Greg Reid says Knowshon Moreno’s No. 24 jersey reserved for him

Lowndes All-America defensive back Greg Reid said he “loved” his official visit to Georgia, but he wasn’t ready to rank the Bulldogs against his other two finalists, Florida State and Alabama.

“I’m not going to to rate it … The Georgia coaches were great and I had a lot of fun, just like my other visits,” Reid said.

Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, said UGA coach Mark Richt did not pressure him to commit when the two had a closed-door meeting on Sunday.

“[Richt] was just talking about what kind of person he was, and talking about life,” Reid said. “He told me that they would keep a scholarship open for me, and that they would save me Knowshon Moreno’s No. 24, which is also my high school number.”

Reid denied rumors that he had given a “secret commitment” to Georgia. “Yeah, I’ve had a lot of friends ask me about that [on Sunday]. That’s not true. I’m waiting until Tuesday night to pick a school.”

“I’m worn out for all the recruiting right now. I’m going to get some rest, and then talk about recruiting with my family, and go from there.”

Reid said he was treated like a celebrity when he was in Athens over the weekend. “I was surprised. People knew me just about everywhere I went. They all knew I was a Georgia boy, and they want me to be a Georgia Bulldog.”

Reid was joined on his UGA trip by safety Jawanza Starling of Tallahassee, Fla. Both players are considering both Georgia and FSU, along with other schools. “He really didn’t seem to be favoring any one school, but we really didn’t talk that much about recruiting.”

Glad he had a good trip and I hope that Starling felt his trip was good also. Wherever these guys end up, I am sure they will do well and I wish them the best. If not UGA, then anywhere else they feel good about except FSU. At FSU they would end up on a team that will most certainly be on probation for the next 2 or 3 years. That would be a shame as I would like to watch Reid and Starling) on TV and in Bowl games (which probation prohibits). Hope they become Dawgs or at least something other than FSU who is staring at probation and a new headcoach after next year.
P.S. Anyone who thinks the NCAA will do anyting less than proabation after the violations FSU had is totally dreaming. Bowden is good and respected but his reputation can only get the penalty delayed till after signing. Then it is whamo!

Hey Greg you may want to give a little more thought to your decision - In this Superbowl - The ACC and Big Ten lead all conferences with 22 players each on the two Super Bowl teams, followed by the SEC (14), Pac-10 (11) and the Big 12 (10).

Grown men playing professionally pay other grown men thousands of dollars for their numbers. It’s a simple gesture that means a lot to a lot of kids, just one of a number of little things that Mark Richt does that convinces kids to come play for him. Something SportsFan apparently wouldn’t understand.

Dawgcrew34…..I beg to differ. I think UGA will be lucky to win 8 games. UGA beat the “cupcakes” with no problem, struggled with other SEC teams, and then got their a$$ handed to them when they played contenders. Florida will be a loss, OSU will be a loss, GT will be a loss…it can go either way against SC and Kentucky.

That comment about which conferences have more players in the Pros’s is stupid. Bottom line is, if you you are good enough you will make it to the PRO’s. UGA has it share of players in the PRO’s, and should have at least 2 two first found pics this year. If you are good enough, the pros will find you, look at Tony Romo, he was from an Ohio Valley league school. I am not his biggest fan but my point is, he is the starting quarterback for one of the hottest franchise teams in the country, they are the Dallas Cowboys, regardless if you love em or hate em. I just wonder why the guys who are obviously eat up with jealously hand out on these boards. They do not have confidence in their programs or coaches to recruit I guess, so they have to cast FUD.

I am not sure that UGA has more NFL players than any other school, but I am sure that Georgia’s performance on the field has not matched the alleged talent of these superstars. Furthrmore, Georgia has one of the worst graduation rates in the conference. I wonder how Wally Butts would feel about promising a kid, who may not meet minimum admission standards, his own, special number. Georgia does not need more entitled, uncommitted athletes who take themselves out of the game when things aren’t going their way or commit penalties because they have no sense of discipline. Players like these will lead to more 9-3 seasons and worse.

