway? It appears, just by glancing that it is a haven for losers who have nothing more than to bicker at each other like 11 year old retarded children, while using their teams as some sort of vehicle of self appointed superiority. Is it ever possible for anyone to actually comment on the story with at least an ounce of intelligence attached to it, or is this just the section where a bunch of ersatz frat boys who wear tight pleated Dockers go to feel as if waking up each day from their pathetic lives has some sort of meaning. I have a tip, read something more than the sports pages on some third rate newspaper, spend your energies on satisfying your wife before someone else fills your shoes there and update your resume. I can assure you that no matter what the AJCrap reports about anyone’s teams here, it wont make a bit of difference what you say and your stupid whining about what happened this past season or the last 25 seasons…and your wife will probably begin respecting you again.

I think maybe 3 or 4 of these guys will contribute next year. Abry, Branden,Brown,Mettenberg, am I the only one that thinks Mettenberg will be better than Murray? I think in a close battle this spring, Cox will win the position and if he struggles, Mettenberg will take the rains after the Tennessee game in knoxville.

Your not the only one. I love Murray and Mettenberger and I think both will be tremendous college QB’s. Mettenberger is more of a pocket passer and an NFL type QB, Murray is more college in the sense that he thrives under the spread attack.

Mettenberger is only 17, so technically he should be just a junior in HS. if he was, he’d be the top recruit in the country next year.
At 6’6” and 235 he’s only gonna get stronger. Hasnt really been able to lift weights yet due to back problems from growing so fast. Played only one year in a system that threw the football.. Should be interesting to watch the development there. I’d put money on the fact that now that stafford’s gone he could have the strongest arm in the conference. Just gotta reign him in!!

Wanna Talk about Inconsistency Bama you should look at your own team cuz bama is the most inconsistent team i have ever seen in the SEC. Georgia has always been good but now here lately we are becoming Great. YOU guys got lucky last year and your lucky you wont play us again this year unless its in the SEC championship were we will beat you guys just like florida did last season. I feel we were the more talented team last season and the year before and the year before that so keep talking smack. Your success changes just like the Tide!

Cox will have what it takes to lead this team - Logan Gray will be in when needed as a back up -
Cox has the leadership ability and M&M will do well to soak up the system and develop leadership skills for the next year. The QB battle will be in 2010 - Logan and M&M. Will be interesting -
LG could get utilized more in other positions/special situations - remember MR and company wanted to do more with him last year but decided it was too risky - Well Cox has more back up now - Look for something special to be put in for LG.

I also like Mettenberger a lot - with his size and big arm I think he will have shot down the road. Although i think this year Cox starts the whole way, barring injury. He has the experience of being in the program so long and also has seen game action. (i.e. - Colorado game - not easy to come in in the 4th quarter down 2 scores and lead a comeback - showed a lot of poise).

It’ll be great to see Joe Cox get his chance. He’s shown his loyalty and now it’s up to the coaching staff to return that loyalty. Don’t be surprised if we do really well with Cox at QB. He likes to win.

Chew on this
You’ll notice the most vitriol comments coming from the Georgia Tech bloggers who frequent UGA blogs in an effort to incite equally vitriol responses from the Bulldog fans.
I am not from Georgia and am not a Bulldog fan, but I do admire their coach and their football program as it has been rather good, lately. Living in Georgia and loving college football, appreciation for the only apparent “real” program, one whose fans seem to get it and act like they have been there before just comes with the territory.
The Georgia Tech fans who frequent these blogs are the apparent purveyors of hate and envy for the “real” Div.1 powerhouse in the state of Georgia.
Just an “outsiders-inside” observation.

As much as I think people think they will miss Matt and Moreno I tend to think both sort of drank the cool-aid if you know what I mean.
While they where very gifted athletes I’m not sure either had what it took to deliver week to week in the college environment. I think the pros will be better for both because of the seeming lack or emotional ups and downs in compared to the college game.
I think for CMR to regain some of the lost confidence the dogs really need to lay the wood to Florida and Tech.
That being said they really need to become a team that comes out of the gate swinging and put points up fast to take a little pressure off the defense.
Just my thoughts.

