Greg Reid chooses Florida State over UGA, Alabama
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Greg Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, kept everyone guessing until the very last minute on Tuesday night. Even himself, he admitted to a friend.
Reid had hats from UGA, Alabama and Florida State lined up in front of him at an Valdosta steakhouse on Tuesday night. The defensive back from Lowndes took away Alabama, and ended up putting on FSU.
While Georgia lost Reid, it may gain Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is committed to Georgia Tech.
“Nobody knew what he was going to do,” said Valdosta linebacker Mike Gilliard, who is one of Reid’s best friends and is committed to UGA. “He even told me, along with the rest of the crowd … that he didn’t even know what he was going to do, until about 10 minutes before he [announced].”
Gillaird said there was a hush over the crowd when Reid started touching hats.
“Everybody got quiet, they were surprised,” Gillaird said. “No, they weren’t surprised he didn’t pick Georgia … they were surprised he didn’t pick Alabama, because that was the main school he was talking to everybody about on Monday.”
Reid had said there were three things he liked more about FSU than the other schools: 1) Early playing time, with the chance to start as a freshman; 2) Closest to home for family and friends to watch him play, with Tallahassee only 85 miles away, while Athens at 240 and Tuscaloosa, Ala., at 380; 3) Playing alongside his high school teammate, Gerald Demps, who is also committed to FSU.
“I talked to [other Florida State recruits] and I want to play with them,” Reid told WarChant.com. “I really want to win man. I know a lot of guys want to win. We came real close at the Under Armor All-American game.”

Greg Reid will deeply regret his decision when he gets beat 4 times by the Gators!!! If he went to Alabama he probably only would have gotten beaten by them twice or so. Oh well, good luck at Florida State Reid!

Good luck at FSU Greg. Tough to lose out on a big-time Georgia prospect but the distance to from home to FSU might have had a big effect.
Hopefully the Dawg’s luck changes tomorrow with the other targets.

Of course this is the same coaching staff that gave CWM a bonus for all his fine work last year.

We’ll i love and admire Bobby Bowden…..but im sad to see him change his mind yet again like your air filter in your house. Lets hope he’s got alot of faith in his decision. Im just concerned that our kids today have no idea of what it is like to make a “promise and commitment” then change, back off, or break it with such ease.
Can i get an AMEN?

Good for greg. He’s going JC anyway. This kid has lied to everybody around. He was a thug in high school and will be a thug in college. I said from day one I hope he didn’t come to Athens. Smith is by far the better player and student-athlete. We’ll see you in 2 years when you get out of JC reid. Or will it be jail?

As a dawg fan I am disappointed, however I hope this kid succeeds. It’s ashame the way some people on this blog bash these kids. I hope he has a great career. Hopefully9 we will do better tomorrow. From what I am hearing it dosent look good though. Marlon Brown is Tenn and Orsen is leaning toward FSU as well. That leaves the Starling kid who I hear is leaning towards FSU as well. Massie is Alabama alol the way. As I have always said, Coach the recruits you got the last two years. We have players on our roster who was highly recruited, it’s time for them to step up!

Reid will never regret a decision more than the one he made tonight. He just gave a chance to play in the best conference in all of college football to play in one of the worst conferences. To also play for a team who has gotten rocked other ACC mediocre teams. He could have been great for either Bama or UGA, especially UGA. Him and Brandon Smith could have been something special. Have fun playing for a average team, in an average conference, for an over the hill coach.

You people using this an excuse to tear down FSU are pathetic. FSU will be back.
How little UGA and UF fans remember. UGA was mediocre before Mark Richt left FSU to coach the Dawgs, and UF was mediocre until the 1990s (never won an SEC championship or National Championship until that time), stunk under Zook, and has even been 9-4 even under Coach Meyer, who apparently walks on water.
Like it or not FSU has tradition and a VERY young team, Jimbo Fisher is solid, and Bobby Bowden will retire soon.
Had Reid committed to either UGA or UF much of this vitriol would be absent. Can you say “sour grapes?!”