Probation does not prohibit postseason play. Florida State was already on self-imposed probation and played in the postseason this year. The NCAA is likely to impose a few more scholarship reductions and vacate some past wins. It is doubtful that they will ever impose postseason bans again.

FSU is not going to be banned from post-season play. They will lose a few scholarships though. In the end it won’t matter much, because the new staff has improved the talent core…they just need experience.

UGA will not win the NC next year…there will be about 5 teams in the SEC alone that are better than them (LSU, Bama, Ole Miss, UF, and possibly even Arkansas w/Mallett).

GT Grad, both Universities produce fine Grads. Their earning potentials lie totally in their hands. I am a UGA Grad and I have say that I make more money per year at my job than my father a Tech Grad did at his job. If you want to be an engineer go to Tech. Choose the school that is right for you, but stop the crap about we are smarter than you, and we make more money than you. Tech does not have a law school, a med school, etc. Each has their own areas of specialization. I am so over the jealousy Ga Tech.

Chris and W,

Self imposed probation means nothing. NCAA imposed probation means no TV and no Bowl games as long as the probation is in effect. Usually if the NCAA imposes a scholarship reduction, probation goes with it. They haven’t dropped the hammer yet out of respect for Bowden. Any other school in the same situation would be in big trouble. They just don’t want Bowden to go out that way and you can bet he is counting on that. Big gamble for any recruit to go to FSU when there are other schools with no pending NCAA punishments.

By ttown one

February 2, 2009 9:44 AM | Link to this

The UGA fans on here are hilarious. FSU will not get more than 2-3 schols penalty b/c FSU did everything within it’s control to remedy the situation and has resolved the issue. FSU’s new head coach is already known and the recruits coming in know Fisher just as well as Coach Bowden.

You can mark this down: UGA will never win a national title with Mark Richt. Good coach, but he is not aggressive enough to win it all. UGA will always be—at best second fiddle in the SEC EAST, and third in the SEC. Go ahead UGA fans and dispute it, but you know the truth.

FSU had Darnell Dockett, Anquan Boldin, Chris McFadden, Lawrence Timmons and several others in the . UGA had Pope and Hines Ward. FSU puts more players in the NFL than most conferences (check USA Today and NY Times as references). For some of you to talk smack about FSU is laughable. UGA was a pretender before Richt (from FSU) came to town. Dooley was drowning his sorrows at the local Cozy Corner with a bottle of Beam. UGA is the unspoken step-child of FSU football. UGA has even tried to get more FSU coaches (Jody Allen and your current TE coach) because you know a good thing when you experience it.

The young man will make the best decision for himself and FSU wishes him the very best, regardless of where he chooses. Hopefully, his dad will get the opportunity to see him graduate and play his college and NFL career, and his mom can be proud of her talented son for years to come. Greg will make the best decision and hopefully that includes playing for one of college football’s greatest DC’s (Mickey Andrews) and a college football legend (Bobby Bowden).

SEC fan-

Wrong. Probation means just that- probation. There are no additional punitive measures that accompany probation automatically. The NCAA can impose additional punitive actions, but they will rarely, if ever, impose postseason and TV bans again.

FSU and the NCAA are currently negotiating the terms of the penalties now. It appears the sticking point is the possible loss of two NCAA Track and Field championships. The penalties in play are additional scholarship reductions across all sports and vacating wins during the 2007 season.

This has nothing to do with Bobby Bowden. The NCAA simply does not want to go through an appeal process so both parties agree to the penalties ahead of time. The sticking point is the track championships.

W, Correct, nothing comes automatically with probation. However, something does come with it. FSU voluntarily has offered to reduce scholarships so that is public knowledge. You think Fla newspapers are going to speculate on the additional possibilities during recruiting season? As for the eminent pending sanctions/penalties having nothing to do with the winningest coach in NCAA history, you just go on believing that. Unlike you, I don’t profess to know more than the NCAA rules committee about what they will ultimately do. My only point is why should a recruit risk his career on what the NCAA will may decide regarding the cheating scandal at FSU? No problems pending like that at UF or Bama.