copdawg may be the only idiot on here who is close to being correct. Ole Miss done put out a class to go with the good coaching they had last year. Nutt is a good example of what ignorant fans can do to their football program. They let some QB kid’s mom trash their program. He tried pleasing them by hiring the jerk’s high school coach. It’s a tragedy we need to learn from when you unreasonably criticize the coach and staff. A lot of the crud last year came from a few Tech idiots and high schoolers. Richt remained strong in the miodst of it all. This year when you see anti staff remarks, don’t take the bait. Anyone posting crud against our coach’s staff is attacking our coach and your intelligence. Attach the posters. They are the enemy of your football program.
We wish this class all the best as well as the staff putting things together to form a team that will blow out our biggest rivals. We hope you are luckier than last year in the injury dept, but its a long way to fall kickoff. Some players got injured in practice doing their best and others didn’t get injured doing their best. You can’t shy away from it and put a great team on the field. They all take their chances and will again this year, but the fans have to be aware not to let others succeed in trashing your loyalty and reason when players go down. It’s a tough game and the team needs us pulling together if we expect them to pull together.
Once again the recruitment of these gifted athletes renews our hope eternal that they will all succeed beyond their’s and our wildest expectations and bond us tighter as The Bulldog Nation. They deserve our respect for choosing UGA and aspiring to become players that match their family’s dreams. And ours.
Once again I can’t wait.
The rejection of other suitors by members of Richt’s staff should convey the message that the staff is one in their belief that this is the best program in the country and they are staying together to finish the drill and bring another NC to us. “WOOF! WOOFWOOF!!

AJC Staff - Warner Robins is spelled with (1) b, not (2) as you have spelled it above next to Abry Jones.

How quickly we jump on a kid still in high school and forget who the people we signed before were when we signed them. I wish Rodney G would get on here, or Bobo, and talk about Joe Cox.
He was not a left-over coming out of high school. He was one of the top-rated QB’s in the nation.
He’s awfully good and a WHOLE lot better than people on here seem to be giving him credit for. If the response is, “Oh, yeah, then why didn’t he beat out Stafford?” my answer would be, “I’m not so sure that he didn’t.” Some folks in the UGA organization were, IMO, far too caught up in the hype over “The Cannon” to see how many times UGA was hurt by his poor decision making, poor fundamentals and apparent lack of leadership.
I know. Bring it on. That’s fine. We’ve all only got opinions and all are entitled. That’s what makes this so much fun (aside from the numbnuts who just like to sling trash at each other). Only point I’m making is Joe Cox is a hell of a quarterback and, my guess, he’s going to surprise a lot of people this Fall.

As a completely impartial observer who has no ties to either school, it appears to me that most of the infantile jabber comes from GA fans. In fact, it would appear to me that the only “real” college football program in the state. The UGA program is unconcerned with education and is in actuality a professional franchise and therefore should beat Tech every year. Instead, they struggle with academic institutions like Tech & Vanderbilt.
Just an observation from an impartial observer.

Aw, heck, who knows, its a recruiting class for goodness sake. Recruiting players is like getting a box of chocolates these days, you really don’t know what your getting ,until you get past the surface and see if they can really spell and read and do the right thing, like stay out of trouble and the whole thing that goes with the rules and regulations of college football. Yes, I am a georgia fan, and love the south, and root for every team from the south that plays a game in a bowl or against any other conference. That said, I’m sure everybody remembers when Peyton Manning was at Tennessee, and how he was so great, but, did’nt win a championship there, then sure enough low a behold one year later here comes some dude named Tee Martin. Remember him too? And what did he do? Oh just went out and played his tale off with his teamates and won a national championship. Whats my point, well I think joe cox has been a great team player, Ive seen him in person, met him, he is very smart, one heck of an athelete and you never know. But of course the defense would have to do its part.

According to our leader, they should all have an equal chance to qualify academically….. That is so funny! Is this not part of the recruiting process, to make sure they do qualify!!!

I feel UGA will be ok next season as long as COX or LG just manages the game, gets the ball in the hands of the playmakers, and does not try to be playmakers like John Elway and Michael Vick were. COX and LG should just assume that Drew Brees/Jake Delhomme role and UGA will be just fine. If the running game turns out to be ok, UGA will win the SEC barring injury. With this new crop of WR’s and TE’s, it will be difficult for opposing defeses to stop if the running game is on point.
The real question is who is now going to step up at RB? Caleb King ran last year like he was scared, and Samnuels is a beast but runs a little upright. This incoming freshman might be legit but he is just a freshman. We shall see. With the OLINE back at full strength it should be very exciting and much different from last year. UGA’s running game is the biggest x-factor for next season’s success or failure. And also WM has got to do a better coaching job than he did in 2008 since CMR is loyal to him for some unknown reason. I hope he blitzes more this year now that he’s getting JEFF OWENS back for one last hurrah. We shall see. GO DAWGS!!!!

