Georgia Tech expected to sign just 12 players in 2010

Collins Hill running back Charles Perkins became the first of next year’s crop of recruits to say yes to Georgia Tech when he pulled the trigger on a commitment to the Jackets during Junior Day on Saturday.

“I’m honored to be the first commitment,” Perkins said. “I know I was the first running back offered, and I know they won’t be offering many scholarships in this class.”

In fact, Perkins said Tech coaches told him they’ll likely sign just 12 players next year.

By contrast, Tech’s 2009 recruiting class, which should be finalized on Wednesday, is expected to feature 22 players.

The 6-foot-1, 205-Perkins, who has offers from Central Florida, Kentucky and Wisconsin, is receiving mail from Auburn, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

He plans to enroll at Tech in January.

“Junior Day was about my fifth time there,” Perkins said. “I went to see everything on campus and learn about the academics. It was a good, overall experience that sold me on the school.

“I’m solid with Tech. I don’t back off my word.”

Will Georgia Tech target Aycock opt for Auburn?

For the past three weeks, it seemed that Dontae Aycock of Chamberlain High in Tampa, Fla. was a lock to commit to Georgia Tech on national signing day.

But the Auburn Tigers may have thrown a wrench into those plans.

Following a weekend visit to the Plains, Auburn has emerged as a serious contender to snag Aycock’s signature on a letter of intent on Wednesday.

“I like the coaches there,” Aycock told AuburnSports.com. “I like the school, the environment around it. I felt like I fit in with the players.

“I got a general idea of what I’d be doing in the offense if I did decide to go there. I just like everything about [Auburn].”

Aycock, who has maintained for weeks that he’ll formally announce his commitment on signing day, is being recruited as a quarterback by the Jackets. He’s projected to play running back if he signs with the Tigers.

“Auburn is up there,” he told AuburnSports.com. “It’s really down to Auburn and Georgia Tech. I just need to decide if I want to play quarterback or if I want to play running back.”

M.L. King’s Kight commits to Ole Miss

Following some weekend drama, M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight committed to Ole Miss around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

“He actually committed to Ole Miss on Friday and then de-committed later in the day,” M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis said Sunday evening. “They told him to think about it over the weekend.

“But he just called them and said he’s coming to Ole Miss.”

Jarvis said the Rebels intend to play the 5-foot-9, 205-pound Kight on defense.

“I think it will be a good fit for him,” Jarvis said. “They’ll use him the way he should be used, which is at outside linebacker or strong safety.

“He’ll have a successful career there. That’s the kind of kid he is.”

Kight chose Ole Miss over Auburn and Oklahoma State.

He was recruited heavily by Georgia Tech in late December and early January.

TE Orson Charles gives high marks to Tennessee

It was the same recruiting story for Orson Charles this weekend.

The tight end from Tampa, Fla., made an official visit to a college campus and loved it as much any recruiting trip, but resisted the temptation to commit.

This time it was Tennessee, and Charles rated the Volunteers “equal” with UGA, Florida, and Florida State - which he all scored a “10.”

“I didn’t commit and I really like Tennessee,” Charles said.

Charles claims no favorites, and confirmed again that he will not be deciding on signing day. He will announce his college decision after visiting Southern Cal on Feb. 13.

Henry County coach quiets UGA speculation on Jamal Patterson

All is quiet with Henry County wide receiver Jamal Patterson. At least through Sunday afternoon.

Henry County coach Mike Rozier said Patterson, who was one of the nation’s most heavily recruited players with nearly 50 scholarships offers, still intends to sign with Stanford on Wednesday.

There is speculation that UGA may make a late run at Patterson. Rozier admits that he is little surprised that Georgia hasn’t expressed more interest in the AJC Super 11 selection, but he confirms that the Bulldogs have not.

“He is going to Stanford,” Rozier told the AJC’s Phil Giltman.

“The rumors with Georgia … I don’t know what they [Georgia] are thinking. They need receivers, but they just never showed any interest in Jamal.”

Patterson agreed to take an official visit to Clemson, and was planning to tour Central Florida. However, he ended up canceling both recruiting trips.

“Down the road. more teams came and offered like Clemson, but he made it clear he is signing with Stanford. He hasn’t received any offers recently.”

Patterson made the surprising decision to pick Stanford in August over Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, among others. One of the few schools never to offer was UGA.

Greg Reid says Knowshon Moreno’s No. 24 jersey reserved for him

Lowndes All-America defensive back Greg Reid said he “loved” his official visit to Georgia, but he wasn’t ready to rank the Bulldogs against his other two finalists, Florida State and Alabama.