I’m confused. You said previously,

“NCAA imposed probation means no TV and no Bowl games as long as the probation is in effect.”

But now agree that nothing comes with probation automatically:

“W, Correct, nothing comes automatically with probation.”

Which is it?

TV and Postseason bans will not happen regardless of the penalties imposed. They will lose scholarships and have wins vacated.

Reid’s main concern is playing early. His best shot at that is FSU, regardless of the pending penalties from the NCAA.

To sit there and talk about his “daddy” being in prison… To talk about the NFL (we are discussing college at the moment) and then MICHAEL PHELPS?

W Good point. The specific punishment that comes with probation is not a automatic However, a punishment does come with it. For whatever reason, you seem to know for certain what the punishment will not be. Good for you. If the FSU staff was as certain as you, it seems they would announce it to the public and the NCAA rules committee. As for whether or not that kid will play early, he may well play early at FSU. Saw where another starter there was arrested again this weekend for DUI. They seem to drop like flies at FSU whether it is cheating, DUI, grades, etc.. Again, the question is why would a kid risk whatever the NCAA penalties will be for FSU? Just a known risk that isn’t necessary. He has good schools to choose from that are not waiting to find out what their penalties from the NCAA will be.

89Viking - Well said. So funny how so many people know so much about this kid and have never met him or had a conversation with him or any of these coaches.

No top coach would “promise” a kid playing time in my opinion. Every player has to compete for his spot. I’m sure that’s what Richt told Reid, just like Saban did. Sure Meyers did too. Simply fact of the matter is he doesn’t want to go to Florida. His cousin is going to FSU and it’s closer to home. UGA is his state school and there is a lot of pressure on him to stay in state just like any top players from their states.

There is so much pressure on these kids. Let’s not forget, they are still just teenagers trying to make the biggest decision of their life. Let them and leave all the nonsense out of it.

TO GENE- the graduation rate numbers were from probably five or more years ago. for whatever reason they take a while to get all the info. they also count guys going pro early. which sort of screws everything up. my understanding is that uga has one of the better grad rates top to bottom in the sec.i think about the numbers your talking about came out a while back were from like 97-2002 or something like that.uga was very low then. they do a multi year span.

Hey SportsFan:

Apparently you have never been a participant in sports(as a player). An athlete’s number is very important to him/her,almost sacred.Unlike you whose number is a negative. I can see you now running onto an unknown field with SportsFan as your name and #-69 on your jersey !!! HA-what a dufus!

Why didn’t Richt promise Reid something meaningful!. Like say, that he won’t be in any championship games in the next four years either if he comes to Georgia. Lord knows he could have done that too!

Greg Reid, by his own admission, does not want to compete. He wants to start now!He is a very good player and we at Florida would love to sign Greg. However, seeing that he does not like to compete, UGAY or the Semenholes would be his best bet. Good luck Greg!

That’s total BS. This kid wouldn’t be in the position he’s in, with the opportunity to play football at some of the top programs in the country, if he “does not want to compete”.

He doesn’t want to go to Florida. Get over it.

hey everybody you will soon be hearing the name craig shively around UGA he is from Louisville, KY and use to go to ballard high school but now oldham county high school. UGA already has shown lots of interest in this kid already and he is only a sophmore he plays linebacker/running back at 6’1 i think. i seen this kid at a football combine in Atlanta.

GO GATORS,

Who says he couldn’t beat out one of those guys? Florida’s got great corners, but this kid’s obviously got some serious potential. And third best team in the east? Who’s shooting that smoke up your a*? Even with how much Georgia “sucked” this year, we still easily got second in the east with a 6-2 mark, with both of the losses being to very good teams. Honestly, who’s going to be better than Georgia in the east next year besides florida? Tennessee??? South Carolina??? Give me a freaking break!! Georgia’s got second easily!

31-0 at the half?!!

If Reid does commit to UGA - probably the best set of corners UGA has recruited in the same class in recent memory.