Of ESPN’s top 20 players in the nation, ‘Bama signed 4. UGA signed 1. Put some lipstick on that pig, Rodney.

Since Saban has been at ‘Bama he has signed 6 players rated by ESPN as the very best players in the nation at their position. How many has UGA signed during that time? ZERO, BABY, ZERO. Send out for some more lipstick, Rodney.

This class is very good but not great. The thing I do like about it is that about 9 will play as freshman but not just special teams. Also 3 or 4 have not qualified but none of them look like they wont make it. I think Richt may have figured out one thing. You have to keep piling lineman into the system. Just when you think you have to many, you bring in 4 or 5 more. When lineman complain about to much competition and not enough playing time, you have done good. This in part is what made Tom Osborne successful in the 90s.

UGA bloggers on Tech Blogs
First of all, this is a UGA blog as it is talking about the recent signing class for the UGA program, so the fact that you have come on here as a direct response to Tech bloggers on UGA blogs only proves their point. You must be a Techster, and not some “impartial” observer as you claim. The hate and envy is very evident.
Also, UGA basically does beat Tech and Vandy every year. On occasion, the games are tighter than UGA would like, but that’s called competition.
When UGA beats another team by 3, it is mutually agreed that it was a close game. When Tech beats UGA by 3, it’s a “blowout”. Tell me which one is the “real deal” in Georgia when it comes to D-1 college football.

I agree with a few ofbulldog and TCM’s statements. First one being that a lot of people are forgetting about Logan Gray,I think he is the most athletic/versatile and therefore the most dangerous of the QB’s we have. He’s gotten lost in the hype over Mett and Murray.I would watch out for him, I like Cox’s leadership and I think he may prove to be the “Tee Martin” that checkthisout mentioned. I say this because Stafford almost seemed to consider UGA a waypoint. Not that he wasn’t good,he was,but I think that Cox really bleeds Red and Black and that may really pull up this teams level of play. That’s not a slam on Stafford either-just my view. The other observation that I agree with is that Caleb Kingran very tentatively, almost like he was scared to get hit. I was REALLY disappointed in what he showed on the field last year as I was really HYPED on seeing him based on his highlight films. He seemed more concerned about who was coming to hit him as opposed to gaining yardage…A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT to me thus far. Samuel runs like his momma is chasing him with a switch, but if he doesn’t learn to make himself smaller, Eric Berry will make the hit he put on Moreno look like a reacharound.and Samuel will be the African American Trent Green-concussed!!!.
Maybe it’s his tiger eyes, but Shawn Williams has a real evil look about him and I mean that in the best of ways…just looks like he wants to put people in the ground…not ON it mind you…IN IT!! Rashad Jones on eof my favorite players really didn’t do much at all last year which made his coming out idea somewhat foolish. I sdont know what it is,but he just wasn’t getting it done. This year my target players will be Carlton Thomas (good feeling about him), Rashad Jones and Logan Gray and Marcus Dowtin (Impressed by his speed and hitting). Go DAWGS!!!!!!!

BAMA HAS ONE GOOD YEAR IN THE 2000’S AND THEIR FANS INSTANTLY THINK THEY’LL BE A DYNASTY. IN CASE YOU FORGOT, WE BEAT BAMA IN ‘07. OH AND HOW ABOUT YOUR SUGAR BOWL PERFORMANCE… LOSERS!
This is a solid class for Georgia with no defections, which in today’s recruiting environment is something to shout about.

And another thing Mr chew on this.. that’s what real men do in the south we talk football and drink beer. There is no off season only a period without games. If you don’t like the blog stay the hell off of it. I would have a beer with an idiot like bama stan than a pu$$y like you. I’m going to leave you with some lyrics by Zack Brown son.
I raised underneath the shade of a georgia pine. that’s home you know. sweet tea , peacan pie and homemade wine where the peaches grow. You know I like my chicken fried. Cold beer on friday night a pair of jeans that fit just right and my radio up. I like to see the sun rise see the love in my womans eyes feel the touch of my precious child and know a mothers love..
Bottom line dude you need to go back to your yankee row house and shovel snow off your three foot driveway if you don’t like football blogs. Oh I forgot your mother says hell too. Go Dawgs Congrats on a great class. Brown is a stud !!!
