Henry County coach quiets UGA speculation on Jamal Patterson

All is quiet with Henry County wide receiver Jamal Patterson. At least through Sunday afternoon.

Henry County coach Mike Rozier said Patterson, who was one of the nation’s most heavily recruited players with nearly 50 scholarships offers, still intends to sign with Stanford on Wednesday.

There is speculation that UGA may make a late run at Patterson. Rozier admits that he is little surprised that Georgia hasn’t expressed more interest in the AJC Super 11 selection, but he confirms that the Bulldogs have not.

“He is going to Stanford,” Rozier told the AJC’s Phil Giltman.

“The rumors with Georgia … I don’t know what they [Georgia] are thinking. They need receivers, but they just never showed any interest in Jamal.”

Patterson agreed to take an official visit to Clemson, and was planning to tour Central Florida. However, he ended up canceling both recruiting trips.

“Down the road. more teams came and offered like Clemson, but he made it clear he is signing with Stanford. He hasn’t received any offers recently.”

Patterson made the surprising decision to pick Stanford in August over Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, among others. One of the few schools never to offer was UGA.

I would say the coach is correct. It is confusing UGA did not try harder for one of the top players in the country. It can’t be grades, he’s going to Stanford. They say they need receivers now. Thats where I differ. I think they are ok in that dept. for another year. But Iam sure not a coach @UGA and could be way out of line in my thinking.

Hey kid - Here’s a clue - especially in today’s world.

Stanford Degree >>>>>>> UGA Degree

It ain’t even close.

The fact UGA didn’t go after this kid (or really any other GA WR’s) but went outside of GA is a surprise. I know they have to be real selective early on because they were only expecting to have 14 or 15 scholarships available but I’m sure they regret losing on a talented WR like Patterson (and Stephen Hill) now. He was interested in UGA early on so not sure why they didn’t offer him. If they don’t get Marlon Brown, think they will be second guessing losing on Patterson and/or Hill.

jj (lower case ?) Research shows UGA grads are some of the highest earners in th country.

By jj say what??

February 1, 2009 5:39 PM | Link to this

jj, yeah right, I’m right there with you. A kid from Henry County will have his choice of the following undergraduate degrees from Stanford, as stated on their website:

Each entering student at Stanford has full access to all undergraduate offerings in the Schools of Earth Sciences, Engineering, and Humanities & Sciences.

Sounds kind of limited to me, but I guess you know where his interests lie and have decided this is a great fit for him. LOL.

This was going to be a relatively small class at first and our Coaches concentrated on filling immediate needs and WR was not one of those immediate needs as we got a committment from Wooten. We have a lot of very good WRs in school already, next we were holding a scholarship for Michael Bowman, if he qualified but instead of getting his academics straightened out he committed to Alabama, it then started becoming apparent that we would have more scholarships due to players leaving early i.e. NFL, transferring, getting kicked out of school etc. So we had to play catch up on some of these other guys, i.e. Brown, Kenney and others plus we have been recruiting Orson Charles because he projects as possibly a WR as well and Patterson told our coaches up front that he wasn’t interested in GA.

A-Ville - which I suppose is Adairsville. And yes, two lower case j’s - the two j’s arent a proper name so what does it matter - or is that the best you’ve got?

Show me a link that UGA grads are some of the highest earners. It is a falsehood. It does not exist.

To even THINK that a UGA degree is even comparable to a Stanford degree is just dumb.

Check out US News and World reports on Colleges that are the best value, UGA ranks as one of the best values for the dollar and its says it has found that UGA graduates earnings are higher than graduates from a lot of other schools. Stanford is a very good school but it is also very, very expensive to go there unless you are on scholarship.

Pretty sure he would be on scholarship to Stanford.

jj…yes UGA is listed as best value. But value and post grad earnings are miles apart. Patterson does not have to worry about the cost of Stanford now does he? I am missing your point.

Don’t even think of that bunch of hick rednecks in athens. GO to Stanford where they have a school. You’ll be happy you did.Big dawg you need to take some stupid pills to get over your afliction. You can not be serious to even remotely compare UGA to Stanford. That is like comparing 1st grade to a college degree. You really are stupid.

I have three degrees from UGA. I bleed red and black. UGA is a great school. The honors program kids are academically on par with some of the best schools in the country, including Stanford. That being said… you guys are nuts. Stanford is one of the 5 or 10 best undergraduate schools in the country. And the argument that Stanford has few course offerings is silly. First, unlike many schools, which inefficiently split up the university into many colleges for different subject areas, Stanford combines several dozen departments into the College of Humanities and Sciences. Second, like UGA, the business school classes are often not open to non-majors without permission.

While UGA is a very good public school and a great bang for the buck for in-staters, it is no Standord. And, as noted, Patterson would have a full ride. So, hmmm… full ride at very good school, or full ride at one of the best schools. Sure, if he things football is his ticket, then UGA is the better choice. But a Stanford BA or BS is a helluva backup. Get a life, folks.

Another local kid went to Stanford a few years back and it turned out great for him. JR Lemon from Sandy Creek. Not!!! In my opinion he would have been much better off staying closer to home. There are great educational and better athletic opportunities right here in his own backyard.

We have plenty of receivers. AJ obviously is locked in. Question is will Tony give these kids the tutoring they need to become college level recievers something John Eason consistently failed to do. You think these kids don’t know who puts recievers in the NFL? Of course they do. Until UGA starts to put some recievers in the first round they will continue to go other places. Also in general, the dogs have established a run first mentality. These kids want to catch balls and put up numbers. Richt has always wanted to run more 4 and 5 wides, the reality has been he has not been able to get the reciever talent at UGA to do it. AJ GREEN going high in the first round in a couple years would most likely help solve this problem.

Since it is true that “These kids want to catch balls and put up numbers” how come Stephen Hill chose to go to Ga Tech! I am not saying this is false, just that Hill made a bad decision there, yet I have never been very impressed with the kid so who cares.

God some of you guys are idiots, do you really think that if UGA knew the kid wanted to come there that they wouldn’t have offered him. The kid was probably going to Stanford even if UGA offered him.

The knock on UGA as a lousy school is so old. There are only three or four schools in the USA with at least two Rhodes Scholars and one of em is UGA. UGA is the ONLY PUBLIC college in America with that fine academic distinction. Enough said morons.

is it just me or is something fishy going on? UGA lost out on a couple of recievers but didn’t go hard on bowman or patterson. i’m thinking either UGA just mailed in this season and are waiting on the great crop of recievers next year or they have secret commitments from orson charles and/or marlon brown. am i crazy?

UGA produces doctors, judges(yuk),lawyers(double yuk), politicians(triple yuk), etc. Most of them probably can hold their own with Stanford grads when it come to money.

Uga recruiting reminds me of the Beetle Bailey cartoon script.
