Greg Reid takes the blame for Lowndes-Grayson controversy

Greg Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year who is making an official visit to UGA this weekend, was asked if he wanted to say anything about the Lowndes-Grayson controversy earlier this week, and Reid said “Yes, I do.”

Here’s what happened: Lowndes was the defending state champion and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA when it was upset 17-7 by Grayson in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs on Nov. 28. Lowndes was accused of displaying “poor sportsmanship” in the game’s final minutes, and a YouTube video drew public attention to the controversy.

“A lot of people probably misjudged us [Lowdnes] but I can’t change that,” Reid said. “I don’t think we’re the bunch of thugs that YouTube video made us out to be.

“The thing is with our football team at Lowndes, we hate to lose … We didn’t handle that situation very well. We had some crazy penalties and then we lost our composure.”

Reid said he thought his coach, Randy McPherson, got unfairly criticized. “He hates to lose, too, but he doesn’t put up with stuff like that. He’s not going to show up a player on the sidelines but he’ll take care of it behind closed doors. Coach McPherson is a good coach and a very well-respected man.”

Reid said if you want to point fingers at Lowndes, point them at him. “I take the blame for it. I was a senior leader, and I should have had better control of my team … it should’ve never gotten like that. It was my fault.”

Reid said he learned a lot from the experience. “Whatever team I play for in college, I can promise you nothing like that will ever happen again … I’m a Georgia boy and anywhere I go, I’m going to be a role model, and going to represent the state of Georgia well.”

You know, TampaGator, Greg is showing a lot more maturity than you are in this article. I wonder who the 18 year old is…

Gator you make it sound like Georgia is the perennial loser huh? I wonder who is winning the series, oh yeah Georgia is.

What Lowndes did was obviously classless but I really admire how Reid is handling the situation now.

That was very impressive for a young teenage kid to accept the responsibility for his actions. Way to go young man. We all make mistakes. What makes one a man is how you react to the mistake. You make the state proud. In terms of talking trash to a teenage kid, that is pathetic. It is easy for some clown to sit behind a computer screen an feel a sense of power. The reality is that people like that are really pathetic in the real world. His mother should have kicked him out of the home before his 40th birthday. Go DAWGS.

Tampa Gator:

You add so much to this blog. I get on the blog to try to find out recruiting information and the only thing that you contribute is the crap you think up while on break at the grocery store.

Why is this happening now, it could have and should have been handled when it happened? Reid and his Lowndes team are thugs. Pic is worth a million words. The coach there is a disgrace, sitting back watching all that and doing NOTHING! Yes Reid will fit in nicely at ugay. He might want to visit the Clarke Co. jail while he is there….just to see what it is like, cause i’m sure he’ll make a visit before his time at ugay is over. That is unless richt can do his usual magic trick w/ the authorities there.

TampaGator;

I don’t disagree that what happened when UGA ran into the end zone when they scored a couple of years ago was uncalled for and a few other “antics” with some other games/teams weren’t representative of good sportsmanship, but Greg Reid is a teenager, not the Head Football Coach of a major football program.

Frankly speaking, I’m sure that if Mark Richt had the chance to do some things differently he would do so as well, but we all make mistakes. How about you? Are you perfect? No regrets in your life?

Get off this kid’s back. The mere fact that he’s trying to take responsibility for something that happened simply because he felt like he should do so as someone who was in a position as a Senior leader speaks of the quality of character of the young man, not that of a “thug,” or someone who is trying to shy away from blame.

Greg isn’t interested in signing with GA Tech but I still respect this young man for what he’s been through and what he’s done with his life in spite of all the odds stacked against him.

If Greg changed his mind about signing with Florida, at the end of the day, he’s still an 18 year old young man who is still in high school and has other things going in his life than playing football that maybe you aren’t aware about. Maybe these things also contributed to the reason for switching allegiances, maybe they didn’t.

The thing is, though, TampaGator, sometimes these kids commit before they go on Campus, and when they arrive, they think it’s too big for them or too far from home and they change their mind and decommit.

Sometimes after these kids commit and then their position Coach leaves and they decide to sign with another team.

Sometimes these kids decide to change their major and another team’s University has a better program that they like better.

These things don’t make them bad kids, and they don’t make them thugs or ingrates.

Bottom line: College football programs aren’t going to get every recruit they go after and recruits change their minds.

Hey Tampa Gator, You should really look into things before running your mouth about academics and arrests. UF has had a lot of players kicked out of school and/or arrested over the past few years. UGA’s “problem guys” have gotten in trouble for underage drinking. DUI, etc. while UF has players who use a dead teammate’s dead girlfriend’s credit card, shoot off guns at parties, and assault women. Which one of those groups sounds like the thugs you are talking about? As far as academics, UGA has more players not qualify than UF because UF grants the most “special” academic waivers in the country. That means kids that don’t qualify at UGA get exempt from the qualifications in the first place and let into UF, ie. Chris Rainey. Meyer puts no emphasis on character, he rides the coattails of Tim Tebow and surrounds him with scumbags that couldn’t even play high school sports their senior year because of multiple fights with opposing players and referees (that’s Percy Harvin in case you were wondering). And finally, the reason Reid isn’t coming to UF has nothing to do with character. It is because your douchebag coach got his feelings hurt and tried to force him into a decision.

TampaGator - Why do you keep ripping this kid? Did he do something to you? Do you even know him? Probably not. Amazing how much information you have about his character, discussion with Urban Meyer, he’s scared to compete, etc., etc. Funny how some other DB’s are rethinking their commitment to Florida but nothing is being said about them. Just keep ripping Greg Reid b/c he doesn’t want to go to Florida.

