Why Georgia Tech didn’t make a late push for Tennessee RB Tate
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Georgia Tech recruiting coordinator Giff Smith admitted on Wednesday that the Jackets’ staff liked running back Wesley Tate of Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville, Tenn., but they preferred to hold back a scholarship at that position for next year’s class.
The Jackets have received a commitment from Collins Hill junior running back Charles Perkins during Junior Day last weekend.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Tate signed with Vanderbilt on Wednesday.
“We brought [Tate] in on a visit, so we were obviously serious about him,” Smith said. “But that wasn’t a need position, or one we felt like we had to take another kid at.
“We would have been happy to have him, but we know what the state has next year and we’d like to have a little bit more than what we had initially with 12 [scholarships for the class of 2010]. So we didn’t push for it.
“He’s a great kid, though, and I wish him the best.”

No, No, NO! You got it all wrong. Tech only accepts the “smart” athletes so this kid had to “settle” for Vanderbilt. Probably couldn’t do that super tough tech “calculus”. Perhaps he slipped up and just mentioned visiting Vandy and the scholly got “rescinded”. Come on guys, get your facts right.

Tate wanted to play big boy football in the SEC. He wasn’t interested in SETTLING with a mediocre ACC team that got destroyed by a 5 loss SEC team in the worst Chick-fil-a Bowl in history. The Cracker Jack rings probably weren’t a strong selling point either. But hey, you still got the rapist on your team for next year. So smile :)

Dear Hold back that scholarship,
VAndy’s academics are not nearly as strong as you might think. The SAT’s of GT’s incoming freshment is much higher than Vanderbilt’s. In fact, Vandy’s SAT’s are only slightly better than UGA, but the diploma sure is worth more. Your UGA defense should get to see Tate from behind often next year.

Hey Georgia Boys, recruiting is over, now why don’t you just shut the heck up until next November, and let’s see if you can do in ‘09, what you couldn’t in ‘08. As far as records go, the only one on the board now is CPJ 1, CMR 0, and it will take you 2 years to move ahead of this. Sorry, guess that is too much math.

I could be wrong, but didn’t the “mediocre ACC team” teabag the puppies in their backyard? 45-42 b*tches! Puppies couldn’t beat CPJ with the #1 pick in the NFL draft playing QB and a 1st round pick at RB. Good luck with Joe Coxsucker! And good luck with Caleb King who can’t block anybody. What about the great Richard Samuel? Us Tech fans love him. Hopefully he will get a lot playing time so he can fumble it back to us. Face it, you had the best UGA team in terms of talent since early 80s and you couldn’t beat a bunch of freshman and sophomore Tech team. It’s only going to get worse for you. You shot your load in August 2008 when SI put “Who will challenge the dogs” on the cover and its downhill ever since.

For Gods sake, will you Techie quit picking on the UGAers. It really can’t be that much fun when dealing with such low IQs. Kind of like their recruits that will struggle with the SAT.

The ACC sucks. What are you now, 2-9 in BCS games?

You’re still Tech Never forget that. You will return to your bottom feeding mediocrity next year. With Butch Davis coaching and recruiting at UNC it is almost a guarantee that you won’t ever again sniff even a ACC Division title, much less championship. With UNC, VT, Wake, and UGA on your schedule next year you have 4 certain losses right there. Your 1 win a decade over UGA is all used up and Davis/Beamer own your sissy little butts. Groh can outcoach Paul Johnson every time out, so there you go. PJ’s sorry recruiting classes aren’t helping either. You guys are soooooo lucky that Chan Gailey left you what talent you have, as thin as that may be. Chan Gailey has made PJ look like a much better coach than he really is.

Hey, churck Allison, so now your dissing on Vandy’s adacemics? LMAO. Are you one of those tech geniuses? Let’s see, you said “The SAT’s of GT’s incoming freshment is much higher than Vanderbilt’s.” “freshment is”??? LMAO. Yeah, you guys are the smart ones.
Why not compare SATs of incoming athletes? Why not compare the graduation rate of their football and basketball players to those at Tech? I have no idea what the results would be, but you might be surprised churcky boy.
By the way, nice first name there “churck”. Kind of rhymes with “jerk”.

I am Wesley Tate’s mother and I am commenting on the the story, “Why Georgia Tech didn’t make a late push for Tennessee RB” dated February 5th. The fact is Coach Spencer heavily recruited Wesley for several weeks. Coach Spencer contacted me several times repeatedly requesting a visit. I declined the invitation to visit and I advised Coach Spencer that we had other schools who had offered that we planned to visit instead … and hence, Coach Johnson offer a scholarship to Wesley. I will be more than happy to provide the scholarship offer letter that was faxed to my job as proof. During our official visit, Coach Johnson told me eye to eye that the scholarship was his to take and that they needed a “big back”. On the same night that we returned home from the visit Wesley contacted GT and declined the scholarship offer. The reason he declined the scholarship offer was because of the depth in RB’s and that he still did not have strong interest in GT. We would not have traveled to Atlanta on an official visit if a scholarship had not been offered. After seeing this article, I am more sure that Wesley made the right decision. Vanderbilt is a school of character and intigrity … Thank You

Thank you Yolanda Tate. It’s about time someone slapped down some of these GT hypocrites. Their holier than thou charade has been disproven not only by police blotters and NCAA academic probations, but now by a recruits mom as well. Thank you Yolanda. I predict before long that a lot more of this type thing will occur on Paul Johnson’s watch He’s the biggest hypocrite of them all.

