Southwest DeKalb: Six to the next level

Southwest DeKalb continued its tradition of producing college athletes, with six football players earning scholarships. Two of longtime coach Buck Godfrey’s latest crop - receiver Jacoby Mitchell and running back Michael Johnson - will play at Western Carolina.

Linebacker Brandon Brant (Elon), free safety Richard Hughes (Jackson State), linebacker Brian Thomas (Morehouse) and receiver Dion Hamilton (Dean College) will also sign letters of intent at a noon ceremony in the school media center. “We only had seven seniors that started [in 2008] and six earned scholarships,” co-defensive coordinator Damien Wimes said.”

Wimes also said more than 40 rising seniors will make the 2010 class one of the best in Panthers’ history. “We’ve already had some early offers,” Wimes said. “You can’t help but be excited about that.”
