Vols’ Kiffin apologizes for accusing Florida’s Urban Meyer of “cheating” in recruiting

Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin apologized for accusing Florida coach Urban Meyer of violating recruiting rules in pursuing wide receiver prospect Nu’Keese Richardson.

“At an energetic breakfast with some of our donors and alumni I made a statement that was solely meant to excite the crowd,” Kiffin said in a statement. “If I offended anyone at the University of Florida, including Mr. Foley and Urban Meyer, I sincerely apologize. That was not my intention.”

Kiffin was reprimanded by the SEC.

WVLT-TV reported that Kiffin told a group of fans at a signing day breakfast celebration Thursday morning that Meyer phoned Richardson while the recruit was making his official visit to Tennessee recently.

Richardson, a Pahokee, Fla, native, signed with the Volunteers on Tuesday, despite having indicated he would sign with the Gators.

Kiffin told the crowd, “I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn’t get him.”

The SEC office has told the stupid jerk Kiffen to shut the hell up!! I hope the crimson tide and the gators and everybody else in the sec beats the holy crap out of the vols. Fulmer was a low life to, but he would never call out the head coach of the national championship team. The old ball coach was a jerk in the 90’s, but he could back it up with the smack talk. Kiffen is just a liar just like Al Davis says he was!! UT JUST BECAME THE MOST HATED SCHOOL IN THE SEC TODAY!!

Meyer cheating? Say it ain’t so. Within 3 years you’ll see a major NCAA investigation of the Florida Football program launched. Something just isn’t right down there. But I will agree this new Tennessee Coach is more of a bellyacher than Phillbilly.

Fulmer was actually a stand up guy. He would not call out a coach as Kiffen did especially when the facts don’t appear to support his claim. Also, Fulmer “earned” the right to do that if he had wanted to. The difference is that he had more sense to do it.Remember it was not soley Fulmer who turned Bama in. It was Nutt,Donnan, and Spurrier. The only reason got “credit” for it was because UT played Bama every year unlike Donnan and Spurrier.

“Fulmer was a stand up guy” That is hilarious. Perhaps you missed the story a few years back where Phil told a recruit don’t go to a school because one of it’s coaches is sleeping with your mom. It is in the court transcripts feel free to look it up. Yeah that Fulmer was certainly a class act. I wonder what kind of number Florida puts on Tenn this year - can’t wait.

Granted, Kiffin shoudn’t use that platform to accuse anybody, but fact is, Urban is not exactly a class-act guy. But, what goes ‘round comes ‘round. I’m a dawg so I have a “dog in the fight”….but I guarrantee you this….no team in our conference will dominate for awhile like UF has the last few years. UT, UGA, LSU and UA are all VERY silmilar now. It’s going to come down to injuries and execution, as to who the SEC champ is for the next few years.

Kiffin needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. I wonder if some of the powers to be at UT are wondering what in the heck is this guy doing? Some things are just better kept to yourself. I bet Urban Crier will put up 60 points on him. You know he is fuming right now. He may be telling the truth, who knows? But, not in a public forum. I find it ironic that he brags about his recruiting prowess and he did not even get the top two players in his own state. The SEC is loaded and he may find life at UT is similar to the Raiders if he keeps going off on other programs. Look at the top 25 recruiting classes. The SEC just reloaded. My hat is off to the guy at Auburn. In a short time he did better than anyone could have thought of and Nutt at Ole Miss is going to have some kind of team in a year or two. Saban had a great year and Les Miles may have the best class in the nation. The west is going to a tough division. The ole ball coach had a decent year as well.

Now I think Al Davis was right about Kiffin not just being a liar but also incredibly immature. The first day or 2 he insults Spurrier, then he took a shot at literally every other sec staff when he said his staff was superior to any other staff in the conference. He also got in a shot at Saban during the same meeting this morning but it wasn’t prominently mentioned because the charge towards meyer was much more serious. The idiot also stated in his first few days that he would be singing rocky top all night long after the vols beat florida next year in the swamp. This loose cannon is embarrassing. A month on the job and this guy is the village idiot of the sec.

