Duke expects to add 27 players

Things appear to be looking up in Durham these days. In one of the most anticipated National Signing Day events in the program’s history, Duke is expected to sign as many as 27 players today. Duke needs major improvement with its run offense and run defense, and today’s two big signings should help polish those areas.

Hillside High School (Durham, N.C.) running back Desmond Scott is expected to be the prize of the class. The 5-9, 185-pounder rushed for 1,890 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior and should have an opportunity to play right away for an offense that could only muster 106 rushing yards per game (103rd in the nation) and scored just four touchdowns rushing.

The Blue Devils run defense wasn’t much better (74th, 151 YPG), but 6-1, 303-pound Northside, Columbus defensive tackle John Drew is expected to help on that side of the ball. Drew was originally committed to Georgia Tech and also had offers from Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Duke has recruits signing from eight different states: nine homegrown players and a player each from New Jersey, Maryland, California and Virginia.
