Hillside High School (N.C.) running back Desmond Scott stayed close to home and signed with Duke, headlining a 27-player class for the Blue Devils.
Scott seems to be a perfect fit for the Blue Devils, who were 103rd in the nation in rushing in 2008, gaining just 106 yards per game. Scott also has speed (4.4 40-yard dash), something coach David Cutcliffe and his staff emphasized during the recruiting period.
“[Scott is] a very explosive player and he’s a good cross-section of what the class is like; this class is very much highlighted by speed,” Duke coach David Cutcliffe told the AJC. “General, overall team speed was probably the biggest issue that we’ve had. Scott is a good cross-section of what the class is like.”
Scott’s high school teammate, athlete Corey Gattis, also signed, along with speedy receivers Tyree Watkins (Camden, N.J.) and Conner Vernon (Miami). Overall, Rivals.com gave 15 Duke prospects three stars or better.
“We’re really upgrading our talent level across the board,” Cutcliffe said. “And I think these guys truly have a chance to impact the program.”