As for Fulmer he handled himself with great class in public. Behind the scenes he was quite a nefarious character. Just ask Johnny Majors. Fulmer lobbied UT officials for major’s job way back while majors was laying in a hospital bed recovering from a heart attack. To this day Majors loves UT but has a major problem with Fulmer and one other UT person who helped Fulmer stab him in the back for the head coaching job.

Oh, and about that little ncaa thing involving Bama in which Fulmer was the “secret witness”, Tom Culpepper, the other “secret witness” who helped Fulmer promulgate lies about one major violation involving kenny smith said Fulmer promised him the recruiting coordinator job at UT for helping him. The deal fell through, Fulmer and Culpepper started accusing each other of lying, and their “secret testimony” to the NCAA was contradictory. One or both of them was lying at least some if not all of the time. Lastly, the player Kenny Smith later came out and sued Fulmer for demation among other things and stated that after he transferred from Bama to UT that Fulmer pressured him into saying things about Bama’s recruitment of him that were simply false. This is the Phillip Fulmer that we know from various court documents and testimony. UT just traded one dirtbag for another.

And no, this isn’t just sour grapes from a Bama fan. The 2 bama boosters were guilty as hell for trying to get Albert Means by giving money to his coaches to steer him to Bama. Its the proven falsehoods revealed later in court documents and “secret testimony” that Fulmer concocted about Kenny Smith’s recruitment which that we have a problem with.

Kiffin is obviously ignorant of the rules but does not have the common sense to check facts before making a very serious allegation. He is gaining a reputation early which will bring nothing good to UT.

He did not even have the nominal amount of class required to make a sincere apology for his completely inappropriate statements. He will reap what he has sowed.

By Kiffin kiddie

February 5, 2009 6:10 PM | Link to this

It would be different if Kiffin just screwed up once. But he has already made several disparaging and idiotic statements about other coaches like Spurrier, Saban, and now meyer a couple of times. And to flat out call someone a cheater in public is just ridiculous. What on earth was this fool thinking? How in the hell does he expect other coaches to know where all the different recruits are at any point in time? And maybe kid Kiffin needs to brush up a little bit on the rules before he goes insulting spurrier on the ncaa recruiting rules his first day or 2 on the job. This kid is unbelievable. And to think he is an sec coach at a major school like UT. That’s just crazy. He is definitely gonna reap what he sows. Count on it. If 3 or 4 of his rival coaches are all recruiting the same player as Kiffin you can count on them saying that if the recruit doesn’t choose their school then he should choose anybody but UT. Mark my words. Its gonna come back on Kiffin.

The SEC commissioner said it best:

“Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics”. SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players.

“The phone call to which Coach Kiffin referred to in his public comments is not a violation of SEC or NCAA rules. We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules.”

Our entire society is more concerned with soundbites than they are substance. Coaches should keep their mouths shut and coach. Players should keep their mouths shut and play. They should let their actions on the field and in the classroom, and how they comport themselves in life do their talking. Oh, but wait… what would happen to sports talk radio if it weren’t for these bozos shooting off their mouths (and guns) and screwing up their personal and professional lives.

Dudes…I am sure Meyer called Nu’Keese at UT because of all the negative crap Kiffin has said about Meyer and the U of F when he was trying to steal the Gator recruits. Florida and several other SEC teams have already reported possible recruiting violations by Kiffin during the recruiting process…so what does Kiffin do…he calls Meyer a cheat. Well, I have news for you Kiffin, Meyer runs about as clean a program as possible up. Plus, Jeremy Foley, the AD, will not tolerate any hint of a recruiting violation by any Florida coach, including Urban Meyer. You Georgia fans can say whatever you like, we Gator fans know the true Character of Urban Meyer. More importantly, the Florida players TOTALLY admire and respect Urban Meyer as a coach. They ALL go to war for him…and that is one reason he has won two national championships in the last 3 years. And, by the way, so has the Florida basketball program. I guess Donavan has no character and cheats, too? And by the way, Kiffin, NuKeese Robinson would have been 4th or 5th on the depth chart at WR at Florida. He will probably start for you. Think, Florida 70 and Tennessee 10 next year in Gainesville…and Meyer may save all 4 time outs for the last minute of the game to again make a point to coaches who try to show the Gators up.

