Georgia State loses one of its top football commitments

Douglass defensive back Caleb Lester had been solidly committed to being a part of Georgia State’s first ever recruiting class for two months. But a weekend trip to Alabama-Birmingham nixed all of that.

Douglass Ken Barrow said Lester has switched allegiances and will sign with UAB on National Signing Day, Wednesday. Lester went on an official visit last weekend to UAB to see what the Blazers had to offer.

“He told me [Monday] that he was switching to UAB,” Barrow said.

He and Jonathan Davis will make a good pair, flunking out after their first year.

It’s got to be tough to recruit kids when they aren’t going to hit the game field for another year. Basically like existing programs telling all of their recruits that they absolutely will redshirt. I am interested to see what kind of product they put on the field.

Don’t know why anyone would want to go to school in the Alabama anyway. redneck riveria.

In the South there are few oasis’ of culture and non-wacko evangelical religion. Atlanta is one of those.

Georgia State is a great school in the greatest city in the South.

Your loss Mr. Lester.. Hop ye do w’lllll ovair n Bama.

It’s all part of the process. I mean can you blame his for switching to UAB? Like someone already said earlier its really hard to commit to a program that will not play for another year. That can seem like eternity for many players who have the potential of playing their first year on campus. I am still really impressed at the recruit that Curry has managed to reel in thus far. If this first recruiting class for GSU is an indication of what is happen in the coming years then I would say that GSU football is on the right path.

Why wouldn’t he choose UAB? They’re a I-A school. They’re in Conference USA with a chance (remote though it is) to play in a BCS bowl. If you look at UAB’s future schedules, over the next four years he’ll have the opportunity to play at Texas A&M, at Tennessee, at Florida, and at Ohio State. UAB also has home and home deals with both Ole Miss and Miss State over those four years. Think of the exposure that gives him and the competition afforded by those out of conference games. I don’t think any I-AA team can compete with that, certainly not one that’s just starting up.

I know this is Georgia state’s first year of recruiting football, so I will give them a pass, but welcome to FCS football. We will almost always lose recruits to FBS teams. BTW, the real GSU is in the Boro !

Hey Rick, you can keep GA State. It’s in a sketchy and shady part of that wonderful ‘oasis’ of ‘high culture’ and is I-AA football. What’s your problem with Alabama? If you’d leave your wonderful paradise in Atlanta you’d realize Georgia is just as Southern as the rest of the South. And guess what? There’s nothing wrong with that.

Rick B, have you ever been to Birmingham? It’s basically Atlanta in 1/10 scale.

Rick B, have you ever spent time in Birmingham? It’s basically Atlanta in 1/10 scale. UAB is an oasis inside a bigger oasis from your supposed “redneck riviera”.
