QB Dontae Aycock is “secret” commitment to Georgia Tech, says report

Florida quarterback Dontae Aycock, Georgia Tech’s final target for its 2009 recruiting class, has already committed to the Jackets, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Chamberlain assistant Brian Turner told the Tribune that Aycock gave a “secret” commitment to Georgia Tech three weeks ago. However, he decided to take an official visit to Auburn this weekend after being offered on Thursday, according to the Tribune.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Aycock won the 2008 Guy Toph Award , which is given to Hillsborough County’s best senior football player, beating out other standouts such as Plant High quarterback Aaron Murray (signed with UGA) and tight end Orson Charles (undecided).

Aycock passed for 1,491 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 1,406 yards with 28 touchdowns this past season. The Tribune said Aycock will announce between Tech and Auburn on Wednesday.

Another high character student-athlete chooses GaTech…and he beat out “Lil Spooner” Murray for the award. An award that is voted on locally, so I guess that means that the voters actually know the kids pretty well. What are the student-athletes judged on to win this award? Read below:

Winners of the Guy Toph Award, which goes annually to Hillsborough County’s top senior football player based on a series of criteria that includes academics and good citizenship

so obvioulsy u would not have made it based on the good citizenship qualification.

By GT4Life

So obviously you are a UGA fan since nothing in my post would indicate anything about my “citizenship” - 1: the status of being a citizen2 a: membership in a community b: the quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community)

You’re a bright one…NOT.

The rushing yardage for this guy stands out like a sore thumb…seems tailor made for Paul Johnson philosopy.. I think the ultra concentration on offense for the jackets is not their main concern though.. Just like the Dawgs, they need to emphasize defense — I’d rather have 14 - 10 or 10 - 7 games instead of 53 - 7 or 45 - 42..I like the defense..and of course I like the Dawgs starting another streak against the Jackets.

I wasn’t one of the voters…so you’re right, I don’t know either kid. But the voters are all local and I’m sure they know both kids very well. And who won the award? You really aren’t that bright, are you? I’m sure your like is fabulous, seeing how ignorance is bliss.

It should have been easy for this kid to beat out Aaron Murray when my boy had a broken ankle AND tibia and missed about 8 weeks. Now, GT4life, as a Tech fan I could see why you felt like this was cause for celebration. Living right up to those UGA/Tech standards of competition, when you finally win something, even though it was you gift, you have no idea how to act about it. GO DAWGS!!!!

TopDawg (I guess that would make clinchpanther BottomDawg),

You, like every other dawg, tend to think every award is based on athletics alone. If you would, go wake your mom and ask her to read the article referenced by the link in my previous post. The other criteria for the award were academics and good citizenship (you know, things that make you a well-rounded student-athlete). I guess since your boy Murray had a broken bone, he couldn’t stay on top of his school work or be a positive member of his community. Next time you want to put your muzzle in someone else’s convo, how about getting mama to read it to you 1st…if she can read.

GT4life, those were some good jokes about my Mom. Very classy and worthy of a weak a$$ bumble bee, but we’ll get off Moms cuz I just got off….. Oh, well I’m sure with all your experience with mama jokes, (Mostly in reference to your own Moms excessive facial hair I’m sure), you know how that one goes. Back to the topic at hand, Aaron Murray is already enrolled at UGA. Doesn’t really sound like his academics are in quesiton since he somehow managed to start college early, and through the “magic” of tv I’m aware that he already has done some philanthropic work in the Athens community working with children that suffer from Downs Syndrome.(Insert your pathetic UGA joke here when this is really about a kid doing something positive in the community) Maybe he didn’t win that award when he was in HIGH SCHOOL, but I think that part is over now. I’m more concerned with how he performs as a Dawg, so let your boy keep his fake award and continiue to get his grades fixed so he can go be failure at football at tech, at which point I’m sure you’ll blame the football failure on that fact that you guys are an institution that puts “Extra emphasis on academics”. BTW, as a proud upstanding UGA fan we like to call the a ready made excuse. Again I say, GO DAWGS!!!!!

Topdawg,

Just stepping foot in the hick town of Athens qualifies you as working with the mentally-impaired (anyone with downs syndrome, please accept my apologies for juxtaposing you and the rabble called “dawgs”). What one does in high school is usually a good indicator as to what they will do in college. Starting early at UGA is like head-start for college students…you might as well get all those baskets woven before the season starts.