I can understand wanting to pump up your team and supporters, but Kiffin has proven that when you try to do it at someone else’s expense, it’s usually your butt that ends up in the sling. I’d like to see some dignity, ethics and restraint put back in sports, especially on the high school and college level. Set an example for these kids. It’s no wonder so many athletes are out of control and end up ruining their lives.

You SEC people are hilarious. So if Kiffin keeps his mouth shut, as opposed to all the trash he’s already talking, THEN Fla. or Bama wouldnt have run the score up on Tenn when they play this season?? Please!

The system dictates that you run the score up on your opponents so you look good when you need votes at the end of the year. This is why Bammer and Fla will contend for future MNC’s, and UGA won’t.

By bama12titles

Jimmy,

You must not have watched the Bama-UT game. We didn’t run the score up on them. We only won 29-9. We dominated the game much worse than the score indicated but we didn’t try to run the score up. If I remember correctly we ended the game inside the UT 10 yard line and just let the clock run out rather than tacking on another meaningless score.

As a matter of fact we were criticized the whole year for close games and for not winning by blowout style points. We had games like Ole Miss and Kentucky where we jumped out to big leads like 24-0 over Ole miss and then just played ultra conservative in the 2nd half and let them score tds in the last few minutes to give the appearance of a close game. But we did not just go out and run up the score on anyone.

First of all, If Urban Meyer and the Gators cheat then so does everybody else, including the beloved bulldawgs. Which to a certain extent I’m sure they all do (at least the boosters).

Secondly, I hope Mr. Kiffin keeps on running his mouth about Florida and everybody else. If he is going to talk the talk then he better be ready to walk the walk. Come September he will get his first taste of what SEC football is all about.

And finally, do you dawg fans really thing that Mark Richt doesn’t call recruits while they are visiting other schools? If you do then you are sadly mistaken. Hellloo! It is not against the rules and recruiting is a cut throat business. If you don’t have the horses then your not going to be able compete in the SEC.

First of all, awesome job, Lane Kiffin! Secondly, where was this outrage when Spurrier publicly and falsely accused Kiffin of contacting recruits before he officially could. It went away after Kiffin fired back. He didn’t act like a b** and run to his A.D. to force Spurrier to apologize. He told SOS what his recruiting test score was (39 out of 40…he probably missed the one about it being legal and fine to call recruits when they’re visiting another school).

Now, if the Gators or Bulldogs or Tahd or whoever wants to get their panties in a wad, fine. Sure Kiffin is talking big, and he above anybody else knows how it’ll be taken. You don’t think he knows that every breath CUMeyer takes between now and Sept. he’ll be thinking of Lane Kiffin and Tennessee. Florida probably will run up the score as much as they can this year…big deal. They took their foot off the gas against UT last year, and there’s no way that’ll happen again.

Hell, if anything, Gator fans ought to be saying prayers thanking Kiffin for today. Meyer’s huge ego will keep him at UF a little longer than he’d planned now. He’ll put Notre Dame on hold for a few extra years to try to get back at Kiffin.

But, I digress. Kiffin sent a shot across the bow, obviously in jest, to Meyer and Satan and Richt and LessMiles all today. He is not the same guy as the weak kneed Volunteer leader who played it safe and conservative and lost a considerable chunk of his legacy losing to his rivals much more often than any Tennessee coach should.