“I’m not going to to rate it … The Georgia coaches were great and I had a lot of fun, just like my other visits,” Reid said.

Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, said UGA coach Mark Richt did not pressure him to commit when the two had a closed-door meeting on Sunday.

“[Richt] was just talking about what kind of person he was, and talking about life,” Reid said. “He told me that they would keep a scholarship open for me, and that they would save me Knowshon Moreno’s No. 24, which is also my high school number.”

Reid denied rumors that he had given a “secret commitment” to Georgia. “Yeah, I’ve had a lot of friends ask me about that [on Sunday]. That’s not true. I’m waiting until Tuesday night to pick a school.”

“I’m worn out for all the recruiting right now. I’m going to get some rest, and then talk about recruiting with my family, and go from there.”

Reid said he was treated like a celebrity when he was in Athens over the weekend. “I was surprised. People knew me just about everywhere I went. They all knew I was a Georgia boy, and they want me to be a Georgia Bulldog.”

Reid was joined on his UGA trip by safety Jawanza Starling of Tallahassee, Fla. Both players are considering both Georgia and FSU, along with other schools. “He really didn’t seem to be favoring any one school, but we really didn’t talk that much about recruiting.”

Westlake LB Dearco Nolan reveals his big secret

Outside of telling some family members, Westlake linebacker/defensive end Dearco Nolan kept his college football choice secret from everybody else until this weekend.

He said Sunday that he actually decided to commit to Middle Tennessee State after an official visit there two weeks ago. Lured by its professional pilot program and its football potential, Nolan said Murfreesboro, Tenn., is where he wants to be. He picked Middle Tennessee over Iowa State.

So, why the secret? “Aw, I just wanted to surprise everyone,” he said.

But it really wasn’t a surprise. Nolan, a 6-foot-3, 225-pounder who had 11 sacks last season, talked candidly after the Middle Tennessee trip that he was impressed with the school and football program. At the same time, he hinted he was cooling off on Iowa State, which he called a “question mark” two weeks ago.

“It came down between Middle Tennessee State and Iowa State Those were the two schools that had what I needed,” said Nolan, who wants to become a pilot.

Nolan, who originally committed, then de-committed to North Carolina, said the size and prestige of the college and its conference was not that important to him. It was school first and football second.

But don’t overlook Middle Tennessee State on the gridiron, he said. “They’re about to be a premier program,” he said.

The Blue Raiders went 5-7 in 2008, but beat Maryland and lost by only 6 points to Kentucky.

Perry OL Johnnie Farms considers switching from North Carolina to Auburn

Perry offensive lineman Johnnie Farms, a North Carolina commit, made an official visit to Auburn this weekend.

“I’m keeping my options open,” he said. “I’ll make my decision on Wednesday.”

Could the 6-foot-3, 285-pounder switch commitments? He has done it before. Farms was committed to South Carolina and then committed to North Carolina after an official visit to Chapel Hill, N.C.

Farms said UNC coach Butch Davis knew he was going to Auburn this weekend.

When asked if Davis is worried about losing his commitment, Farms said “No.”

When asked if Davis should be worried, he said “I don’t know.”

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier traveled to Perry, to defend his school’s academics and try to convince Farms to take an official visit. Farms said he would think about it, then later declined. Farms then said he would take an official visit to Central Florida and was thinking about going to Auburn, but then did not visit Central Florida.

College decision by Jarvis Jones could happen “at any time”

There’s no real time frame for the college decision of Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, according to his coach.

“Jarvis is his own person, and he’s going to make his decision whenever he feels like it’s the right time,” Carver coach Dell McGee said.

“It could be after he gets back from LSU on Sunday. He might need another day to think about everything, and then decide on Monday. Or he could wait until signing day [Wednesday] and choose then.”

Jones appears to be favoring Florida, although he claims no favorites. He is considering Florida, Southern Cal, Georgia, Texas and LSU.

Dunwoody DE Malcolm Mitchell switches to Louisville

Dunwoody defensive end Malcolm Mitchell saved his best official for last and it resulted in a commitment to Louisville.

“I just liked the way everything went; the school, coaches, players,” said Mitchell while driving back from an official visit to Louisville Sunday afternoon. “I’m very happy.”

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior also was happy to hear Lousiville’s plan for him: “They’re going to turn me loose on the end,” said Mitchell, who had 10 sacks and 19 tackles for losses in 2008.