Good luck Mr. Reid. You chose a great program and a great college. Thank God you passed up the thug machine in Athens. You would have been one of the many Georgia football players in the Clarke County jail if you had chosen UGA. You would also keep loosing 4 or 5 games a year along with the yearly lose to UF. The program in Athens will always be a step behind the other programs in the south. The are a lower class program and play like they are 5 years old. Good luck to you and your family Mr. Reid!!!

UGA, I could see being his home state team, an SEC school playing against the best talent in the nation. FSU means he is taking the course of least resistance academically and athletically. Very little discipline in Taliban city and the NCAA is about to drop an atomic bomb on their heads. Greg “crapped in his mess kit”. You could tell by comments he made to friends that he is a mixed up kid. FSU makes zero sense.

From the Orange & Blue Hue about FSU:
NCAA Sanctions Loom Ever Closer
No matter what, FSU’s academic scandal — in which 61 student-athletes were found to have cheated on a music course — will result in scholarship reductions. That’s because FSU self-imposed the reduction prior to the NCAA’s ruling:
FSU deducted scholarships in 10 sports, including five in football over two years with two being taken away for the 2008-09 academic year and three during the 2009-2010 academic year.Of course, FSU dearly hopes that the NCAA will accept their self-flagellation, holding back on any further punishment. In my view, due to the flagrant nature of what occurred, I find this to be somewhat optimistic. After all, if multiple university employees working together to help student-athletes cheat the system isn’t a clear indication of ‘lack of institutional control’, then what is? The feather in FSU’s cap in this case is Bowden and his extensive network of cronies and cohorts.
Either way, FSU waits nervously for more bad news…
(Not to mention the annual contract extension that Bowden wrests out of his employer, making Jimbo’s payout loom. What a legacy this guy is leaving!)

I’m a lifelong Gator, and even I agree that he made a horrible mistake. Bama or UGA would have been much better choices than F$U, especially considering that the NCAA hammer is going to come down on them soon. Either way, I’m sure Greg will turn out to be a good player, but if he wanted to win, Bama or UGA would have been smarter.
I guess he’s ok with going 0-4 against the Gators, although that probably would have happened if he went to Athens too.

I chuckle at the Tech bloggers on here and on other blogs, making fun of the Dawgs by posting the score and other snide remarks. My remark to them would not be rude, it would just be to ask them how many recruits will they end up with tomorrow versus what they have had. Seems they are bailing, getting offers pulled, whatever, every day. Shame, but a dose of reality!

I am an optimistic dawg fan! Ok, we missed out on Reid but what about this other corner back from Virginia we signed, his last name is Love. He was highly recruited. He runs a 4.4 and the coaches love him. Florida came after him late and he turned them down. He will be fine. Prince Miller will get better hopefully and the schemes will allow these guys to be aggressive. We will be fine Dawg fans.

I think his decision was for the best. A CB needs to have a swagger and a lot of confidence. This decision reeks of a lack of confidence.
A 5’8” DB may be OK in the average at best ACC but Greg would get taken to the cleaners against SEC receivers. Unless he carries a step stool under his arm there’s no way he covers A J Green or Julio Jones the start receiver at either SEC school he was considering.

I think his decision was for the best. A CB needs to have a swagger and a lot of confidence. This decision reeks of a lack of confidence.
A 5’7” DB may be OK in the average at best ACC but Greg would get taken to the cleaners against SEC receivers. Unless he carries a step stool under his arm there’s no way he covers A J Green or Julio Jones the star receiver at either SEC school he was considering.

Good luck Greg, but when was the last game that Fla State played that was revelant. FSU hasn’t played a game that counted for anything in years. And they aren’t exactly headed in any direction right now.
UGA missed one.

I’ve seen Greg Reid play and I’ve seen Jamea(?) Thomas from Fitzgerald play and the main difference is that Thomas is a better football player; and when it comes down to it that is pretty much what counts when your on the field. Me and a lot of other Dawg fans are mystified at the lack of attention UGA gave Thomas.

Hate to loose a UGA potential recruit (he had academic issues) but FSU and Miami have to start taking some of State of Florida talent.
Gators have been lucking out with the Miami and FSU downfall.
And, I HAVE to say it is LOVELY seeing the beginng of, whatever the gator’s coaches name, recruiting fallout. Looking forward to add’l fallout.

