Georgia Tech expected to sign just 12 players in 2010

Collins Hill running back Charles Perkins became the first of next year’s crop of recruits to say yes to Georgia Tech when he pulled the trigger on a commitment to the Jackets during Junior Day on Saturday.

“I’m honored to be the first commitment,” Perkins said. “I know I was the first running back offered, and I know they won’t be offering many scholarships in this class.”

In fact, Perkins said Tech coaches told him they’ll likely sign just 12 players next year.

By contrast, Tech’s 2009 recruiting class, which should be finalized on Wednesday, is expected to feature 22 players.

The 6-foot-1, 205-Perkins, who has offers from Central Florida, Kentucky and Wisconsin, is receiving mail from Auburn, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

He plans to enroll at Tech in January.

“Junior Day was about my fifth time there,” Perkins said. “I went to see everything on campus and learn about the academics. It was a good, overall experience that sold me on the school.

“I’m solid with Tech. I don’t back off my word.”

Welcome Charles! We should have a pretty solid class, even though there’s only 12 potential signees.

Sorry HilltopGT,

RealityYech, i bet you get a reality check when preseason #7 ok state, puts your #18 fleabags to rest out in the midwest to start of the 09 season. you guys with 12 startes and a qb with more splinters in his a** than minutes on the field, will suck next year. 5 LOSSES FOR SURE! Those guys will hang at least 40 on your pathetic defense. who are you gonna turn to? the benchwarmer joe cox?? you will be out of the top 25 next season for sure, and chasing tech in the polls! man, i can’t wait to play you guys in atlanta next year with 19 starters back! You will be introduced to another stud running back, anthony allen, along with jones, dwyer, bebe, and the run and shoot to add another wrinkle to our offense. you can’t even stop a pitch to the left or the right! How about your pathetic pass defense, i’m sure the results will be the same in the air. ugay will blow in 09 and you j******* will be crying all season. keep dreaming big, loser! I love it when you guys build yourselves up with expectations and then burst like a bubble when you actually play someone worth a sh! only team you beat that finished in the top 25 at the end of the season, was a pathetic spartan team that lost to penn st and ohio state by a combined 76-22. The big ten is the biggest joke of a conference i have ever seen! You were #1 dude and could not compete with saban or meyer. I recall tech being picked to win 4 games and ranked 39th to start the season!GT being state champs just drives you rednecks bonkers! Just look up ugay football and out next to it, you will see one word…….OVERRATED..OVERRATED..OVERRATED! We spanked you 33-14 right of the field in the second half, so your bragging rights are gone redneck. suck on it till next thanksgiving!! If you want to reflect on past games or history, just remember that you own the 8 game waxing award in the series, and we have the 4 national titles to your awesome 1. present day, 45-42! The funny thing is that Tech fans think they’re smart enough to pull off using fake handles on this blog.

No loser, UGA is simply doing what Tech fans have been doing ever since Spurrier arrived in Gainesville, and making fun of you for getting thumped. But unlike Tech who never plays UF, UGA actually played and beat LSU in their own stadium, who went on to destroy Tech in the worst Chick-fil-a Bowl ever.

Try to chase some puss around (or c0ck, whichever floats your boat you phaggot) and atleast try not to write on a blog during these hours and completely PROVE what a freaking loser you are.

Anyone that is blogging on a friday/saturday night at those hours is a complete toolbag loser. What makes it worse is that its on the AJC recruiting blog, on a team that you hate. And its not like you wrote 1 or 2 things, then went to bed. You sat there, and kept waiting for something else to pop up, or for someone to respond, just so you could write more. You are pathetic. You know what, just go kill yourself. Thats really your only solution at this point. Im embarassed for you kid.

I have to hold degrees from both institutions. Architect and horticulture. Own a landscape design firm. Neither institution or coaches holds these opinions. I played 4 years d 1-AA football and against coach Johnson, great man as is coach Richt. Each coach would be successful at either school. Coach Johnson was brought in to take Tech to the next level, which he has done with every institution he has coached at. Coach Johnson at UGA this year, would not have done any better. I believe coach Richt at Tech would have won 8 to 9 games. As a tech and uga graduate, I hope Richt keeps winning 9 to 10 games, if not then UGA will get a better coach than Richt. Either way each school will have their runs at success. It is good for the schools and the state to keep in state talent at home. Both institutions and coaches hold each other in high regard. It is the fans and students that have these twisted views. 99% of them never played sports beyond high school.

By Zach

February 2, 2009 2:51 PM | Link to this

The 12 is clearly a preliminary number, but it’s due to the fact that our sophomore class is huge, but our junior class is very small. Any current sophomores who leave early for the NFL will add a player to the number who can get scholarships in 2010. I am a touch surprised that Johnson isn’t intentionally limiting this class to be able to get a few more players in 2010 for program continuity, but in the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world of college football I can’t blame him for trying to shoot for success sooner rather than later.

This 2009 class is already larger than it would have been due to the END of the probation doled out so heavy-handedly by the NCAA, so this year we are allowed to have a full complement of scholarships. We have so many freshmen and sophomores on scholarship that the 2009 and 2010 classes can only be so big.

