Clemson’s class looks toward Alabama

Clemson already has one Alabama high school standout locked up — Gadsen City athlete Darrell Smith. Now, the Tigers will wait to see if his teammate will join him.

Wide receiver Kendall Kelly, a 6-3, 220-pounder, will decide today between Clemson, LSU, Tennessee and Alabama. Gadsen City coach Joe Billingsley said he didn’t know which way Kelly was leaning, but had plenty of good things to say about Smith, who reportedly had been considered a preferred walk-on before being offered a scholarship after a visit last weekend.

“He’s been going up there the last two years to their camp, and they pretty much recruited along the way the whole time,” said Billingsley. “Darrell was on everybody’s list as a tight end, and he played some fullback, some tackle and some tight end. It was my understanding [Clemson will be] signing him as an athlete because he fits a lot of bills.”

The 6-3, 235-pound Smith also had received offers from UAB, Arkansas State, Troy and Central Florida.

“I feel like they [Clemson] have a real sleeper,” added Billingsley.