TheDawg- I chuckle at the UGA bloggers on here and on other blogs, making fun of the Jackets by posting the score and other snide remarks. My remarks to them would not be rude, it would just be to ask them how many recruits will they end up with tomorrow versus what they have had. Seem they are bailing, getting offers pulled, whatever, shame, but a dose of reality! Reality Well Mr. Dawg, I hope UGA gets the very best players they can. I believe UGA has one of the best Coaches around and I wish him and the Dawgs the very best. When UGA and GT are not playing each other I’m pulling for both the Dawgs and GT. I’m a GT fan, love Coach Johnson and hope they get the best players around. There’s no reason you can’t pull for both….get a life, live and love a little, its better than hate. God Best the USA!

i havent read this whole convo. im not sure if yall are aware that greg committed to alabama last night. he called kirby smart and told him he was coming to bama. today, his mother and coach pretty much forced him out of his commitment. greg called my friend today around 3 oclock and was very p** off and upset because his mother did not support his decision. after the interview he says it was a family decision. if greg had his own way he would be in tuscaloosa in june. its almost sad how something like this can hold him down. he is aware of the mistake he is making and is thinking very hard about it right now.

Hate to say i told you so, but you pahetic uga fans get accustomed to losing the top players in state and out of state. Billy Graham is going down with his pahetic best man and loser d.c. martinez. Neither one of these clowns can recruit, nor can either one of them coach in big time games. Richt is done at UGA, and he will go down in flames with his best man martinez, and his loser o.c. in training BOOBOO. No recruit wants to play for Billy Graham or Martinez and BOOBOO. Told all of you loser UGA fans that Richt and his wonderful staff would close out this class with an 0for8 ratio. I know all of you losers will say, can’t get them all, and this is still a top 10 class. Well check again, this is not a top 10 class, not even a top 15 class, and it doesn’t matter, because these clowns can’t coach the recruits up once they get on campus anyway. How does it feel to sit there and listen to Billy Graham preach to these kids, and they laugh at him, and sign with an arch rival. If you don’t see the writing on the wall, then you have bought into this Richt b.s. more than most people. UGA will lose 4 or 5 games next year, and that will be a trend for many years to come. Yet they fire Donnan and replace him with this pathetic coach and his best man, and his friends. Face reality, UGA is now 3rd or 4th in the east, and they will remain there until billy and his friends are gone. Good luck on signing day when UGA gets nobody, and all of it’s rivals load up on talent. Even Auburn of all schools will close with more talent. Don’t even mention FL, Al, LSU,S.C,and Tenn. UGA is done, good luck in 2010, this class is a top 20 if lucky. Sixth best class in SEC, sixth best program in SEC in 2009 and beyond!!!

This was a good decision on his part. True he is Georgia born and bred, but it’s a good decision nonetheless. Why? Because he’s going to FSU where his family will be able to travel (it’s only a good hour away from Valdosta, if that) and be able to see him play on a regular basis. Athens is how far from Valdosta?
People who are bashing this young man for making a decision on where he plays college football need to let it go. He could have been a great help to the Georgia defensive backfield but let the young man go where he wants to go. You may not agree with his decision but that doesn’t give you the right to bash him because he chose one school over another. Who cares if Florida State has “criminals” or whatever? What matters is that he chose an institution where HE believes he’ll be able to get a good education and play some college football, too. Why would you denegrate his decision? Because he didn’t pick YOUR school to play for? Real stand-up, classy people.

I come in peace. I’m a 1969 Florida grad. I just wanted to tell you the ONLY reason he did not come to Georgia was because of academic standards. Go to any library in North America and you can find numerous college guides—the best one is probably U.S. News and World Report’s Rankings of Colleges and Universities—they will ALL reflect the closeness of Florida and Georgia as academic entities and the joke that is FSU. FSU has LOWER entering SAT scores, their freshmen have LOWER class ranks while the level of acceptance is HIGHER. My Georgia friends include my dermatologist, cardiologist, Veternarian and a CPA. My FSU acquiantances are very nice people, but if you need a high degree of specialization in ANYTHING—You Are Blanked!! When Burt Reynolds and a coach exhibing signs of cognitive difficulties are your most famous alums—You are AGAIN Blanked!!