By Zach

February 2, 2009 3:10 PM | Link to this

I looked it up. The roster has 20 seniors (true and red shirt) and 18 Juniors (true and redshirt). This year we’re eligible for 26 scholarships due to 20 plus the 6 that we’re getting back as the probation ends. As far as only have 12 spots available in spite of 18 departing juniors, I suppose not all 18 are on scholarship. By comparison we have 31 sophomores and red shirt sophomores and 52 freshmen and red shirt freshmen.

By mts315

February 2, 2009 3:24 PM | Link to this

We will have 81 total on scholarship if we sign 21 this year. There are only 7 scholarship seniors going into next year. So, 7 graduate plus the 4 short of the 85 max leaves us with 11 scholarships to give for 2010. The coaching staff obviously feels we will lose at least one more player due to transfer, NFL, or injury, that is the reason we have a stated goal of 12 at this point. In my opinion we will probably sing a class of 15 to 17 next year.

Jaded jacket…think you are reading too much into this. CPJ wants his style of players that does not fit the mold of everyone else. Give the guy a chance and let him recruit the way he has been successful in the past. We as observers are on the outside looking in. If you like the way he coaches, you should like the way he recruits. You are either a fan of his style or you are not a GT fan. I understand your concern. But he does not recruit or coach like we are used to in the normal sense. It is difficult to get your arms around something that is this dramatic of of shift. from what we are used to. He does have one of the highest winning % in all of active coaches. I for one, trust what he is trying to do and I am a dog fan. Let it play out. We don’t need to have instant gratification only patience. And that my friend is even tougher of a concept to become comfortable with. The evolution of this program is really interesting to me as a fan. Though I hate to admit it, I am fasinated by what he is doing. It smacks of people not trying to make their mark but of a coach that has the conviction of his confidence. College football would be alot more interesting if more coaches were not so pedistrian in their thinking.

February 2, 2009 3:32 PM | Link to this

JadedJacket,

You need a reality check. GaTech will never have a TOP 10 recruiting class because it does not have a high enough national profile. It does have a very good coach in CPJ. That plus the uniqueness of his offense will get him enough players to consistently stay in the top 25.

Look at the coaches and or programs Tech is going against. in the ACC. Miami, FSU/Bowden, UNC/Butch Davis, VA Tech/Beamer. All of those schools have been in the National title chase and or the Top 10 consistently over the past 10 years and or have a HC with a national profile. Butch Davis rebuilt Miami and has NFL experience.

VA Tech has been a top 15 program since the Vick years. FSU was in the TOP 5 every year from 1987-2000. Miami has 5 National Titles since 1983 and the most 1st round NFL picks since 2000.

Miami and FSU also happen to be in the state with the most talent in the country. GA has lots of top talent. The problem is that Tech is not #1 on their list most of the time. After UGA, you have all of the SEC schools like UF, UT, Bama, Auburn.

Why you think Tech is supposed to have top 10 recruits is a mystery. The real key is what you do with the players once they arrive. You have a good coach. Give him time to establish himself. Even then you need to realize that 9-3 is a good year for GT with an occasional trip to the ACC title game.

Paddy,

First off, I’m a bit confused. Did you forget which handle you were on for a minute when you said “and I am a dog fan?” How can you make a statement like that and then use the word “we” while discussing Tech football?

And how can you say you either like his style or you’re no Tech fan? I for one don’t like it. The fact he refused to play loyal seniors in the Chick-fil-a masacre after it was obvious the game was over shows he has no character at all.

By Big BCH 99

February 2, 2009 4:21 PM | Link to this

Patty & Hurricane in GA are absolutely right, Tech isn’t going to have top 10 recruiting classes b/c of the schools we’re competing against, our high academic standards, & CPJ’s style. Yes, all schools let in athletes that wouldn’t get in otherwhise, but they still have to be able to do the work to stay eligible (1000 SAT vs. 600 (out of 1600)).

As others have pointed out the top 10 guys go SEC b/c they’re not student-athletes & don’t have the capability, or don’t want to do the school work that goes w/ the ACC’s academic schools. Those kids will go to the SEC which has much lower academic standards (except for Vandy (maybe the reason they aren’t normally that good)). At some SEC school they don’t have to do any work, the coaches will make sure that their Profs give them high enough grades to be eligible.

Another thing is that CPJ is not going to go after the top notch guys, he’s gonna go after the right guys to fit his system. He’s gonna want team-first players that are willing to do what he says and work hard.

But using Tech logic that doesn’t add up. Tech fans are famous for using the “well we beat so-and-so, who beat so-and-so who lost to so-and-so, so that means we’re the best in the world” argument.

UGA is 11 points better than LSU, who was a laughable 35 points better than Tech, who inked out 3 point win. So using Tech logic, UGA is 7 points better :)

Jaded jacket… Iam a dog fan since 1971. I am also a college football fan. If I used “we” in my post it was only writers privledge, not a statement of fact. The coach plays whom he wants when he wants. Just like CMR, no difference. I post only under my own handle and enjoy the give and take with other fans. To call out CPJ for lack of character is over the top. If you don’t like the man, you don’t like the man. I don’t have a problem with that. My original point was to let him do his thing and try and duplicate the successes of the past. I think it is good for college football. Nothing more nothing less. He just appears to be a man not trying to make his mark.Only doing his job the way he knows how. That seems honest to me. I believe he is a stand up gentleman. That does not make me a Tech fan, far from it.
