Georgia State coach Bill Curry says he was surprised by the reception he got from schools around the state during the recruiting process.
“That’s been a pleasant surprise,” Curry told 680 the Fan in an interview this morning. “I thought it would take us two to three years to get established to have high school coaches and counselors welcome us. But they’ve been great from day one.”
Building a team in a talent rich state like Georgia can only help get the program off the ground, but Curry says he’s getting also getting interest from transfers.
“Most transfers are transferring for a reason, you have to be careful of that,” he said. “We will welcome transfers who do it the right way.”
Georgia State will compete in Division I-AA football starting in 2010. They’ll join in with the Colonial Athletic Association in 2012.
“In time, the potential is unbelievable,” he said. “Football will be a very big success at Georgia State sooner than later.”

Played for Bobby Dodd, Vince Lombardi, and had Bart Starr and Johhny U under his CENTER. This man grows MEN and Teaches RESPECT and CLASS. You could do a great deal worse to send your child to play ball for a coach. Bill is a good man.

I applaud Coach Curry’s efforts, and I wish him luck. Competing for football talent in this state is going to be difficult with two storied 1A schools already in place and several other options available, including Georgia Southern, Valdosta State, West Georgia, etc. I think GSU’s location and curriculum will lure some athletes, and playing in the CAA might give the program a little more exposure nationwide, but it’s going to be a struggle. Since I’m a GSU alum, I’ll do what I can to support the program and I look forward to opening day 2010.