All you people on here calling Greg Reid a liar because he changed his mind about the school that he’s going to. This is a decision that’s going to affect the next four years of his life, therefore, he has the right to change his mind. Stop calling him a thug. You don’t know anything about him. To some of you racist pigs, all young black athletes are thugs. What would that make Michael Phelps? How many of you that are talking about his grades have actually been in Lowndes High’s registra’s office. My guess is none. Stop hating. I’m disappointed that he didn’t stay in the SEC, but I know he’ll do well whereever he goes. He has a supportive family and a huge fan base that didn’t just jump on the bandwagon when he made the headlines. Some of us have known how truly special he was before the AJC, ESPN, and all the other Johnny Come Latelys started covering his abilities. If you think he’s talented now, you should have seen him when he played Little League at the Boys and Girls Club. Good luck, Greg, and God bless you as you take your athletic and academic career to the next level.

Jacketbacker:
First, as the godparent of a special needs child, I take offense at the “retards” moniker. As long as you’re flinging insults about, why not use some racial or ethnic epithets? Or are your tender sensibilities too delicate to challenge someone with that sort of language? Or maybe you’re just afraid to pick on someone who can fight back?
Try using the word “retard” around the mother of a Downs’ syndrome child. She’d bash your skull in.
Second, if the reference is intended to insult the intelligence of Georgia fans, I would think that a school that produced the likes of Reggie Ball and Justin Houston would have a hard time challenging the intelligence of anyone. Didn’t Tech have an eligibility schedule a decade or so ago because someone in the Tech compliance office “didn’t understand the rules?”
Please.
The intelligence arguments are tiresome and inane. They are also not supported by fact; the entering freshman classes of U.Ga. and Georgia Tech are virtually identical academically. Look it up.
Third, it would be helpful if each of you Tech fans would simply brand the “45-42” score on your foreheads so that you can remind yourselves of that single shining moment of glory for decades to come. Perhaps then you would feel less compelled to write it at the end of every piece of correspondence. Moreover, it will not fade if emblazoned on your skull—fitting, as it will be the last memorable score of that sort that Tech will have for a long time, similar to the last score of this sort nearly a decade ago (The secret decoder rings will come in handy in this regard, as well).
Mark my words: The drought returneth, my insectoid friend. It returneth soon. And it will be a blight the likes of which you have not seen since the days of Reggie “I can’t remember what down it is” Ball. You should gloat while you can, for the day of reckoning is a scant ten months away. And there will be hell to pay.
Jeff Owens guarantees it. It’s why he came back.

And to all my fellow UGA fans on this blog taking cheap shots at this kid, you guys need to get a life and stop acting like all of those RETARDED GAY-TORS fans!!!! SHOW SOME CLASS !!!!!!

I don’t get the fact that a lot of UGA fans are saying he is a thug. FSU might not be what it once was as far as a powerhouse goes but I think you all led the nation in player arrest last year. At least Bobby suspends and then kicks kids off the team instead of keeping them around. Seems like these days UGA would let OJ play for them if he still had eligibility and you all thought he could put you over the top.

This brings to mind the words to an old Garth Brooks song: “Thank you God for unanswered prayers.” I don’t think we’ll miss a kid like this on our team. This past month he’s made very clear that he wants all the attention in the world. If that’s the type of person he is then he’ll definitely fit in better at Florida State. I’m a UGA fan but have to admit that he can’t be too smart if he uncommitted from Florida to choose Florida State,,,, especially if his reason for choosing the school is because he really wants to win.

You are correct…Dawg fans are the worst. They learn their poor behavior from their fake Christian leader, Mark Richt.

this is classic, the same bullpups who kissed this kids butt last week after the ajc blog where he took Florida off his list are now saying he will fail at FSU and bashing him for his grades, see you after JC or jail, blah, blah. Get over it! He didn’t spurn you, he did what he felt was best for him.