Caution - you never know who will pan out. I think we all have seen big time recruits in high school playing at their full potential - and not improving to the college level. EARLY BLOOMERS that peak at 18- 19 years old. Kind of like Steve Avery - when he was 19 - he was just incredible - but really did not improve because he reached his potential at an early age. Bloomed early.

While at the same time - we see standouts in college and think, “where did he come from!!!!”

At any rate - besides Reid - who do you think UGA will sign?

O. Charles? - I think UGA has a chance - but his family would like for him to play closer to home. And his USC visit could spell trouble as he might get blinded by the Hollywood lights!! I am think the lure for playing for National Champs GATORS might be hard to overcome - and Tallahassee is a lot closer to Tampa than Athens, GA.

J. JONES - Don’t think he will sign with UGA. Betting Gators on this one.

Marlon Brown - same as Charles - family wants him to stay as close to home as possible. Is Ole Miss in play? Vols really pushing hard. I doubt he signs with UGA. The fact that UGA is making last minute recruiting hits on other WR’s speaks volumes on their confidence of Brown at UGA.

B. Massie - will sign with the TIDE BABY!!!!!

J. Starling - again - think he will sign with FSU - but UGA right in there.

Always fun to watch, fun to predict, and always - there are last minute surprises.

At any rate - on paper, UGA has put together another nice class - need to put together a better staff.

Last thought, you build teams from the inside out -where are the DE’s???????? Bama has 12 recruits (13 if Massie signs) that are OL, Dt and DE

UGA only has 6.

Before you hit the reply button and cry about “needs” and “balanced class” and such - better make sure you have overflowing numbers of trench players. Ask yourself - do you feel great about the UGA OL, DL and DE personel and depth positions over the last three years? Production just has not been that great - not bad mind you - but not great - unless you are playing Hawaii.

Bama does not play UGA for several years - so I will go easy on you guys for the next several seasons.

Florida is the class of the SEC EAST - and have big time separation over Vols, Dogs and Gamecocks. Basically - it”s a three (3) way race for 2nd place and Vols will be improved - next year - they will pass the Dogs for several years to come and the entire staff is all ready better than UGA’s (BOBO?, MARTINEZ?)

Bama and LSU look pretty even as to who will have the honor to play the Gators in ATL. SEC East #2 team = 4th best in SEC - at best.

Good luck tomorrow on signing day. Bama has done excellent and just nailed what we needed AND continue to focus on the trenches!!!

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sure the kid was impressed with Richt saving #24 jersey. Give me a break, all Richt could talk to the kid about was himself and life. Typical Richt recruiting. This is why he can’t close with any big time recruits, and this is why he has no chance against Saban, Meyer, and Bowden and Fisher at FSU. These guys tell kids what they want to hear, playing time, how they fit into the teams defensive scheme, how many kids they put into the NFL, etc. They sure don’t sit there and talk about themselves and what a religious person they are. Kids don’t care about this, and Richt should go into the ministry if all he wants to do is preach and talk about his faith. Richt is done at UGA, and while he is a good person, and he means well, he can’t cut it when he has to make decisions about personnel, and when he has to actually talk about football to young recruits. Please Richt, do all UGA fans a favor, and go into the ministry. If you really care about UGA and it’s fan base, and if you really care about these kids, you will do the right thing and call Billy Graham for a job.

1953 Dawg, you are old and crabby. The bars in front of your eyes are no doubt your ribs. Bet you haven’t seen daylight for a long, long time. Other than being a total idiot, you are probably a decent person. I have never seen a Tech person so bitter. Why don’t you get a life and quit trying to sound like you know anything about football because you obviously don’t. You are also obviously no Dawg fan. I hope whoever you support does well so maybe your lousy attitude will improve (although it is probably beyond hope).

honestly it would tickle me to death if greg picked a school like USF, UCF, and stated the reason “was bc of all the bandwagon fair weather fans that talked bad about him during the season and after”, and i pull for the seminoles. too state that 1 school is any better than another is absurd,,,every school has a drawback no matter the school.
