South Atlanta: DB Derrick Murray signs with Furman

South Atlanta defensive back Derrick Murray signed with Furman on Wednesday.

“I don’t even know a free safety in the NFL as long as him,” coach Brian Gwyn said.

Gwyn said the 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior, also had offers from Howard, Alabama A&M, Western Carolina and Tennessee Tech.

“There is some talent at South Atlanta,” Gwyn said. “It will take a couple of years to build, but we are working to get kids back in the program.”

They have only had one great player there in the last 25 years, that would be Greg Hall #t64…He was an undersized but hard nosed player. He proved to be an excellent swimmer , actually set the record on the Furman Pond for treading water. The second best player was Kevin Esval. Some say if it wasnt for that one eyebrow, he would have been one of the best kickers in Greenville( including High Schools). I hope this kid can carry on the Purple tradition like Greg,Kevin, and the most famous Prince.

I hope this kid can live up to the tradition Greg, Kevin,’the little violet’ and myself have created at this institution. I stuck my chest out at all times for this school, i still just stick it out for the heck of it.I have a big chest. i got some freckles too. Now i think about it, I should have just followed my girlfriend to UGA. Her name was Jenny and damn i miss her. She sure looked better than ‘the little violet”

What happened to the ” little violet” ? That dude was small, hell, everything was small compared to my ego. Can someone confirm “little violets” whereabouts. I was told he was the midget on the Jackass movie

I still keep up with a lot players. Hall was a great player. Esval always high and right on his kicks, much like his right eyebrow. Coppenger, should have benn a civilian at UGA. He did have a huge chest. Glover, i dont remember him The Little Violet, Merkle, lost track of him. I did see his name in the credits of the Wonka remake..Made me damn proud he was a Purple OOMPA LOOMPA…Word is he has an FTD franchise…He gives the University 10% discounts on Homecoming corsages…www.littleviolet.com if any are interested.