To the idiot who said FSU was the best Middle school education around:
Did UGA have a Rhodes Scholar on its football team. Nope didn’t think so.
Check Myron Rolle who will be studying in Oxford. And…

Jan Kemp strikes again posthumously?
That was the rumor Dawg fans were hearing well before the announcement., that he couldn’t get admitted to UGA so he was going FSU. It may be BS, but that was the story at least 2 days before even Greg claims he decided.
Regardless, best of luck to him.
And to be clear, the above was not a knock against anyone or any school. FSU is not cheating to get him in (so far as anyone knows) and Greg seems to have turned his academics around since getting off to a rough start in high school. It’s just a fact that because of Jan Kemp we are still playing by a slightly different set of rules than many of our competitors.

* YP 2BT and Oscar*,
Stop generalizing about DAWG fans. There are as many of us wishing the young man good luck as there are bashing him. There are good and bad bloggers fans from all schools. Don’t detract from the discussion. Man/Woman up and stay above the fray.

Who goes to FSU over a powerhouse like UGA? The depth chart was wide open at georgia with Asher Allen leaving. He will regret this choice.

Congratulations to Greg Reid! I think he made a good choice of schools for him and his family. I’m a fan of GA & FSU. Greg ignore all the negative things people have to say and continue to do your best. Keep your eye on the big prizes, college degree & NFL, whether it’s the Juco rte or starting as a Fresh. and playing 4 yrs. or whatever path GOD has for you!!!

Good luck Reid. Just join the LOST BOYS we (Georgia) had been. Berry, the big OL FSU got the same year with Little, the weir DE guy (live on island off GA coast), and another DE FU got him the year before. I can hardly remember them now. Not on TV or any football world. Again, good luck and please stick with your decision. Close to your mommy, and offered starting spot because the program is on the rise??? I don’t get it really. Oh! and a chance to play in the powerful ACC. May be on your bye week you can come and watch some SEC football, we play football here

To all of you thUGly fans, no big loss and probably a blessing. You wouldn’t have seen him for at least 2 years until he completed a semester at a JUCO (or maybe Alto) and then not for long. Good athlete, tho. But, as you’ve proven many times you’re quite capable of getting top athletes who are there for the long haul.

Myron Rolle play at Oxford? Never heard the new. I don’t know UK is trying to adop a football team (the kind that play with both hands and feet). Just in case you confused with the Rhode Schlolarship, UGA is only U that have two right now.

This thug can’t add the numbers on his jersey….much less speak a coherent sentence. There is no way he scored high enough on the SAT for acceptance to any school. These coaches and fans want to win at ALL COSTS.

Reid a student athlete? Not! Dumber than a sack of hammers is he. FSU gets them all.
The kid is listed at 5’9” but i suspect he goes 5’7” and in the SEC he would be second string.
It would take him two years in a juco to mature academically anyway, so who cares???

Man from all this Trash Talking from Dawg fans you would think that the only way he would play for a BCS championship would be to go to Athens..Right…. when was the last time that has happened? Chick-fil-a bowl…funny…Guess he will miss the newly named Southern Idaho spud bowl (I Hear the Dawgs are a lock). This Isn’t the first time a kid has changed his mind, and surley wont be the last! Welcome Greg Reid…look forward to seeing you the next for years.

THIS A DAWG SITE with a lot of lonely fans from other schools coming here. I have looked. Nothing like this for BAMA, LSU, FLA. AUBURN ETC. We would go to their home town paper to vent and hate, but it does not exist !

While my uga friends and I rib each other a bit, the ones on this blog are as big a thugs as they accuse these kids of being when they choose a rival school.
How dare you uga fans accuse anyone elses kids of being thugs!

Hi greg, your chocie was one you made. I HAVE read most of the comments up to now. Nobody will belive that when a player from a 5-A REGION win that award the outcome is big time. I have enjoyed the signing blog, the time learning who you are, and surely the chance to know that a player from the band got that much time. You are going to the D1 college in our region. you will still be in the region. your answer is your family; I guess some of the fans in the region has become family members. If you do read all these comments—some of us are glad you stayed in the region. STAY SAFE AND DO-NOT FORGET 1-AA(12)