No, this guy is trying to light a fire under a listless fanbase and his own team. When you go after the best coaches your rivals have, and the best recruits your rivals seek, you step on toes. He doesn’t have the luxury of playing it safe and being a whipping boy just because he just got to the party. Gator fans understand my point better than anyone.

This mornings’ revival meetings across the state of Tennessee were for us, not you guys. Sorry, if the joke was a little harsh, but you know if Kiffin really thought a violation was committed, he’d have called Meyer on it personally. The fact that UT had no intention of turning it in should have been a clue, but then where’s the story in that.

So, thank god you all hate us again. It’s better than being irrelevant. The wins will come soon. Then, you can really have a reason to hate us.

Kiffin is writing checks with his mouth that his team can’t cash.

The end of the story is twofold:

Kiffin told Richardson to LIE to Meyer about whether he was on an official visit,.

And then he took Richardson’s phone during the basketball game and was texting Richardson’s HS coach and guardian as if here were Richardson.

Kiff has serious maturity issues. He’s a time bomb waiting to go off and, for once, it appears that Al Davis is correct.

Kiffin will do anything to make UT relevant in the SEC again, including lie, pretend he’s someone else and tell a kid to lie.

I guarantee you the UT game is already circled on his calender. The UF players will have to run the stadium steps backwards 320 times holding a telephone in each hand. Cum is known(lovingly by gator fans) for style points and last second timeouts. I predict UF scores 80 points and with 20 seconds remaining in the game calls 2 timeouts. The only thing CUM needs to remember is “what goes around comes around” and his “day in the barrel”will come. It won’t come from CMR-wish it would—he has to much class. As a TN fan, I love Kiffin taking a shot at the biggest bully on the school yard. What is going to happen? FL beats TN by 50…almost already happened under Fulmer. This guy is the complete opposite of Fulmer. Every other team and coach (Spurrier, Meyer) threw verbal jabs at Fulmer and he never responded. Now Kiffin is taking the fight to them. SEC recruiting is dirty and we all know that. Should Kiffin have used the word “cheat”…no…but he was at least calling Urban out for a bush league move. Lane Kiffin is an idiot. He is going to be lucky to have a job in three years. I used to strongly dislike Al Davis but this whole show put on by Kiffin has made me reconsider what I initially thought. This guy comes in to a s** Tennessee team and thinks he can run his mouth to one of the, if not the best program and coach in college football. And guaranteeing a win in Florida? Is this guy serious? Being a UGA fan, I ironically want Florida to beat them mercilessly. There are ways to be enthusiastic and to rev up your team for another unsuccesssful season, but this is far from it. And all you UT fans on here supporting him, well that’s about as much support as he’s going to get this year. Welcome to the SEC, Lane.

Yes Kiffen got the rule incorrect, so what? The bigger issue here is why the heck did God’s gift to football, Urban Cryer, have to take up his recruiting weekend to keep tabs on one of his commits who had gone to visit another school? Is he that ANAL? Didn’t he have any recruits that weekend on campus to talk to? I think it is time someone had the balls to stand up to that whiney punk. Also with Tennessee’s defense, aint no way the Gators put up 70 points next year…I think they will win the game, but won’t be a blow out. UF sucks…

Urban’s new best seller will be titled “Crying Again”, detailing Lane Kiffen’s hurtful accusations of Meyer’s recruiting violations. The book is a follow up to Meyer’s autobiographical account of how Georgia’s end zone dance helped make him the crier that he is today.

….unfortunately for Gator Haters, in other future news, Florida wins its 3rd national championship in 4 years, but Georgia, Bama, and the rest of the SEC are at peace after first year coach Kiffen leads the Vols to a winless 0-12 season.