Mrs. Tate you are a wonderful woman and your son, as you know, made a very wise decision. Georgia Yech hasn’t had character since Bobby Dodd. Look at some of the violent criminals and felons they have had on their rosters, and still do, that they have played without so much as batting an eye. Vandy is a wonderful school, community and has HIGH CHARACTER, something you wouldn’t find at Yech.
If your son is serious about being a WELL ROUNDED, STUDENT ATHLETE then Vandy was by far the best decision for him. Not to mention he’ll be going up against the best competition that the college level has to offer on the football field. Not the leftovers you’d find in the ACC.
Your son is about the 70th kid to tell Yech no thanks and has opted for the SEC instead. This trend has been the case for decades and will continue.

You can tell from the deafening silence on this blog that the techies know their recruiting class sucks. See the handwriting on the wall yet guys? The great PJ will show you how to get your azzes handed to you by large margins, lets say 35 point ones about 4 times next year. I hope you guys don’t waste the dimes in your piggy banks on Tech season tickets. Those ticks are going to give you a horrible ROI.

All of Navy’s recruiting classes sucked too. Somehow they were able to beat people a lot better than them. Also, we are getting these recruit ratings from people WHO DONT COACH FOOTBALL! I coach high school football and coached against Julian Burnett last year. He isn’t ranked on Rivals but besides Jarvis Jones, there isn’t a better LB in the state. You can take those rankings a flush em. By the way, hadn’t Notre Dame had a high recruiting class the last few years?

Exactly right Les Miles,
Ever since UGA landed Marlon Brown the toolbags from North Ave. have been completely silent. They thought they really pulled one over on UGA with Hill, just to learn that the CLASSY Coach Richt had called him the night before and thanked him for his commitment, only to inform that the real receiver was coming to town and if he wants to play he might want to go else where.
Yechies are so easy to control on here. They’re all emotion, zero logic.

Mrs. Tate-Just wanted to say you and Golden have raised two fine young men, I am very happy for you. Vandy is a fine school, as I am sure that like me, your concern is your son’s future. My son plays in the SEC also, so always view him as a student that plays football, not a football player that goes to college. College football is a money making meat market, much different than when Golden and I were in college. My kid will finish with his masters degree, so make sure your kids are constantly reminded why they are in college, and the reasons why it is tuition free. Even though our kid has excelled in football, his graduation date is more important than the NFL grade he received. Congrats and good luck, tell Golden I will see him next week when I come to nashville. Go Irish, Go Vandy, Go Vols, and Go TSU!

Mr. Hold back that scholarship. I’d like to enlighten you with a little information about my son who you clearly know nothing about. Wesley Tate scored very high on ACT, holds a 3.3 overall GPA, he is currently taking Statistics (a math class in case you didn’t know) maintaining a 97.5, works two jobs (one is community service) AND participates in sports year round. Please research prior to making these types of comments about someone else’s son/daughter in the future. Best regards!

Mrs. Tate- No one is talking bad about your son, hes a great young man, would have loved to have had him at GT. The article even SAYS that we were serious about him. He chose Vandy, and I wish him luck there. Hold Back That Scholarship is a uga fan, that makes disparaging remarks about all things GT (he was being sarcastic with his first post), and you shouldn’t pay him any attention. In fact, you probably shouldn’t pay much attention to anyone on these blogs, b/c they are not monitored, and just turn into name calling and offensive statements at some point.

Mrs. Tate.
I apologize for any misunderstanding. I was not disparaging your son’s intelligence in any way. I happen to be a fan of Vanderbilt and I’m sure your son will be successful in both the classroom and on the field.
My comment was drenched in sarcasm. Whenever Tech is turned down by a potential recruit their fans public line is either “we didn’t want him anyway”, or “he didn’t have the grades to get into Tech”.
This obviously wasn’t the case with your son. He found a better fit and it will obviously serve him better in the long run.

I think if everyone slowed down and re-read Giff’s comments, you would notice that he said that GA Tech never pushed for it rather than GA Tech never offered a scholarship. There’s a big difference.
This means that GA Tech offered, and would have loved to have Wesley join the team, but didn’t push him/recruit him as hard as Vandy did because of next year’s Class and GA Tech’s limited number of scholarships they’ll have available to use for them.
Ms. Tate has spoken nothing but speak the truth and deserves nothing but respect, yet she’s been subjected to the postings of brats who have nothing better to do than call each other names.
Wesley’s a great kid and will do very well at Vandy and I wish him the very best.

Ms. Tate- I would blame how the AJC reported it, more than I would blame the GT staff. It seems like GT Observer has it right on. We wanted him, but he chose Vandy, and instead of further pursuit, we decided to wait until next years class (plus it sounds like he is pretty committed to Vandy, so it wouldn’t have worked anyways). Either way, hes got a bright future, and you did a great job. You have a good weekend as well.

Only but for the grace of God, Rashad Jones, and Stafford’s pick 6 it’s 8 in a row. You tech girls know in your hearts that it’s back to normal next year.
