Tech’s Johnson: Recruiting of Stephen Hill got ‘crazy’

Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson admits the last-minute drama involving wide receiver Stephen Hill got ”crazy” but said he never panicked that the Miller Grove player would sign with Georgia on Wednesday.

Hill committed to Tech last week but said Tuesday night he wasn’t sure if he would sign with Tech or Georgia. Hill was among the first Tech commits to send in his signed scholarship early Wednesday.

“It got crazy in the end, and some stuff went on that probably shouldn’t have gone on,” Johnson said. “I told his dad this morning, ‘This is a 40-year decision, not a four-year decision.’ We feel he did the right thing.”

Johnson said he didn’t blame other schools for continuing to recruit a player after he was committed to another program.

“It’s a trust thing,” Johnson said. “We always tell them, ‘If you commit, you’re telling me you’re sure you’re coming here.’ ”

Johnson also said that Tech had three scholarships available that it didn’t offer because he wants to ensure Tech can have a signing class of at least 12 players in 2010.

Johnson said the team will lose only six scholarship seniors next season, leaving room for only between 12 and 16 spots for next season’s class.

Why didn’t he pull his scholly like he did the kid from Florida’s?

Todd, I’d like to hear a little more from Coach Johnson about the Ayecock decision. Will there be time to do a whole article on it? I’ve never heard of a coach telling a player that if he went on another campus visit he would lose his offer.

Yeah! gt signed a receiver who will now catch a total of 13 passes his entire career.. bad move Hill. Or maybe he just realized his playing time would be hard to get at UGA with the talent at wide receiver already there.

This is a 40-year decision, not a four-year decision.’

It’s good old fashion common sense like this that gives me faith that CPJ is the right man in the right place at the right time.

It has been crazy w/ Hill, it’s been very nerve-wracking as a GT fan, but glad to see that he’s gonna come to Tech, I assumed w/ the way the article was last night that it was at least 60% he’d go to UGA, but the Athens Urinal Constipation is not an objective source of info, they are so in love w/ UGA that they will do their best to to get the players to switch & make any article sound like he’s definitely going to UGA.

PAUL, DID YOU GIVE A COMMITTMENT TO THE PLAYERS AT NAVY? IF SOMETHING BETTER COMES ALONG HOW CAN YOU BLAME A KID NOT TO TAKE IT. IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET INTO THE 4-5 STAR PLAYER RECRUITING, YOU BETTER GET SOME THICKER SKIN PAL.

If you are on your way to being a top notch program like you guys like to think, Why would you be worried whether or not the 99th best reciver in the country is going to sign with you. This guy is not the second coming of Calvin John son or he would have been more thought of than that. He probably is a real good downfield blocker.

Just to clarify any confusion, when I threatened to yank his scholy away he didn’t budge. It wasn’t until I told him I had ways and means of putting his 89 year old grandfather out on the streets and out of the retirement home that Stephen came back to his senses.

the truth: to quote coach Johnson, Tech only installed around 50% of Johnson’s total offensive package, leaving the rest for this spring and summer. A good portion of that remaining 50% is passing, so expect to see a lot of Hill come Sept. ‘09.

**People, look at the key quote he said: “I told his dad this morning, ‘This is a 40-year decision, not a four-year decision.’ We feel he did the right thing.”

Im persoanlly glad that he tells recruits this. MOst kids go with whats popular which may not be good for them in the long run. I had friends at Tech and UGA who played football. And the ones at UGA had the most cupcake majors. And when some of them dont make it to the NFL or they get a career ending injury, they are stuck with nothing more than that degree in a field that is irrelevant especially in this economy. My friends who went to Tech now have jobs paying 60,000+ in the first year… my friends who went to UGA who didnt go pro work at jobs that people from Georgia Perimeter can get. On top of that, peope have to realize that an NFL career doesnt last that long typically… what are you going to do for the rest of your 40+ years on earth. Its always great to have a good education to fall back on when your career is over either after college or NFL.**

