McDaniel heads Florida State class

Even with in-state rival Florida winning its second national championship in three years, it didn’t deter Florida State from making a splash on National Signing Day. The Seminoles landed one of the nation’s top prospects in Madison County (Fla.) High School defensive tackle Jacobbi McDaniel, a 6-foot, 267-pounder who is expected to join a class of at least 17 today.

“Jacobbi is the best player that I have ever coached and I have been doing this for over 25 years,” Madison County coach Frankie Carroll said in an e-mail. “Not only is he big and strong, but he has the footwork of a running back. [He] will go far in football as well as life.”

Joining McDaniel in Tallahassee is his Madison County teammate, Chris Thompson, a 5-8, 175-pound running back with great speed. With the graduation of Antone Smith (792 yards, 15 TD as a Florida State senior), Thompson could contribute right away.

“Chris has worked himself into a great football player,” Carroll said. “[He’s] very explosive, can cut on a dime and works hard at everything that he does.”

McDaniel had 15 tackles for loss and eight sacks as a senior. Thompson ran for 1,330 yards and 14 touchdowns.