No but really, I hope Murray is a player…just so he’ll be ready in time for the 2009 Tech/Uga game (that is after your fellow dawgs throw J. Cox under the bus along the way. THWG!!!!

Success is always short lived at Tech and when the next total beatdown comes at the hands of UGA it is fans like GT4Life that make them so sweet. One win in 8 years and 13 in the last 37 isn’t really something to get so cocky about. In fact, when you get a ring for it, it is quite pitiful and something that shows GT’s true place in the football pecking order.

Sam, what do you know about the ring? For all you stupid fans out there who gives so much time talking about the ring, get a life, check out the real reason, had nothing to do with the win, every year he honors his seniors with a ring whether they beat the dawg’s or not thats his way of showing support for the efforts they put into playing for him, that the score was put on there was an accomplishments to being the first class to win in 7 years, which is not different to when Sapp or what ever his name was beat Tech to stop the streak, don’t think when you retired his jersey is any different, enjoy the fact that you finished higher in the polls, is that called a moral victory, the fact remains that you still lost the game 45-42. best of luck next season.

Guys, we need to stop bashing Tech about getting a commemorative ring made for their season. After all, at UGA , we retired Theron Sapp’s just because he ended UGA’s streak against Tech.

And in spite of Aycock’s awards, the real question is can he spoon as good as Matt Stafford?

Why don’t all of you grow up and show and some semblance of class? This is a recruiting blog, not a playground or a kindergarten.

Dontae is a fine young man. He is the epitome of a student athlete and will be successful at the next level, wherever he chooses to play. Selfishly, I hope its GA Tech, but if it’s Auburn, I’ll still wish Dontae well.

The players Dontae “beat out” in the Guy Toph Award this year are also fine young men and should be congratulated for having great seasons and being stellar citizens. Any College program should be equally proud to have them join their program(s).

Dontae didn’t call it a “secret commitment” now did he?

Just because someone doesn’t make a “formal” announcement of a commitment to a College program to the press doesn’t make it any less of a commitment now, does it? Please tell me how that reflects on Dontae’s character?

On the other hand, your comment speaks volumes about your character.

If it’s a secret, why is it being written about?

By GA Tech Insider

February 1, 2009 2:14 PM | Link to this

Big MIKE;

Perhaps that’s a better question to ask Dontae’s High School Coach. If you read the article carefully, neither Dontae, nor anyone from GA Tech has made any comment about the situation whatsoever.

Sometimes a player asks that his decision be kept private, for whatever reason, and if you follow recruiting, you’re aware that the Coaching Staffs aren’t allowed to make any public comments on the kids until they have officially signed their LOI’s.

Some of these kids just don’t like the media circuses that go with recruiting, and some of the kids tell the Coaches that they want to take all of their visits to be 100% sure, just in case, and don’t want a formal announcement so no one will be embarrassed. It doesn’t mean that the kids aren’t committed, it just means that they don’t want to have and regrets.

one great reason why a recruit may keep his committment a secret is to help his teammates out.

if his committment is up in the air than coaches continue to come to his school. this helps his team mates gain futher exposure.

is that too complicated for the dawgs on our blog to understand?

By GA Tech Insider

gt fan;

Thanks for adding that one to the list. I can’t believe I forgot one of the most important reasons for not making a public announcement of a commitment.

In fact, that’s precisely why Jordan Luallen waited as long as he did to formally announce his commitment to GA Tech.

True, I did recruit Mr. Tarrant. But, he is not a “rapist,” as in your own words. If he was, he’d be in jail at this time.

I agree, it does speak volumes about my character - it shows that I have integrity.

It reflects on his character, Insider, because I’m sure that Dontae did not call Auburn and told them that he’s committed to Georgia Tech. If he has in fact made a secret commitment, he will take the free visit and enjoy all that it entails, all the while leading Auburn to believe that he is available.

Being a GT fan, I know you don’t have much experience with women, but I can assure you that if I made a “secret commitment” to a woman and then went on a date with another, that’s darn well reflects poorly on my character.

Still getting their man thongs in a wad because the entire world is laughing almost as hard at their pathetic beatdown in the worst Chick-fil-a bowl in history, as they are the fact a team would actually be lowly enough to engrave the score of a game against a team you face on a yearly basis. You can’t be a team’s rival when they own you by 23 games head to head, douche. Yech isn’t even in our top 3 rivalry games. You can’t even win the pathetic ACC. Worst BCS conference in the nation. Pathetic. Why don’t you go make some rings or something.