Dawg fans embarrass their program with the comments they make on these message boards…you normally just reinforce the stereotype of being dumb, ignorant, and rather jealous. The Truth, Stephen Hill perhaps wanted a good college degree to go along with some winning football (45-42, remember). buzzkill, everyone needs to be able to block (even at UGa, I’ll wager) and Tech would love to throw the ball more often. And mike, if a young man breaks his word before he ever shows up, perhaps you may want to re-think his scholarship offer. Caoch Johnson is VERY careful to be clear with these young men about what the deal is, and urges them NOT to commit until they are ready and have finished the process. Then, he expects that if you tell him something, you will stick to it. Perhaps a foreign concept to UGa fans who are used to paying highest dollar for their players?

Georgia Tech is fortunate to sign Chris Crenshaw today from Jefferson County High School. Besides the fact he owns a school record for 28 1/2 sacks in his career…he is a very bright young man and will do well off the field with whatever career path he decides. I expect to see him on the field this fall for the Yellow Jackets and playing 4 quarters.

Stephen didn’t break his commitment by visiting somewhere else… That’s why the scholly wasn’t yanked.

Paul was at Navy a long time and had a buyout clause. Navy knew he would take an opportunity to return to the South if the right door opened. Tech opened and he spent time with his family trying to determine if that was the right course of action. He paid what he owed them and came to Tech.

Regardless of where someone goes to school it’s up to the individual to acheive academically. To say that Georgia is not an institution that is equipped to provide a student with a great education is biased. Georgia Tech is a fine school as well but just becuase GT specializes in high level engineering classes doesn’t belittle the departments at UGA. It comes down to what does this young man wants to make of his opportunity. GT athletes have failed academically just as all other institutions of higher learning have had academic failures and they have all had great success stories as well. Good luck to this yong man. He made the decision that was best for him and it’s a great day in his life. I wish you well, but if you drop the ball a few times when you play Georgia I certainly won’t hold it against you.

Truth..the real Truth..the whole Truth..and nothing but the Truth. As evidenced by the last UGA/Tech game Hill won’t need to catch any passes against UGA. Can any one say 400 yards rushing? Apparently unlike UGA we teach our WRs to block also, which the NFL highly appreciates.

DEAN Well said.I am a Tech Grad and fan, but I do respect the academics at UGA. Being biased, I think Tech is better but I know Georgia is a good school also. These young guys pick the school and coaches they like and so be it.i wish them all well on and off the field,of course I wish the Tech kids a little better when playing our eastern neighbors.

Hey Mike,

You douchebags destroy your own bs arguments about kids wanting to acheive academcially just because they settle with Tech with every post. Tech is an ENGINEERING SCHOOOL. How many of your “student athletes” actually major in engineering? Better question, how many football players do? Johnson has lost dozens of STUDENT ATHLETES this recruiting season to the SEC. You pathetic, arrogant, loser Tech fans make the claim that a kid is only a student athlete if they commit to Tech. Weird that Johnson would recruit kids that aren’t student athletes to begin with? Do they only become NON-student athletes if they decide to go somewhere else? You people are as ignorant as you are lonely. The trash you cowards were saying about Hill when he considered UGA shows your true character, or lack there of.

Had Hill gone to UGA he would have turned into a thug, gangbanger idiot on the Tech blogs within seconds. But since he stayed with Tech he’s back to being a STUDENT ATHLETE. Absolutely pathetic and shameless.

Thank you Dean. I’m so tired of that line of thinking about the degrees. Tech is an engineering school and UGA offers a variety of degrees. It is comparing apples to oranges when discussing the quality of education, types of jobs, etc. Tech people who pride themselves on being so much smarter than us lowly UGA grads really don’t help their argument this way. I guess my wife is just really lucky that her UGA education didn’t cost her when her company pays her $77K.