Man- Lane Kiffin I think made a huge mistake. When UGA had our endzone celebration it fueled Gators and we paid for it this past year. The rivalry was already nasty enough.Kiffin will learn or be gone soon.I dont think Gators hang 100 on Vols but 70 is certainly possible.Tebow will be throwing late in the 4th qtr.Dont like Vols or Gators but I can see this one coming.I think UGA strategy helped us in the 2007 game vs Gators but hurt us for 2008.We had 24 players with major injuries by the end of oct and Fla took it out on us bigtime.Kiffin coaching out west will learn that in the SEC it is a different world.Meyer will bring this up every week until kickoff vs Vols.

First, just a big “THANK YOU” to whoever the AD is at UT for hiring Kiffin.

As a Gator, UT games had become, to be honest, a Saturday afternoon of Vern Lundquist calling “Touchdown Tebow” and a lot of pity. Ol’ Phil over there on the sidelines just looking like he wanted to crawl under the covers and eat a box of glazed donuts every time Harvin or somebody smoked one of his Top 5 recruits was tuggin at my heart strings. Being up 3 or 4 scores at the half had lost its luster.

But then UT goes and does many of us in the SEC right and brings in a RINGER. I mean, if there were services like Rivals for coaches, he’d sure be a 5 star. Let’s list his attributes:

  • Just dumb as hell. I mean, rocks for brains dumb. Never was anything more than a position coach at USC and then got the head coaching job in the NFL, albeit, the Psycho ward called Oakland. Won about 25% of his games and called players out in the media.
  • Has the highest ratio in the SEC, maybe all of big time college ball of mouth size/accomplishments. Spurrier, God love him, has a big mouth but his cracks are usually factually accurate and funny. Oh, btw, he has a bunch of SEC rings and one NC. So his ratio is about 1:1. Kiffin’s is about, infinity, since the denominator is zero.
  • Who Kiffin aims his barbs at is pure genuis. It’s one thing to have a big mouth, another to aim them at Spurrier, Meyer and Saban! He could have picked on Dan Mullen or even poor Sylvester Croom on his way out the door. Kiffin, you’re going to make playing UT fun again. Forget the pity.
  • The boy just talks funny. He has no sense of timing. His intro press conf and even the event where he talked about recruiting were just cringers that you just feel uncomfortable watching him. You’re embarrassed for him.
  • Finally, his wife is HOT and I’ll enjoy that eye candy for as long as he’s around. Way to go on that point, Kiffin!

The bigger issue is that Kiffin’s mouth is going to consistently reflect poorly on UT.

why should he keep his mouth shut? If Urban was cheating then he should call him out on it. I don’t care if they are the reigning NC. Unless someone says something about it instead of sweeping it under the rug like the NCAA always does then why do we even have rules! They aren’t going to abide by them and neither should anyone else if UF can get away with it.

To hear Davis talk, Kiffin couldn’t tell the truth about anything. All he did was spew BS at people. He couldn’t take responsibility for any of his mistakes, he’d publicly criticize other coaches on his staff, he exhibited erratic behavior as a coach and as a manager, he had the whole organization in turmoil, he engaged in petty power plays with no discernible purpose and he made excuses on a constant basis that Davis felt were designed to make him out to be the victim when he did get fired for losing. Kiffin also was job-shopping from the day he got to Oakland, which probably didn’t endear him to a guy who hired him as an NFL head coach when he was totally unqualified for such a position.

And according to Davis, the first thing out of Kiffin’s mouth when Davis called him in and fired him - for cause, as Davis said - was whether he was going to get paid a buyout.

    This was six months ago.

Kiffin has been crowing about this great coaching staff he put together, and while they’ve got some big salaries it’s not like they’re this incomparable group of superstars. Lance Thompson, Eddie Gran, Frank Wilson and David Reaves are supposed to be pretty good recruiters, but I’ve yet to hear anybody accuse them of being quality developers of talent or X’s and O’s geniuses. And while Kiffin’s father, who must be semi-retired if he couldn’t put a stop to this week’s embarrassing behavior on the part of his boss/son, certainly has a reputation as a good defensive coordinator I’d never even heard of this Jim Chaney guy who’s the offensive coordinator there. Maybe Chaney is just a figurehead and Kiffin will call the offensive plays, but if you watch Davis’ press conference it’s not like that was such a winner of an idea in Oakland.

