Georgia Tech rescinds scholarship offer to Florida QB after Auburn trip

Quarterback Dontae Aycock of Tampa, Fla., who had given a “secret commitment” to Georgia Tech three weeks ago, had his scholarship offer taken away by the Jackets.

Aycock was warned by Georgia Tech of the consequences if he took an official visit to Auburn last weekend, according to his coach.

“Auburn called him on Thursday and offered him on Friday,” Chamberlain coach Brian Turner said. “He was told [by Georgia Tech coaches] that if he took the trip [to Auburn over the weekend] the scholarship would be pulled.

“He went on the trip and, I guess, he’s going in a different direction now.”

Turner said he and his staff advised Aycock to keep his word to Tech.

“We’re very disappointed. We don’t like our kids to do that. We want our kids to honor their commitments. [Tech] gave him every opportunity to not do it.”

Aycock’s decision to visit Auburn (where he is now committed), who is recruiting him as a running back, may have been influenced by his brother Dwight Smith, a safety for the Detroit Lions.

“I think what it came down to is he wants to play in the NFL, and people are influencing him,” Turner said. “They’re telling him if he plays running back, he has a better chance of making it to the NFL.

“We thought he’d be the perfect quarterback in Georgia Tech’s system. We thought Georgia Tech was a great fit for him.

“We think he’s making a mistake, but we’ll support him. With his talent, he would have been a great quarterback there. But we love the kid, and we’ll support him.”

Nothing new with colleges and Henry County WR Jamal Patterson

Despite rampant speculation that other schools may get involved at the last minute with Henry County wide receiver Jamal Patterson, his coach is extremely confident that he will sign with Stanford on Wednesday.

“He is going to Stanford, I swear,” said Henry County’s Mike Rozier, who also added that no schools had contacted him about Patterson on Monday.

Patterson, who was one of the nation’s most heavily recruited players with nearly 50 scholarships offers, had agreed to take an official visit to Clemson and was planning to tour Central Florida. However, he ended up canceling both recruiting trips.

Patterson made the surprising decision to pick Stanford in August over Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, among others. One of the few schools never to offer was UGA.

Perry OL Johnnie Farms sticking with North Carolina over Auburn

Perry offensive lineman Johnnie Farms had said he was going to wait until Wednesday to pick between North Carolina and Auburn.

On Monday, Farms changed his mind, saying that he was sticking by his commitment to North Carolina. He made an official visit to Auburn this past weekend.

“Auburn is not where I want to go,” he said.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior said he will sign with UNC on Wednesday.

Northside LB Eric Fields not likely to sign with Clemson, says report

Northside-Warner Robins linebacker Eric Fields is not likely to sign with Clemson on Wednesday because of his academic situation, reported GoUpstate.com.

Fields, an AJC Super 11 selection, had told the website that he couldn’t take an official visit to Clemson because he has yet to take the SAT or ACT. Fields told GoUpstate that will take the ACT for the first time on Feb. 6.

When contacted by the AJC, Northside coach Conrad Nix said that he “could not comment” on a specific student’s academic records.

However, Nix said “We care about our kids as the total person. We’re concerned about their academics, their spiritual life, their well-being … the whole person. And we try our best to provide the necessary things to make them successful in life.”

Regarding the recruiting of Northside players, Nix said “We carry our kids to colleges and camps so they can hear the college coaches talk about … all the things … they need to do to be able to play at the next level.”