The passing game is secondary in Johnson’s triple option. I’ve watched it since I was a student at Ga. Southern during Erk Russell’s tenure. But, wide receivers get lots of opportunities, often deep strikes in his offense. Ask Monte Sharpe and Delano Little if they weren’t on the receiving end of many Tracy Ham bombs. There will be passing at Tech this season, and it’ll be fun to watch.

Hey Too Easy, you’re an idiot. Try checking your facts before making yourself look like an idiot. UGA did offer Hill last week, did an in-home visit with him, and were pushing him to go up there that weekend. Paul Johnson talked to Hill, and Hill decided not to visit. It shows that UGA did offer, and did have interest. But leave it to the typical UGA fan, once passed over by a recruit, to say “We didn’t want him anyway”.

As for those saying coaches change jobs so recruits can look around too, its different. Coaches have contracts with buyouts. That is a mutually agreed upon amount where if either party decides to terminate the agreement they have in advance settled the amount that is owed. A coach, or school for that matter, has the right to cancel the contract as long as they pay the buyout. A recruit has no contract save the verbal one, and eventually the LOI. CPJ reached a verbal contract with each recruit by saying no more visits after you commit. If the recruit cannot live with that, he does not commit. The agreement was reached, the contract “executed” verbally. Once Aycock broke it, CPJ executed his end of the bargain and withdrew the offer. Good for Johnson for enforcing the efforts to keep a kid to his word. This should help GT in the future keep others from doing the same thing.

“Tech is an engineering school and UGA offers a variety of degrees. It is comparing apples to oranges when discussing the quality of education, types of jobs, etc.”

Statistical analysis of economic accomplishment and how that correlates with educational institution does not support that statement. You’re perpetuating a myth based on the use of outliers. That’s called deception.

Really? So the ONLY way to make money is to go to a highly “academic” school like Duke or Stanford? It is impossible to go to a school of lower quality and still make a lot of money? My point was this - would someone with an structural engineering degree be taken over someone with an MBA in business administration for a CEO position with eBay? Sure, someone with an MBA from Duke or Stanford is going to get the position before someone who got theirs from Phoenix Online School. But to say you can only make a lot of money by going to a highly academic school is a myth too.

How about the myth that tech fans insist on making - that somehow going to UGA will result in a low paying job or that you aren’t smart if you have a degree from UGA. That the only Tech offers a “quality” education. You can only be “smart” if you have an engineering degree?

What is with all this money talk? Hell, I did not attend UGA or GTech and I make a pretty good living by going to a much smaller school. This is just stupid to talk about. This blog is about Hill period.

UGA fans can act like that Hill will be a waste at GTech, but they are sadly mistaken. You guys are just upset that it did not work out in your favor. If Hill had decided to go with UGA he would be praised as being a legitimate threat and a nice option at WR.

CPJ is looking for balance next year and beyond. The passing game will be a big part of it. If you have mid to deep threat receivers then you can keep the defense on their toes which will open up the run game.

Hill obviously picked Tech for a reason. I do not think he would go to Tech if he honestly thought he would only get 13 catches per season. That’s ridiculous.

As far as the discussion of which school is better, wether it is GT or UGA, is pointless. As others have pointed out both schools offer solid programs depending on what you want to major in. I work with 3 UGA grads and 3 GT grads. All of these guys are perfectly capable (make a good living) and have had solid educations.

Thank you Michael. Those are the “apples” and “oranges” I’m talking about that Tech fans always try to compare. In all his statistical analysis, Ken missed the entire point of my post. That it is completely different coursework for being a student at tech compared to uga, but that doesn’t diminish the quality of education.

UGA is a good school. They have a good football team and academics, pretty girls, nice campus and we could go on and on, but all good things must stop somewhere so here it is—- UGA has the most classless fans in the SEC and also in the lower 48 states. Boy, if you want a good laugh, or want to get really PO’d just read their blogs,or any blogs, ‘cause they dont’t seem to which is theirs and which is someone else.