In other words, this guy is a train wreck in the making. He’s got no resume, he’s showing his rear end like no coach I can remember and he’s making enemies faster than anybody I’ve ever seen.

And let’s not forget - the SEC is a MAN’S league. This is a conference where guys like Tommy Tuberville, Phil Fulmer and Houston Nutt get run off and can’t go the distance. This is no place for spoiled children living off daddy’s resume, and it’s no place for your mouth writing checks your butt can’t cash. Kiffin is also going to find that poking people like Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Mark Richt and Nick Saban, who are on his schedule every year, with a stick is an uncommonly stupid idea.

Two things are going to happen here. First, Kiffin will be the recipient of some of the most sensational episodes of running up a score this fall that you’ll ever see. What Meyer will do to him in the Swamp will transcend the medieval and take us all the way back to the Bronze Age. And if his daddy doesn’t have a good defensive game plan he’s going to find that Spurrier, Richt and Saban won’t let up on him, either.

The second thing Kiffin will bring down on Tennessee is the loss of that good relationship Fulmer had with the league office, which helped to protect the old coach from some of the damage the Vols - or Mountain Gumps, as the case may be -might have otherwise suffered when Fulmer got into the NCAA fracas with Alabama over the Albert Means thing. When Kiffin plays these cute recruiting tricks on all these schools around the SEC and the word gets out about the stuff Orgeron and the others are doing, it will not be long before Slive offers UT up as a sacrificial lamb to the NCAA in an effort to keep the Gestapo from descending on the league and gutting it like the old Southwest Conference. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and Kiffin is a prime candidate to be greased by Indianapolis - with nobody crying for him.

You can get away with hijinks on the recruiting trail so long as you can keep up appearances. But when you start accusing people of breaking the rules and bragging about how you skirted them, what you’ll find is that nobody will give you a break.

How was Urban supposed to know where all the recruits are visitng each weekend, he’s busy trying to keep contact with his recruits that have been committed for months and trying to fill out his class. Babe Kiffin needs to have his daddy screen his comments. Turns out that Kiffin success was due to telling recruits that had verbally commited at other schools that they ought to call the coaches they had committed to and ask if they’d be guaranteed to start and Urban won’t make a promise like that. He promises if a freshman works hard in practice and studies and proves they’re as good or better than the starters, they will get to play as freshman. Babe Kiffin is willing to lie, Urban isn’t! Babe will be gone in 3 years and Urban will still be having new cases made for trophies.

At the rate he is sticking his foot in his mouth, schools will need to add bill board space for all the remarks. I have feeling that it will be a rude awakening to the SEC. Before making statements like he has I would check and make sure I was doing EVERYTHING PERFECT.

Kiffin will learn,as Richt did, that it is not good to make Coach Meyer angry. Kiffin is the biggest joke in the SEC. I am glad that Dawg fans hate the Gators; if you were beating us every year you would not hate the Gators. The Gators would probably also hate any team that had beaten them 16 out of the last 19 games. All of the dawgs fans call Meyer classless for the two timeouts; Kiffin will learn as Richt did that paybacks are hell.Meyer has won two National Championships in 4 years at Florida; what has Kiffin or Richt won? The Gators will be ready for all of you next year.

Kiffin should not have used the word “cheating” about me but “unethical” would have been more appropriate! After all just look at all the lies I have promised these recruits like telling Brown he would catch first ball and play every down this fall—-and the dummie fell for it lol, lol.

As for Kiffin, this is what he does to his recruits: UT coach Lane Kiffin told two quarterbacks for the 2009 class that they wouldn’t be a good fit for his system. Both de-committed. Now how dumb is that—-telling the truth to a recruit???? Dumb Kiffin!!!
