Georgia State feeling the signing day excitement

The clock on the wall at the Georgia State University football program’s office is ticking down, with 575 days and just less than six hours until kickoff.

It is a seven-block walk from the Sports Arena, which houses most of the school’s athletic offices, to the football program’s satellite office.

Inside those offices the place is buzzing.

Faxes filtered in through the morning, with employees stepping into the hallway to shout out names of signees down the hallway toward coach Bill Curry’s office. “This is like being an expectant father,” Curry said with a big grin.

As he walked into the hallway, a camerawoman from ESPN.com filmed his every move - his talks with other coaches, his phone calls to signees’ parents, his reactions to letters coming off the faxes.

He’s constantly on his Blackberry, getting e-mails and phone calls, with people filing in and out of his office giving him updates on athletes who’ve yet to sign.

“Great,” he said, as news that Bo Schlechter, the third quarterback of the day to sign with the team, had faxed in a letter. The cover page of his fax said “Go Panthers!” which prompted a “we should frame this,” from one of the office staff members. So far, the new team has 24 signed.