Mitchell had committed to Alabama-Birmingham and also took official visits to Eastern Michigan and Western Kentucky. He had planned to visit West Virginia, and was very interested in that program, but it never got scheduled. “They backed off,” Mitchell said of West Virginia.

Mitchell is not sure if he’ll get playing time right away, but he’s also not too concerned.

“They lost a lot of graduating seniors, so they’re bringing in junior college players,” he said. “But I’m fine with red-shirting if I need to.”

Kell WR Marlon Anthony chooses Tennessee school

Kell wide receiver Marlon Anthony is headed to Tennessee-Chattanooga, he said in a text message Sunday afternoon.

Anthony chose Chattanooga over Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Memphis and Connecticut. He said the prospects of playing as a freshman in Chattanooga’s pro style offense made a big difference.

“I’m the go-to guy,” he said. Anthony, a 6-goot-5, 190-pounder, had 778 receiving yards in 2008.

QB Dontae Aycock is “secret” commitment to Georgia Tech, says report

Florida quarterback Dontae Aycock, Georgia Tech’s final target for its 2009 recruiting class, has already committed to the Jackets, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Chamberlain assistant Brian Turner told the Tribune that Aycock gave a “secret” commitment to Georgia Tech three weeks ago. However, he decided to take an official visit to Auburn this weekend after being offered on Thursday, according to the Tribune.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Aycock won the 2008 Guy Toph Award , which is given to Hillsborough County’s best senior football player, beating out other standouts such as Plant High quarterback Aaron Murray (signed with UGA) and tight end Orson Charles (undecided).

Aycock passed for 1,491 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 1,406 yards with 28 touchdowns this past season. The Tribune said Aycock will announce between Tech and Auburn on Wednesday.

Ridgeland WR Michael Bowman says he’s Bama-bound

Ridgeland wide receiver Michael Bowman, a self-described “lifelong Georgia fan” who is committed to Alabama, told the AJC on Saturday that he has not been contacted by UGA in recent weeks.

Georgia was turned down by two wide receivers from the state last week. Georgia has not offered Bowman, but he said if they did before signing day, that he’s sticking with Alabama.

“Georgia had called and wanted film, and we didn’t send it to them,” Bowman said. “I have nothing bad to say about Georgia … I’m just going to Bama.”

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Bowman has maintained a low profile in football recruiting circles since committing to Alabama in early September. He decided on the Crimson Tide over waiting for an offer from UGA, while also considering scholarships from LSU and Oregon.

Last week, Georgia was turned down by Cameron Kenney of Dacula (committed to Oklahoma) and Miller Grove’s Stephen Hill (Georgia Tech).

Stone Mountain LB leaves Tennessee without committing

Stone Mountain linebacker Robert Nelson did not commit to Tennessee during his official visit to Knoxville this weekend.

Does that open the door for Auburn?

“I’m not sure yet,” he said on Sunday. “I’ll know for a fact by [Monday] night.”

The 6-foot, 210-pound senior was a four-year starter. He finished with 383 tackles and 24 sacks. He has a 3.4 grade-point average. Rivals.com ranks him as the 35th best inside linebacker in the country.

Greg Reid takes the blame for Lowndes-Grayson controversy

Greg Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year who is making an official visit to UGA this weekend, was asked if he wanted to say anything about the Lowndes-Grayson controversy earlier this week, and Reid said “Yes, I do.”

Here’s what happened: Lowndes was the defending state champion and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA when it was upset 17-7 by Grayson in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs on Nov. 28. Lowndes was accused of displaying “poor sportsmanship” in the game’s final minutes, and a YouTube video drew public attention to the controversy.

“A lot of people probably misjudged us [Lowdnes] but I can’t change that,” Reid said. “I don’t think we’re the bunch of thugs that YouTube video made us out to be.

“The thing is with our football team at Lowndes, we hate to lose … We didn’t handle that situation very well. We had some crazy penalties and then we lost our composure.”

Reid said he thought his coach, Randy McPherson, got unfairly criticized. “He hates to lose, too, but he doesn’t put up with stuff like that. He’s not going to show up a player on the sidelines but he’ll take care of it behind closed doors. Coach McPherson is a good coach and a very well-respected man.”

Reid said if you want to point fingers at Lowndes, point them at him. “I take the blame for it. I was a senior leader, and I should have had better control of my team … it should’ve never gotten like that. It was my fault.”

Reid said he learned a lot from the experience. “Whatever team I play for in college, I can promise you nothing like that will ever happen again … I’m a Georgia boy and anywhere I go, I’m going to be a role model, and going to represent the state of Georgia well.”