Did you even see the Grayson game? Greg Reid was not anywhere near any of the nonsense on the field. As for trash talking, when was the last ime you saw a Florida game? Just look at the UGA game last year when Spikes hit Moreno. Doesn’t make Spikes or any of the Gator players bad character guys. It’s just football. Everyone trash talks. It’s no big deal.

Where Reid plays football next year is up to him. He can’t go wrong with FSU, UGA or Alabama (since those seem to be the most talked about). All are great programs, with great coaches. His cousin is going to FSU so there’s a lot of talk that FSU is where he will end up. Why not just support the kid and wish him well for his college career?

Florida has an incredible team. Everyone in the country knows that. They should be ranked #1 next year with all the returning players they have. They may even win another NC next year. But then again, they could end up with 20 or so injuries and see that go away. Florida had a great season this year but what about 2007? It can change very quickly in the SEC.

By the way, since you are not a UGA fan, why do you keep coming to UGA blogs with all your trash talk, nonsense, “first hand” information? Stick to the Florida blog.

To TampaGator, You may be right about the so called “poor sportsmanship” thing that CMR let the players do to ya’ll. But I tell you what! If I were the coach at UGA you winers would still be wining because I would continue to humiliate you guys. I hate the Gators. So you just better be happy that guy socumed to the weak side. Shut up and go back to your glass of cheap wine. One day, we’ll get a guy in here that doesn’t get outcoached and hates ya’ll like I do.

Robert, I have no problem with a player talking trash on the field. I played football (not college) and trash talking is part of the game. Trying to hurt players is not part of the game, however. Florida never does that. Georgia never does that. FSU does that all the time, especially when they play Florida (ask Percy Harvin and Tim Tebow. The Noles players jumped on Tebow’s hurt shoulder when he was on the ground two years ago and last year tried to hurt him again when he was on the ground. They did hurt Harvin on the ground both years…didn’t you see them twisting him backwards this year, hurting his ankle?). My “first hand” information came from an article on the St. Pete paper website that quotes Reid several times. So that actually makes my information second hand. SRQ, you should practice what you preach. Florida NEVER grants waivers for entrance to any athlete (they go by set school standards and NCAA guidlines). Some students grades are submitted for review to verify that they do meet requirements…including John Brown and Torrey Davis last year. Rainey did well at Lakeland HS and met all entrance requirements. Dee Finley, from Bama, did not (barely missed) and went to prep school for one year. He was very successful and is now enrolled at Florida. Georgia’s DE recruit last year did not met requirements, went to prep school, and still did not meet requirements, and is still headed to JC. Meyer does put a lot of emphasis on character, and he puts more interest on academics (John Brown has never seen the field because of his academics and Torrey Davis…perhaps one of the best DL on the team…hardly plays because his grades are not high enough and he misses too many classes…if you don’t believe me about Meyer, then you might believe a Jr. Day 2010 recruit that was on the Gainesville campus this weekend(taken directly from one of the recruiting websites):…“The coaches are the biggest thing I’m looking at,” Nix said. “I want to play for good people who treat me like I’m at home. I want coaches to treat me like family. They have to want me to get an education, not just to play football. That is coach Meyer’s biggest thing.” END OF STORY. Finally, concerning being on a “DAWG blog” as a Gator fan. Why do you DAWG fans rip me for being on an AJC blog (not a DAWG newspaper by the way) and then I read the Ga. Tech recruit stories and you are all on those sites ripping and insulting all the Ga. Tech fans and coaches (just like you do to FLorida fans and coaches) and their recruits. You guys are such “hippos.” Like Reid on his relationship with Meyer…tells one reporter that he was treated badly by Meyer in his office, and then tells another reporter how much he liked the Florida coaches. That kind of character issue (problems with telling the truth) does not go away, usually. Sorry this got so long.

TampaGator;

It’s like I said, above, sometimes kids change their minds for a number of reasons, and initially, it may have nothing to do with the Coaches but for other reasons.

How the Coaches choose to react after the player decides to de-commit may change the player’s perception of their program, however. Therefore, Greg may not be giving conflicting interviews.

Just from your reaction to some of the responses on these blogs, I can see how some of your comments may have been misinterpreted, so perhaps, you can understand how an 18-year-old High School student’s can as well. Cut the kid some slack.

TampaGator - Just because Reid felt he was “treated badly” by Meyer doesn’t mean he doesn’t like Meyer or any of the other Florida coaches. Has nothing to do with his character. He simply changed his mind about Florida.

I think Reid would be crazy to go to FSU right when the NCAA is about to hammer them. I say he is Uga bound.

Why don’t we see which school this guy commits to before we get too excited. He seems rather small for an SEC corner, but he is reputed to be super fast and a good punt returner He may possibly be better on offense and special teams than a CB. I have seen him listed at 5’8” and 5’6” and around 168lbs. Seems to me that he would have his hands full tryting to cover Jones or Green or Harvin. Then again, most college CBs have their hands full covering those guys. Let’s chill untill we see where he is going and if he ever starts at CB when he gets there.

Shane, this kid Reid is bigger than 5’6”. He may indeed be 5’8”, but he plays even bigger than that. I was on the sidelines of the Grayson game. Greg Reid was simply the best athlete on the field. I have never seen a human being run that fast, or be such a dominant force, up close.

The reason Lowndes got beat that night is because they only have about 4 above average athletes, who play both ways, surrounded by well coached, but mediocre talent, who got to that point of the season through reputation, intimidation and dirty play.

Reid is a hot dog with his T.O. antics, but the boy can play.

On another note, I see that his teammate, Marcus Soloman is signing with GA State. Soloman is the team thug from Lowndes. God bless and good luck to Coach Curry. I don’t think another DI program would have taken a problem like that kid.
