South Carolina reveals recruiting “secrets”

Give Steve Spurrier and his staff credit for always keeping things interesting, even on signing day.

Shane Beamer, who was recently appointed as South Carolina’s recruiting coordinator by Spurrier, told The (S.C.) State newsaper about one of his secret selling points to prospects.

“You can go to a Southern Cal and win a national championship, which they have done before. You can go to a Tennessee or a Georgia or a Florida and win an SEC championship, which they’ve done before,” Beamer told The State.

“But you can come to South Carolina and do something that has never been done — that’s win an SEC championship.”

Mr. Beamer is kidding, right? That’s like telling a straight guy he can go to a gay bar and “do something he never did before”.

These young men either like Spurrier, or they don’t like Spurrier. Most don’t and there’s no in between.

That’s the secret? Telling recruits your program has never won a NC or a conference championship? Kinda like telling a girl you have a STD and then expect to get her in bed.

That same tactic has worked for So Carolina for over 100 yrs of football. Keep it up!

Secret? That’s just sad that anyone would want to go to a school that has been playing football since 1892 and has one ACC championship over 40 years ago and a 4-10 all time bowl record. Oh, did I mention that their all time record is still a losing record. Little usc really needs to be in the MAC conference, or drop down a class, or maybe just concentrate on baseball.

Way to make the something useful out of USC’s dismal record in football.

Beamer might consider some variations: “You can go to South Carolina and …”

… win the SEC East, which has never been done before.”

… win six games in the SEC, which has never been done before.”

… win at least half your SEC games in your career, which has never been done before.”

… avoid a losing SEC record during your career, which has never been done before.”

… got to a bowl game four years in a row, which has never been done before.”

… put together back-to-back 9-win seasons, which has never been done before.”

Or you can go to carolina and play for a new head coach in 2 years. Carolina really belongs in the ACC. But like some else mentioned, its worked for 100 years so why screw it up. Go Tech!!!

I think Beamer is on to something…

Mark Richt should tell recruits that if they come to Georgia they have he chance to do something that hasn’t been done before like…

…win more than two SEC championships in 26 years.” …beat Florida twice in a row.” …beat Florida more than once every five years.” …beat South Carolina when a win will put the Dawgs in the national championship game.” …have more wins in the SEC East than South Carolina the last three years.”

Yep, I think Beamer is definitely on to something here…

Say what you want, but there’s no denying that our program is gaining momentum… UGAy snuck by us last year BARELY, and we took you guys down in your house the year before…

So what does it say about UGAy that you can barely sneak by a team with such a dismal history?

Hmmmm… Might want to think about that.

Beamer says the secret to the USC recruiting class is what????
The secret this year was that Clemson changed lead horses in the middle of the stream. Add to that a stud lineman that qualified for VA. Tech last year, and opted out, decided on Clemson, and Va. Tech (understandably) nixed the deal. Shane Beamer should know this. He is pretty close to the principals involved.

The AJC always has a way of twisting/adding words for affect. If you go to the source, Beamer never said anything about it being a “secret” selling point. It is pretty impressive they were able to pull such a quality (12th rated by Rivals, ESPN) class, whether Clemson changed coaches or not, given they only went 7-6 and had dismal end to last season.

South Carolina didn’t invent this tactic. The sign in the Barber Shop window reads “Free Haircuts Tomorrow”. They never take it down.

when will you gamecocks ever get over making your season about beating the dawgs. Maybe if you worked as hard at winning all your games your record might be better. Quit running your mouths and stop making Georgia the focal point of your season and avoid some the let downs that follow after the Georgia game. Go Dawgs. ps how did it work for you guy when you did beat us at home a 6 & 6 record and no post season game

Spurrier has yet another highly ranked class at USC but somehow it never seems to make much of a difference on the field. They do play UGA very close most years and I really like most of their Fans and admire their Passion and unwaivering Support! I hope one Day thier Fans are Finally Rewarded. They deserve it more than Most other Fans.

carolina had a very good class far better than many of their SEC/ACC mates.

the ole ball coach has surprised many sec teams since he has been there, but with inferior talent.

this is the first year that he has really brought in some talented people.

it appears ole steve is in this for the long haul!

i am not a carolina fan, but he has always made it interesting when he plays our dawgs.

speaking of the dawgs, this georgia class will provide some instant help at receiver,d-back,de-line and linebacker.

dawgs will surprise in ‘09.

Kiffin and Shane Beamer…they must use some kindof jedi mind trick on these 18 year olds…Do they have any idea what they’re up against week after week. If you don’t stay humble in the SEC, you will be soon.

Let’s go gamecocks!

rain or shine, live or die, win or lose… I’m a gamecock and so what about it? just because some teenagers lose a ballgame I’m supposed to not pull for my alma mater?

good luck to your teams this year. We’ll win it someday and I’ll party like a madman. Until then, the journey is a blast. the games are fun, the stadium is packed, the tailgating is great and the coeds continue to amaze. the fact that the winning programs can get so worked up about anything we say, or that we can make the papers at all is a good sign. Go cocks!
